Jennifer Saunders, the award winning comedienne and writer and star of TV hits French and Saunders and Absolutely Fabulous, has teamed up with Judy Craymer, producer of the spectacularly popular and smash hit theatre production Mamma Mia to bring what looks to be yet another incredible hit to the West End, Viva Forever! The show everyone has been waiting for, which has been endorsed by the Spice Girls, is a contemporary music based on the girl band’s values of friendship in the face of fortune and fame.

The show charts the journey of a girl as she follows her dream into the world of overnight celebrity through a TV reality singing competition. After a record breaking sell out tour, months in advance, at the Shakespeares Glove Theatre, Richard 3rd play is coming to the Apollo Theatre in November (previews from November 2nd 2012). It will be performed on alternate nights with Twelfth Night. Mark Rylance will play the lead role of the famous King. He has wowed audiences as Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron in Jerusalem and other credits include La Bete and Endgame. He has received many awards throughout his strong acting career, namely the Laurence Oliviers, BAFTAs and Tonys. He has also appeared in many productions at the Globe.

Richard, The Duke of Gloucester, is determined that he should be crowned King of England. He has already ‘got rid’ of one King and his son and all that now stands in his way are two brothers and two nephews – the Princes in the Tower. Woe betide anyone who dares to raise their voice to him. Richard is monstrous but charismatic reveling in every moment of his hypocritical and homicidal journey to absolute power.

Richard III is a Shakespearean account of Richard III of England. It outlines his rise to power and his reign on the throne. Although it was only a short reign, it is one of the longest plays that Shakespeare wrote and is one of his best known works. It was written in the last decade of the 16th century and is remembered as one of his earliest. “Now is the winter of our discontent” is the most famous opening line in any of Shakespeares plays.

Joining Mark Rylance in the cast is Samuel Barnett who starred in The History Boys and Johnny Flynn who has appeared in Twelfth Night and The Heretic. He also starred with Rylance in Jerusalem on its return from Broadway last year.

Returning to the West End stage, comedian Omid Djalili stars as Dr Rance in the insanely funny comedy WHAT THE BUTLER SAW, by Joe Orton.

Directed by Sean Foley, What the Butler Saw was completed a month before Joe Orton’s death and therefore was the last play ever written by the writer (and arguably his best). It’s first performance was at London’s Queen’s Theatre.

This tear jerkingly funny play is a full-throttle comedy with some outrageous twists and hysterical one-liners, as the characters lose their wits, the plot, and there cloches!

When Dr Prentice the instructs his new secretary to undress, little does he expect to be interrupted by his wife, her blackmailing lover, a meddling government inspector and an inquisitive policeman. But hiding a naked woman is the least of his worries, as libidos run riot, identities are swapped and.

Instructing his new secretary to undress, the last thing psychoanalyst Dr Prentice expects is to be interrupted by an inquisitice policeman, meddling government inspector, together with his wife and her blackmailing lover! However this is the last of his worries, as identities are swapped, social decorum is buried and libidos run riot.

Award-winning British-Iranian comedian and actor Omid Djalili is not only widely accepted as one of Britain’s funniest stand-up comedians, but has also starred in a number of films including Gladiator , The Mummy, Spy Game, Mean Machine, Casanova, Modi’ gliani, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ,The Love Guru, Sex and the City 2 and The Infidel. His television credits include Dinutopia, Whoopi, Small Potatoes, and The Omid Djalili Show. His currently on a sell-out UK Tour at the Hammersmith Apollo. Which finishes on 25 February.

Directed by Sean Foley, director of current West End hit production, The Ladykillers and co-founder of the Right Size, Foley has created more than 10 comedies for the theatre, including “The Play What I Wrote”, winner of an Olivier Award. He also directed Rob Brydon and Kenneth Branagh in The Painkiller at the Lyric Theatre, Belfas in his own adaptation of Francis Veber’s play.

The King’s Speech play comes to the West End! After the success of the film version starring Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter and winning four Oscars, the stage adaption comes to the Wyndham’s Theatre on 22nd March. David Seidler’s original play is bought to life by Charles Edwards (The 39 Steps, Much Ado about Nothing) in the leading role of Bertie, Duke of York. Based on a true story, Bertie is thrust into the role of King George VI after his brother’s abdication, Bertie wrestles to overcome his stammering speech impediment with the help of his speech therapist Lionel Logue (played by Jonathan Hyde). The unconventional friendship between King George and the Commoner is affectingly authentic and funny. Bertie struggles to find his voice as King of England as the Nazi threat looms and great civil unrest at home and royal secrets explode into the news.

Seidler actually wrote this stage version many years before The King’s Speech was filmed. It was written in the 1970’s and 80’s but the Queen Mother asked Seidler not to pursue the project during her lifetime. After her death in 2002 he returned to his script to finish it. With the enormous success of the film it was inevitable that the stage adaption would be welcomed to the West End. The outstanding cast bring this captivating play a warmth and intimancy that can only be experienced in the theatre. One Man, Two Guvnors is making the transition to the Theatre Royal Haymarket after wowing audiences at the Lyttelton National Theatre and the Adelphi. From these performances, James Corden’s understudy Owain Arthur steps into the lead role of Francis Henshall. Set in the 1960s in Brighton, Henshall is sacked from a band which forces him to take a job as a servant to a local crook. Following his stomache he takes another job as a servant to fund his massive eating habits. He has two masters but they must never come face to face – not an easy task!

Corden who played Henshall at the Lyttelton and Adelphi, is now taking the show across the country and then to the other side of the Atlantic. Owain Arthur has appeared on screen in Doctors, The Friday Night Club and Casualty and acted in Birdsong at the Harold Pinter Theatre and Romeo and Juliet.

This show starts Friday 2^nd March and is initially booking until 15^th September 2012.

The West End debut of the Hollywood actor Danny DeVito makes it way to the Savoy Theatre in May with previews from Friday 27th April. DeVito will appear alongside Richard Griffiths in Neil Simon’s play The Sunshine Boys. Thea Sharrock will be directing who has been behind many London productions over the years.

The play focuses on two former stars of the stage, Willy Clark (DeVito) and Al Lewis (Griffiths) who once performed as a Vaudevillan team but had grown to despise each other after decades together. CBS call them up and ask them to reunite for a tv special but only time will tell if they will be able to work together again and forget the past.

Danny DeVito is well known for his films over the years including Jewel of the Nile, Romancing the Stone, Batman Returns and also the comedies Matilda, Twins and Junior. He follows in the footsteps of many Hollywood stars to make their way to the West End. Richard Griffiths was last in the play The Habit of Art and also the History Boys at the Lyttelton National Theatre.

About the Writer

Born in Hampstead, London in 1939, the prolific English playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn CBE has written some 73 plays, over 40 of which have been produced in the West End.  With 10 plays having been staged on Broadway, his play have won a number of prestigious awards including 2 Tony nominations, 1 Tony Award and 7 London Evening Standard Awards.
