How Long is Too Long?

Many times I am asked how many days would I suggest to see and do everything Disney World has to offer. The answer to this question has one quick answer and one that is more complex than this blog has time to answer. The quick responses that you will never experience all of Disney World. There will always be a restaurant, attraction or show that you didn't have time to get to, and will thus be saved for your return trip. The long answer is that it truly depends on the kind of Disney vacation you are looking for.

The One-Day/One-Park Vacationers

If your family wants to experience as much Disney magic as possible on your vacation, you will want to consider multiple days to spend within the parks, time to explore your resort and Downtown Disney. For years, my family did a one-day/one-park trip, which was enough for us, since our vacation encompassed just Magic Kingdom and an off-site hotel. We would add a day at Universal and/or Sea World, the occasional Gatorland and Space Coast visits along with a few night at the beach. This works great for a week-long "Florida" trip, but clearly lacks focus. If you knew my family, you would need no further explanation! While we experienced many of the highlights of Florida tourism, we didn't have a true fulfilling Disney immersion with our one day.

Most of this is due to the fact that when we were making our annual trek to the Sunshine State, Disney had two parks, and my parents weren't convinced that EPCOT Center would ever live up to their expectations (nor could their pocketbooks take such a hit). Nowadays with four theme parks, two water parks, four golf courses and 27 themed resorts, Disney World is a destination that deserves your undivided attention. Having said that, memories can be made with a one day/one park ticket - so don't count it out! A full day at Magic Kingdom park is a great option for families with limited budgets, those who have limited time, as well as those who are hesitant to jump into Disney Destinations with both feet.

Multiple Day Vacationers

For many families, a week-long Disney vacation is typical, while some opt for 3-5 days. Each of these allows for multiple days within the theme parks and time to enjoy the resort. A popular ticket option is a multiple day base ticket, which allows a visit to a specified park once per day. Guests are permitted to come and go throughout the day within the specified park. Many guests chose a 4-day base ticket which allows them to devote one day to each of the four theme parks - Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

Other families choose to add the Park Hopper option, which allows guests to enter any number of the theme parks each day. Adding the Park Hopper is a great way to create flexibility during your vacation. Families with Park Hopper tickets can hop from park to park to experience various attractions throughout the day. You could begin your day at Animal Kingdom and take in several attractions before heading to Epcot for a phenomenal lunch in the World Showcase, then head to Magic Kingdom for an evening of thrills and fireworks.

The Walt Disney Travel Company is no dummy when it comes to pricing. Theme park tickets are reduced the more days that are purchased, the Dining Plan must be applied to each night of your stay, and Water Parks can be added on for the length of your ticket. It is important to look at all the elements of ticket pricing before making your final decision.

Disney World vacations are not "one size fits all." Each family must choose a package that works best fits their vacation needs. More time in the parks? Water parks included? Downtime by the resort pool? Shows at Downtown Disney/Disney Springs? Character dining? There are many things to factor!

The Dork's Plan

As our family has changed, our travel planning has also changed. For my family of 5, with young kids ages 7, 5, and 18 months, we typically stay 7 nights at a Disney resort (our most recent two have been at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, with our upcoming being at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa) with a 7-day Park Hopper ticket and the Disney Dining Plan. We have found that this amount of time works best for us so we don't feel rushed. It is enough time to see most of what we hope to see and do the majority of the things we hope to do without feeling disappointed for not getting to everything on our list - which will inevitably happen.

Dining at the World - Our Favorites

This is the time of year that my family develops our annual case of Disney Fever. Call it holiday spirit, call it a change in the weather, but I know exactly what to attribute this Disney-inspired longing to.

We are nearly 180 days out from our travel dates!

Historically speaking, this is the McDowell's sixth (or seventh) trip together and more than I can count as an individual. Needless to say, we have experienced many of the dining experiences available within the Walt Disney World Resort. Over the years our favorites have changed, and we have racked up some that we don't care to experience again for one reason or another. Let me share some of our favorites in no particular order!

1900 Park Fare - Dinner
We love to visit Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa any time to experience the ambiance of the Victoria Era of Florida. Dining with Cinderella and her prince is an added bonus! We are always treated like royalty from the characters (Cinderella, Prince Charming, Lady Tremaine, Anastasia, and Drisella, and occasionally Fairy Godmother - all subject to change). The food is basic buffet fare, but our experience has always found well cooked, hot food with decent service from cast members. The number of characters rotating to the table keeps the kids engaged - and offers a great incentive for finishing their food!
Our Best Memory: Cinderella plucked a 2-year-old mesmerized Maggie from her high chair, pulled her to the floor and into her princess lap for a snuggle session. When the Prince arrived, Cinderella and Maggie were still gazing into each others eyes, when he decided to join them on the floor for more cuddles, ending with a Cinderella kiss - where we could not wash away the lipstick from Maggie's cheek!

Whispering Canyon Cafe
This spirited, rustic BBQ restaurant has gotten some mixed reviews on several message boards lately, but we still consider it one of our favorites. We love the Canyon Skillet, which arrives family style to your table, and offers all-you-can-eat BBQ irk, ribs, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, and baked beans. Cornbread completes the meal all within the wild atmosphere of the restaurant, which is adjacent to the Wilderness Lodge lobby. Early on, we weren't as excited with the antics of the cast members - making a mockery of guests by placing napkin-hats on their heads, bringing pitchers of beverages to the table instead of the typical mason jar, screeching when folks ask for ketchup, and announcing celebrations, like birthdays to the patrons at the top of their lungs - however, the food won us! The truth is that anyplace that offers unlimited milkshakes will always win for us!
Our Best Memory: Our youngest was making a mess on the floor - as toddlers do - and our server brought a converted trash bag and tied it around her neck. As it draped to the floor, we laughed hysterically at our child covered in the world's largest bib!

Ohana
While this restaurant offers characters at breakfast, we typically spend our table service time at dinner, as to maximize our morning energy within the parks. Ohana is located within Disney's Polynesian Village Resort and transports its guests to lands with volcanoes and seaside landscapes. While you can no longer see Magic Kingdom from most areas of the restaurant, the food at this restaurant keeps us coming back! We love the family style entrees served from large skewers, and friendly staff! While I am not a huge meat eater, I love the atmosphere with ukulele playing, coconut races with the kids, and limbo and hula hoop contests.
Our Best Memory: Everyone is treated like family, with the servers introducing themselves as Cousins. This sparked our oldest to call everyone cousin for the rest of the trip.

