Conches <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p><strong>(Social) Value: Love<br> <em>"Money can't buy me love" is both cheesy and true</em></strong></p> <p>The reason why money can't buy love is because, ultimately, love is the value that money represents. Money is a proxy for value and value is that which holds us together and makes us relevant, love. This feels cheesy or even embarrassing because we have broken our social contract with value. Specifically, we have inappropriately imbued money with a value of its own, disassociating money from its role as an intermediary, as a temporary representation of value in a chain of transactions. Money has become the object as opposed to the expedient. It is my thesis that value creation must be the frame within which wealth creation fits; that our humanity can no longer be subjugated to our economy due to a false primacy of our intermediary for value, cash. I hope to write a post about my opinion on this topic later.  However, I am quite smitten with this dialog. Nope. I definitely err on the side of transparency. However, juxtaposing transparency (in quotation marks) with sorrow and pain does not neuter transparency. With transparency we would not be at war with Iraq. With transparency our economy would not have been buoyed by imaginary value. I almost never lie. It is a central tenant of my life. It is often awkward, difficult, painful and to the extent that sorrow is involved, it is not the disclosure of information that is to be blamed. It is the world and its actors that cause sorrow. In those exceptional moments when we decide that withholding information is equal to protecting those that do not know, in those situations it is likely that we can trace time back to moments where greater transparency was clearly warranted. Shielding others from information is a statement of power and privilege. Conches <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>I used to be a high school teacher.  Nine years in the classroom and in the front office working with disenfranchised youth. There was only one thing nearly universally abhorred by every young person I have ever met, censorship. I spent a lot of my time as an educator making the case for nuance, that there are occasions where censoring or withholding information is necessary.  </p><p>In the way of the world, I have come full circle. I am a nearly unyielding advocate for radical transparency. With radical transparency we would not be at war in Iraq.  With radical transparency our economy would not have been floated by imaginary value where investment is more like gambling.  </p><p>In 2005 Harold Pinter was given the Nobel Prize for Literature. He just died on Christmas eve, 2008. There are two quotations from that speech that add the nuance that is necessary to this discussion.</p><div style="margin-left: 40px;"><font face="Verdana" size="-1">'There are no hard distinctions between what is real and what is unreal, nor between what is true and what is false. A thing is not necessarily either true or false; it can be both true and false.'</font><br></div><p>A misunderstanding that I struggle to overcome is that transparency does not equal truth telling. The assumption that I, or anyone, hold the truth and the hubris to assume that I can calculate with any certainty the conditions under which that truth is to be withheld is absurd.  As Pinter says above, there is no truth, no reality.  I believe the best we can do is to aggregate our collective experience and understanding.  Only with radical transparency can this aggregation divine what may be real or true.</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><font face="Verdana" size="-1">I believe that despite the enormous odds which exist, unflinching, unswerving, fierce intellectual determination, as citizens, to define the<em> real</em> truth of our lives and our societies is a crucial obligation which devolves upon us all. Create incentives that give voice to perspectives we're not currently hearing in the mainstream media. </p> </dd></dl><p>My comment is attached here (and on change.org), please <a href="http://www.change.org/ideas/view/limit_media_consolidation">go over to the change.org idea</a> to post yours</p> <p>I am of two minds on this:</p><p>1) Government control/regulation of our media has be explicitly designed to encourage consolidation.  The reason why we have to situation we do is because the FCC the Chamber of Commerce and others have created it to be so.  The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Telecommunications_Act">1996 Telecommunications act</a> was the catalyst for much of this consolidation.  There is no valid argument that this is good for America.  However, it is good for the few Big Media corps that run the show.</p><p>2) The other part of this issues revolves around <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_neutrality">Network Neutrality</a>.  The media landscape is shifting and the "Internet" (in quotes because it is not the Internet as we know it from YouTube or from our home/office computers) will play a growing role in providing media content.  Big Media is taking the position of an industry that has been disrupted.  They are working tirelessly to beat back the disruption.  They are merging with or buying content owners (Disney, Sony, etc) but they are also buying/merging/aligning communications companies so that Big Media is becoming synonymous with Big Telecommunications.  Already <a href="http://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/packets001645.shtml">Internet provided by cable companies is considered an "information service" as opposed to a "Telecommunications Service"</a> which means that before the law, the cable companies own not just the pipes the the information flows through but they also own the information.  Network Neutrality legislation would correct this.  