Honda Civic RS Turbo: The modern sedan with ’90s vibes

Those in their thirties or early forties might have been fortunate enough to have some really cool sedans as their college cars, such as the Toyota Corolla and the Mitsubishi Lancer. Of course, who could forget about the venerable Honda Civic SiR? If you had one, you were immediately one of the “cool kids.” Fast-forward to today, and you’ll see that the typical college car is some subcompact or small crossover.

While practical, the subcompact or the crossover lacks the flair that sedans used to have. So, if you are a tito looking to get a family sedan and relive his college years, you’ll be glad to know that the 11th-generation Honda Civic has managed to retain that same spirit that was lost when the crossover nation attacked.

This is the top-dog Civic, the RS. RS means “Road Sailing”—it’s no SiR with a high-revving engine and a manual gearbox; it has the same powertrain as the lesser variants—so it’s simply the best and most pogi-looking Civic on offer until the FL5 Type R makes its way to our shores.

Styling is subjective, and the Civic is no stranger to this kind of controversy, especially with its “flip-flop curse” where every other year seems to be a hit after a miss. Despite what fans of the 10th-generation say, the general consensus for this year is that Honda has a very good-looking vehicle on its hands.

While more conservative owners would look to the S and V Turbo variants, the RS tugs at my 24-year-old heartstrings with its “boy racer” appeal. In fact, this looks racier than its Type R equivalent, thanks to the 18-inch matte-black wheels and the black door handles, mirrors and spoiler.

But I can’t help but nitpick a bit, considering its price of P1.775 million. Bear with me, as you’ll hear me bring this up a lot.

For one, while the front has full-LED lighting, it’s of the reflector type, meaning that the beam pattern and cutoff aren’t as sharp when compared to projectors. Also, the rear turn signals are halogens, while everything else is LED. Nothing that the Civic’s extensive aftermarket catalog can’t fix, of course.

As soon as you clamber into the vehicle’s comfortable and six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, the older generation will be greeted with a familiar feeling—amazing visibility, a low beltline that sits even below those of other sedans on the market, and the terror you get when large SUVs surround you in traffic.

It has its advantages and disadvantages, especially with its low ride height of 134mm, but I promise you that this is the most sports-car-like experience you can get while comfortably hauling two adults in the rear (save the middle seat for a small child). Rear passengers have rear cupholders in the armrest and climate vents of their own, but there’s a blank plate for two nonexistent USB ports, which should be there for the price.

The interior is upholstered in a mix of leather and suede with red accents and orange ambient lighting, incredibly tactile switchgear, solid build quality, and a tasteful use of trim throughout the cabin.

The trunk capacity is a good 495L with tools and a space-saving spare hidden underneath a false floor, but the rear deck-mounted subwoofer will make loading taller items a slight challenge. For longer items, the seats can be folded down (only from the trunk) in a 60:40 split, but the aperture will limit what can be fitted.

The main reason you would normally go for the RS is the added tech and niceties that separate it from the lower variants.

In the case of the interior, you get a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a very competent nine-inch infotainment that runs on the Android Automotive OS, and an excellent 12-speaker Bose audio system. Other small goodies are dual-zone climate control, a frameless auto-dimming mirror, wireless charging, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Of course, you would want to use phone connectivity (preferably wired for the best audio quality and stability), but you can use the infotainment alone as the built-in navigation system is very competent (and even displays directions on the gauge cluster).

The Honda Sensing driver-assistance suite has to be one of my favorite safety systems out there with how unobtrusive and accurate it is. I didn’t get to test it out as extensively as my colleague did, but using it daily shows just how well it works.

The adaptive cruise control system worked really well even within the city for stop-and-go traffic, and combined with the lead-car departure notification and collision-mitigating brake system works like magic, alerting me of a motorist with broken taillights who suddenly stepped on the brakes.

I personally find the LaneWatch camera to be a little redundant with how good visibility is in the cabin. It’s nice to have compared to nothing, but I would have preferred parking sensors for the vehicle’s price

As for the meat and potatoes of this car, it drives really well. Yes, it has the same 1.5-liter turbocharged in-line-four engine (L15BG) with 176hp and 240Nm, and continuously variable transmission as the lower variants, but the difference here is the addition of a Sport mode.

Before you call me out, the Sport mode (and Eco, to an extension) works a little differently in the Civic compared to others, where it would sharpen the throttle and hold revs longer.

You see, in Normal mode, the transmission “fakes” shifts to make it feel like a regular vehicle, but put it in the other two modes and it disables the shift logic, allowing the CVT to stay in the ideal rev range for performance or frugality. This is how CVTs are supposed to work, actually, but you can always take over with the paddle shifters that feel almost instantaneous.

