If you’re new to using ovulation predictor kits (opks) to find out when you are most fertile, you’re probably wondering if you’ll recognize a positive opk test when you see one!

Ovulation predictor tests are used to detect the LH surge.  LH (shorthand  for luteinizing hormone)  is the hormone that peaks when there is a mature egg ready to be released from your ovary.  To maximize your chances to conceive a baby, you want to have intercourse before you ovulate.

This is why detecting the LH surge with a positive opk is so effective.  You’ll get a positive OPK result (indicting the LH surge has begun) before you actually ovulate, which is the ideal time for baby making.

When to Test with OPK

You should begin testing your urine with ovulation predictor test strips about a week before you suspect you will ovulate.  You can use our Ovulation Day Calculator to get a general idea of when you might expect ovulation to occur.

The best time of day to use an opk ovulation test is late afternoon or in the evening. If you tend to obsess about these things (ask me how I know), you can certainly test multiple times a day.  Use the inexpensive opk ovulation test strips available on the internet instead of buying them at the grocery store or pharmacy to save money.

OPK test kits vary, but the most common tests make use of paper test strips to test the level of luteinizing hormone present in your urine.  You can either urinate directly on the strips or dip them in urine you have collected in a cup.

How to Read the OPK

There are two lines that can appear on the opk strip after you have tested.  The first line is the control line  that should always clearly appear and indicates that the opk test is working properly.

The second line is the test  line that indicates the presence of luteinizing hormone in your urine.  You may always find, regardless of the time of month, that a faint test line appears.  The key isn’t whether or not a test line shows up, but how dark it is in relation to other times you test and in relation to the control line.  The darker the test line and the more closely it matches the control line, the more likely the LH surge is underway and your opk is positive.

It will be through a bit of trial and error that you come to understand when the test line is “dark enough” to signify the lh surge and a positive ovulation test. In fact the first month you use an ovulation predictor kit may be more educational then useful for conceiving, unless of course you get pregnant! After you’ve gone through a cycle of ovulation, you can compare the opk test strips and probably identify when you ovulated.

As soon as you notice the test line beginning to darken, it is time to have intercourse.  Even if ovulation is still a few days away, your best chance at getting pregnant is to have as many sperm as possible waiting for the egg when it emerges. Have sex every day or every other day as soon as you think the opk ovulation test is moving towards a positive result.  Even if the line darkens more over the next few days, you can be assured you haven’t wasted your efforts!  The more baby making in the days leading up to ovulation, the better.

Positive OPK

After you have seen a dark, definitely positive opk, you will notice that the test line begins to lighten as the days progress.  At this point, ovulation has passed and your fertile window for the month has closed.  You should continue to have intercourse for a day or so after ovulation, just to be sure.

It is possible to get a nearly positive opk ovulation test and not ovulate.  Sometimes luteinizing hormone will begin to build (darkening the test line on your opk strips) but then something (stress, illness, etc) may delay your ovulation.  In most cases, LH will again build and eventually surge, but it is also not unusual to have some months when ovulation doesn’t happen at all.

If you have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) you might also have trouble reading opk ovulation tests because luteinizing hormone levels stay consistently high throughout your cycle.  If this is the case, the test line always appears fairly dark and looks confusingly like a positive opk or darkens and lightens every few days.   You may still be ovulating, but it can be unpredictable and hard to detect the LH surge with ovulation predictor kits.

                          

Your cervix, located in deepest part of your vagina, is the entrance to your uterus. Your cervix position changes during your menstrual cycle and can give you clues about when you are most fertile.  It may take some practice, but make a habit of regularly checking your cervical position and you’ll become familiar with how your cervix feels at each stage of your fertility cycle.

How to Check Your Cervix Position

Before you begin, thoroughly wash your hands to remove bacteria and prevent infection. Next, insert a clean finger into your vagina, reaching until you feel your cervix. If you have trouble reaching, try sitting on the toilet, squatting slightly, or raising one leg on the edge of the bathtub.

Your cervix may feel firm and round like the tip of your nose, or it may feel softer with less defined boundaries, like pressing into the tip of your relaxed tongue. You may also feel a small dent or hole in the middle which is the opening of your cervix and the passage into your uterus. This is called the cervical os.

Cervix Position Before Ovulation

During your period, your cervix position is low, soft, and the cervical os is slightly open to allow the endometrium (period blood) to shed. As your period ends, your cervix remains low but becomes firm, closed, and dry. If you find any cervical mucus, it with be scant, sticky, and white.

