Old CRT monitors have this tendency to produce a shrill high pitched sound as then age. Try this tip and save yourself from the noise.

The problem is mostly caused by a vibrating flyback transformer. In this case, you just need to set up your display settings again. The easy fix is to increase the refresh rate at which the monitor is operating. This might require you to lower the resolution.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Display Settings and click the settings tab.

Then click on the "Advanced" button. Under the 'Monitor' tab, select a refresh rate higher than 72 hz.

Typically, refresh rates that are higher than 72 Hz give a better display experience and may reduce eye strain.

An alternate fix is to perform "percussive maintenece". give the monitor a good, solid whack on ths side. This will stop the vibration, albert temporarily.

Intel's offer to lower operational costs

Intel Corp has launched a new processor technology to help small and medium businesses to reduce their operational costs.

The company's Indian subsidiary has developed a new processor - vPRO - and an upgraded version of Centrino pro-processor for managing the services of small and mid-size businesses.

'Infotech firms such as Wipro, 3i and Zenith are building application and services on the vPRO platform to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) reduce operational costs and consume less power,' Intel South Asia director Narendra Bhandari said at an industry-media conclave here over the weekend.

'The new processors will transform the business client platform and manage the IT infrastructure remotely.'

Locking File Associations

If you have your file associations the way you want for a particular file type, you can remove it from the list that gets displayed in the Folder Options / File Types screen

1. Start Regedit

2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

3. Scroll to the file association you want to lock.

4. In the right panel, create a new Binary value

5. Call it EditFlags

6. Give it a value of 01 00 00 00

7. Now when you go to the Folder Options / File Types screen, you won't see that file type listed.

Disabling The Annoying Online Search To Find Device Drivers

The required driver is missing when you are installing a device. Windows XP Prompts you to go online and search for the driver using Windows Updates. However, experience tell you that is absolutely useless and will only be adding to your hassle.

Usually a driver is included on a CD provided with the device you have purchased. If this is not the case for some reason, you can always download the software from the device manufacturer's website. Why not disable the unnecessary request to search for drivers when you can install them much faster yourself.

The Go to : "Start > Run" and type "gpedit.msc"(without quotes) and navigate to:

Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System

Section on the left pane of the window. Now choose and double click on "Turn off Windows Update device driver search prompt". In the window that appears, chosse "Disable" and apply the settings.

Google offers to remove content from Orkut

Google Inc. and the Federal Prosecution Office of Brazil's northeast Ceara state have signed an agreement to remove offensive and illegal contents from the social network website Orkut.

According to the agreement, signed Tuesday, the prosecution office will be able to access an exclusive web page that will help it request the removal of contents regarded as offensive or illegal.

The service will also allow the entity to preserve any kind of information that can be useful to investigation of illegal activities.

Google, which runs Orkut, is committed to drafting a team of employees specialised in fulfilling the office's demands within a day.

In 2006, the Federal Prosecution Office charged Google with not cooperating with police investigations and refusing to provide information on users' profiles and communities hosted by Orkut, almost forcing the US group to close down its office in Brazil.

Google argued that all the data displayed on the website were stored in the company's servers in the US, and was not available to its branch in the country.

Google has signed agreements with prosecution offices in several Brazilian states to facilitate the settlement of problems with the judicial system.

The settlement originally depended on a series of court decisions.

Restoring the usual position of the Address bar in IE7

In Internet Explorer 7 by default, the Address bar above the menu bar. You want to go back to the usual arrangement of the address bar being below the menu bar can be done by Registry :

Click on "Start > Run" and type "regedit"(without quotes).

After Registry Editor opens, navigate to the

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\Webbrowser

Now, click on the right pane of the window and create a new entry calle "ITBar7Position" by selecting "Edit > New > DWORD-Value

Double click on the value to open it and give the "Value" to '1' and the confirm the changes by clicking on "OK".

Close the Registry and Restart or Logoff your computer to make the changes effect.

If you want undo the position of Address bar simply give the value as "0" or delete it.

If you need to print images that are as large as your wall, you will obviously not be able to do so your printer can only handled A4 size pages. However, if you can "Tile" sections of your image across several A4 pages, you can place them together and stack them across as large a wall as you need. Check out the website Blockposters.

This website lets you upload an image and select how many pages wide you want your image to be. It then slices the image and creates a series of PDF files that you can print out to generate the various sections of your image. Finally, all you need to do is paste them in the correct order on your wall and there you have a massive poster.

In Blockposters the maximum file size is 1 megabyte, so you might want to split a large photo in parts while create the final large poster.

Cleaning the Fan

If your CPU or Chassis fan is not spinning at the correct RPM (this mostly happens with cheaper quality fans), remove the sticker which is on the fan and you will see the "Bush" beneath. Clean out this area with a small brush and makes sure that you put one drop of sewing machine oil in it. Do not put more that a drop at this assembly is very small and larger quantity would flood this area causing a mess when the fan starts. Don't forget to place the sticker back in its place.

Vista Tip : Disabling Thumbnail Preview In The Taskbar

Vista has the new feature shows thumbnail that appears on your screen when you move the mouse over a button on the Taskbar. The thumbnails will not moved until the mouse pointer is moved away from it, if you don't want this feature you can disable it.