Ohana

Garden Grill
This restaurant is often overlooked at Epcot's Future World. Nestled within the Land pavilion, Garden Grill offers a few unique experiences that we absolutely love! Offering another family-style meal, this restaurant rotates to display views of the Living with the Land attraction on the first floor below. On this attraction, guests learn of Epcot's hydroponic gardens, and the research that is taking place on site. It is from these gardens that much of the produce served at Garden Grill is harvested. I love farm-to-table dining, and am amazed even more that it can take place within the Walt Disney World Resort! Characters spend time at each table and include Farmer Mickey, Farmer Pluto, Chip and Dale. The food here is always fresh, and includes salad, beef filet, turkey breast, stuffing, fish of the day, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Garden Grill also offers a fantastic hidden Mickey in the foliage paintings on the wall!
Our Best Memory: Chip came to our table for photos and autographs and tried to strike up a conversation with me. He was obviously trying to tell me something important, but I was having difficulty understanding what his hand gestures meant. He grabbed my son's autograph book and wrote under his signature, "I saw you today in Adventureland!" We laughed for a long time after that! How fun for the characters to recognize and remember us across theme parks!

Wherever you decide to make your danced Dining Reservations, remember to take advice with a grain of salt. Well meaning friends may try to deter you from a restaurant that your family may absolutely love! Read the restaurant descriptions through official Disney websites and make your own decisions! Table Service Dining for Families with Young Children

On the heels of this announcement comes the ever-popular planning question, "
What is the best way to use my credits?

While there are virtually thousands of options and opinions on this topic, I have my list of favorite places to utilize Table Service Dining Plan credits within The World.

Most table service restaurants are delightful and offer tasty food. In fact, I have not eaten at a table service Establishment within WDW and been overly disappointed. These are my current favorites for families with young children:

Whispering Canyon Cafe

Location: Disney's Wilderness Lodge
My Favorite Dish: Canyon Skillet (all you can eat): mixed greens with apple vinigrette, cornbread, smoked pork ribs, pulled pork, oven-roasted chicken, pork sausage, masked potatoes, coleslaw, beans, and corn on the cob.
Thoughts: Bottomless milkshakes! Need I say more? Mid-dining activities for kids. Witty servers. Ask for ketchup!

Garden Grill

Location: Epcot Future World/ The Land
My Favorite Dish: Garden fresh vegetables, smashed potatoes, turkey and dressing on the Family style Dinner
Thoughts: This restaurant rotates! Farmer Mickey, Farmer Pluto, Chip and Dale greet you during dinner with ever-changing views of the Living with the Land attraction.

Ohana

Location: Disney's Polynesian Resort
My Favorite Dish: Mesquite Grilled Turkey Skewers (prepared over an oak fire) dipped in chimichurri sauce
Thoughts: Overlooking the Seven Seas Lagoon at Disney's Polynesian Resort, the Hawaiian entertainment includes singing, ukulele playing, limbo contests and coconut races to complete the Polynesian atmosphere.

Chef Mickey's Buffet

Location: Disney's Contemporary Resort
My Favorite Dish: The fabulous sundae and dessert bar!
Thoughts: The Fab Five (Mickey, Minnie, Donals, Goofy, Pluto) greet you as you dine. Monorails zoom above through the Contemporary Resort atrium. Picture windows of Bay Lake capture attention as you wait.

Trails' End

Location: Disney's Fort Wilderness
My Favorite Dish: Breakfast! The buffet has all the country fixin's, but I love the biscuits and gravy best.
Thoughts: while this location is one table serivce credit, I suggest paying for this one out of pocket. The less-than-$20 per adult price is certainly a bargain for a Disney meal! The quiet ambiance will help you recharge your Disney-overloaded batteries.

1900 Park Fare

Location: Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa
My Favorite Dish: Chicken Marsala on the dinner buffet, and The Kid's Station
Thoughts: Laid-back dining with Cinderella, Prince Charming, Lady Tremaine, Anastasia, Drizella and The Fairy Godmother (characters subject to change).

Prolonging the Excitement of the Big Trip

It's tax season, which can only mean two things in our household. First, spring is around the corner! The extra-snowy winter this year has really contributed to our spring fever. I'm not sure I have ever been more ready to change over to warmer temperatures and sunshine! The second is that our tax refund is on its way and we can finally book our summer Disney vacation!

We are not the family that can keep secrets well. When we are excited about something we tend to tell the world! As soon as our taxes were filed, we shared the news with our kids -- it's time to start planning our vacation!! Per usual, we are all in a deep state of Disney-Fever.

So, what to do with our unbridled excitement with nearly 3 months still left until we depart? The only antidote for true Disney-Fever is, of course, a visit to see The Mouse. In the meantime, one can only treat the symptoms.

Here's our top ten ways to treat the symptoms of Disney-Fever.

10: Disney themed dinner-time conversations. We chat our mealtimes away dreaming about all that we will see and do on our vacation. My children will talk of rides and pool time at the resort, while my husband and I get giddy about seeing the joy on our children's faces as they catch a glimpse of their favorite "friends" in the parks. We each tell our favorite parts of each park and our resort, and what we are most looking forward to.

9: Movies! We pull out our extensive Disney movie collection and have a few extra family-movie nights. Our van is stocked with our favorites so the kids begin to immerse themselves in the magic of Disney long before we begin packing our bags. My husband is sure to set our DVR to record showings on TV of movies that we do not own.

8: Disney Store shopping. Our local mall has a small, yet adequate Disney store, where my children think they are part owners. We rarely purchase items, but frequent the store after church many weekends to let them play with the toys, squeeze their favorite stuffed characters, and give high-fives to the cast members. Oh, those poor, unsuspecting cast members never see my crew coming. They burst into the store with huge smiles on their faces and bound to the back to take in the entire place - dripping with the "Fever." I step back and let them infect others as my daughter belts out "Let it Go" with Idina Menzel's voice ringing through the tiny store. I collect my Disney-rabid children, and politely tell the cast members that we are planning our next Disney trip, and they give me an understanding smile and nod. I think it is part recognition, part pity.

7: Sorcerer Radio Station. I often quip to my husband that I wish my life had a soundtrack playing on little speakers hidden in the bushes everywhere I went, just like at Disney. I make this dream a reality with Sorcerer Radio. Found at live365.com, Sorcerer Radio plays all of the music from Disney parks and resorts. I turn it on and let it play throughout my day, allowing me to beckon Disney memories and plan new ones!