Cervix Position During Ovulation

Midway through your cycle, as ovulation day draws near, you may find it harder to reach your cervix as it’s position becomes higher and deeper in your vagina. It will begin to feel softer and “mushy”, with more give and a less defined shape, and the cervical os will begin to open.

You will probably notice cervical mucus covering your cervix or coming from the os. When you are about to ovulate, fertile cervical mucus will be copious, mostly clear, thin and watery, and very stretchy. This is your most fertile time and when you are most likely to conceive a baby!

Cervix Position After Ovulation

After you ovulate and are no longer fertile, your cervix position will change again, dropping lower into your vaginal canal. The cervical os will close. Your cervix will feel firm again, like the tip of your nose, and there will be little or no cervical mucus. This is the position your cervix will remain in until your period starts.

Cervix Position in Early Pregnancy

You may wonder if you can detect early pregnancy by cervix position. In a word (or two), not really. Your cervix position will change during pregnancy, becoming higher and softer, but the timing of the position change is unpredictable.

For some women the cervix shifts to a pregnancy position right around when her period is due. But for others, it may not change position until several weeks after the pregnancy has been well established and likely already detected by urine or blood pregnancy test.

What is the LH surge? How does Luteinizing Hormone help me conceive a baby?

Answer:

The LH surge refers to rapidly increasing levels of Luteinizing Hormone in your body in the 24 to 48 hours before you ovulate. LH originates from your pituitary gland and is signaled to surge when the egg cell matures and is ready to be released for fertilization.

You are most fertile and likely to conceive when the LH surges and ovulation is imminent. Identify the LH surge and have intercourse daily during this very fertile window.

After the surge of LH triggers ovulation, it then initiates the conversion of the burst follicle (the chamber the egg matured and emerged from) into the corpus luteum.

The corpus luteum produces progesterone that prepares and thickens the lining of your uterus for possible implantation of an embryo. LH continues to support luteal function for the two weeks following ovulation. If there is a successful implantation, the hCG hormone (produced by the growing embryo) takes over the job of the luteinizing hormone.

The LH surge is what ovulation predictor kits measure for in your urine to determine whether or not ovulation is near. By testing your urine in the week leading up to ovulation, you can detect the LH surge and time intercourse appropriately.

The simplest ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) use inexpensive ovulation test strips which are dipped in collected urine or held under your urine stream daily. By observing the darkening lines, you can tell whether your LH levels have risen and if the LH surge has begun.

More advanced digital ovulation predictors automatically measure the LH levels for you and don’t require you to interpret the test results.

Measuring LH levels can be confusing if you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Women with PCOS often have consistently elevated levels of luteinizing hormone. Your reproductive cycle relies on changing hormone levels and if hormones levels stay consistently high, the cycle will stop. When your luteinizing hormone level never dips, the LH surge will not be triggered and ovulation isn’t likely to occur.

Reproductive hormone levels can also be too low to trigger the LH surge. Women with eating disorders or female athletes with very low body fat may have hormone deficiencies. In this case, the monthly period may stop completely (amenorrhea) and ovulation and pregnancy are very unlikely.

If you have been measuring your LH levels with an ovulation predictor kit for several months and are confused by the results, suspect your LH surge is not occurring, or are worried you may have LH levels that are too high or too low, see your healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment.

                          

Even though you can have sex anytime, there are only a few days each month you are able to conceive. In fact, the time frame for conception may be measured in mere hours, rather then days. Timing sex for when you are most fertile is crucial for getting pregnant as quickly as possible.

You are most fertile when you have just ovulated.  Each month (if you are ovulating regularly), one mature egg bursts from your ovary into your fallopian tube, where it awaits sperm for approximately 12 to 24 hours.  If no sperm are present or arrive to fertilize the egg, it passes though your system unfertilized, and a few weeks later your period starts.

To take advantage of the few hours when you are most fertile, the egg should be released to sperm already waiting in your fallopian tube.  This means you should have sex to get pregnant before you ovulate, even though you aren’t technically able to conceive until after you ovulate.

Sperm can live inside of you for 3 to 5 days in ideal conditions.  Fortunately, conditions are nearly perfect for sperm survival when you are most fertile.  Your body produces cervical mucus which protects the sperm from your immune system’s natural inclination to remove “foreign invaders” by flushing them out or killing them off with acidic secretions. One way to recognize when you are most fertile is to track the arrival of this sperm-friendly cervical mucus.  It tends to show up a few days before you ovulate and becomes most abundant at the peak of your fertility.  So when you notice fertile cervical mucus, it’s time for baby making sex!