Right click on the Taskbar and select the "Properties" context command. Once the "Taskbar" and "Start Menu Properties" dialog box appears, go to the "Taskbar" tab and disable the "Display Thumbnail Previews" option. Confirm by "OK", the change will effective immediately. If you want to activate it later, simply activate the option again.

Desktop Shortcut to Hibernation

The Shutdown.exe command can shutdown or restart your computer, optionally forcing it to shutdown even if some programs attempt to prevent it. But it does not include an option to Hibernate.

To create a shortcut, right click on an empty space on the Desktop and select "New > Shortcut". In that 'Type the location of the item' box copy this text :

"rund1132.exe PowrProf.dll SetSuspendState"(without quotes).

Click on the "Next" button.

In that type a name for this shortcut box, type "Hibernate" and then click on "Finish".

If the shortcut does not work, then you will probably need to configure your computer to enable hibernation.

Click on the "Start > Control Panel" then click on the "Power Options" icon.

Click on the "Hibernate" tab and make sure the "Enable Hibernate" option is checked. You do not need to restart the computer in this procedure. You can change the icon of the shortcut you create.

Improving Speed of Slow Hard Disks

The fragmentation of saved files by Windows XP throughout the complete disk memory is directly proportional to the space occupied in the hard disk, this also slows down the PC. You can easily optimize almost all the files for quick access using XP’s defrag tool, but not the Pagefile and the Registry. The reason is Windows XP does not provide access to these files while operating.

Yet, the Pagefile and the Registry files can easily be optimized for quick access using the ‘PageDefrag’ tool.

Unzip the archive into any directory you want. Start the file “pagedfrg.exe” after unzipping and activate “Defragment at next boot”. The tool latches itself at the next boot before the operating system starts and defrags the system files. Windows then boots and the hard disk then starts functioning with its usual speed again.

Removing Unwanted Programs from System Try

Services are programs that start up when you computer boots. They continue to run in the background while your PC is on. Some services load automatically while some load when a program is used. Some of these services are not needed by various users and can be safely disabled. But remember, there are some services that must not be disabled.

To disable any services, click on the “Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative tools”. Then double click on the “Services” icon. You can click on any service to see a description of what that service does. If you do not need the service, double click on it. In the “Startup Type” dropdown box, you can choose “Automatic” (automatically starts up when you boot your system), “Manual”(lets Windows decide when and if to start the service), or “Disabled” (will not load the service at all). After making your selections, close the window and reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

A Web Page As Your Desktop

If you're looking to add some variety and fun to your desktop. Try this :

Right click on the Desktop and select "Properties".

Select the "Desktop" tab click on the "Customize desktop" option at the bottom.

Click on the "Web" tab, this tab lists the available web pages that cand be viewed as the Desktop background. To add your choice of web page. Click on "New" and then select the web page that you would like to add to the list of web pages that are available for Desktop background.

Out of the list, select the web page that you would like to view as a desktop and then confirm by clicking on "OK".

The "Browse" option let you select the web page of your choice.

Google : Use Safe Search

While Google by default keeps the explicit images out, the language is not filtered by default. You can set Google to filter the text for explicit language and ensure that your kids do not end up with explicit search results.

Open the Google search homepage and click on the option "Preference".

Go to the "SafeSearch Filtering" option.

Change the filtering from "Moderate" to "Strict filtering" to block explicit language.

In case you are looking to unlock all the filtering select the last option "Do not filter my search results"

Click on the option "Save Preferences" at the bottom right corner and your new preferences are applied.

Configuring The Power Button

Windows XP has a very smart and efficient power management system, which lets you configure the system "Power ON/OFF" button. By default when the Power On/Off button is pressed the system automatically performs the "Turn off Computer" action which is otherwise done by going to "Start > Turn off Computer > Turn off". Here's a tip to change the settings and stop Windows from automatically Shutting down when the power button is pressed.

Right click on the desktop and select "Properties"

Click on "Scree saver" tab and then go to the option "Power" at the bottom of the window.

Under the "Power" settings click on "Advanced".

Go to "Power buttons" and select the first option "When I press the power button on my Computer".

The default action is set to "Shutdown", you can change it to other options like "Stand by" or "ask me what to do" and click on apply.

Protection Against Power Surges

A power surge is a sudden brief increase in the line voltage, usually caused by lightning or power outages, short circuits, tripped circuit breakers, etc. It can damage you electrical equipment or at least reduce its life span. When lightning strikes a power line, it creates an extremely large power surge that overpowers almost any surge protector, so don't rely only on a surge protector. The best way to protect your computer is to unplug it. Also unplug any phone or coaxial cables.

To tackle voltage fluctuations, it's advisable to use a good quality surge protector. The quality is generally proportional to the price, a cheap spike guard would do little more than just providing power outlets. It should also have an indicator light indicating whether it's functioning properly or not. It should have a fuse that burns out if more than a particular amount of voltage passes through it. Power surges can also travel through your phone lines and coaxial cables-the phone lines connects to the modem and the coaxial cable is used to provide broadband Internet. Look for a surge protector with a telephone and coaxial cable line-in-jack. Some UPS units also provide surge protection.