In peak Christmas traffic, the car gave me 6.4km/L, but when the roads opened up, it was easy to get 9.9km/L in the city, and 13.6km/L on the highway with four adults inside. The ability to remotely start your engine is nice to cool the cabin down, but it will affect your fuel economy for sure.

As for driving it around, the sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires (235mm wide) make a world of a difference. This car grips the pavement like nobody’s business, and takes corners with gusto.

There are trade-offs like the increased tire noise at highway speeds (considering the Civic’s already so-so NVH performance), and the ride quality is on the firm side, especially with those thin sidewalls. The things you have to put up with for looking good, I guess.

One thing to note is that despite this car feeling agile for spirited driving, this is not a nimble car in the city.

Aside from watching out for taller-than-usual speed humps, avoiding deep potholes, and taking ramps diagonally, this vehicle’s turning radius of 5.7m is SUV-like, having to do three or more point-turns in places that other sedans can take easily. This could be a result of the wider tires, as the V and the S have a smaller (but still large) turning radius of 5.4m.

So, despite all these trade-offs and the substantially higher price, is the Civic RS still worth it? Well, from a practical standpoint, it makes a lot of sense as it has everything most people need from a Civic.

I had a discussion with a friend who was eyeing the 11th-generation Civic to replace his aging Civic FD. We agreed that if someone tried to spec out a V or an S to make it as close as possible to the RS, he would end up spending more and still have missing features, so it’s for the kind of person who would opt for a higher-spec device just because he wants the best out of something.

If you have the money and are willing to spend it on this, you are getting one heck of a sedan, something that has the potential to be loved by many in the future. To me, the Civic RS is a really good throwback, a modern time capsule that will help you reminisce about your past

The new Honda Civic Type R (FL5)

Whenever a new Honda Civic Type R gets released, it’s usually greeted with a whole lot of hype and fanfare, alongside very high expectations for its performance. After all, it is the brand’s halo car now that the NSX got the ax last year.

While the Philippines has yet to receive the all-new FL5, other countries such as the United States and Japan are some of the first to receive it. I recently ventured to the Honda HQ in Minami-Aoyama in Tokyo in search of the championship-winning RB18.

Instead of being greeted by the car and cardboard cutouts of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, we were pleasantly surprised to find the latest Civic Type R on display, open to the public to interact with and take photos of.

Just like the 11th-generation Civic, the FL5 loses its edgy, Gundam-inspired angles for a more mature appearance. So much so that my friend even told me that “it looks like an Accord,” and he’s right.

To be honest, I appreciate that the new car makes an effort to return to its sleeper origins with toned-down bodywork. Of course, it has red Honda and Type R badges, smaller 19-inch wheels shod by Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber (265/30) hiding massive Brembo brakes that measure 350mm for the front and 305mm for the rear, and the trademark center triple exhaust.

The flared-out dimensions—4,595mm long, 1,890mm wide, and 1,405mm tall, with a lower ride height (125mm)—and the huge wing glued onto the back (which kind of looks aftermarket) will make you know you’re staring at a special Civic.

And the best part? All of the vents are functional and actually improve cooling compared to the outgoing FK8, including the hood vent, which is for the enlarged radiator. Kudos to the designers.

Step inside and you will probably be surprised by how much red there is in the cabin. You can see the go-fast color extend to the entire footwell, carpets, and bucket seats that will firmly hug you in place.

Other than that, it’s identical to the 11th-generation Civic, down to the love-it-or-hate-it honeycomb grille (no more faux carbon fiber, thankfully), the clicky switchgear, the nine-inch touchscreen, the Bose sound system, the wireless charging pad, and the Honda Sensing safety suite.

The Type R-exclusive goodies include the Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and front seats, the teardrop-shaped aluminum shift knob that feels amazing to use, the +R exclusive customizations to the digital gauge cluster, the built-in Honda LogR telemetry app, and the Type R plaque that is now found within the honeycomb grille rather than the center console.

Of course, this being a Civic hatchback, rear-seat passengers are treated to generous headroom and legroom for a performance car.

With the integration of the cupholders in the middle seat, the lack of a center headrest and seatbelt means that Honda wants you to strictly treat this as a four-seater. It’s way more practical than something like a Subaru WRX, especially with the rear seats that can fold down in a 60:40 split.

You must be interested in what’s improved under the hood, right? Well, it’s powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder as the FK8—the K20C—but tweaks like a redesigned turbo, an increased air intake rate, improved cooling, and a more efficient exhaust system bump the power and the torque up to 325hp (at 6,500rpm) and 420Nm (at 2,600rpm to 4,000rpm).