Use Ovulation Predictor Kits to Know When You Are Most Fertile
Another way to be sure you’re having intercourse when you are most fertile is by using ovulation predictor kits (opks) or ovulation predictor strips. Right before your ovary releases an egg, the level of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) surges in your body. The presence of LH hormone can be detected in your urine. Ovulation predictor kits or strips are available for you to use at home to test yourself for the presence of the hormone. When you get a positive test, you know LH is surging, ovulation is near, and you are entering your most fertile time of the month.

Don’t assume that you are most fertile in the middle of your menstrual cycle.
You’ve probably heard stories of women who got pregnant during their period or some other odd time of the month.  This is because ovulation can be unpredictable. On average (if you have a typical 28 day cycle), you are most fertile 14 days after your period starts. However, many women don’t fit the norms and may ovulate 8 days after their period starts or 20 days into their cycle.  Your ovulation day can also vary from month to month, depending on your health, stress, or activity levels. The only way to know for sure when you are most fertile is to track your signs of fertility every month and use ovulation predictors.

Ovulation and Cervical Mucus

When ovulating, your cervical mucus can give you important clues about when you are most fertile. Cervical mucus (often abbreviated CM) is your body’s natural way to make your vagina and uterus sperm-friendly, guiding and protecting the sperm on their way to your fallopian tubes and waiting egg.

Cervical secretions change throughout your cycle. When you are not close to ovulation, mucus is usually absent. You may first notice wetness in your vagina a few days after your period ends as your body prepares for ovulation. The best way to monitor your cervical mucus is by checking daily and keeping track of the results in a preconception journal. You will start to notice patterns that will help you predict ovulation and choose the best times to have sex to conceive. If you are worried your body doesn’t produce enough CM, there may be ways to naturally increase your cervical mucus.

To check your cervical mucus, insert a clean finger into your vagina and sweep the area getting as close to your cervix as possible. Your cervix changes position throughout your cycle, so sometimes it will be lower and easy to reach and other times it may be too high. Don’t worry if you can’t reach it, just go as deep as comfortable, taking care not to scratch yourself. You may be better able to reach your cervix if you are sitting on a toilet, in a squatting position, or with one leg propped on the toilet seat or edge of the bathtub. When you remove your finger, rub the secretions between your thumb and forefinger and notice the color, consistency, and stretch.

Cervical Mucus After Your Period

Immediately following your period, you may not notice any mucus at all, or it may be scant and sticky. It is usually colorless and difficult to find at this time. Your vagina will generally feel dry both internally and to the touch. You are not fertile during this period.

Cervical Mucus Approaching Ovulation

As you get closer to ovulation, your cervical mucus will become thicker, white or yellowish, and creamy. When you rub it between your finger and thumb, it has a similar texture and appearance to hand lotion. It will separate easily when you move your fingers apart. You are probably not very fertile during this period, however sperm can live inside of you for 3 to 5 days, so there is a small chance you could get pregnant from sex you have during this time period, even if ovulation is still days away.

Secretions should not have a foul odor or be accompanied by itching or pain. This discharge, similar in color and texture and often mistaken for cervical mucus, may indicate a vaginal infection which is very common and easily treatable by your doctor.

Cervical Mucus During Ovulation

As you approach your most fertile period, your cervical mucus will become abundant. Your vagina feels very moist and secretions may be present on your underwear or on the toilet paper when you wipe. Your cervical mucus will be much thinner, more watery, slippery, clear to slightly cloudy, and very stretchy. It will resemble raw (uncooked) egg whites and is often called “Egg White Cervical Mucus” or abbreviated EWCM. It will stretch between your thumb and forefinger for several inches before breaking.

Now is you best chance for pregnancy! Have sex every day when you notice egg white cervical mucus to increase your chances of conceiving.

It is easy to confuse the “day after” secretion of semen from your vagina with egg white cervical mucus. The texture and consistency are very similar. It may take a little practice to tell the two apart, but if you notice what looks like EWCM at a time in your cycle when you don’t expect it, this may be the explanation.

Cervical Mucus After Ovulation

After you ovulate, your cervical secretions will once again become thicker, cloudy, and sticky. They may dry up completely before your period starts. Your vagina will return to feeling dry and you probably won’t notice much discharge when you wipe. You are not very likely to get pregnant after ovulation has occurred.