6: Mickey-inspired Food. Mickey pancakes are our favorite, and easy to create, but other Mickey-inspired food is fun too! We put popcorn in paper bags, and pretend its from our favorite popcorn stand in Hollywood Studios - near Toys Story Midway Mania. Mickey-shaped cookies, and ice cream sandwiches are easy to create and devour, although they are not at all as good as the parks versions! A little soft-serve ice cream in pineapple juice gives a similar, albeit sub-par, taste to our favorite Dole-Whip, and a concoction of juices sends our memories to Tusker house Restaurant's Jambo Juice.

5: We practice our Spanish. "Please stand clear of the doors. Por favor, alejado de las puertas."

4: We start a countdown chain. Most families begin their chains when the countdown to vacation time is within site on the calendar - 30 days or less. Ours is more non-traditional when it comes to this tradition. When our trip has been booked, we start the countdown. We typically book about 80 days in advance, having already booked all of our dining reservations safely ahead of schedule at 180 days, so it is not uncommon to see an 80-link chain hanging in the chandelier of our dining room. Each link has a different Disney Parks experience that we are looking forward to, so when we snip off a link each day, we reminisce and dream!

3: Hidden Mickey Hunt: My son is the best at spotting Hidden Mickey's both at Disney World, and off property. I tell you, he has pointed out Hidden Mickey's at the grocery store, arranged in the food on his plate, and even on the patterned fabric on the inside lining of my purse. To a Disney family, one need not be at The most Magical Place on Earth to experience Disney magic. You'll be surprised how they begin to pop out to you in the most mundane situations. Just this morning, my daughter and I noticed that the flowers on her jacket were 3 concentric circles - Hidden Mickey!

2: YouTube Videos. There are fantastic videos that families have loaded on YouTube. Many attractions from WDW can be experienced through these family videos. My children take turns choosing a favorite ride and cuing up the video to "ride" along via the Internet. Ah, the power of technology! I am secretly using it as a way to show them that Splash Mountain, a ride that they have not been brave enough to try, is not scary!

1: Pretend, pretend, pretend! Every dinner eaten out, or car-ride becomes an opportunity to pretend that we are on our way to Disney World. Our family drives to Disney World each year, instead of flying and we typically enjoy the journey. The drive in itself is another way to prolong the excitement! While in restaurants in our hometown, we have found ourselves telling the kids, "We only have 2 more hours until we are there!" This imagination game will send the kids into a giggle fest while we remind them of the first things we will do when we get there. Of course, it's a bit of a let down when we load up the van after lunch and head home.

There are many ways to begin planning your vacation to Disney World, and most families will find themselves in some variation of Disney-Fever once they make the decision to travel to central Florida. For my family, that planning takes on a life of its own, once the parents say that, indeed, we will be visiting Disney World. We have found that beginning the journey earlier rather than later is a great way to prolong the excitement.

My Favorite...Place at Magic Kingdom Park

Magic Kingdom Park - the crux of Walt Disney World Resort. It is no secret that for most guests, Magic Kingdom Park is the favorite of the four theme parks. I tend to agree, if for no other reason than the intense magic that is present. With it's six distinct lands - Main Street U.S.A, Adventurland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, and Tomorrowland - there are attractions that are sure to please even the most lackluster traveler.

I appreciate and enjoy each of the unique lands within Magic Kingdom Park and have a favorite location within each one, but when it comes to an overall favorite location with the park itself, Main Street U.S.A. takes the cake.

There is little to compare to the splendor and magic of entering Magic Kingdom Park. I get goosebumps simply typing the words! Walt Disney World has a knack for entrances - the "Welcome Home" greetings at the resort entrances, the one-on-one interaction with the cast members at the theme park turnstiles, the theming of the resort lobbies - and the entrance to Walt's Magic Kingdom Park is no exception. As guests pass underneath the Walt Disney Railroad Station they begin to glimpse the marvel that is Main Street U.S.A. Lined with souvenir shops, a real working barber shop, and restaurants, Main Street U.S.A is decorated in turn of the century, small-town America style. This grand entrance to Magic Kingdom Park is filled with Walt Disney history, which is the number one reason that this area of the park is my favorite. I am a sucker for Disney trivia, and this street is littered with it!

The symbolism along this American main street is great, as Main Street U.S.A. represents Magic Kingdom Park's opening credits. The names of key personnel and contributors to the park's opening are visible in the building's upper floors. Many of the storefront windows bear fictitious business names that represent a tribute to a significant individual who played a key role in the development of the park.

The buildings here use a technique called forced perspective, which allows the relatively short buildings, at only 189 feet tall, seem large scale. The second and third stories of the buildings decrease in height, leaving the buildings to appear to be larger and taller than the actually are.

It may seem strange to some that my favorite place in the entire park is a street with no thrill rides, or any rides at all for that matter! The truth is that I could plop myself along the curb and sit for hours. I get lost in the horse-drawn carts that burst forth with frolicking, singing and dancing cast members in their turn of the century garb, vendors wrangling seemingly hundreds of Mickey Mouse shaped balloons, PhotoPass photographers taking a family's first Disney World photo, the Main Street pianist tickling the ivories outside of Casey's Corner, the smell of Main Street Bakery's fresh cinnamon rolls, the Dapper Dans Barber Shop Quartet entertaining the crowds, characters meeting guests in front of the Town Square Theater, little ones getting their first haircuts at The Harmony Barber Shop, stroller wheels getting stuck in the train track along the street, and the breathtaking view of Cinderella Castle. There are tears in my eyes.

Without fail, I linger in this place a little longer each time I visit. The sheer exuberance on my children's faces as they take in the excitement of the hustle and bustle of Main Street U.S.A. is worth ten-fold the joy they get from riding Dumbo or seeing the fireworks. Main Street U.S.A, as the first glimpse of "The Most Magical Place on Earth," was designed to transport the guest into a place like no other. After a few steps into this enchanted place, I begin to hum along:

My Favorite Things

Folks ask me all the time, "What is your favorite thing at Walt Disney World?" I usually look perplexed, as though I couldn't possibly choose a FAVORITE aspect of Walt Disney World, but in truth, there are so many favorites, that it would take a long afternoon chat (preferably over a Dole Whip float) to articulate my favorite Walt Disney World list.

To that end, I present to you: My Favorite Things - Walt Disney World.

Value Resort

I supposed the best way to begin this lengthily list of posts is to start where most Disney travelers start - where should I stay? There are all types of vacationers out there, and I have found that most, if not all, are trying to maximize every dollar that is spent on said vacation. The Disney vacationer is no exception. For those who have chosen to stretch their dollar the farthest, Disney has resort options that offer a standard hotel room, with an added bonus of Disney magic.

