Dolby TrueHD is an advanced lossless multi-channel audio codec, intended primarily for high-definition home-entertainment equipment, such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. In this application, Dolby TrueHD competes with DTS-HD Master Audio, another lossless codec from Digital Theater System.
Dolby TrueHD uses Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) as its mathematical basis for compressing audio samples. MLP was used on the earlier DVD-Audio format, but details of TrueHD and DVD-Audio differ substantially. A Dolby TrueHD bitstream can carry up to 14 discrete sound channels. Sample-depths up to 24 bits/sample and audio sample-rates up to 192 kHz are supported. Like the more common legacy codec Dolby Digital, TrueHD bitstreams carry program metadata. Metadata is separate from the coding format and compressed audio samples, but stores relevant information about the audio waveform. For example, dialog normalization and Dynamic range compression are controlled by metadata embedded in the TrueHD bitstream.
In the HD DVD format, TrueHD is a mandatory codec – all HD DVD players must support the extraction and decoding of a 2-channel (stereo) waveform from a TrueHD bitstream, although all HD DVD players currently support 5.1 decoding. HD DVD allows the sole (primary) audiotrack of a movie to be encoded in TrueHD, with no (other) secondary audiotracks present. In Blu-ray Disc, TrueHD is an optional codec, meaning that TrueHD may only be present on a disc which already contains a sountrack encoded in one of the mandatory formats, such as Dolby Digital, DTS or PCM. The primary Dolby Digital audiotrack ensures all Blu-ray players, including those incapable of processing TrueHD, can access a playable audiotrack.
For both HD DVD and Blu-ray, TrueHD's capabilities are the same: the program may carry up to 8 discrete audio channels, at a sample depth & rate of 24-bit/96 kHz (Blu-Ray Disc format specification allows also for encoding up to 6 channels at 192 kHz). The maximum (disc) encoded bitrate is 18 Mbit/s, although movie-titles (thus far) have remained below 5 Mbit/s. All TrueHD players are capable of downmixing the decoded TrueHD audiotrack to an arbitrary number of channels more suitable for player output. Dolby Digital Plus (DD+ or E-AC-3), is a digital audio compression scheme developed specifically for the introduction of HDTV and HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc. It is a development of the earlier Dolby Digital system. Compared to Dolby Digital it supports a greater range of bitrates at higher quality and up to thirteen full range audio channels compared with Dolby Digital's five. The compression algorithm also has a number of improvements aimed at increasing quality at a given bitrate compared with Dolby Digital.

Dolby Digital Plus software is not directly backward compatible with existing Dolby Digital decoders. However, Dolby Digital Plus capable players are required to be able to transform the output to a backwards compatible Dolby Digital signal.

Dolby Digital Plus offers increased bitrates (up to 6.144 Mbit/s), support for more audio channels (up to 13.1), improved coding techniques to reduce compression artifacts, and backward compatibility with existing AC-3 hardware.

The maximum number of discrete coded channels is the same for both formats: 7.1. However, HD DVD and Blu-ray impose different technical constraints on the supported audio-codecs. Hence, the usage of DD+ differs substantially between HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Dolby Digital Surround EX was co-developed by Dolby and Lucasfilm THX. It provides an economical and backwards-compatible means for 5.1 soundtracks to carry a sixth, center back surround channel for improved localization of effects. The extra surround channel is matrix encoded onto the discrete Left Surround and Right Surround channels of the 5.1 mix, much like the front center channel on Dolby Surround encoded stereo soundtracks.

The result can be played without loss of information on standard 5.1 systems, or played in 6.1 or 7.1 on systems equipped with Surround EX decoding and additional speakers. Dolby Digital Surround EX has since been used for the Star Wars prequels on the DVD versions and also the remastered original Star Wars trilogy. A number of DVDs have Dolby Digital Surround EX audio option.

Dolby Digital (AC-3) is the marketing name for a series of lossy audio compression technologies developed by Dolby Laboratories. Dolby Digital Logo that is sometimes shown at the beginning of broadcasts, feature films, and games. Dolby Digital, or AC-3, is the common version containing up to six discrete channels of sound, with five channels for normal-range speakers (20 Hz – 20,000 Hz) (right front, center, left front, right rear and left rear) and one channel (20 Hz – 120 Hz) for the subwoofer driven low-frequency effects. Mono and stereo modes are also supported. AC-3 supports audio sample-rates up to 48kHz.
Dolby Digital includes several similar technologies, which include Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Digital Live, Dolby Digital Surround EX, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby TrueHD.

Dolby Stereo/ Dolby Analog was the original analog optical technology developed by Dolby Laboratories for 35 mm film prints in 1976.The optical soundtrack on a Dolby Stereo encoded 35mm film not only carried left and right tracks for stereophonic sound, but also, through a matrix decoding system, a third center channel, and a fourth surround channel (which is heard over speakers on the sides and rear of the theater) for ambient sound and special effects. This yielded a total of four sound channels, in the physical track space previously allocated for just one mono optical channel.

Incorporated its A-Type noise reduction into the Dolby Stereo process. The original Dolby Stereo was first used on the 1975 Ken Russell film Lisztomania, in a 3-channel LCR configuration. The success of 1977's Star Wars, which used the four channel system to great effect, did much to encourage movie theaters to convert to the 4-channel LCRS speaker configuration.