While <a href="http://obama.senate.gov/podcast/060608-network_neutral/">Obama is a staunch Network Neutrality</a> advocate and <a href="http://gigaom.com/2008/11/18/obamas-fcc-transition-team-co-chair-a-wow-player/">is constructing an FCC that would favor Net Neutrality</a>, he also <a href="http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0608/11349.html">signed off on the wire tapping provisions and the Telco immunity provisions of the Bush Administrations FISA act</a>.  The assumption is that he did this because he needs the telcos for "security" purposes and he needs them to respond when he asks to listen in to our conversations.  My assumptions are that Obama will abide by the law requiring congressional oversight of wiretapping but I am troubled by the relationship.</p><p>The tie between FISA wire tapping and Network Neutrality centers around the peer to peer Internet and user generated content.  User generated content has been much derided since it's inception in the late 90's when websites began to make the type of thing we are doing here possible.  However, now that the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Tail">Long Tail</a> business model is king (where an entity can sustainably leverage the Internet to deliver both a very popular and a highly niche piece of content), user generated content has a marketplace; however, Network Neutrality laws are critical to the delivery of niche content. Without Network Neutrality laws it would be perfectly legal for Comcast, at the backbone of the Internet, to favor say Forbes Magazine content over Change.org content causing one set of information to flow more readily than another.  Additionally, the Internet is increasingly moving in to our cell phones and cars and refrigerators.  User generated content will have increasing relevance for disaster relief and response, for disease detection and epidemiology.  The what if for the future is... What if our media/communications infrastructure was designed, explicitly, to support an informed citizenry in every aspect of our lives.</p><p>As I have been following these issues I have done some research in to the concept of an Informed Citizenry (no Wikipedia entry).  I was surprised<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=D2Ew8TbLAKkC&amp;dq=the+strength+of+a+people+the+idea+of+an+informed+citizenry+in+america&amp;pg=PP1&amp;ots=OgxhztFcKQ&amp;sig=6KI-4rS6dNwblAfUk-6CfcXn7f4&amp;hl=en&amp;prev=http://www.google.com/search?q=The+Strength+of+a+People:+The+Idea+of+an+Informed+Citizenry+in+America&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=print&amp;ct=title&amp;cad=one-book-with-thumbnail"> to find</a> that there is no legal precedent that built in the idea of an informed citizenry.  It was an idea that informed the foundation of the US but it did not make it in to the Constitution. I am convinced that this must be the guiding principle of media reform.</p><p>One of the primary retorts from Big Media/Telcos is that there is only so much bandwidth.  The reality is, there is only so much bandwidth that they can control.  The Internet is needlessly built on a freeway metaphor where all content goes through a massive "backbone".  The result of this decision is that we have a needlessly centralized infrastructure serving a massively decentralized information network. Check it out here."<br></div><p style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">While this is probably inevitable at some level, It would be really unfortunate and, I think, it misses the value of Twitter all together.  I have been writing about how I think Web 3.0 should be defined, characterizing web3 as uniquely user centric. Conches <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>In my last post I blathered on about what I thought should characterize Web 3.0.  This time I want to quickly look at a handful of sites that I think are great examples of what the web should be.</p><div><h3>PAAS</h3>Providing a "roll your own" web platform is defintely a hallmark of the user centric web.  Some notables here are Amazon (S3, EC2, etc), Google Apps, Salesforce.com, etc.  These platforms for solutions.  They require an "initiative" with something resembling a business model.  These platforms can be molded to create interactive environments for other users to interact with.  These new tools are definitely a democratizing force in web development analogous to what the handheld video camera and iMovie did for video production.</div><div><h3>The User Centric Web</h3></div><div>Web 2.0 focuses on interactivity it tended to be about creating environments for Ttribes or consumption cults.  Web 2.0 is primarily a way for consumers to design their consumption.  The next iteration of the web will do better than Crowd Sourcing, it will facilitate individuals in creating value and it will provide tools for that value to be discovered.  Some great examples are:</div> <div><a href="http://www.ushahidi.com">Ushahidi.com</a><div style="margin-left: 40px;">"Ushahidi, which means ''testimony'' in Swahili, is a website that was developed to map reports of violence in Kenya after the post-election fallout at the beginning of 2008. Ushahidi's roots are in the collaboration of Kenyan citizen journalists during a time of crisis. </div> <p style="margin-left: 40px;">The new Ushahidi Engine is being created to use the lessons learned from Kenya to create a platform that allows anyone around the world to set up their own way to gather reports by mobile phone, email and the web - and map them. It is being built so that it can grow with the changing environment of the web, and to work with other websites and online tools. </p> <p style="margin-left: 40px;">Our goal is to create a platform that any person or organization can use to set up their own way to collect and visualize information. The core platform will allow for plug-in and extensions so that it can be customized for different locales and needs. This tool will be tested and made available as an open source application that others can download, implement and use to bring awareness to crises in their own region. Organizations can also use the tool for internal monitoring purposes" - <a href="http://www.ushahidi.com/about">http://www.ushahidi.com/about</a></p><p>Ushahidi.com is a service that aggregates information about crises.  