While Disney has added the Art of Animation as a "Value Plus" resort option that I absolutely recommend for larger parties needing larger accommodations in their family suites, my favorite traditional Value Resort is Pop Century.

This resort takes guests on a time warp trip through the decades. Iconic themes from the 50's through the 90's litter the landscape of each section of the resort. Guests will revel in the discovery of each of the ten buildings as they spy Big Wheels, bowling pins, Rubik's cubes, and 8 track tapes. This resort certainly takes guests back in time.

Three pools are available for guests in the 90's section and 50's section, as well as the most popular "Hippie Dippie" pool located in the 60's section near the main lobby and food court. It is exactly what you'd expect of a hippie pool, complete with flower showers on the pool deck, and a temporary tattoo station.

Rooms at Pop Century are decorated in the style of the decade in which they are located. Each has two double beds or one king sized bed, nightstand, telephone, small table and chairs, armoire, TV, mirror, clock radio, and open closet area. A beverage cooler is also provided. The single sink vanity area has a mirror and is separate from the tub and toilet area.

Pop Century is the newer of the Value resorts, in comparison to the All-Star resorts in this category, and has less wear-and-tear that comes along with well used resorts. It is for this reason that many guests choose again and again to stay on this property. Folks who stay at Pop Century fall in love with the ambiance, and come back for the value! It is a great resort option offering value accommodations at a value price that will help stretch your dollar and make magical memories with your family.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

Of all of the questions I field from possible Disney travelers, the one that I most often hear refers to crowd levels. There are a couple of simple truths regarding Walt Disney World and the number of people inside the theme parks each day.

Truth #1: Disney is a Crowded Place

While it is true that some times of the year are less crowded than others, WDW remains a crowded place by nature. With over 17 million people visiting annually, any given park could see upwards of 75,000 people on a day during a peak season. The resort itself covers 40 square miles - roughly the size of San Francisco. While the majority of the 25,000 acres is undeveloped, that still leaves a massive amount of space to fit Disney enthusiasts all wanting to catch a glimpse of a certain Mr. Mouse.

Truth #2: You Will Have to Wait

With crowds come wait times, and simply put you will most likely experience a wait for the more popular attractions and shows. It is for this reason the Disney began the use of its FastPass system, helping guests bypass the longer wait times of the popular attractions so they can make better use of their time in the parks. While no one wants to wait a long time for an attraction, it is inevitable during most seasons. If you are visiting during a peak season, then cherish those 20 minute wait times!

Truth #3: Some Seasons are Better than Others

Disney has a pretty decent business model. They know when guests are most likely to travel, and when their theme park attendance wanes. It is for this reason that they categorize the year into "seasons." These seasons are broken along holiday weekends, summer breaks, spring & fall breaks, and festivals offered at the parks. While the actual dates vary, it is a good rule of thumb to remember that a value season is most likely to occur when most children are in school, no major holiday is pressing, and the typical traveller is at work. I typically recommend February, September, and the early weeks of December as good travel times. Of course, if you are traveling with school-aged children, this could pose a problem with teachers and administrators!

Whenever you decide to move forward in your travel planning for your family, keep in mind that a good bit of patience will be required with regards to crowds and waiting. You may be surprised and find that you are able to ride and re-ride your favorite attraction multiple times without a hiccup in wait time. I have even experienced this during the peak summer season. Prepare yourself for the inevitable, and focus on the sheer joy on your family's' faces.

We will travel to Walt Disney World in just 10 short/long days! A few things are different for us on this trip - the biggest being that now that I am a Disney Vacation Planner, I have a new perspective for Disney travel. While we are trying some new things for this trip, most of it will remain the same. We are after all creatures of habit!

Each time we plan a major Disney vacation, we try to stay at a different resort. This time we will stay at Animal kingdom Lodge, Jambo House. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to stay at this Deluxe resort! The African theme of this resort will be a change of pace for us, and we are looking forward to seeing the wildlife from our windows!

We will be driving the 16+ hour trip in ONE DAY. Yes, you read that correctly. This is due, in part to the fact that my husband is a beast, and that we have found that we can save lots of money in unneceesary hotel and food expenses if we just decide to stay in the car for the entire day. We will leave Shelbyville, KY at 2:30am and arrive to Downtown Disney around 7:00 or 8:00pm. Just in time for a quick dinner at Earl of Sandwich, and then check-in our pre-Disney hotel.

We get various looks from folks when we reveal that we like to travel this way. Lots of Questions arise - most of which we have a rehearsed answer.

Why don't you just fly?

We simply can't afford it. We travel in the summer, when airfare is at its highest. If we could find a flight for our family for less than $Gazillion, we would consider flying. While flying is the most efficient method of traveling to Disney World for most families, and cuts down on lots of "are we there yet?" whining, we just can't stomach the cost. Plus, we enjoy our time in our minivan. The double DVD players, stocked cooler, and pre-loaded playlist on the iPod keep us happy! We enjoy the stops along the way, and find time to try out different restaurants (and potty stops)!

Why so early? Wouldn't it be better to leave in the evening and drive overnight?

While driving overnight works for many families - many swear by it - but it just doesn't work for our family. At ages 3 & 5 (barely), my children are still required to sit in booster seats, and car seats with a 5-point harness. It was evident early on in our attempt at overnight driving that it was impossible for them to get comfortable in their seats to sleep. They can nap for small intervals without much incident, but requiring them to sleep in those seats just didn't work. And although my husband is a great driver, and even allows me to take the wheel when he's ready for a rest, we found ourselves very sleepy. So sleepy that we puled into a rest area, took our kids out of their seats, and all slept for an hour or more. Early morning driving gives us all rest from the night before, allows us to drive as the sun rises, and keeps us awake!

What about the kids? Don't they get bored?

Well, in a word, yes! Kids are going to get bored with anything for an extended amount of time. We build in quick stops along the way, bring snacks, toys, and MOVIES! The kids' favorite is the gifts from Mickey Mouse. A day or two before we leave, a box of wrapped gifts arrives on our front porch - gifts from Mickey Mouse! We spend the weeks leading up to our trip scouring the Dollar Store, and dollar sections of Wal-mart and Target for cheap toys and games with Disney characters. We wrap them individually for each child, and take the box with us. Every hour or so (or when the kids are becoming unruly in the back seat!) we let them open a gift. These toys hold the kids' attention just long enough to get us down the road a little farther!

Why do you arrive the night before you reservations?