Dolby Stereo Key feature of this system was its backward-compatibility: the same print could play anywhere, from an older drive-in theater with mono sound to a cinema which had upgraded its system with a Dolby Stereo processor. Thus, there was no need (nor expense) in carrying a double inventory of prints for distribution. Dolby Stereo was displaced in 35 mm motion picture exhibition by the Dolby SR format (1980s). Dolby SR is still included on all theatrical release prints encoded with Dolby Digital, as the default track, if something goes wrong with decoding the digital track. Also the Dolby SR track is used in theaters not equipped for Dolby Digital playback.

When a Dolby Surround soundtrack is produced, four channels of audio information: left, center, right, and mono surround; are matrix-encoded onto two audio tracks. The stereo information is then carried on stereo sources such as videotapes, laserdiscs and television broadcasts from which the surround information can be decoded by a processor to recreate the original four-channel surround sound. Without the decoder, the information still plays in standard stereo or monaural. The Dolby Surround decoding technology was updated during the 1980s and re-named Dolby Pro Logic. The terms Dolby Surround and LtRt are used to describe soundtracks that are matrix-encoded using this technique.

THX ( Tomlinson Holman's eXperiment ) is the trade name of a high-fidelity sound reproduction standard for movie theaters, screening rooms, home theaters, computer speakers, gaming consoles, and car audio systems.

The THX system is not a recording technology, and it does not specify a sound recording format: all sound formats, whether digital (Dolby Digital, SDDS) or analog (Dolby SR, Ultra-Stereo), can be "shown in THX." THX is mainly a quality assurance system. THX-certified theaters provide a high-quality, predictable playback environment to ensure that any film soundtrack mixed in THX will sound as near as possible to the intentions of the mixing engineer. THX also provides certified theaters with a special crossover circuit whose use is part of the standard. Certification of an auditorium entails specific acoustic and other technical requirements; architectural requirements include a floating floor, baffled and acoustically treated walls, no parallel walls (to reduce standing waves), a perforated screen (to allow center channel continuity), and NC30 rating for background noise.

Stereo (Stereophonic sound), is the reproduction of sound, using two or more independent audio channels, through a symmetrical configuration of loudspeakers, in such a way as to create a pleasant and natural impression of sound heard from various directions, as in natural hearing. It is often contrasted with monophonic (or "monaural", or just mono) sound, where audio is in the form of one channel, often centered in the sound field (analogous to a visual field).
In popular usage, stereo usually means 2 channel sound recording and sound reproduction using data for more than one speaker simultaneously.
In technical usage, stereo means sound recording and sound reproduction that uses stereographic projection to encode the relative positions of objects and events recorded. A stereo system can include any number of channels, such as the surround sound 5.1- and 6.1-channel systems used on high-end film and television productions. However, in common use it refers to systems with only two channels.

A Surround sound refers to the application of multichannel audio to channels encircling the audience (generally some combination of left surround, right surround, and back surround) as opposed to "screen channels" (center, [front] left, and [front] right), i.e. around 360° in the horizontal plane (2D). The sphere (3D) of human hearing perception can be approached by adding channels above and below the listener. Surround sound : A movie recording technique that, when paired with a home theater surround speaker system, puts the viewer in the center of the action with sounds that move front to back, side to side.
Consumer surround sound formats include sound on videocassettes, Video DVDs, and HDTV broadcasts encoded as Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, or DTS. Other formats include the competing DVD-Audio (DVD-A) and Super Audio CD (SACD) formats; and MP3 Surround.
Theatrical film 5.1 surround formats include Dolby Digital, DTS, and Sony Dynamic Digital Sound (SDDS).
Surround sound hardware is mostly used by movie productions and sophisticated video games. However, some consumer camcorders have surround sound capability either built-in or available as an add-on. Some consumer electronic devices (AV receivers, stereos, and computer soundcards) have digital signal processors or digital audio processors built into them to simulate surround sound from stereo sources.

Now the sound quality of computer speakers has improved greatly within the past decades especially since almost everyone owns a computer (Desktop, Laptop/Notebook). Such advances are due to a boom in interests such as gaming (PC Game, Consoles game Player) and home theater systems therefore resulting in new products and enhancements to speaker systems. This is big because of the “freedom” with these new innovations that allow users to bring them and use them without the restriction of the cable or wire connections. The only negative aspect is that there is a certain range that restricts how far the item can be from the computer in order for it to work. For example there was Adobe 5.0 but now there’s Adobe 7.0 and so on. Currently speaker systems go as high as 5.1 or 7.1 and most likely that number will increase over the next few years. Most likely this increase in the versions numbers is going to have higher sound quality which means richer sounds, no lag time in the sound, a wider range of sounds, and producing realistic quality sounds. Though the higher the number doesn't necessarily mean that the sound quality is better than an earlier version so this is something to look out for.

A Surround sound is a pretty new concept and delivers dynamic sound in the entertainment industry and is growing rapidly as more and more people are buying more products. In this technological boom more people are buying home entertainment systems and included in these systems are speakers, which create a surround sound effect. Just recently there are speakers being built into walls and varying designs that allow speakers to be mounted in certain positions. As a result the positioning allows for realistic sound quality.
