AQUA IDOL…
…as it turns out, I was a Judge for Aqua Idol for the Trophia Butterfly Foundation!  I will tell you that tonight’s contestants were some of the very best that Aqua Idol EVER had at any time for any Cause!   Let us hear it for Sam Trophia who wowed everyone with his rendition of This Is the Moment and My Way, as if he has been singing all his life…..and how cool was Keith Dempster, who was like a pro…and was he really inhaling that ciggie?  Loved Laurie and Chris and Tim and Rick and eveyone who competed tonight!  You were all amazing!!!!!  What a fun night at Aqua Lounge!  LOTS of money was raised for the Trophia Butterfly Foundation!
 
AT LAST LIGHT…on Friday, March 12th
This is the title of a new play written by Kathy Cafferty of the People’s Theater Wordcraft Workshop, which was held every Sunday all last year. 
It is a full length production, directed by Christopher Tittel, founder of People’s Theater.  It will be held on Fri. March 12th, at 8:00 PM, at Tennessee Williams FAC, on Stock Island.  Tix can be bought at www.keystix.com.  This exciting show stars the wonderful Connie Gilbert, along with Larry Harcar, Connie Hurst, Colleeen Mahoney, Rachel Wilcox, Cat Brown, Jack Reid, Suellen Schwobel, Melody Moore, and Kathy Preziosi.  It concerns a character at different stages of her life, who, as a very old woman, returns to her tiny NH town to resolve and confront a secret that has always tormented her.  Mark this on your calendar!

This exciting Dance Co. Dear Readers,
We got back from our visit in Ohio, very late last night….as you may have noticed, I sent out Sunday’s List about 3 AM!  I hope I didn’t make too many errors!  Our daily visits with my Mom went well, and she loved having us there.  It is so hard to leave when she is begging us to please stay…..there were a lot of tears shed, to say the least.  Mom’s world has definitely diminished since we even last saw her in Dec.  She seems to be just going through the paces of living….Get up, dress, go to her meals, to bed at 7 PM.  It is difficult to observe, especially Mom always said there were never enough hours in the day to do all the things she enjoyed doing…and she was a DOER! Occasionally there is a glimmer of her old animated self, and that encourages us.  Please, keep her in your thoughts and prayers.  Even the way she is, is better than not having her at all!  Thanks.  And now, it’s time for…

Hey there – Can’t tell you how excited we are to be working with ConchTV.com which is now the official internet TV site for The Buzzz in the Keys.

We recently teamed up with Gail and Craig Hollenback at ConchTV.com, as well as with Guy DeBoer at KONK 1500 AM, to create a whole new radio/video show that you can listen to every Tuesday from 1–2 p.m. on KONK 1500 AM and watch, any day, any time, on demand at ConchTV.com.

The Buzzz in the Keys debuts on KONK 1500 AM on Tuesday, March 16. Look for it on ConchTV.com on or around April 1. The great thing about this new alliance with KONK 1500 AM and ConchTV.com is that the Buzzz will now be part of true community radio and also available for everyone to watch even if you don’t have cable and you’re not in the Keys. Seeming to sense my indifference, the wiry Oscar Meyer wiener leaps into Rhonda’s arms and starts licking her face with purpose.

MEET SPIKE

Ok, so there we are in the Mazda Dealership in Ft. Lauderdale hanging out by the Latte machine while the eager beaver sales kid, who looks like he’s only about twelve, brings around our test drive.

There’s this older lady sitting at one of the cafe tables in the lounge holding a funny looking little dog who can’t seem to stop wagging his way-too-long tail. Can’t quite figure out what he is – kinda looks like the mutt from the Grinch movie, only with really short legs, a hot dog torso and spiked up hair that looks like Rhonda’s.
“Look at this cute little dog,” squeals Rhonda who is certain that the wiggling pup is her dog Avatar.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” I reply, keeping my eyes peeled for the wayward sales kid.
“I’ve been fostering him for a few months now,” the latte sipping lady smiles. I love him to death but I already have a dog and my condo won’t let me have another one.”

“Look Pam, he’s just precious!” Rhonda coos in between laps.

I politely pat the pup’s head. “Yes, he is very cute but we’re not in the market for a dog. Came here for a car.”

I turn back to the showroom thinking, “OK, junior, where are you with that CX7 we are supposed to be test driving right now?”

“My friend found the little fella abandoned in a gutter by the side of the road about five months ago and I’ve been taking care of him ever since,” the woman continues. “So many people have wanted to adopt him but I’m being very particular – want to make sure he goes to a good home.”

Rhonda puts the little dog down who immediately runs over to meand paws my leg. “Look, he wants you to pick him up!”

“Yes, yes, you are a good little boy,” I say lifting him up into my arms, “but we are not in a position to have a dog right now. Already haveenough stress.” Lick, lick, lick, lick.

The Tween finally returns with the keys to our test drive but not before the latte lady slips us her phone number. “If you know of a good home, please call me, “ she whispers, “But I do think you girls would make the perfect home for him….”