While it seems like the addition of a hotel the night before our Disney reservations begin adds unnecessary expenses, we really don't feel this way. By staying at a Good Neighbor hotel (we always stay in a nearby Dountown Disney area hotel) we can begin our Disney Magic sooner! We are able to check into our Disney hotel first thing on the morning of our reservations, and while our room isn't always ready (though most of the time it is) we can get our Key to the World cards, and head straight to the parks that morning. We find that this prolongs our trip and maximizes our time!

Earl of Sandwich? Huh?

Earl of Sandwich is a restaurant located in The Marketplace at Downtown Disney. The sandwiches are exceptional, and large enough to share with our kids for a satisfying dinner. The prices are reasonable - one of the most reasonable on Disney property - and lets us enjoy some Disney magic at The Marketplace without breaking our budget the first night! If the restaurnat is overly crowded, and it's very likely, we can take the sandwiches out to a nearby curb, or bench to eat. My husband orders "The Full Montagu" and I get the club. Again...creatures of habit!

However your family chooses to travel to Walt Disney World, I hope you do it soon! Don't wait until the kids "get big enough" or "we have enough money to do it right." There are millions of ways to put together a Disney vacation - and no matter which way you do it, it will be memorable and worth it!

At Last!

As most of you know, my passion has been planning magical Disney vacations, and had it not had the potential to squash my parents' hopes for my future, I would have announced my dream of becoming a travel agent right out of high school. However, I did the responsible thing and attended college, received my bachelor's degree, began teaching in the public school system, earned a masters degree, and set off on a journey of tenured bliss.

The Fever

Around this time of year at my house, at least one of my family members comes down with a bad case of what we call "The Fever." They are anxious, lack focus, drift from one thought to another, and act in ways that seem irrational. Their speech becomes littered with odd phrases, their eating habits change, as do their entertainment selections. The most dangerous aspect of having "The Fever" is that it can be easily - sometimes instantaneously - transferred to others who are susceptible to it. Once you come down with this disease, it is likely that it will recur at least once a year.

The Fever has hit our house hard this week. It seems that all four of us have a touch of Disney Fever.
While it is no secret that I live my life in constant affliction of some version of Disney Fever, the other members of our family have recently shown signs of developing it as well. Let me preface my husband's affliction by telling you that just a few weeks ago, after looking over our finances and household budget, declared that we would not be taking a Disney trip this summer as we had wished. But as we drove to church just last Sunday he said, "You know, this will be the last trip Jace will take before he starts school." This declaration has prompted our two littles into Disney Fever frenzy. They talk non-stop of the adventures they will have on their next visit to WDW.

So, we have Disney Fever, and aren't 100% sure we can afford to go this summer. While I am anxious about that possibility, I will not lose heart! In the meantime, here are some great ways to settle a Disney Fever rampage (or fuel the fire even more!)

Watch Disney Planning videos - ours is permanently lodged in our van's DVD player, and the kids get lost in dreamland as the host describes every possible option at WDW. The look on their faces in the rear-view mirror is priceless!
Re-create menu options from WDW - even if it's not remotely the same, this is a great way to remember those wonderful meals from The World! I plan to serve my BBQ sandwishes Sunday evening billed as Whispering Canyon Cafe's Canyon Skillet!
Play Dress-up - When we dress-up as their favorite Disney characters, we pretend that they are the real characters at WDW - complete with autograph signing!
Visit the WDW attractions on YouTube - we have ridden The Pirates of the Caribbean ten times this week!
Disney-themed breakfast - Mickey pancakes require nothing more than quick placement of three dollops of batter!
Fold your towel into an animal - Disney Mousekeepers are fantasitic at creating magic with a clean towel, and you can be too!
Fill up that Resort Travel mug! If your refillable mugs are like ours, the logo is beginning to wear away from multiple washings, but the memories tied to them are wonderful!
Visit the Disney Store - While it's not the same, it is similar, and the cast members try to make everyone welcome!
Create edible version of your favorite attractions - The Edible Jungle Cruise (below) just might get your family ready for the adventures in the Jungle!

Saving Money at The World - Accommodations

Of all the questions people ask me about planning their Disney vacation the one I get the most is, "How can I save money?" While this sounds like a completely reasonable question to ask, as most people I know are trying to maximize their dollar -- the sad fact is that people think that a Disney trip has to break the bank, and that just isn't so. Believe me, my husband and I are both public school teachers, and if our meager salaraies can support a Disney vacation every two years or so, then the typical American can afford one too!

One Suggestion for getting the biggest bang for your Disney buck:

Visit during a Value Season

WDW Resorts rates dip and dive throughout the calendar year. These "seasons" dictate the resort rate - but NOT the ticket prices (ticket prices are set for a specific time frame; usually a calendar year). The best way to save money on accommodations is to book during a value season. These dates are the ones during time windows where schools are in session, and few families are able to travel to WDW. While it is difficult for most families to lock in a value season rate, other seasons are available. The key is to avoid Peak Seasons and Holiday rates.

Even purchasing a day or two fewer theme park tickets for your stay and spending a day or two at Downtown Disney or nearby outlet malls makes for a great way to save some money!

Disney Destination Specialist?

I've been called many things in my life, but one that ranks near the top in the excitement factor, sans the obvious mother and wife, is a Disney Destination Specialist. I would have to agree that I have more Disney knowledge than most, and as we all know -- this is okay with me! I know I am a dork when it comes to WDW and perhaps it is for this reason that I am most excited about my next venture.

My husband pokes fun at me for my Disney vacation planning. Now, I'm not talking about the trips that we will actually take, those are just in alternating summers. Specifically, I am referring to the WDW vacations that are planned whenever I get "The Fever." At any given moment, I may have 2-5 Disney vacation offers saved. In fact, at this moment, I even have dining reservations for hard-to-reserve restaurants at WDW for a future dream vacation that we likely will not take! Deep in my heart, I know that these trips will never come to fruition. But planning Disney Vacations is a great pastime! Perhaps I've even helped you plan one of yours!

It is for this reason that I have applied to be a "Magic Maker" with Off to Neverland Travel. This position would basically pay me commission for doing what I do already - plan Disney vacations. So...how does this help the general WDW-seeking traveller?

Using a Disney Specialist, or any travel agent for that matter, is a sweet deal for any traveller. This is especially true of the traveller with limited knowledge of the destination. By partnering with a Disney Specialist, or "Magic Maker", many of the questions that seem to have you stuck in your travel preparations are answered for you.

Disney Prayers

My son's bedtime routine involves much of the same activities as most 4 year olds across the world. He brushes his teeth, hugs everyone goodnight, climbs into bed for a story, and finishes with prayer time. Let me tell you -- my child says GREAT prayers. Amazing even. His prayers could be used as illustrations for sermons, or teaching points for seminary professions. Okay, I won't go that far, but seriously, the boy can pray.