It also receives a lighter flywheel and a revised rev-match system for the six-speed manual transmission, a helical limited-slip differential, improved body rigidity, and a dual-axis strut front suspension (the rear uses a multilink setup) that helps mitigate torque steer from all the power being sent to the front wheels—all in a chassis that weighs 1,430kg.

While Honda Cars Philippines has no confirmation as to when it will bring the latest Civic Type R over to our shores, it’s simply a no-brainer as our country has officially received the FK8. Excited?

Pursuant to the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) eyes to roll out more transportation PPP projects, prioritizing the development of transport systems in the sectors of aviation and airports, railways, maritime, and active road transport infrastructure.

In this regard, the Committee on Public-Private Partnership Center Project Development and Monitoring Facility (PDMF) has approved the funding for project preparation studies of the North Long Haul Inter-Regional Railway (NCR-Ilocos, Cagayan), NCR EDSA Busway, and the Manila Bay-Pasig River-Laguna Lake Ferry.

Forming part of the Luzon Railway Network along with the Subic-Clark Railway and the South Long Haul, the North Long Haul Inter-Regional Railway is slated to connect the National Capital Region (NCR) to the regions of Ilocos and Cagayan.

It is envisioned to cater to long-distance passengers and cargoes, which shall then improve access to major economic centers and strengthening supply chains for agricultural products. The project includes the construction of new stations and cargo terminals.

The NCR EDSA Busway, on the other hand, will greatly enhance the existing EDSA Carousel. New stations will be developed and existing facilities will be enhanced to be universally accessible, gender responsive, and climate resilient. Capacity, comfort, and reliability of transport services will likewise be upgraded and aligned to international standards.

The Manila Bay-Pasig River-Laguna Lake Ferry, meanwhile, is set to be a high-capacity and high-quality mass transit ferry system, benefiting commuters, students, and tourists in NCR, Region III, and Region IV-A. New ferry stations will also be built and existing facilities will be improved with intermodal transfers with other transit systems and active mobility networks.

The Marcos Administration sees the “great potential” of PPPs to strengthen regional logistics networks and make commuting more comfortable, reliable, and affordable. During the first 100 days, the current administration revised the Build-Operate-Transfer Law Implementing Rules and Regulations to attract more private investors and to streamline government processes.

Through the PDMF, international experts will be engaged to conduct high-quality and robust project preparation studies for these first three transportation PPP projects.

It’s always good news whenever there are efforts from the government to try and improve the country’s mass transport system. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has now shared that it is eyeing to roll out more Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects focused on further developing transport infrastructure.

The new railway aims to connect the capital to the northern regions of Ilocos and Cagayan. It will provide long-distance transport for both commuters and cargo, and it will include the construction of new stations and cargo terminals.

The NCR EDSA Busway, meanwhile, will build on the existing busway system on the major thoroughfare. There will be new stations built along the current network, and the capacity, comfort, and reliability of the transport services will be upgraded and “aligned to international standards.”

As for the third among the three, this one seeks to connect the metro to areas in Regions III and IV-A via a high-capacity, high-quality mass transit ferry system. The new ferry service will have “intermodal transfers with other transit systems and active mobility networks.”

Sounds promising enough, no? These will be part of the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, so we expect at least significant progress to be made within the term of the current administration.

Mercedes-Benz unveils electric Marco Polo camper van concept

Electric cars have entered pretty much every segment by now. From compacts to sports cars and even pickups, if a vehicle has wheels, it has seemingly been electrified by now. One segment where ICE cars still had the upper hand so far was camper vans, but even that’s about to change now if the latest Mercedes-Benz concept car is anything to go by.

Say hello to the Concept EQT Marco Polo, a preview of a new micro camper van due to be released by the Germans in 2023. Based on the long-wheelbase version of the EQT, this leisure mobile has been tricked out to leave its passengers feeling like happy campers.

No need to worry about searching for gas stations with this.

Let’s start with the technical specs. When it hits showrooms, the production version will initially come with a 45kWh lithium-ion battery connected to an electric motor that produces 122hp and 245Nm.

Charging can be done at 22kW AC or up to 80kW DC, the latter filling the battery from 10% to 80% in 38 minutes if conditions are right.

The charging port is hidden under the Mercedes star at the front for easy access, and the battery itself sits in a crash-protected location in front of the rear axle.

One of the drawbacks of a traditional camper van is the fact that all the furniture and fittings are fixed in place, making the car less useful for other applications.

