The moment the iPhone first saw the light of day, observers wondered how long it would take before a redesigned iPod based on the iPhone form factor followed. The answer, as it turned out, was about two-and-a-half months. The iPod touch, along with a redesigned iPod nano and the iPod classic, was unveiled at a special event on September 5. Apple said that its latest digital audio player would become available towards the end of September, but eight days later reports began trickling in that the 16GB iPod touch was available in limited quantities at Apple Stores.

Five minutes after the local Apple Store opened the next day, I found myself waiting with a woman who wanted to exchange the iPod classic she had received as a gift for an iPod touch. After tracking down a green-shirted Apple Store employee, I handed over my American Express card and walked out the door with a shiny new iPod touch.

Chances are, most of you reading this have at least a passing familiarity with both the "classic" iPods and the iPhone. If you know the difference, feel free to skip ahead a couple of paragraphs, because I'm going to cover the basics of the iPod touch for the uninitiated.

Minimalism, Apple style

The iPod touch takes a minimalist approach to hardware design. There are exactly two buttons on it: a power button at top left that also handles sleep/wake, and a home button on the bottom underneath the screen. There are two ports, both on the bottom. One is for the headphone and the other is for docking the device with your Mac or PC. That's it.

Aside from the power switch and home button, every aspect of the iPod is controlled via the touch-screen display. Tasks such as listening your music, watching your videos, looking through your photos, and browsing the iTunes Store are all accomplished via the touch screen. The same goes for surfing the Internet, watching YouTube, or using the calculator.

Wait... surfing the Internet? Watching YouTube? That's right. The iPod touch is the first digital audio player to ship with a full-featured web browser and support for watching YouTube. You enter URLs (and all other data) via an onscreen keyboard.

The device itself is small. It measures 4.3" x 2.4" x 0.31" and weighs in at a minute 4.2 ounces. In comparison, the 160GB iPod classic is 4.1" x 2.4" x 0.53" and is 1.5 ounces heavier. You can get a sense of the difference between the iPod touch and a 5.5g iPod from the photos below.

The new UI isn't the only difference between the two iPods

In terms of other things the geekily-minded will care about, the iPod touch supports H.264 and MPEG-4 video, with a maximum resolution of 640x480. On the audio side, the touch supports AAC and Protected AAC (natch), MP3 (including variable bitrate), AIFF, WAV, Apple Lossless codec, and Audible books. There's also the aforementioned 802.11b/g support, which is able to handle WEP, WPA and WPA2, but not WPA Enterprise and WPA2 Enterprise.

Apple claims that you'll be able to get 22 hours of audio playback from the iPod touch and five hours of video playback. A full charge takes about 3 hours, but you can charge the battery to 80 percent in half that time.

The specs for the iPod touch display match that of the iPhone. Both devices have a 3.5" multi-touch display with a resolution of 480x320. That works out to 163 pixels per inch. Do they look the same? You'll have to keep reading to find out.

Design
For better or worse, the iPod Touch is clearly the iPhone's baby brother. Like most products that roll out of Apple, the Touch shows the love of committed designers, hardware engineers, and usability experts. The iPod Touch measures a slim and pocketable 4.3 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.31 inch, with an all-metal-and-glass design that feels as expensive as it looks. Because nothing will ruin a portable video player faster than a gouge across its screen, we're happy to see that the face of the Touch uses the same scratch-resistant glass found on the iPhone. Most users will still want to buy a protective case, however, since the iPod Touch feels a little fragile and the back is covered with the glossy, scratch-prone, smudge-loving chrome exterior common to most iPods.

There are only two physical buttons on the iPod Touch: a button on the face of the player used for calling up the main menu; and a screen deactivation button found on the top-left edge of the case. The iPod Touch is controlled largely using an icon-based touch-screen navigation menu nearly identical to the iPhone's, but with greater emphasis placed on music, photo, and video playback.

The two design details that distinguish the iPod Touch from the iPhone are the downward-facing headphone jack and volume controls. In the absence of dedicated volume control buttons, the Touch gives users the ability to bring up an onscreen volume slider by double-clicking the main menu button. The same volume screen offers controls for playing, pausing, and skipping through tracks.

When it comes down to it, the iPod Touch's most unique selling point is not its feature set, but its interface. You can find products that offer more features, as well as higher quality audio and video performance, but you won't find any other product that can match the feeling you get using the iPod Touch interface. In the absence of jetpacks or flying cars, the futuristic novelty of zooming photos with a pinch of the finger or flying through your music collection in Cover Flow is difficult to quantify into a bullet point, but it is probably the most justifiable reason to invest in the Touch.