For the last several nights my little strawberry blonde has thanked God for his family, asked the Holy Spirit to help him be obedient, and has made this special request:

"God, please let us go to Disney World for my five birthday."

Sweet? Of course? Every mother loves to hear the heartfelt prayers of her children. This momma's heart is touched even more when Disney magic shows up in them!

Since I am home in bed -- sick with a terrible cough/cold/bronchitis (the doctor will confirm later) -- I have decided to plan a "Five Birthday" trip for my son. Although the trip won't necessarily fall on his birthday, as my husband will more than likely still be in school, a WDW trip at the end of June is not out of the question.

The possibilities are limitless -- well, not exactly limitless, we do survive on a two-teacher income -- so I will be putting together probably a dozen packages to compare resorts, restaurants, dining plans, etc. This is my way of maximizing my sick day - since I feel too lousy to do much else.

Earlier today I was rummaging through my wallet when a co-worker noticed my Disney tickets stored neatly away. When she endearingly remarked that I had better keep those safe, it got me thinking about the various tickets that Disney has to offer! I am quite aware that this solidifies my dorkiness... there is no need to point this out to me the next time we speak.

Walt Disney World offers tickets that can be modified by opting to add on certain features, and all tickets require

Magic Your Way

The base ticket, known as Magic Your Way tickets, are just what you'd think - a base ticket. Purchasing a Magic Your Way Ticket allows you to enter one theme park for one day. You are allowed to leave the park, and return to the same park on the same day, however.

Park-Hopper

If your family decides that they would like to visit more than one Disney theme park in one day -- perhaps visit Animal Kingdom in the morning while the animals are more active, then visit Magic Kingdom in the afternoon for thrill rides, and finish the evening at Hollywood Studios for Fantasmic! -- then you could add the Park Hopper option to your ticket.

If you choose to add this option, you will be able to come and go as you please through all four of the parks at WDW on the same day. The cost for the Park-Hopper option is an additional $35.00 for a one-day ticket, and $55.00 for 2-10 day tickets.

My opinion...I know you want to hear it...is to ALWAYS add the Park-Hopper option to your ticket if your itinerary allows it (plan for more than one day!). For the extra $55 - because you should spend more than one day at Disney! - you get a built-in pass to relax. With the added freedom to come and go as we wish, I usually find that we are not as crazed to accomplish everything in one fail swoop. We typically hit the parks hard in the early morning, and return to our rooms for a midday rest. Then strike back to a different park in the evening. Adding the Park-Hopper option also allows you more freedom with dining options. You won't have to be as miticulous in your dinner reservations if you have the ability to visit each park as often as you like each day. You could essentially (and I've done it) have breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a diiferent WDW park!

Water Park Fun and More

If you are seeking more than theme parks, you may enjoy adding the Water Park Fun and More option to your base ticket. With this add-on option, you gain admission to your choice of Blizzard Beach water park, Typhoon Lagoon water park, Disney Quest, a round of golf at Oak Trail Golf Course, or Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The number of visits depends on the length of your ticket, i.e. a one-day ticket allows 2 visits to one of the options mentioned, a 10-day ticket allows for 10 visits. The cost for this add-on is $55.00 per ticket. When combined with the Park-Hopper option, the rate is $110.00 per ticket.

My husband and I have added this option only once while staying at WDW, and it was worth it for that visit. Since having small children, we have not seen the need for adding this option as the theme parks are enough entertainment for our family. We did find Disney Quest to be a very entertaining, and enjoyed touring the Wide World of Sports Complex - it was nearly empty when we visited, save for a high school wrestling tournament that was being held at the facility.

No Expiration

The Magic Your Way base tickets (and any added options ) expire 14 days after their first use. If you choose to add the no expiration option, you are free to come back and use any remaining tickets at any time. These tickets NEVER expire. I recently heard of a gentleman who just returned to WDW to use his ticket from the late 1970's. (Now there's a real Disney Dork!) The cost for this feature depends on the number of days of your tickets and ranges from $25 for a 2-day ticket, to $225 for a 10-day ticket.

We have contemplated purchasing the No Expiration option to actually save some money on our Disney tickets. If planned correctly, you could purchase tickets for two trips at WDW in one purchase (assuming you had that much extra cash on hand...have I mentioned that my husband and I are BOTH teachers?). The cost of Disney tickets decline as you add more days to the ticket. A 5-day adult base ticket costs $270, yet you can buy a 10-day pass for $310. By adding the No Expiration option, you actually save a tiny fraction (like $5), but you will also have stored up tickets for a family vacation down the road -- and Disney is notorious for raising their prices each year.

Annual Pass

Perhaps you come down with a terrible case of Disney Fever more than once a year and plan to visit WDW when the feeling strikes. Purchasing an annual pass permits one year of unlimited admission to all four major theme parks, along with free parking. The cost for a first time adult annual pass purchase is $560, and can be renewed for $510.

With the options that Disney has for creating a truly magical experience at the theme parks (and more!) your family should be able to find an option that works best for you! And for the record, the 3 tickets stored in my wallet are Magic Your Way Base Tickets. No added options. Used April 2011. Just another testament to the Disney Dork -- Keeping them in a place I'll see them often so I can dream about our next visit.

If You Only Have ONE DAY

In the off chance that you stumble upon Walt Disney World, and find yourself with a ticket to ONE PARK for ONE DAY, what should you do? This is a situation in which I would celebrate and mourn at the same time. A full day immersed in The World, yet only one day! Here's how I would (and have) attack that day.

1. Pick Your Park
This part of the planning is a no-brainer. If you only have one day in one park - no park-hopping option, then the answer is clear... go to The Magic Kingdom! The oldest of the four Disney Parks, Magic Kingdom is perhaps the most magical, especially for children. The true essence of Disney Magic is experienced simply by entering Magic Kingdom.

This original park, opened in 1971, has stood the test of time with changing cultures, social climate, and technology which often leaves theme parks outdated and obsolete. Magic Kingdom remains the most visited theme park, drawing thousands of visitors each year. I have often said that I would be satisfied to grab a piece of sidewalk on Main Street USA and just sit and enjoy the splendor that is the Magic Kingdom. This park has stayed true to the original vision of Uncle Walt -- a place where families can gather in a clean and safe place to enjoy the time they spend together. This park transports visitors back to their childhood, or the childhood they had wished they had!