Mercedes engineers thought of that and designed this snuggle-mobile in such a way that all furniture units can be removed by two people in five minutes.

Because the version due to go on sale is a mere 4,498mm long, 1,859mm wide, and 1,819mm high, it will also fit into most standard garages and multistory car parks, removing another drawback of more conventional and bigger campers.

Inside, features include two sleeping places (one in the raised roof and one in the back of the vehicle), a 16L fridge, a fold-out table, a sink with a 12L water tank, and not one but two cookers. An induction cooker is paired with a removable gas cooker to ensure campers never go hungry and can even cook their meals outside if they fancy.

A sun awning makes sure the only thing that may get burned is the food. Seven USB ports keep gadgets charged up, and on the roof there’s a solar panel that charges an additional removable battery, meaning the car can be self-sufficient under the right circumstances. If there’s no sun, then the battery can also be charged by simply plugging it into an outlet.

The rear windows can be blacked out at the press of a button, and all others can be darkened with manual blackout elements. Good sleep is further ensured by a ventilation grille with added insect protection. One quite innovative idea of this new setup is the fact that you can buy all the camper modules separately for your non-camper EQT. That way, you won’t be getting the fold-out roof, but you can have the rear bed and the kitchen module turning your weekday utility van into a weekend getaway vehicle.

Maybe the best bit about this car is the fact that Mercedes plans to start selling it for just €49,000 (P2,868,000) in its home market, which is a killer price for a fully electric camper van.

Ford Everest Titanium+ 4x2: Elevates your everyday drive

As an automotive journalist, I’m very fortunate to have a job that affords me the luxury of hopping in and out of the latest and greatest cars to come out, but that luxury can sometimes take a bit of the excitement away from trying out less exotic, everyday cars such as a truck-based SUV.

This profession desensitizes you in a way just because you get to try out so many different things. That being said, good eggs need to shine extremely bright for them to cut through the crowd. And to me, this new Ford Everest is a bright and shiny little egg in the midsize SUV basket.

If this new generation’s styling looks like a mere evolution of the previous model’s appearance to you, that’s because this is still based on the T6 platform. The overall silhouette of the vehicle is largely the same, but the body lines are now more contoured and chiseled, and the accents are more angular. It looks as though the old one went to the gym, took a ton of protein powder, and got ripped.

I was surprised at how large this car has gotten when I first laid eyes on it. The track is 50mm wider, and the wheelbase has also been lengthened by the same amount. The outgoing model is no ugly duck, but this new one just looks more even and proportional with the wider stance. It’s pretty tall as well, making other ladder-on-frame SUVs look absolutely diminutive next to it.

Finally, illuminated taillight extensions.

Some have criticized the new face of the Everest and the Ranger, saying that the nose appears flat. And while this is quickly apparent in the metal, the new front end does lend an imposing presence similar to those of the brand’s full-size North American offerings. The rear end has also received a significant redesign. Gone are the “rat ears” of old, and in their place are these gorgeous LED taillamps that just look the business.

Simple and straight to the point. We approve.

The angular theme continues inside. Where the previous model was more luxurious and upscale, Ford has chosen to go for a sportier, minimalist vibe this time around.

When you step into the Everest, the doors shut with a nice, reassuring thud instead of the old’s rattly click. The interior is simple yet sophisticated at the same time. It has a lot of flat, plain surfaces adorned by elegant accents such as the honeycomb aircon louvres, while ambient light strips run across the dashboard and the door cards to add a splash of color to the otherwise monochromatic space.

The interior offers a lot of practicality.

The cabin feels wide and airy thanks to the overall increase in size, and does a good job of insulating its occupants from the noise and chaos of Philippine roads (although there is a good amount of tire roar emanating from the Goodyear Wranglers fitted to this demo).

The seats are well-bolstered and comfortable, and there are oodles of space for every passenger. Overall, no matter where you get to sit, this is a nice place to spend time in.

A temperature gauge on the left, and another one on the right. Both are static and cannot be removed. Why, Ford?

Though it is the best 4×2 Everest you can buy, the Titanium+ 4×2 trim does not get the full electronics suite of the Titanium+ 4×4. So, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control…all that good stuff has been deleted from the top-of-the-line RWD model.

Despite that, however, this is a master class in product planning. Yes, they omitted most of the safety features, but they did retain all of the premium creature comforts you make contact with on every single drive. And that really works to elevate the ownership experience.

It comes with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment unit capable of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a wireless charging pad to go along with it. HVAC controls are integrated into the screen, along with many other settings and functions. The last car I drove that had all these cost more than double this Everest’s P2.179-million price tag.

