Protect Your Computer from Viruses-Using Anti Virus

If you are the type of person that likes to download lots of files of the internet, you could be pushing your luck when it comes to getting a computer virus. If this is the case, I'll assert that you have little understanding of just how vulnerable you are to getting infected. This article is my way of helping you avoid the dreaded infestations.Listed below are some of the guidelines you can follow in order to keep those nasty viruses from making a mess out of your computer and your life.

1. Get yourself some antivirus software from a respected company such as Norton Antivirus software. You should set it up to run automatically every time you turn your computer on.

2. Make sure to keep your antivirus software up to date by either using the automatic update feature that many come with or make it a habit to manually check at least once or twice a week for updates on your own.

3. The antivirus software can also scan for Macro Viruses. This type of virus is usually hidden in word processing documents that you may receive in an email.

4. Downloading software from the internet should not be done too often. It is very easy to get infected this way, even though there may be lots of great programs available This is very risky.

5. There are many ways to swap data between two different computers. I don't recommend you do this unless it is unavoidable, and even then you must scan the storage device you are transferring from for viruses.

6. When transferring data using a floppy disc, the disc must be formatted first.

7. Only use trusted vendors when you are buying new software for your computer.

8. Never install software that is pirated. This is not only illegal but also a great way to get infected with a virus.

9. Before you open and install a program you have downloaded of the internet, ALWAYS scan them for computer viruses.

10. One very important task is to back your computer files regularly. This will ensure that if, after all your prevention measures, you do still catch a virus it can be removed, and the lost files can be replaced with the ones that were saved.Finally, it is not guaranteed that if you follow the above steps that you will not be the victim of a computer virus, but you can sure bet that if followed you will greatly reduce the chance of being an unsuspecting recipient of such an unwanted program.

AVG Anti-virus

This is actually a pretty popular software program, so it's possible that you already have it. AVG Anti-Virus is, you guessed it, an anti virus program. So why should you download AVG when you could go out and buy Norton or McAfee? Well, AVG Anti-Virus has a free version. That's right, you don't need to pay any money to protect yourself from viruses! Just download the free version of AVG, update often, and put your computer virus worries to rest.

I've been using AVG Free as my anti-virus software for well over a year now. Having had nothing but problems with Norton products, and not liking the myriad processes and services invoked by McAfee, the more configurable AVG has proven a natural fit for my behave-wisely-and only-scan-when-something-seems-amiss philosophy. And, as you might've guessed from the name, it doesn't cost a dime.

My first impression of version 8 was that the company had finally got its GUI act together. Gone were the separate control, test, and vault applets and multiple settings dialogs. All the functions are now under one roof and settings melded into an expandable tree/tab control that makes adjusting the program far more intuitive and far less time consuming. Also, the new look introduced by version 8 is far more attractive than the old one, which often reminded me of Windows 98.

At first blush, version 8 also seemed quite a bit more effective than version 7, though updates to the version 7 virus database helped with that older utility quite a bit when I tested both side by side, as well as versus online scanners such as Trend Micro's House Call and Bit Defender. Unfortunately, as with most AV programs, AVG's false positive rate seems to have gone up as well. That said, AVG8 seemed about on par with the rest of the pack in that regard.
AVG 8 Free doesn't offer the rootkit or full spyware protection that the pay version has, and support is limited to the documentation found on the site and in user forums. However, the free version does offer a new toolbar for your browser to help fight off attacks from that quarter.
For those who share my minimalist philosophy, AVG is still configurable to the point where you can disable it and run it only when you think you've been invaded or have downloaded something suspect. And even when it is running in full auto mode, there are only two services and a system tray applet draining minimal CPU cycles. Alongside the equally low-profile NOD32 (which isn't free) and Antivira, AVG is my favorite AV software
Tip: When things are really a mess, boot to Windows Safe Mode (press F8 when booting) and run AVG 8. As do other AV programs, it will then scan using the command line interface with no nasty services running that might interfere.

Three Ways to Speed Your PC

Slow computers are incredibly annoying and frustrating, preventing you from being able to do a number of things properly. Luckily, there are several ways

1. Uninstall unwanted programs

Many programs that you install have parts which are constantly running without you knowing. They are known as running "in the background" and take up a lot of system resources, making your computer run slower for no reason. Such programs which are famous for doing this are AIM and Outlook.
To stop this problem, you should uninstall any program that you don't need /want any more. To do this, you just need to go into the Windows CONTROL PANEL - ADD / REMOVE PROGRAMS and then scroll down the list, removing the programs you don't want. You need to be careful here, because if you don't know what a program does, you should check it out online, because if you remove the wrong one, you could do a lot more harm than good to your Pc.

2. Clear out any junk files

Especially thanks to high speed Internet, many people are now collecting huge amount of files on their computers which the simply don't need. Pictures, movies, document & web pages are just some of the junk that are cluttering up computers now. Although this seems okay, the truth is that the more files you have on your PC, the slower your PC will run.
Every time you boot up Windows, it actually takes all the files on your hard drives and creates a "map" of where they all are. This is known as file "indexing" and is what every Windows PC does to help it search your hard drives quicker. This is okay, but if you've got lots of junk files in there, this process will take a lot longer, making your computer slow down dramatically.
To fix this, you just need to remove any junk files on your PC. Just go to the folders where you like to save your files, select the ones you want to delete and then hold down SHIFT & click DELETE. This will permanently delete the files, instead of sending them to the recycle bin, allowing you to quickly make the most of your hard drive space

3. Clean out the registry

The registry is the central database for Windows, which stores all the settings and options for your computer. Everything from your latest emails to your desktop wallpaper are kept in here, allowing your computer to "remember" a lot of things even when it's turned off and on again.
The problem is that this database often gets full of corrupted and damaged registry files, which forces your computer to take longer to read them. With many computers having 1,000's of damaged registry files, it's one of the biggest causes of a slow system, and one which is easily fixed with a registry cleaner.

Registry cleaners are software tools which scan through all your registry files and fix the bad ones that are slowing down your PC. The best registry cleaner for this job is one called RegAce