2. Select Must Do Attractions
In order to effectively visit a park at WDW, and get the most bang for your buck, you will have to plan, plan, plan! I always start with a list of everything I want to do while I'm there - this is true regardless how many days you have in each park. Short of quitting my job and relocating my family to Lake Buena Vista, Florida, there will never be enough time to experience everything in one trip. This is especially true with a one park/one day pass. I like to plan my must-do's in each land -- this helps me later as I prioritize and make a plan of attack.

For the Magic Kingdom, my "To-Do" list looks something like this:

Main Street USA:

If line is short - Visit Mickey at the Main Street Theater (if wait time is under 15 minutes)
Get PhotoPass picture in front of Cinderella Castle (at least twice along the street)
Watch whomever is performing (maybe The Dapper Dans Barbershop Quartet)
Hurry PAST the shops -- no time to stop, order online later!

Tomorrowland

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin (get fastpass for later, ride now if line is under 15 mins)
Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor
Carousel of Progress
Tomorrowland Indy Speedway
Space Mountain (no my fav, but just mentioning that it's here)

Fantasyland:
(Keep in mind that Mickey's Toontown Fair is closed, and the new Fantasyland will open Fall 2012. Guests will be able to visit princesses in their own themed attractions. Dance with Cinderella, celebrate Aurora's birthday and perform with Belle in Beast's Castle, which will also include a new themed restaurant. Dumbo the FLying Elephant will be larger and a Little Mermaid attraction will be added. Most of Toontown will be removed and Mickey and Minnie will be relocated to the front of the park.)

Pirates of the Caribbean

3. Shows & Parades

Depending on the time you are visiting, parades, shows and Fireworks have varying schedules. Check the times of your visit. We like to use the Share a Dream Come True parade (usually around 3:00) for our rest time. The kids can side in the stroller, and we can rest on the sidewalk while the parade comes through. We have no favorite place to see any parade -- especially if we are only at one park on one day. We plan on opening and closing the park...so we are not in any hurry to beat crowds at any point in the day! Most crowds start to head out of the park following the parades, so this is a valuable time to revisit any attractions that were too crowded earlier!

4. Prioritize & Make a Route

This is the final step in ensuring that you visit the really important places. Decide which attractions that you may be willing to part with -- the Enchanted Tiki Room recently reopened with changes that restore the attraction to its orginal 1971 version. I would not miss the opportunity to see the "Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room" from my childhood!

Now get a park map (WDW will mail you FREE maps - see www.disneyparks.com to order) and plan your route. Most visitors head for the bigger attractions early -- don't expect to ride space mountain or Splash mountain right away unless you want to waste your day in line -- so visit the lesser attractions first, and get fastpasses for the bigger rides. Be prepared, and willing, to cross lands throughout the day. Getting a fastpass for a ride in Adventureland, then returning to Fantasyland is a great idea!

No matter how long you have in WDW, the visit will be magical!

Stash Your Stuff

Heading to The World and have more stuff than you'd like to tote around with you all day? Let's face it, as well-meaning as we may be, the gear we bring with us can tie us down! As if waiting in line for longer than 15 minutes to ride The Jungle Cruise, or staking out prime real estate for the 3:00 parade isn't enough with our little ones in tow, we weigh ourselves down with stuff we really only need once during the day!

I have several ideas when it comes to dealing with stuff, but for this blog, I'll stick to some information about locker rentals at WDW (just for you Missy!).

Lockers can really save you at WDW. They make for a great place to stash rain gear that you may need later in the day (an you will!), or to store jackets or souvenirs (unless you are staying on property, in which case, they will have the items sent to your room for you!).

All four parks share the same policy regarding locker rental:

Large Lockers: $9.00/day plus $5.00 key deposit (refunded when key is returned).
Small Lockers: $7.00/day plus $5.00 key deposit (refunded when key is returned).
You may access key operated lockers as often as you want.
You must return your key within an hour of park closing.

If you plan to visit more than one park on the same day, you need not pay additional rental fees. Simply return the key for your $5.00 refund and get a receipt. Present the receipt to the next theme park, pay another $5.00 deposit and you will have a locker for the remainder of the day. May be a hassle, much like renting strollers at WDW, but worth it if you want to free yourself from extra items.

Lockers are located in various areas throughout the parks and offer various sizes:
Large Locker dimensions: 17"H x 12"W x 16" Deep
Small Locker dimensions: Small Lockers: 11"H x 9" W x 22" Deep
Luggage Locker dimensions: 23"H x 16"W x 29" Deep
Extra Small Locker dimensions: 4"H x 3"W x 5" Deep

40th Anniversary Celebration

Walt Disney World is turning 40 on October 1st! If Mr. Disney could see us now, I believe that he would nod his head and smile, knowing that his vision of Progress, USA has been achieved ten fold. In true Disney fashion, many events are planned for this one-of-a-kind celebration, although Disney has been tight-lipped about them! Below are some of the unconfirmed details that I have been able to dig up.

The park will be open from 9am to midnight.

These events, while painstakingly planned I'm sure, kind of feel like a bummer to me. GIven the choice between traveling this fall versus next fall, I would certainly go in 2012. Sure, the 40th anniversary is a milestone for WDW, and there are likely other events and celebrations planned (during most milestone anniversaries, WDW gives visitors commemorative pins), but I am fully convinced that the unveiling of the new Fantasyland will prove to be a much more grandiose experience! If you have a trip currently planned (Thompson family) I trust that the 40th anniversary celebrations will provide an extra dose of Disney Magic and will enhance your vacation. Conversely, if you are saving your pennies for a WDW vacation, keep saving until next fall when you will be able to visit a whole new land of Disney and participate in celebrations on a grander scale!

The DVC Advantage?

Yesterday evening a good friend, and fellow Disney fan, stopped by for a brief moment. Our conversation quickly turned to his upcoming Disney trip and we were well on our way to a full fledged Disney Dork moment, when someone brought up the idea of DVC (Disney Vacation Club).

In theory, becoming a member of the Disney Vacation Club has tremendous perks for a Disney enthusiast like me. DVC is Disney's answer to the timeshare phenomenon, and their concept is one of the fastest growing in the timeshare industry. DVC members purchase "points" which can be used to stay at any of the Disney Vacation Club Resorts. These resorts are markedly nicer than the typical Walt Disney World Resort options. These resorts include: Animal Kingdom Villas, Bay Lake Tower, Beach Club Villas, Boardwalk Villas, Old Key West Resort, Treehouse Villas, Wilderness Lodge Villas, and Saratoga Springs Report & Spa. Points can also be used for a Disney Cruise or at Disneyland Resort stays. Other hotels (over 500) around the world are also included in the DVC package, and are typically top-of-the-line resorts in fabulous locations.