You also get Vehicle Hold, which holds the brakes at a stoplight to make driving less of a chore. The gauges are also mostly digital now, save for the fuel and temperature gauges flanking the screen. It’s not the most sophisticated digital cluster, but it is legible and straightforward.

Sadly, the trick shifter that has been making rounds on the Internet did not find its way into this model.

Sadly, Ford has chosen to gatekeep the 210hp biturbo 2.0-liter engine and reserve it solely for the 4×4 model. And so, the Titanium+ 4×2 has to make do with the single-turbo powerplant that churns out 170hp and 405Nm.

It performs much like the EcoBoost engines found in the brand’s smaller offerings in that it is very punchy down low. It accelerates effortlessly from stop to stop, and is very smooth around town. However, also like the EcoBoost engines, it starts to run out of steam at around 3,000rpm. There’s ample power available for most situations, but it won’t knock your socks off. I took it up the Marilaque twisties, and the Everest had enough power to climb up at a brisk pace, but given the engine’s power band, overtakes were quite unnerving, to say the least.

The six-speed automatic transmission may seem like a downgrade compared to the old seven- or 10-speed slushboxes of the previous generation, but in practice, it is a welcome upgrade. It gets the job done without the jerkiness of the old model’s tranny, and shifts gears intuitively. If I had to nitpick, I do wish Ford would ditch the +/- buttons and give us proper paddles or a selector on the shifter at the very least.

Driving this around is such a joy. The steering is light, the infotainment system is top-notch, and there are just enough driver aids to help you out without overwhelming you with information and warnings.

If you find yourself in one of these and you can't figure out how to get out, remember this picture.

The downsides make for a very short list. For one, the quality of the interior materials could be better. The design is fantastic and modern, but everything just feels a little too cheap. The leather on the steering wheel and the seats have a plasticky quality to them, and the actual plastic panels are rough and hollow, too.

Moreover, the previous model had its fair share of common issues, which I wish had been addressed in this model. In Facebook groups, you will find countless posts of owners complaining of rusted doors, wheel wells, and body seams. Another common complaint is that the interior door handles tend to break off without warning. Ford has rectified this by moving the release behind the door pull. An awkward ergonomic choice, but I do hope it works. I guess only time can tell if these quirks have really been ironed out.

Lastly, while the Everest’s rear end is coil-sprung instead of leaf-sprung as it is on the Ranger, the ride remains to be pretty stiff. I reckon this is largely due to the 20-inch tiis-pogi wheels fitted to the car out of the box.

I’m just going to come right out and say it. I loved this car. To be perfectly honest, I found myself asking my wife if we could buy one more times than I am willing to admit. It just has a way of elevating your everyday drive. For what this car is worth, it has no right to be this good. Cheap choice of leather aside, it genuinely feels like a budget-friendly Range Rover. What more can you ask for?

The extra-long Land Rover Defender 130 lands on our shores

The current-generation Land Rover Defender is a very desirable SUV if you’ve got the cash to splash. Why so? Well, apart from its gorgeous styling that won the 2021 World Car Design award, it is also one of the most iconic and capable off-roaders in the world.

The vehicle is also offered in a few different body styles and engine options, such as the adorable short-wheelbase, three-door Defender 90, the regular-wheelbase, five-door Defender 110, and more recently, the long-wheelbase Defender 130 variant that’ll allow you to carry around your family or extra cargo as you brave the outdoors (or the parking lot of a high-end mall).

The third body style is finally here, as Land Rover Philippines invited us to have a preview of the extra-long off-roader.

At first glance, you’re looking at mostly the same Defender, albeit with an extended rear end to accommodate the extra space needed for cargo or the third row of seats. There’s a mildly redesigned rear end and a panoramic sunroof (sorry, no more “alpine windows” here). It looks kind of odd when you view it side by side with the smaller 110, but on its own, it still manages to turn heads.

The one you see here is painted in the Defender 130-exclusive finish of Sedona Red with silver accents on the body cladding and the skid plates (called the Extended Bright Pack), which looks more regal than rugged, especially with the 22-inch wheels fitted to both units on display. You’ll probably want to get smaller wheels if you plan to bring this off-road.

The only thing that sets this apart from the other Defenders is the larger touchscreen, which other variants might eventually receive.

Inside, you won’t be seeing that much of a difference from the regular Defender’s luxurious cabin that is still upholstered with leather and soft-touch plastics—the latter of which is necessary if you plan to go off the beaten path and dirty up the cabin.

New to this is the enlarged 11.4-inch touchscreen running the latest Pivi Pro operating system. It features over-the-air updates, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and pushes out audio through an optional 10-speaker Meridian sound system.

