Cloud computing to improve security - Microsoft

Cloud computing adds security challenges, but also provides opportunities to improve security posture, according to Steve Lipner, senior director of security engineering strategy at Microsoft.

In addition to traditional threats such as cross-site scripting, code injection and denial of service, cloud computing expands some of those threats and introduces others, he said.
“Data privacy issues such as data location and segregation, and privileged access control, become greater in the cloud, for example,” he said.

Threats introduced by cloud computing infrastructures include new types of privilege escalation vulnerabilities from virtual machine (VM) to host or VM to VM.

“These are the kinds of new issues that organisations looking at cloud services need to ensure have been taken care of by service providers”, said Microsoft's Lipner. But the good news, he said, is that the cloud computing model also provides opportunities to mitigate threats, such as slow or incomplete security patching.

“With cloud services, patching is automated to ensure all applications are up to date from a security point of view at all times” said Lipner. Instances of applications can also be run on more secure systems within the service providers’ infrastructure and there is greater resilience across the service, he said. But Lipner said the decision to move to cloud services is ultimately a business decision that must be taken based on a risk analysis.
“There is always a trade-off between cost and security”, he said.

Limewire scrambles to avoid annihilation

The company that operates the LimeWire file-sharing software continues to maneuver in an effort to save the company from a potential court-ordered closure but time is slipping away.

Two weeks ago, U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood handed a major legal victory to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which filed a copyright lawsuit against the Lime Wire company in 2006. She ruled that Lime Group, parent of LimeWire software maker Lime Wire, and founder Mark Gorton are liable for copyright infringement.

Lime Group and Gorton could be required to pay hundreds of millions in damages and legal experts say the music industry now has the means to force the service to cease operations. On Wednesday, attorneys for Lime Group filed a motion with the court asking Wood to reconsider her decision, according to court documents obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

Lime Group lawyers wrote that the judge made numerous errors in her decision, such as finding that Gorton received a direct financial benefit from the copyright infringement. She also "failed to consider whether Lime Group had the ability to supervise the particular Lime Wire actions," the lawyers claimed in their filing.

Lime Group’s filing is standard operating procedure for companies in this kind of situation. It’s the legal equivalent of football’s “Hail Mary” pass. The RIAA could ask the judge for an injunction to force a Lime Wire shut down at a hearing Wood scheduled for June 7. Legal experts have said that Lime Group’s chances of keeping the doors open are slim at best.
In addition to the 12th-hour court filing, Lime Group has also reached out to some of the four major labels in an effort to negotiate a deal that might save the company, according to multiple music industry sources. This too is a long shot.

“Lime Wire’s decision (to set the site’s filter to off) was a conscious design choice, the direct result of which was a failure to mitigate infringement.”

“(LimeWire managers) could have made the hash-based content filter mandatory for all LimeWire users, or made ‘on’ the default setting, so that a user’s file-sharing activities would be subject to the filtering process unless he affirmatively deactivated the filter. According to (the company’s) expert Steven Gribble, (the company) chose to set the filter to ‘off’ because it wished to provide users with ‘enough flexibility to enable, disable, or configure filtering.’ (Managers’) decision was a conscious ‘design choice,’ the direct result of which was a failure to mitigate infringement.”

Symantec pushes security for Android, iPhone smartphones

Symantec's Norton division today launched its "Norton Everywhere" initiative aimed at bringing security protections and cloud-storage access to the Google Android and Apple iPhone smartphones.

The initial products, announced Thursday, include a beta version of security software for Android and Apple smartphones and a beta of Norton DNS.

he Norton Connect apps are expected to be available in June from the iPhone and Android apps stores. The Android version will also be available directly from Symantec.

Also due in June is data-protection and management software for Android called Norton Smartphone Security for Android 1.0. This software, Norton's first subscription-based security software for Android, will let users remotely disable a phone if it's stolen or lost.

"You can send a text message to your phone and wipe all the data from your phone and lock it," Nadir says. "We include a tutorial that walks you through and lets you try it in test mode."

The Smartphone Security for Android software also will watch for known malware, though there's not much of it for Android today, Nadir acknowledges. Norton designed the security-protection software to watch the apps you're running on Android, and it will "flag apps behaving in suspicious ways, such as sending personal data out," Nadir says.

As reports of any sneaky apps come in, Norton will keep track of them. "We identify the app and if it's bad for some reason, we add it to a black list," Nadir says.

The software also has a call-blocking mechanism and a way to tell who's calling you. Another feature Norton is calling "roaming protection" will notify you if you're in a different roaming area, where additional charges are likely to apply.

The Norton DNS service will flag or even block dangerous content or Web sites. If you're on an iPad and you think e-mail is from your bank but it's a phishing page, the service will block it, Nadir says. Symantec's Norton division partnered with New Hampshire-based Dyn, which operates a global DNS network, to integrate security-scanning protections into Norton DNS. It works in the background without need for any software on the user's device.

Norton DNS is a grand experiment set to commence in June, and Norton will be trying to get users to give it a whirl in a couple of ways. First, Norton will make available a client wizard app for download that would walk users through the process of accessing Norton DNS (though techie types could do it manually, Nadir adds).

Later, the company will offer a way to configure a home router to access the Norton DNS security service. Norton has no plans to charge users for the DNS-based security service, though the company may be able to generate some revenue through sponsored links.

Another new field Norton is branching into is a new type of partnership with consumer electronics companies that want to make use of the security firm's LiveUpdate technology, which is used today to push out security-related updates to products over the Internet.

Here is a step by step procedure on how to set and configure the windows xp power options.

Click on Start - Control panel and then select "Power Options"

The Power Options properties dialog box comes up.

