The International Air Transport Association (IATA) yesterday announced an initiative to improve the on board space for carry-on bags. The initiative suggests that carry-on bag sizes should be standardised to avoid the frustration of luggage not fitting into the cabin overhead bin.
The new recommended size is slightly smaller than the current standards. The current regulation allows a single carry-on bag with a maximum weight of seven kilograms and within specified dimensions (36cm x 23cm x 56cm). IATA suggests a size of 55 x 35 x 20 cm (or 21.5 x 13.5 x 7.5 inches) which will allow everyone to store their carry-on bags on board aircraft of 120 seats with no hassles.
The CEO of the Association of South African Travel Agents, Otto De Vries, commented,
“In terms of our role, its key that we're not only aware of this recommendations but that we are able to convey them in an effective manner to our customers because obviously nobody wants to arrive at airports surprised by any requirements.”

The regulations are not implemented yet but merely a recommendation. The success of it depends on the number of airlines that will opt to implement the suggested regulations. He says the challenge is when passengers will have to deal with different sizes requirements depending on whether the airlines chose to implement or not.

From 1 June 2015, new regulations aimed at improving the safety of children travelling in and out of South Africa will be implemented.

Children under the age of 18 will require an *unabridged birth certificate* together with a passport when travelling abroad.

* An official signed and stamped certificate reflecting both parents' details.

CHILDREN TRAVEL DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS

CHILD TRAVELLING WITH BOTH PARENTS
Parents must produce an unabridged birth certificate and a valid passport for each child travelling.

CHILD TRAVELLING WITH ONE PARENT
Parents must produce an unabridged birth certificate, a valid passport and a court order / death certificate / affidavit confirming the absent parent has given permission for the child to travel.

CHILD TRAVELLING WITH A GUARDIAN
Guardian must produce an unabridged birth certificate, a valid passport and a court order / death certificate / affidavit confirming that the parents have given permission for the child to travel.

CHILD UNACCOMPANIED
Child must produce an unabridged birth certificate, a valid passport and a court order/death certificate / affidavit confirming permission to travel from both parents or legal guardian.