You won't get a flat load floor with this SUV, but it will still haul a generous amount of cargo for you.

The biggest question most buyers will have is just how useful the extended rear end is. In five-seater form, you can carry up to 2,516L of cargo. But most will probably go for the eight-seater. Here are the official capacities:

Up to 2,291L with all seats down

Up to 1,232L with the third row down

Up to 389L with all seats up

Instead of the 'alpine windows', third-row occupants get a dedicated sunroof and aircon vents.

According to Land Rover, you should be able to comfortably fit three adults at the back behind the second-row seats, and just as I found out, it was surprisingly roomy for someone of my frame (5’10”), but do be warned that getting in and out of the third row is a bit of an awkward ordeal.

It was also capable of comfortably accommodating Coventry Motors head Chris Ward and my colleague for a quick video, making this great for bringing the boys out on a camping trip.

Yes, it still is a very capable off-roader.

For powertrain choices, Land Rover is offering it locally with the 3.0-liter in-line-six turbodiesel. These are still mated to the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with power being sent to all four wheels with a twin-speed transfer box.

Despite the added length of 340mm behind the rear axle, it’s still a capable off-roader with the Terrain Response system and the standard air suspension, but the approach, departure, and break-over angles have all been (understandably) affected compared to the Defender 110 (37.5°, 28.5° and 27.8°, respectively).

It is still capable of wading up to 900mm of water, and has 290mm of ground clearance (in off-road mode). And you’ll be relying on the digital rearview mirror and the 360° camera system most of the time to keep this large SUV dent-free.

The extended Defender 130 will start at P11.89 million, which slots it in between the equally sized Discovery and the P18-million+ Range Rover.

Considering owners of the latter won’t let it touch anything more than tarmac (even if it is capable) and the former can’t slog through uneven terrain as easily as the Defender, we’re sure that the target niche will love the extra capabilities that the stretched Defender brings to the table.

Well, someone at Volkswagen Norway sure thought so, and went on to build the office chair of our dreams.

Part of a marketing campaign for VW vans, the firm has created a chair that is meant to let you feel what it’s like to drive around in one of the firm’s utility vehicles without ever having to leave the office.

Gone are the days when you had to push your chair along the office using your feet. This baby will let you race around work or home at up to 20km/h, thanks to its in-built motor and battery that also provides 12km of range. That’s not all: This tricked-out seat comes with plenty of other functions that make it more advanced than many real cars.

There’s a reversing camera and 360° collision-avoidance sensors to prevent the boss from sneaking up on you, a touchscreen display, USB chargers, party lights, a horn, and even a full entertainment system.

The embroidered seat is heated, and the whole thing has been given a metallic paint finish. Rolling along on four-inch rims, it is steered with pedals and has LED lighting to ensure you can even roam around the office at night. As the trunk isn’t exactly big, it even comes with a miniature trailer hitch.

Sandro Marcos, Romualdez push for SIM card registration to curb text scams

Presumptive Speaker and Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and presidential son and Ilocos Norte Rep. Sandro Marcos, and two other solons have jointly filed a bill seeking to require the registration of all postpaid and prepaid mobile phone subscriber identity module (SIM) cards.

The two, along with Tingog party-list Representatives Yedda Marie Romualdez and Jude Acidre expressed their belief that the registration of SIM cards will help eradicate criminal activities, particularly scams.

“Having an unregulated SIM card market has also given way to several mobile phone scams. The cases range from simple text messages asking users to send cellular loads, to more sophisticated voice phishing methods and marketing spams that are used to gain unauthorized access to sensitive personal information of unsuspecting mobile phone users,” the authors said in the explanatory note of House Bill 14.

While telecommunication companies have blocked a number of SIM cards, the authors said scammers could easily replace them because of the availability of prepaid mobile phone subscriptions.

“Furthermore, due to the lack of SIM card registration, it becomes nearly impossible to trace the persons behind the text scams and hold them accountable for fraud, breach of data privacy, or other punishable offenses that they committed using an unknown mobile number,” the measure read.

Under the measure, all public telecommunications entities (PTE) or authorized sellers shall require an end-user to accomplish and sign a form indicating the subscriber’s name, date of birth, gender, his address as appearing on his/her valid identification card.

Users of SIM cards sold or issued prior to the effectivity of the proposed SIM Card Registration Act will also be required to register.

If the violator is a PTE, the president or officer responsible will be meted with a fine of up to P300,000 for the first offense, up to P500,000 for the second offense, and up to P1 million for the third and any succeeding violation.

If the violator is an authorized seller, his operation shall be suspended and a fine of P5,000 to P50,000 shall be imposed.