Features
The iPod Touch draws 99 percent of its features from the iPhone. While iPhone owners have zero incentive for buying the Touch, the rest of us now have a way to get our hands on many of the iPhone's features without costly and contractual AT&T service plans. The bad news is that the iPod Touch does away with more than just the iPhone's phone capabilities--it also gives up built-in speakers, microphone, camera, and Bluetooth. Remaining features such as a Safari Web browser, POP/IMAP e-mail, YouTube video portal, photo viewer, music player, video player, stock tracker, weather forecaster, notepad, and iTunes Wi-Fi music store still place the iPod Touch on the cutting edge for portable video players, however. In fact, at the time of this writing, the only product that can even compete with the iPod Touch's combination of a Wi-Fi-enabled Web browser, wireless music store, wide-screen video playback, photo viewer, and audio player, is the Archos 605 WiFi.

One of the few notable features that put the iPod Touch ahead of the iPhone is the ability to output video and photos to a television using an optional Apple AV cable, Universal Dock, or qualifying third-party video accessory. We are a little disappointed that the iPod Touch is the only iPod that does not support a generic USB storage mode, but we doubt many users will be upset by this.

Audio format support is unchanged from previous iPods. The Touch supports standard and purchased AAC, as well as MP3, Audible, WAV, AIFF, and Apple Lossless. Video format support is likewise unaltered from the H.264/MP4 files playable on 5G iPods, as well as the third-generation iPod Nano and the iPod Classic. The Touch supports video resolutions up to 640 by 480 at 30 frames per second.

The iTunes Wi-Fi music store lets you browse, preview, and download music over a Wi-Fi Internet connection.

Safari
The Safari Web browser found on the iPod Touch is more or less the same great browser found on the iPhone, minus a few features. For instance, when using Safari on an iPhone, street addresses, e-mail addresses, or phone numbers displayed on Web pages can instantly launch a location map, phone call, or impromptu e-mail anywhere with mobile phone reception. On the iPod Touch, however, maps and e-mail functions require Wi-Fi reception, and phone calls are obviously out of the question. Our major complaint using Safari on both the iPod Touch and iPhone is its incompatibility with Flash-based Web objects, such as embedded video players and music players.

Despite these few limitations, using Safari on a small mobile device like the iPod Touch is still fun and useful. The intelligent touch-screen keyboard and multiple browser window management are a big plus. Beginning with firmware Version 1.1.3, iPhone and iPod Touch users can now use Safari to save bookmarked Web pages as menu screen icons, providing quick access to commonly-used sites.

iTunes Wi-Fi
Both the iPod Touch and iPhone allow users to browse, preview, purchase, and download music from the new iTunes Wi-Fi music store. The store is limited strictly to music downloads--no movies, TV shows, podcasts, or games--at least, not yet. You'll have to hop onto an available Wi-Fi Internet connection to take advantage of the wireless music store, but once connected, you can search for any artist, album, or song in the iTunes catalog, as well as browse by genre, top sellers, featured artists, and new releases. Store purchases require you to enter your iTunes password as a security measure. Once the download is complete, the song is immediately available to listen to and will transfer to your computer's iTunes music library the next time you sync the device. The feature seems to work without any kinks. Even interrupted downloads pick up once a Wi-Fi connection is re-established.

Apple has also announced a partnership with the Starbucks coffee chain that will allow iPhone and Touch users the ability to access a Starbucks-branded version of the iTunes Wi-Fi music store when the device is used at participating cafes--without paying to use the hot spot. We doubt that anyone will purchase the Touch based on this added functionality, but it bears mentioning.

Design Workshop Classic is a program that's more for CAD professionals than home users. The interface is not as user-friendly as the other products, but if you have experience in Computer Aided Drafting, then this product might be your solution.

Features & Tools:

Design Workshop Classic is a powerful tool that can help you create very realistic 3D designs - in the right hands. Again, this product is more for the intermediate CAD pro than for the average home user.

Support & Documentation:

This product is available for both PC and Mac computers, and Artifice offers support through the application, email, and online forums. There is some confusion about which Mac Operating Systems this program runs on. Users have reported that it doesn't work on newer OS X versions, like 10.4 and beyond, so buyer beware.

