Dare to be Digital, the leading international computer game design competition, is calling for talented student programmers and artists to apply with games ideas targeted for any platforms including social networking sites, mobile phones, pc and any consoles.

Dare to be Digital will be held at the University of Abertay, Dundee, UK. Each Dare 2010 contestant will get £1,700 stipend, free accommodation, hardware, software and mentoring from industry professionals. Three prizes of £2500 will be awarded to the three highest scoring games.

Dare to be Digital, organised and promoted by the University of Abertay Dundee is a video games development competition for undergraduates at Universities and Colleges of Art. Teams of five students, usually a mix of artists, programmers and audio, assemble in the development hothouse for 10 weeks to develop a prototype video game, receiving daily support and weekly training sessions from industry specialists.

At the end of the competition, the prototypes are displayed at a special talent showcasing event in Edinburgh, Dare ProtoPlay, as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. The general public as well as industry experts get to play and vote for the games. Prizes are then awarded to the winning teams at a special awards ceremony. Later in the year the winning teams attend the BAFTA Video Games Awards to compete for the coveted “Ones to Watch” Award.

The Dare to be Digital competition is now in its eleventh year and has become established as the premier talent spotting event amongst industry with the three winning games going forward as the sole nominees for the BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ Award.

Last year’s winning titles covered a range of genres and included a 3D puzzle platformer, an adventure platformer and a single player 3rd person 3D action-stealth game.  Ideas varied from objects shrinking, museum thieves on a mission and playing with colours. All three winning teams will be attending the BAFTA Video Games Award in March in London where one team will take home the ultimate prize of the BAFTA Award.

The competition organised and promoted by the University of Abertay Dundee, will involve dozens of arts and science graduates and undergraduates from all over the world competing in the Dare hothouse at Abertay in Dundee Scotland.  Teams will be selected, supported and judged by some of the top games studios from across the UK, and the winners become eligible for a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) award.

The teams will spend 10 weeks over the summer turning their ideas into fully functioning prototypes. They receive regular industry visits as well as a weekly wage, accommodation and equipment. Enthusiasts can follow the progress of their favourite games online and interact with the teams via the Dare website. At the end of 10 weeks, the teams face the ultimate challenge – showcasing their games to an audience of thousands at Dare ProtoPlay, part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August.

Best Ways To Handle PC Startup And Shutdown Problems

In this article we will look at steps to resolve one of the most common Windows PC startup and shutdown errors known as DLL errors.

You may encounter a DLL error, such as the mfc80u.dll or comdlg32.dll error when you start or shutdown your Windows computer. Contrary to popular belief, DLL errors can be easily resolved and there is no need to be intimidated by them. Simply perform the following steps to fix DLL errors:

Extract the DLL file from your Windows installation disc

Some third-party software programs are known to replace Windows files, such as the comdlg32.dll file with their own DLL files. As a result, when you install such programs, you may encounter a DLL error. To fix this kind of DLL issue, extract the DLL file reported in the error message from your Windows installation disc.

Download the missing DLL file from the Internet

In case the DLL file mentioned in the error message is not a Windows file, then you can repair the missing DLL error by downloading a fresh copy of the DLL file from a trustworthy online DLL directory. Save the DLL file in its correct location. If you are not sure of this location, then you can save the DLL file in your System folder (By default, for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP the System folder is C:\Windows\System32).

Complete a malware scan

If you find that the DLL file reported in the error message is present on your computer, then chances are high that the DLL file might be corrupt.

Malware infection is the most common reason why DLL files become corrupt. This is because malware programs, such as worms and viruses manipulate and alter the contents of DLL files and make them inaccessible to other programs or processes.

To fix this issue, you should perform a malware scan on your computer using advanced antivirus and antispyware tools to remove malware from your system.

Reinstall the program that is generating the error

If a thorough malware scan does not report any presence of malware programs then one or more files of the program that is generating the DLL error may have become corrupt for some reason. To fix the error, uninstall and then reinstall the program with which you are getting the DLL error.

Install the latest drivers

When I made the leap to an iMac I knew it would be a new experience for sure. As I got going and the years went on, there were several things that I learned along the way and said to myself “I wish I knew that when I got started!” I have made a list of them below to help out anyone that has recently switched to a Mac or may be doing so in the future (bookmark this page).

Screen Shot

There are many ways to take a screen-shot on a Mac but my favorite and the most flexible is done by holding down “command/apple key”, the “shift” key and the number “4″. Your cursor will turn to cross-hairs and now you can click anywhere on the screen and drag, creating a box. When you let go of the mouse button, the image is automatically saved to the desktop!

Tune Up

This program is great and has many functions, but if you are like me and have thousands of songs from years ago on your computer, there is one function of this app that really comes in handy. A lot of my songs were all mis-labeled or spelled wrong. This becomes a pain when searching for songs later on. With the Tune up application it runs right along side of iTunes and you can drag all of your songs into the main screen, it then looks up each song and comes back with suggestion and shows you the proper album, song and artist. Once you hit “save” it will then change the song name, artist, album and genre to the correct name and spelling. Sounds simple but it’s great when you have thousands of songs to go through!

Flip4mac

This last one is an application that will convert .WMA or windows media files into Quick Time format so that you can easily view different video you come across on websites or one of your friends emailed you.

Syncing your Safari Bookmarks to your iPhone

1. Start by plugging in your iPhone or iPod touch in to your Mac.
2. Open up iTunes.
3. Select your iPhone or iPod in the Devices section on the left-hand side of the iTunes menu. The right-hand side of the iTunes window displays settings tabs for the selected device.
4. Select the "Info" tab.
5. Scroll down to the “Web Browser" section on the Info tab.
6. Check the box next to "Sync Safari" bookmarks.

Now when you sync your iPod touch or iPhone with your Mac, the Safari bookmarks will be transferred.

Lock screen when I am away
There are a couple of ways to tell your Mac to require a password when you leave it. The easiest way for me is to set “Require password after sleep or screen saver begins” in the “Security” section of System Preferences. Here, you can also set a time limit so a password isn’t required right away, but only after 15 minutes for example.

These are just a few of the things that I love about my Mac now, I just can’t list all of my secrets!
