CEP's as well

Jay Mathews over at washingtonpost.com posted his "Ten Tips for Picking a Good School." His number 9 is reflective of Mr. Mathews ignoring CEPs in favor of AP and IB:

9. Look for challenging high schools.

These days, that means schools that have many Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses, and that encourage all interested students, no matter what their grade-point averages, to take those courses and the independently written and scored AP or IB tests.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/25/AR2008022500675.html?nav=rss_opinion/columns

It's like banging your head against a wall - AP and IB are not the only games in town! There are quality concurrent enrollment programs across the country that challenge students, and provide professional development for teachers.
<!--

The skills that serve them well in the high school classrooms are not the skills that will continue to serve them well in a college classroom. The question was how to develop and grow those skills. The answer, of course, is to provide them with the opportunity to take a college course while they are still in high school. Students in college "prep" courses see them as just that, preparation. But put students in an actual college course and they can experience first-hand what the work load and curriculum are like. They can also gain the experience of what it feels like to have a course "count," because they are earning college credit and receive a transcript to take with them wherever they matriculate for their college career. It's the difference between watching a film on skydiving and taking that first jump. The exhilaration of truly having done it sends you into the future all the more confident and competent.
<!--

I took a fine calculus course at my local city college when I was in high school. But my conversations with college admissions officers and experts on community college offerings suggest that too many of these dual enrollment course are not so challenging. Some do not even require final exams to receive the college credit."

Excuse me Mr. Mathews, but if I recall correctly, you don't actually count the results of the tests, just the numbers taken, so does it really matter if there is a final exam, rather than multiple ways of assessing students' knowledge and mastery of the content?

There are ways for college admissions to assess the quality of the courses taken through dual/concurrent enrollment, see if they are offered by NACEP accredited programs.

And, lastly, concurrent enrollment courses are offered through a variety of institutions: four-year public and private, as well as two-year private and community college.
<!--

In my view, the best thing about AP and IB is not the college credits, but the way they add juice to the high school experience, giving teens a chance to experience great teaching in preparation for a demanding final exam.

Too bad college and university courses don't come down to a one time, one shot exam.
<!--