Summary:

Design Workshop Classic can help you create some really nice 3D environments, but be prepared to invest a good deal of time learning the ins and outs of the program.

Fast Plans, from Black Mountain Software, is the most cumbersome software we've used in a while. Creating the most basic walls requires patience, and to get anything more than a few walls put up requires frequent reference to the help system, which is a task in and of itself.

Features & Tools:

2D design has been around long enough that most basic features are standard, and this product is no exception. You can either create your own rooms and home designs, or use the pre-made ones.The way that you create rooms is a little awkward, and even when you learn the process, it's still a little difficult to complete most tasks quickly.

Summary:

Prepare to spend a bit of time learning how to navigate this program. It's just not quite as intuitive as most other Home Design programs we've used. It's not a bad product for creating very simple 2D floorplans, but for more than 50 dollars, you can get an easier to use and more full-featured product.

Total 3D Home & Landscape Design Suite

Total 3D Home Deluxe by Individual Software gives consumers the ability to put together a complete floor plan from scratch quickly. The downside to this program is that it offers much less detailed and customized design options, and some strange quirks when viewing in 3D mode. Even so, this program is great if you just want to experiment a little with your current home, or dream a little about a future home, and for the price it’s great for both.

Aesthetic Appeal:

Total 3D Home Deluxe is not as eye-candy-filled as the higher-ranked programs, but it has some really interesting design options to play with, like the Decorating Tools. You can choose any room in the house, and “decorate” each room with pre-designed templates, or make your own. It’s easy to use, and fun!

Features & Tools:

To put your home design together, you simply click on the specific room block you want, drag it to the appropriate location on your plan and then drop and resize it to fit. It’s quite simple.

Total 3D Home Deluxe also includes over 20,000 real product images to help you better visualize and reach your home design goal.

Once you've completed your design, you can use Total 3D Home Deluxe's 3-D feature to walk through the inside or fly around the outside your virtual home. This is what we found a little more than cumbersome. We found in 3D mode you must “walk” through an opening, like a door, otherwise you can’t get inside the house by moving your mouse through. This can get a little annoying when trying to move through the interior.

Support & Documentation:

The help support Individual Software provides for Total 3D Home Deluxe is improved over past versions, but still not quite as complete as we’d like. The program does, however, offer helpful video tutorials to aid new users.

Ease of Use:

This software makes it really easy to build and decorate a house, but it's difficult to view the interior in 3D mode.

Summary:

Total 3D Home Deluxe by Individual Software is a quick, inexpensive home design program that's a good fit for people who don't need to add much detail to their house plans, or want to explore interior decorating ideas.

Instant Architect 12

Our number 3 ranked home design software and "TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award" winner is Instant Architect by IMSI Design. It's an inexpensive, no-frills home design software product that's easy to learn, and offers a solid set of home design features.

The main reason Instant Architect didn't receive a higher ranking was its lack of sample house plans, and a few other features. Aesthetic Appeal:

Instant Architect’s interface is clean and simple, and the way tools are grouped makes it easy to build a home. The 3D models for furniture, appliances, and the like don’t quite rival that of Home Designer 8.0, but they’re realistic enough to make your designs come to life. Bottom line: You can easily get the job done, with a reasonable idea of what the end result will be.

Features & Tools:

Instant Architect has a great house builder wizard that guides you through the process of setting up a basic home, from the foundation up. It literally takes about a minute to build a home and then customize to your liking.

The object library, or catalog, has 3D models for appliances, furniture, fixtures, and lighting, but what really set it apart was the ability to edit object properties: You can edit the appearance, dimensions, and even enter the manufacturer and price information, to aid in creating a budget. In fact, we really liked how we could double-click and edit just about any object in real-time.

Support & Documentation:

Instant Architect comes with a Getting Started Guide, and includes application help and online FAQs, tips, and tricks. There were no video tutorials, which we found helpful with the top two products, but all in all their help system answered most questions.

Ease of Use:

Instant Architect is very easy to learn with step by step home design walkthroughs and a simple, uncluttered interface.

Summary:

For the price, Instant Architect from IMSI Design is an excellent product that will help you put together your dream home, or just remodel your kitchen. Keep in mind that this product doesn’t let you create or edit landscapes, and we would have liked to be able to build upon existing floor plans, or at least import our own.