                          

If you’ve been taking oral contraceptives, you probably have questions about getting pregnant after the pill. How soon can you get pregnant after the pill? Is it hard to get pregnant after birth control? You took the pill for a long time, will this affect your fertility? Should you wait a few cycles after stopping the pill to try to conceive?

How the Birth Control Pill Works

The birth control pill works by suppressing ovulation. Oral contraceptives are typically formulated with a combination of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. When you take the pill, your body’s natural hormone regulation system is overridden. Instead of responding to changing hormone levels and cycling through menstruation and ovulation, your body is tricked by the constant elevated levels of hormones delivered by the pill. Your ovaries don’t receive the signal to begin maturing follicles, never release eggs to be fertilized, thus preventing pregnancy.

When You Stop Taking The Pill

When you stop taking the pill, the extra estrogen and progesterone will leave your body very quickly, usually within a few days. At this point, your body will begin to respond to it’s natural hormone levels and begin the menstrual cycle again. This may mean you start your period immediately after stopping the pill. However, it may take your body a few extra days or even weeks to regulate. During this time you may notice some irregular bleeding that doesn’t seem like a normal period. This is not unusual and does not indicate a problem. It can take 3 to 6 months for your body to naturally and consistently regulate your fertility cycle after coming off of the birth control pill.

If you had regular, predictable menstrual cycles before you started taking the birth control pill, it’s very likely that after a short time of adjustment you will again have regular cycles of ovulation and menstruation. It doesn’t matter if you were on the pill for six months or sixteen years, the length of time you took the birth control pill will have no effect on your fertility.

It’s important to note, however, that if you started taking the pill at 22 and you’re now 42, your fertility may indeed be reduced significantly, but not because of 20 years of oral contraceptive use. You may be less fertile simply because you have aged.

• At age 30, 75% will get pregnant within one year, and 91% within four years.

• At age 35, 66% will get pregnant within one year, and 84% within four years.

• At age 40, 44% will get pregnant within one year, and 64% within four years  (source : Wikipedia)

If you had irregular cycles before taking the birth control pill, you will probably once again be irregular after you stop taking the pill. Oral contraceptives don’t usually “fix” the underlying issues that made your cycles unpredictable to begin with. If you stop taking the pill and don’t return to regular menstrual cycles within three to six months, it’s time to consult your doctor.

How Long To Get Pregnant After the Pill

You can start trying to get pregnant as soon as you stop taking the birth control pill. There is no evidence to suggest that you need to wait to conceive. However, you may decide to wait a few cycles for your body to regulate so that you have a better idea of when you are ovulating. It can be a “shot in the dark” (no pun intended) at getting pregnant if you don’t know when you are most fertile. You may not ovulate for a few weeks after stopping the birth control pill, even if you experienced menstrual-like bleeding (which is very common after stopping the pill). Trying to conceive can be physically and emotionally draining, and it may be best to save the effort for the weeks you know you can get pregnant.

It’s hard to guess exactly how long it will take to get pregnant after the pill. Some women’s bodies regulate very quickly and they ovulate and get pregnant literally within days of stopping the pill. For others, it may take significantly longer. Remember that your chances of getting pregnant in any given cycle depend on many factors including your age, health and weight, how well you are timing sex to conceive, and whether you are ovulating regularly.

What are Your Chances of Getting Pregnant

If you are young, healthy, and actively trying to conceive, it will take an average of four to five months to get pregnant.

Between the ages of 35 and 40, your chances of getting pregnant in any given cycle are one in six or seven. It takes an average of seven months to conceive for this age group.

For women over 40, the chance of conception drops to one in twenty for each cycle, or an average wait of 20 months to conceive. Although that statistic may be disheartening, realize that everyone is different and your results may vary. If you are over 40, it’s imperative that you see your doctor to insure that no time is wasted and potential fertility issues can be recognized and treated as quickly as possible.

Sexual Positions to Conceive a Baby Girl

Sex positions that result in shallow penetration will increase your chances of conceiving a girl. The entrance to your vagina is more acidic (has a lower pH value) while the deeper areas are more alkaline.  If your partner ejaculates into the more acidic area of your vagina, a greater number of X sperm will survive the journey to your egg. The traditional “missionary position” with the man on top of the woman allows for shallow penetration. Avoid pulling your knees towards your chest, as this will encourage deeper penetration.

Lying sideways with the man behind the woman in a “spooning” position is another good position to conceive a girl. Woman on top can also allow for shallow penetration since the woman can control how far she allows his penis to enter her. Regardless of which position you choose, be sure that at the moment of his orgasm, your partner’s penis is positioned shallowly and away from your cervix.

