What those Social Networking Sites Terms of Service Mean for Photographers

Attorney Christopher J. Reese has just released his examination of the legalese in those Terms of Service Agreements that we all sign to use Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, and YouTube for the American Society of Media Photographers. I think that the results of his investigation will be of great interest to all of us digital photographers who share our work through any variety of social media services. I will be leading a one-day workshop on Adobe Photoshop CS4 for photographers on Saturday October 3 thanks to the Salmon Idaho Art's Council. In this hands-on class, I am going to cover tips on the Adobe Bridge, the Adobe Raw Converter, and on working with adjustment layers in Photoshop.

I'm headlining the show at this years Photo Tech 2009 Workshop presented by the ASMP Ohio Valley Chapter. It's going to be a great educational event! If you live anywhere near Cincinnati please come to this event November 12-13.

"Importing" means adding new images into your Lightroom Catalog. This is a critical step, and it is one of the first tasks that you will do with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Graduated Filters and Content-Aware Scaling Tutorial

I just released a new "behind-the scenes" video over at www.thelightroomlab.com in which I turn an original raw capture into a nice polished photograph using super-cool features of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop CS4. In my new movie, I use Graduated filters in Lightroom's Develop Module, and I use Content-Aware Scaling in Photoshop CS4 to create a much improved image.

The Content-Aware Scaling trick that I demonstrate in this tutorial is a trick that I learned from Photoshop master Mark S. Johnson's new Photographer's Photoshop CS4 Companion Ebook.
I've been working my way through Mark's book all month and I am learning a ton of amazing new techniques!

How I Store and Backup My Digital Images

I just posted a new article and video tutorial over at www.TheLightroomLab.com on how I store and protect my digital images using multiple external hard drives. Here's an excerpt:

As a professional digital photographer, I work with Adobe Photoshop and with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom every day. After eight years in the business of digital photography, I have shot about 30,000 images. I need a cost-effective, and scalable way, to store all of these images, but I also need a way to access any of these files from either my laptop or from my desktop.

Now there are many different ways to put together your image storage system. After years of experimentation, I have finally found a hardware / software setup that works really well for my needs.

Before we go any further, please let me define a couple of words here. When I use the term "cost-effective" I mean a storage media that is within my budget. External hard drives have got to be one of the world's greatest bargains. With today's prices, you can store huge amounts of data on an external disk for pennies per megabyte!

"Scalable" here means that my system can grow over time as I shoot more images without having to open up my computer and fiddle around with any of its internal hardware. My image library currently takes up about 300GB of disk space which fits beautifully on a LaCie d2 Quadra external hard disk. This 500GB external disk easily holds everything that I have shot plus it gives me room to grow.

When I get close to maxing out the free space on my 500GB disk, I will replace it with a 750GB or 1TB disk. Sure, I will have to buy another disk, or as you will see disks plural, but it is an easy process to copy all of my files from the almost full external hard drive over to its replacement. No tools required and minimal downtime for my business.

Computer For Digital Photography Recommendations: Spring 2009

I grew up with a PC and, trust me, I know my way around Windows. For seven years, I have been using and teaching digital photography on both Mac's and PC's. It pains me to say this, but the time has come when I am no longer comfortable recommending a Windows machine for digital photographers who are not already Windows IT level experts.

Bit of Truth: I still use, and love, Windows XP Pro only I am running it within my Mac! I use XP and Quicken for Windows everyday through VMware Fusion 2's virtualization engine for all of my bookkeeping Talk about getting the best of both worlds in one machine!

Please let me make it clear that there are plenty of digital photography experts who will vehemently disagree with my current Mac endorsements. If you are still thinking of a PC, please follow this link for my Dell 64-bit system recommendations.

NPR Stories on the 50th Anniversary of Robert Frank's The Americans

NPR produced two great stories recently marking the 50th anniversary of Robert Frank's The Americans. Fifty years later, Frank's book is still one of the most influential books in the history of photography. If you have never seen this book, I urge you to get your hands on a copy. Frank's photos are every bit as good today as they were back in the 1950's, and Jack Kerouac's introduction is still a great read.

I think that you will enjoy NPR's main report, and the extended coverage, even if you are already familiar with the backstory behind the work of Robert Frank. Be sure to read the article and listen to the audio of Frank discussing his life and work!