If you need a more robust all-in-one solution, TurboFLOORPLAN Home & Landscape Pro has everything Instant Architect has, and also includes: sample house plans, terrain, deck, and patio builders, a 7,500-plant database, seasonal change simulation, and more. IMSI Design is a serious contender for casual and professional home design.

Bloons Tower Defense takes a new tack (pun intended) on the tower defense genre, creating a surprisingly refreshing and streamlined play experience. Like many tower defense games, Bloons TD doesn't even bother with the pretense of a plot. All you know is that you are charged with hiring dart-throwing monkeys and other puncturing, exploding, and freezing contraptions to destroy 50 waves of balloons before they reach the end of your path. Simple enough.

Those of us familiar with tower defense games know that enemies typically become stronger with each wave, getting more hit points and gradually becoming all but impervious to any towers you haven't been upgrading to keep up with them. Not in Bloons Tower Defense! More difficult enemies can still be popped with one hit--the problem is that like Russian matryoshka dolls, they have more bloons hiding inside of them that must also be popped. The result is a game you can literally win by just placing down a bunch of the most basic tower. Some people don't like that, and admittedly, Bloons Tower Defense is definitely on the easy side.

Still, the simplicity of the gameplay in Bloons Tower Defense has made it an attractive choice for casual gamers who've never even heard of tower defense, much less compared BTD to more "hardcore" alternatives. If Desktop Tower Defense is the Soul Calibur of tower defense games, Bloons Tower Defense is the genre's Super Smash Bros. If you've never played a tower defense game before, this game is a great one to start with. Even if you have, though, BTD is worth a try for its refreshing take on the genre.

nternet connectivity in India and the $11-billion business process outsourcing (BPO) industry faced a major disruption Thursday after damage to two undersea cables in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Alexandria in Egypt.

"Some 60 percent of the bandwidth has been affected after the damage," Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) President Rajesh Chharia said, as Internet surfers in the country struggled with slow speeds and repeated breakdowns.

"The load is being borne by the remaining 40 percent," Chharia told IANS, adding that large IT companies like Wipro and Infosys Technologies were not affected as much since they had backups to reroute their traffic through the Pacific.

But smaller and medium-sized outsourcing companies were facing an acute shortage of bandwidth. "The majority of IT companies and call centres using the Atlantic route to connect with the US have been badly affected," he added.

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) estimates the size of India's outsourcing industry at $11 billion, with more than 700,000 employees. The industry caters to 25 countries with a 40 percent market share.

The extent of financial damage to BPO companies was still being ascertained.

According to reports from Cairo, two undersea cables were cut near Alexandria on Egypt's north coast and one of them belonged to FLAG Telecom, which is a part of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.

Chharia said firms serving the US east coast and some parts of the UK are the worst affected.

"They have to arrange for backups soon. Otherwise, they have to accept the poor quality for some time until the fiber is restored."

Quoting Egyptian agencies, reports said the damage was caused during anchoring of a ship there. Apart from India, the breakdown affected Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

Among India's neighbors, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka also reported disruptions.

"Slow connectivity, choking and other problems have been caused across India due the cable damage," Chharia said, adding it may take 10-15 days for normalcy to be restored.

Reports from Egypt also suggested some delays in restoration work due to bad weather.

According to a spokesperson for the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, India's largest communications carrier, only 10-15 percent of international connectivity faced problems.

However, one area where it's been low-key in India has been in the larger sizes of 20" and above. Looking to change this, Samsung recently introduced a clutch of large widescreens. The 206NW is one such model, and is the product that we will be reviewing today.

he 206NW follows a standard design and color scheme, as you can see from the pictures. The monitor housing has a glossy piano black finish, which is used by virtually every manufacturer today. The bezel follows the same color pattern and is only differentiated at the bottom by a slim aluminum strip that houses the various OSD controls and a large plain silver power button.The base of the monitor is made of soft plastic that is sturdy and allows easy movement. The degree of movement is practically 360 degrees by way of tilt and swivel, but does not offer anything by way of height adjustment. This does affect viewing, as one can’t customize the viewing angle at all – it may even be a deal breaker for some.

The back of the monitor is unassuming and sports just the power plug and D-Sub port. A point of interest is the smoothness of the OSD control panel. Its buttons are well spaced and offer an easy customization experience with quick key presses. Physically the monitor is not slim or stunningly sexy, but being a Samsung its better-looking than most. The only glitch (which seems to affect every monitor these days) is that the glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet.