If the offender is an officer or employee of an implementing agency, he shall be dismissed from the service and fined, without prejudice to the filing of appropriate criminal, civil and administrative charges.

SEC orders Rappler to shut down

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has ordered the revocation of online news site Rappler’s license to operate.

In a 29-page decision dated January 11, the SEC ruled that Rappler, Inc. and its controlling shareholder Rappler Holdings Corp. were “liable for violating the constitutional and statutory Foreign Equity Restrictions in Mass Media enforceable through rules and laws within the mandate of the Commission.”

The online media outfit has been accused of purportedly using “deception” to circumvent a provision in the Philippine Constitution, which mandates 100 percent Filipino ownership of mass media.

Citing Rappler as the “mass media entity that sold control to foreigners,” the SEC ruling, which was served to Rappler on Friday, decided to revoke the online news company’s certificate of incorporation.

Likewise stripped of its certificate of registration was Rappler’s 98.77-percent stockholder, Rappler Holdings Corp., which the SEC said was “existing for no other purpose than to effect deceptive scheme to circumvent the Constitution.”

The decision was signed by SEC Teresita Herbosa and three SEC Commissioners: Antonieta Ibe, Ephyo Luis Amatong, and Emilio Aquino. Another Commissioner, Blas James Viterbo, did not take part, in the decision-making.

Based on the 29-page SEC en banc ruling, the SEC said there was “substantial evidence that respondents intentionally created an elaborate scheme, upon which its receipt of over a million dollars from a foreign investor would be theoretically defensible – the investor would never own stock and would never receive dividends and he would never become an officer or director but respondents would still be able to give him his money’s worth in the form of negative control and cash contributions, all through a private contractual arrangement.”

The SEC added that since this “deceptive scheme” involved the sale of a security, it fell within Section 26 or the Anti-Fraud provision of the Securities Regulation Code.

A copy of the decision will “be furnished the Department of Justice for appropriate action,” the SEC said.

Based on the copy of the ruling, SEC had investigated this matter since December 22, 2016, when the Commission en banc received a letter from the Office of the Solicitor General requesting an investigation into Rappler and Rapper Holdings Corp. “for any possible contravention of the strict requirements of the 1987 Constitution” with regard to the issuances of Philippine depositary receipts to NBN Rappler LP and Omidyar Network Fund LLC.

In the same ruling, the SEC declared the Philippine depositary receipts (PDRs) issued to Omidyar “void” citing this as a “fraudulent” transaction under the Securities Regulation Code.

PDRs refer to derivative instruments which are based on the value of equities as underlying assets but don’t grant ownership to the holder.

In Rappler’s case, however, the SEC argued that the PDRs issued to Omidyar gave the foreign entity sufficient control even without having actual ownership.

“The foreign equity restriction is very clear. Anything less than 100 percent Filipino control is a violation. Conversely, anything more than exactly zero percent foreign control is a violation,” SEC said in its ruling.

“Here, the stockholders must have prior discussion with and approval of at least 2/3 of the PDR Holdings, meaning Rappler is at the very least under obligation to consult with Omidyar Network. The stockholder has become, in effect, subservient to the holder. It is neither 100 percent control by the Filipino stockholders nor is it 0 percent control by the foreigner PDS holders,” the SEC said.

Among others, the SECC also cited the Rule 3.1.8.2. of the 2015 SRC implementing rules and regulations which stated that “control exists whenever one entity has the power to govern the financial and operating policies of (another) entity under a statute or agreement.”

he SEC said this would even be true “even if the controlling entity does not own any equity, such as through agreements that grant influence in corporate matters.”

Likewise cited was Section 1 of the Commonwealth Act 108 also known as “The Dummy Act” which penalizes any citizen of the Philippines or of any specific country who allows his name or citizenship to be used for the purpose of evading constitutional or legal provisions which require Philippine or any specific citizenship as a requisite for the exercise or enjoyment of a right, franchise or privilege. The same law states that any alien or foreigner profiting thereby may also be held liable.

The SEC also cited the foreign negative investment list which included mass media as among the industries where 100-percent ownership was required.

SC junks DQ cases vs Marcos

TWO days before President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. takes his formal oath of office as the 17th President of the Republic of the Philippines, the Supreme Court (SC) has removed all legal barriers by junking the petitions that sought his disqualification from office.

The SC ruled unanimously,13-0, to allow Marcos to sit as the legitimate president of the country by affirming the findings of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The ruling was penned by SC Justice Rodil Zalameda. Justices Henry Paul Inting and Antonio Kho inhibited from the case.