The information is sourced from the crises itself via SMS or other technologies that are already there and do not need to be deployed.</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><a href="http://www.last.fm">Last.fm</a><br>Last.fm is a social networking site.  However, it's not a broad platform like Facebook.  Last.fm is focused, exclusively, on music.  It's primary innovation is Scrobbling which is a way for anyone to record the songs they listen to reguardless of how they listen to it (as long as they are listening over the internet).  They then use that information as a sort of recommendation engine.  I can listen to a "radio" station that is made up if my "loved" tracks or I can listen to music from my "neighborhood" which is music that is loved by the people who love music that I love.  The nice thing about how this works is that no one person listen to the same music that I do.  Our similarities are just a door in.  It works great for just listening to stuff I like (my loved tracks) or looking for something new, my neighborhood.</p> <div style="margin-left: 40px;"><a href="http://www.ancestry.com">Ancestry.com</a><br> Ancestry is similar to Last.fm in that it is not really about the people who provide much of the data on the site, but instead, it's about the data.  When I enter an ancester in to my family tree, the service looks for that person in other trees and then tells me about it.  I can vet that information and add it to my tree if it makes sense.<br> </div> <h3>Aggregation</h3> <div style="margin-left: 40px;"><a href="http://weefeelfine.org">WeFeelFine.org</a><br> WeeFeelFine.org scapes the blogosphere look for instance of the phrase "I feel..." Conches <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Here is how <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_3.0" title="Wikipedia definition of Web 3.0">Wikipedia defines it:</a></p> <blockquote> <p>Web 3.0, a phrase coined by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Markoff" title="John Markoff">John Markoff</a> of the New York Times in 2006, refers to a supposed third generation of Internet-based services that collectively comprise what might be called 'the intelligent Web'—such as those using semantic web, microformats, natural language search, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_mining" title="Data mining">data mining</a>, machine learning, recommendation agents, and artificial intelligence technologies—which emphasize machine-facilitated understanding of information in order to provide a more productive and intuitive user experience.</p> <p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nova_Spivack" title="Nova Spivack">Nova Spivack</a> defines Web 3.0 as the third decade of the Web (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010s" title="2010s">2010–2020</a>) during which he suggests several major complementary technology trends will reach new levels of maturity simultaneously including:<span style="font-weight: bold;">...</span></p> </blockquote> <p><br>This stuff makes great sense and it is a logical extension of web 2.0; actually, I would suggest that it IS web 2.0.  We will see the rise the semantic web and various sense making tools will emerge to help us filter and discover.  However, what I see in the definitions above is really, really, really interactive television where the USER has great control of the information that they can digest.  What is massively wrong about this definition is that it's nothing new.  It's a feature set.  </p><p>It is unreasonable to version the Internet in terms of features.  If features were the only variable then we are surely well past web 3.0.  So what do I think web 3.0 is...</p> <p>The defining characteristic of Web 3.0 will be a blurring of the lines between the USER and the PUBLISHER.  I remember back when the web first getting pictures in the early 90's.  There was a big push to get folks to understand HTML.  I was caught up in the idea that anyone could have an opinion that everyone could see.  In the subsequent years I have been disabused of my utopic ideals of wildfire democracy spreading via the Internet.  It is, of course, far more difficult than that.</p><p>The reason why we need new filtering and discovering tools as defined in the Web 3.0 definition above is because of the amount of information, including the bit(s) I am generating now, that are being generated.  Some garbage, maybe most, and some valuable.  There is a fantastic short story by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Luis_Borges">Jorge Luis Borges</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Library_of_Babel">The Library of Babel</a>, (<a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=the+library+of+babel&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;client=firefox-a">google </a>for full text) that describes a not quite infinite but perfectly complete library where every possible book has been written, where exists every lie, every truth, every insight and every propaganda.  This is how I see the Internet, as the nascent Library of Babel.  But I am less interested in the tools that can help us understand the content than I am in the process of completing the library.  I am far more interested in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_monkey_theorem">monkeys at keyboards</a> than I am in the latest marketing or fundraising tool.</p><p>Maybe it is just a matter of switching our point of view.  Web 3.0 will only be substantively different, deserving of a new version, <strong>IF</strong> it can turn the whole thing on its head.  Web 3.0 will be defined by its ability to be focused on value and not vapor and value can only be discerned by asking the question, is it valuable?  This is, of course, non-trivial. Google page rank is the classic example of how value on the internet can be discerned.