By default the Windows XP power options has six profiles.

1. Home/Office Desk : For desktop computers in Home and Office. This profile will turn off the monitor after 20 mins when running on AC power source. When running on Battery power source it will turn off the monitor after 5min, hard disk after 10min and the system will go into standby in 5 mins.

2. Portable/Laptop: For laptop and portable computers. This profile will turn off the monitor after 15 mins, hard disk after 30min and system will go into standby after 20 mins when running on AC power source. When running on Battery power source it will turn off the monitor after 5min, hard disk after 5min and the system will go into standby in 5 mins.

3. Presentation: For laptop or desktop computers running presentation. This profile will turn off nothing when running on AC power source. When running on Battery power source it will never turn off the monitor, turn off the hard disk after 5min and the system will go into standby in 15 mins.

4. Always On: In this profile only monitor is turned off in 20 mins when on AC power source and 15 mins when on Battery power source.

5. Minimal Power Management: This profile will turn off the monitor after 15 mins when running on AC power source. When running on Battery power source it will turn off the monitor after 5min, hard disk after 15min and the system will go into standby in 5 mins.

6. Max Battery: This profile will turn off the monitor after 15 mins and the system will go into standby after 20 mins when running on AC power source. When running on Battery power source it will turn off the monitor after 1min, hard disk after 3min and the system will go into standby in 2 mins.

You have to choose the options according to your needs.

Now click on the Alarms Tab

Low Battery Alarm notification comes up by default when the battery power reaches below 10%

Critical Battery Alarm comes up when the battery power reaches 3%. You need to close all your programs and shutdown the computer and recharge the battery immediately.

Now click on the Power Meter Tab.

It displays the current power status like the current power source and total battery power remaining.

If you want the power options icon to be displaed in the taskbar check "Always show icon on the taskbar"

If your Windows XP freezes randomly on startup you may be clueless so as what to do. Most of the computer users are non technical and hence unable to fix the problem themselves.

Here you will find detailed procedure for fixing this problem and understanding what caused the problem in the first place.

1. Shutdown your computer and then power on it and hold the F8 key down. Windows Advanced Options Menu comes up. Select the Safe Mode and press Enter.

2. The core system files required will now be loaded one by one and also displayed on the screen. You dont need to do anything just wait for the process to complete.

3. Login with your username and password and Windows will boot in the safe mode. The Safe Mode option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows. The default Microsoft VGA driver is used for display at 640 x 480 resolution and in 16 colors.

4. Click on No. Once you get in, you will notice that Windows is now running in safe mode, because "safe mode" is displayed in the four corners of your screen. You will also notice it by the reduced functionality and display settings.

What is System Restore?

System Restore takes snapshots of your computer and saves them as restore points. These restore points mark configuration places to return to, in the event of a problem with your computer that might occur after you install an unstable device driver or an older application. Because the snapshots are taken automatically and are restored through the System Restore Wizard, System Restore is both effective and user-friendly.

5.Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.

6. In the System Restore wizard, check the option to "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click next.

3. When the system loads at the command prompt type the following:

What if this option also fails?

Now you will need the Windows XP Installation CD and repair the Installation.

1. Turn off your computer and power on and Press F2 key. This will display the BIOS. Select the Boot options and then select "CD ROM" and deselect all other options so that the computer boots from the CD.

2. Press F8

3. Press R to Repair the Windows XP Installation.

4. Confirm by pressing Enter.

5. Wait for the automated process to finish.

6. When the process completes and the system restarts Press F2 to again go to the Boot Options and select Hard Disk as the primary option.

This will fix the problem.

How to make windows xp load (boot) faster

Windows xp remains a very popular operating system but over a period of time when more programs are installed the boot up time of the os can increase substantially making the system slow. There are various parameters that you can adjust to make windows xp load (boot) faster again.

Here is a step by step procedure on how to do so.

1. Install CCleaner.

2. Delete useless files and clean your windows registry.

3. Now Click on START --> RUN and type MSCONFIG to start Microsoft system configuration utility.

Now check /NOGUIBOOT and in the Timeout enter 3 sec. The /NOGUIBOOT option will not display the windows xp boot screen and the timeout of 3 sec is the lowest value that can be entered ( the time for which windows boot menu appears).

4. Now click on START --> RUN and type regedit. This will open up the windows registry editor.

5. Now click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to expand it.

6. Now click on SOFTWARE to expand it.

7. Now click on Microsoft to expand it.

8. Now scroll down to find Windows.

9. Now click on Windows to expand it.

10. Now click on CurrentVersion to expand it.

11 . Now scroll down and click on Run.

12. Now in the right side you will see the list of entries for each program that you have installed which have some or the other startup service running all the time. We dont use all the programs at a time so delete all the services and keep just Antivirus and wireless connection services running as i have done.

To delete right click on the service and select delete. Then close the window and reboot.

If you want to completely turn off the Windows XP boot screen logo then click on START --> RUN and type MSCONFIG.

This will start the Microsoft system configuration utility.

Click on the BOOT.INI tab and check the box next to /NOGUIBOOT
So the next time when you boot windows xp you will see nothing untill XP boots up complelety.

But what if you want your own boot screen instead of the default provided by windows xp.

1. Downlaod and install the free BootSkin XP.

2. Open the main bootskin window.

3. Now select the boot screen you want from the list. you can download other boot skins online or make your own. The image has to be 640x480 16 colors. So if you have a bigger sized picture-wall you need to drop its resolution to 640x480

Unlike other programs that can change the Windows boot screens, BootSkin does so in a safe manner. It doesn't patch the Windows kernel. Nor does it require the user to download replacement Windows kernels to do so.