The group of Fr. Christian Buenafe, Fides Lim, Ma. Edeliza Hernandez, Delia Lagman Sevilla, Roland Vibal and Josephine Lascano want the SC to issue a temporary restraining order against the Senate and House of Representatives from counting the votes cast for Marcos.

The petitioners also asked the court to declare as void ab initio the certificate of candidacy (CoC) filed by Marcos. They sought Marcos' disqualification based on his alleged failure to file his income tax returns (ITRs) when he was an official in Ilocos Norte

4 ways BBM can mimic father’s 1965 inaugural speech on June 30

This is understandable as the soon to be “PBBM” would most likely be a very popular president right out of the gate, his dominant majority vote victory in the elections still very fresh on people’s minds.

Suffice it to say that right now, the only person who knows the contents of Bongbong’s speech is Bongbong himself.

But if there’s a good indicator of the future, it’s the past. And over 57 years ago, Bongbong’s late father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr, delivered a speech for his inauguration as the 10th President of the Philippines that could very well inspire the younger Marcos given his obvious influences on him.

With that said, here are four broad themes and topics from the December 30, 1965 inauguration speech that Marcos Jr. could touch upon or purposely call back to:

‘We are in crisis‘

To enumerate the many problems facing the country would be reasonable as a new president lays down his or her mission statement. For Marcos Jr., these challenges include the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the national debt worth over P12 trillion, and the looming food crisis.

Marcos Sr. minced no words in front of his kababayans at Quirino Grandstand when he declared “We are in crisis” and that the government coffers were “empty”.

“Our government in the past few months has exhausted all available domestic and foreign sources of borrowing. Our public financial institutions have been burdened to the last loanable peso. The lending capacity of the Central Bank has been utilized to the full. Our national government is indebted to our local governments. There are no funds available for public works and little of the appropriations for our national government for the present fiscal year. Industry is at a standstill. Many corporations have declared bankruptcy. Local manufacturing firms have been compelled to close or reduce their capacity,” the late Marcos said.

“Unemployment has increased. Prices of essential commodities and services remain unstable. The availability of rice remains uncertain. Very recently the transportation companies with the sanction of the Public Service Commission hiked their fares on the plea of survival,” he added.

He means business

With the problems identified, Marcos Sr. went on to state that he meant business, especially on the matter of preserving law and order–one of his main concerns at that time.

“We must, therefore, aim quickly at the establishment of a genuine rule of law. We shall use the fullest powers of the Presidency to stop smuggling and lawlessness,” the late President said.

“I, therefore, call upon all to join hands with me in maintaining the supremacy of the law. To those flaunt the law, I say: this is my constitutional duty and I am resolved to perform it. But it is not mine alone but yours. For whether Filipino or alien you survive under the mantle of protection granted by our laws. Marcos Jr., with a 31 million-strong mandate, certainly has the political capital needed to get things done.

The economy is king

Economic stability will be more important than ever as the Philippines tries to claw past the effect of the pandemic and the fallout from Russia-Ukraine war. As the incoming President, Marcos Jr. can break down his plans for economic recovery if only to quell the minds of Filipinos.

His father did something similar in 1965, just a few years away from a global fuel crisis, when he declared, “We have come to realize that economic planning is as essential for freedom as political planning.”

“Before today we had squandered the energies and resourcefulness of our people. In the government we saw a crippling hesitancy and timidity to face the facts of our times and to boldly provide the initiative,” Marcos Sr. said.

The President-elect recently shocked many by voluntarily taking on the portfolio of the Department of Agriculture (DA) secretary amid prospects of tightened food supply and skyrocketing prices.

This move mirrors Marcos Sr.’s remarks in the same speech: “Our people sought a new administration in the expectation of a meaningful change – certainly a bolder, more courageous approach to our problems.”

Sacrifice, heroes needed

With the challenges of 2022 and beyond clearly stated, Marcos Jr. is expected to rally his kababayans with equal parts fervor and vigor.

His father did this nearly six decades ago by asking public servant to sacrifice for the sake of the public, and the for public to tap into their inner “hero”.

“I, therefore, first call upon the public servants for self-sacrifice. Long have we depended upon the people. In every crisis, we call upon our citizens to bear the burden of sacrifice. Now, let the people depend upon us,” Marcos Sr. said.

He added: “We must awake the hero inherent in every man. We must harness the wills and the hearts of all our people. We must find the secret chords which turn ordinary men into heroes, mediocre fighters into champions.

“Not one hero alone do I ask from you – but many; nay all, I ask all of you to be the heroes of our nation,” the late President said.

Marcos Jr.’s inauguration will take place at the National Museum in Manila.