To get Pregnant with a Girl, Avoid Your Orgasm

Sadly for you, your arousal and orgasm will favor conceiving a baby boy! When you are sexually aroused and orgasm, your body releases additional cervical mucus and vaginal secretions which makes your vagina more alkaline and favorable for Y sperm. In addition, the vaginal contractions that accompany your orgasm will speed the semen up your cervix and uterus.  Y sperm will win in competitions of speed, so to get pregnant with a girl, we have to slow down the pace to give the X sperm a chance.

Have Sex Well Before You Ovulate

Sperm, in general, can remain viable and fertilize your egg  five days (or more!) after your last sexual encounter.  Fortunately for those trying to conceive a girl, the Y sperm will die off more quickly then the X sperm thus giving the advantage to Team Pink. Have sex daily starting four to five days before you expect to ovulate and stop having sex two days before ovulation. This will stack the deck in favor of the X sperm. If you wish to continue having recreational sex nearer to ovulation, use a barrier method of birth control (i.e. a condom) to prevent the infusion of fresh Y sperm, or choose non penetrative sex. To best pinpoint ovulation, learn to record and recognize your  fertility signs and consider using an ovulation predictor kit.

Avoid Using Lubricants

Typical over the counter vaginal lubricants like K-Y or Astroglide should not be used at all when trying to conceive. They will make your vagina too acidic, even for X sperm. Preseed is a lubricant specially formulated to optimize pH for sperm and is safe to use while you are trying to get pregnant. However, Preseed is so sperm-friendly, that it may actually favor the Y sperm. It’s best to avoid lubricants altogether  if you are trying to get pregnant with a girl.

Calcium and Magnesium May Help You Conceive a Girl

A diet high in calcium and magnesium (and low in sodium and potassium) may help you to conceive a girl.  Milk, Greek-style yogurt, cottage cheese strawberries, raspberries, eggs, calcium fortified pasta, low sodium fish, white rice, and chicken breasts are good foods to eat in order to  increase  your calcium and magnesium intake. You can also take calcium and magnesium supplements, but never take supplements in excess of the recommended daily allowance without speaking to your doctor.

When your partner ejaculates, be sure he is thrust in as deep as possible, and then have him stop thrusting to allow the semen to be deposited as close to your cervix as possible. Probably not as much fun as recreational sex,  but this is a great way to get pregnant with a boy!

Only Use Sperm-Friendly Lubricants

Most personal lubricants on the market are not sperm friendly, particularly because they make your vagina more acidic. Y sperm are extra sensitive to acidic conditions and we don’t want to give the X sperm any advantage by killing off the population of Y sperm.  Don’t use personal lubricants when you are trying to conceive a baby boy unless they are specially formulated to be safe for use while trying to conceive.

One popular brand of sperm-safe lubricant that you may have heard about is PreSeed.  If you use extra lubrication while trying to conceive a son, PreSeed is your best option.

If you don’t produce enough cervical mucus naturally, PreSeed may help you conceive a baby boy by making your vagina more alkaline and helping to move the sperm quickly though the cervix and towards your egg.  Anything that can get the speedy Y sperm to the egg more quickly may increase the odds that you will conceive a baby boy.

Enjoy Yourself

Whatever sex position you choose to conceive a baby boy, make sure it’s really good sex!  Unlike chemical lubricants, the natural lubricants that your body makes when you are sexually aroused are terrific for Y sperm!  If your vagina becomes very wet during sex with your natural cervical mucus, the pH will become even more alkaline and Y sperm friendly.

Also, cervical mucus acts as a “sperm super highway”, protecting and directing sperm to your egg.  Remember that Y sperm are faster then X sperm, so anything that can make the journey faster will improve your chances of conceiving a baby boy.

Not too Early, Not too Late  

Have all this great, deep penetrating sex as close to your ovulation day as possible.  Y sperm are fast, but they don’t stay active and healthy as long as X sperm.  If you have sex a few days before you ovulate and then stop, it’s likely that many of the Y sperm will have become inactive leaving only X sperm to fertilize your egg when it emerges. To increase your chances of conceiving a baby boy, have sex only on the day you are ovulating and on the two to three  days following ovulation.  Use ovulation predictor kits  or simple ovulation predictor strips (very inexpensive at BabyHopes.com) to accurately predict your ovulation day.

If you want to have sex on the days before you ovulate, use a barrier method of birth control (i.e., condoms without spermicide) or choose non-penetrative sex.