I stuff the piece of scrap paper into my pocket as we head out to the parking lot.

It’s late when we leave the dealership so we end up spending the night in Ft. Lauderdale. After going on and on about the little dog, Rhonda finally drops the subject. Trouble is, I can’t get the damn thing out of my mind. Instead of counting sheep, I fall asleep listing all the reasons why we should not have a dog right now. ZZZZZZZ.

Morning comes and Mr. Whiskers continues to haunt me. We load up the car and turn onto 95 South.

“Think we should call that lady and take another look at her dog?” I casually ask Rhonda.

“I thought you weren’t interested in a dog. You said you didn’t want any more stress.”

“Yeah, I know, but we could just look. No commitment.”

Rhonda coolly gazes out the passenger window. “You know what will happen if we go there”

Geez, I thought I was the one who needed all the convincing. Now the tables had unexpectedly turned.

I nudge Rhonda a little more. “Look, here’s her number.Her name is Joan. Why don’t you call her and see if we can swing by. It’s right on the way.”

A few miles later, we’re sitting by a lake in the woman’s backyard, playing with the frisky little dog and sipping on glasses of white wine.

“Oh, he really likes you girls,” Joan says as she continually refills our glasses. “Why don’t you try him out for two weeks. If it doesn’t work out, you can always bring him back. No strings.”

“You know what will happen if we take him home,” Rhonda says to me under her breath.

Mellowed by the Chardonnay, I reassure her. “Yeah, yeah, but we can always bring him back if it doesn’t work out.”

Next thing you know, we’re at PetSmart, picking out a new doggie bed, crate, leash, food, toys, etc., etc., etc.

We never did get a new car. But it’s been four weeks now and Spike is an official member of the family. He is probably the most loving, well behaved dog we have ever had. Rhonda somehow manages to style his wiry head locks to mimic her own. He is, after all, her dog Avatar.

For me, he is a saving grace.

PS  Our visit with Mom today was a good one.  It is hard to watch her try so hard to express herself, and I can see that she is frustrated.  Having us here has been great for her and us.  It will be awful to leave her and say goodby.  There is always that feeling that I may not see her again, or that the next time we do see her, even more of herself will be gone.  We shared some laughter today and that was good.  She is very well liked by everyone in the unit she is in.  She has learned to manipulate her wheelchair around quite well.  In a way I am glad that I am doing this daily Events List, as it is very therapeutic for me.  I cannot tell you how much your kind words and thoughts have meant to me.  You all touch my heart and give more meaning to our town’s One Human Family motto! 
In addition to my Mom’s problems, my beloved Aunt Lottie, my godmother, whose husband was my Mom’s brother, has had a terrible fall and is in the ICU at a hospital in Cleveland.  Do also keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.  Thanks a lot.  I tell you, Growing old is not for sissies!

PS  Thanks to each of you who are sending me messages of love and support while we are in Ohio visiting with my precious Mother, Adele Stevens.  My brothers, Ed and Fred and I have met and have made some very difficult and emotional decisions in regard to Mom and her care and what lies ahead.  She is definitely on a downswing in her life.  She is dealing with a severe blockage in a major artery, plus the results of a stroke, which have affected her speech and thought process.  For all of you who had the great joy of knowing her, there are still glimmers of the delightful lady who she is, and she can still charm everyone who comes in contact with her to an extent.  For me, it is hard to watch, as my Mom and I never had any difficulty ever talking about anything and everything.  At some point, something has happened to Mom which is taking its toll on her life, and this is painful for me to see.  I feel I am being prepared for something I may never be prepared for.  Please keep Mom in your thoughts and prayers….and pray for me, so that I will be able to accept all that lies ahead.  Thank you very much.

THE FULL MONTY

The Waterfront Playhouse has done it again! Director, Danny Weathers, has hit the ball out of the park with this hilarious, delightful, and wonderful new musical, THE FULL MONTY! It stars a cast of 20 super actors, including Michael McCabe, David Black, Traci Reynolds, Marc Crow, Mary Falconer, Eric Cole, Joe McMurray, Nulita Loder, Laurie Breakwell, and Kennedy Pugh! Each is perfectly cast!!! And…it is so great to welcome back to the Waterfront Stage, the always fabulous Robin Deck and Cannon Starnes, who starred in our first Naked Boys Singing, several years back! There were so many laughs, my face hurt! I must mention the marvelous production staff….along with the marvelous Mr. Weathers, they are, Michael Fauss, musical director, Penny Leto & Carolyn Cooper, choreographers, amazing set design by Michael Boyer, Leigh Hooten, costumes, Allen Gallant, sound, Carmen Rodriguez, costumes & props, and Kim Hanso, lighting. I want to congratulate the Waterfront recipient of the Florence Recher award this year, the very dear and dedicated, Bert Whitt, whose contributions to the Waterfront Playhouse are continuous, effective, and amazing! Bert was presented this award during Intermission last night. He is MOST deserving!