DVC allows more flexibility than other timeshare companies, and the cast members who specialize in the sale of DVC are quick to point out this fact. Members can use their DVC points at anytime throughout the year and the accommodations can be chosen based upon your liking. But the truth is the most cost-effective way to use DVC points is at the above mentioned resorts. It is for this reason, that DVC membership is a WASTE of money for most families, even Disney addicts like myself, unless you plan to stay at a DVC resort at least every other year.

It is this truth that had my friend and I nearly arguing with an imaginary DVC agent in my kitchen, having both been subjected to their pleas for membership. (I once attended an online seminar for DVC that resulted in me disconnecting early, and accepting the free mouse pad, leather-bound portfolio, and DVC mouse ears.) We deduced that the two of us, me with my family of 4, and he with his family of 5, visit Disney World approximately every other year, and spend between $2,000.00 & $4,000.00 per trip. If we put the minimum monthly payment that DVC allows (approx $195.00) we would accrue $2340.00 by the year's end. So....how does this compare to DVC? Let's run some numbers (this fact will no doubt make my husband laugh, as he knows very well, I'm not a mathematician!).

The initial cost of joining DVC is a huge investment. Although recently, DVC has been offering incentives for new members that are unbelievable, however without these incentives the current minimum of 160 points casts approximately $19,200 plus closing costs. There are also substantial annual dues and maintenance fees. The current minimum is around $253 per year for 160 points. Another hidden truth of DVC is that the points are not good forever. While you can bank your points each year, they do have an expiration date. They expire on January 31st of 2042, 2054, 2057 or 2060 depending on which resort you buy into.

I don't want to sound like a huge Debbie-Downer with DVC, so I will point out that there are some perks that almost make me want to join.

Simply put, joining DVC sounds like a glamorous way to experience Disney, and it is! But with that glamour, comes a glamorous cost. It is likely not a financially responsible decision for your family unless you have the upfront cost in the bank. In much the same way financial advisers would advise against financing a vacation on a credit card, I would imagine that joining DVC, thus financing a pre-paid Disney vacation, would fall into the same category. The numbers speak for themselves:

Your dues for 160 points at Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas (2011): $802 (this ignores the purchase price of $19,200 and $253 closing costs)*

If you rented points from an owner to stay in an Animal Kingdom Villas value studio unit for June 10-16, 2012 at $11 a point, it would cost you $880, savanna view: $1287*

Maybe you'd be just as happy staying in the least expensive Disney Deluxe hotel room. If you stayed at Wilderness Lodge during the same dates as above, 6 nights would cost you $2233. *

If you paid the full "rack rate" charged by Disney to stay in a Saratoga Springs studio for 6 nights, it would cost you $2396.*

Long story short? Stay clear of DVC! And you'll save yourself the drama of arguing with a fictitious DVC agent in my kitchen, making a case for how to best save for future Disney World vacations!

The Disney Store: The Dork's Perspective

My family frequents our local mall every couple of weeks, mostly to walk around and let our children blow off steam. It is a pastime that we all enjoy -- mostly. How does this relate to a blog devoted solely to Walt Disney World? Well, this would be a true Disney Dork confession, one that my husband would again drop his head to his hands in embarrassment. The mall has a Disney Store!

This feature is unsurpassed with all the other elements that the mall has to offer. It is a store where we seldom make purchases, but ALWAYS visit. My children actually believe for a small moment that they are back in the magical world of Disney World. In their eyes, the other areas of the mall - hallways, bathrooms, department stores, coffee shops, photography studios and boutiques -- are all akin to the atmosphere of Downtown Disney. Places that are fun to be, and that their parents enjoy, but don't matter much to them (except for when the DJ happens to be on stage leading the crowd in new dance crazes and handing out Mickey Mouse stickers). The Disney Store for them is like entering into The World of Disney Store in Downtown Disney. While these two stores are drastically different -- The World of Disney is Disney's largest retail space -- to my children any store with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in the window is a Disney World replica.

The Disney Store IS the mall for my kids. In fact, when we mention that we might do a little shopping, my son and daughter both will assume their excited faces and squeal with delight, "We're going to The Mickey Mall!"

On our last trip to "The Mickey Mall" my son took off as soon as he saw the place, and My daughter actually ran in and hugged the cast member who was greeting guests. I, of course, in true Disney Dork fashion was parking the stroller in my unofficial reserved stroller parking space near the front of the store (Hey, if it happens at the real Disney World, it should happen at The Disney Store). The kids moved from toy to toy, playing with anything in their reach. They hugged EVERY "friend" in the back of the store, nearly squeezing their 2 for $25.00 stuffing out. And we just let them. Whether the store is full of shoppers or deserted, as it was this particular evening, the magical look on my children's faces is irreplaceable, lest we were actually at Disney World.

Following the suggestion of the sweet lady that hugged my child back as she ran to her with open arms and excitement written on her face, exclaiming, "She's my favorite one all day!" we began a new tradition of visiting the Mickey Mall. We did what all pretend Disney World travelers should do: we rode a ride. My husband coaxed the kids out of the store (where we purchased nothing) by allowing them to ride up and down the escalator that stands just outside the doors of The Disney Store. They were elated. It was the perfect ending to their pretend Disney World trip, and mine too.

WDW for Mommies

A friend of mine recently asked me about nursing a baby while at Disney World. I must admit, as a self-proclaimed Disney Dork, I was so proud that she was willing to take her infant to WDW, and was really trying to find a place of solitude in which to feed her. Most of the people who seek my advice when planning trips to WDW have children who are at least 2 or three years old. But the majority of the novice Disney planners won't even breathe the words Disney World until their children are "old enough to appreciate it." So many people believe that they can't go to Disney World until their children reach a certain "magical" age. This couldn't be further from the truth! Disney World can be a wonderful trip with children at any age! Disney makes accommodations for everyone! From changing tables to wheelchairs, Disney can make any age magical!

Both of my children took their first trip to The World following their first birthday. While it is true that they will likely not remember this first trip to Disney World, the looks on their faces was incredible! Sure, they probably won't remember the first time they saw Mr. Mouse himself strolling down the pavement at Magic Kingdom, but I will never forget the look of admiration, wonder, and pure MAGIC on their faces! My son threw both arms in the air when he saw the sign as we entered into the Magic Kingdom. He had just turned one, and knew that he was in the most magical place on Earth!

Entering the Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney world is designed for children of all ages, so it goes without saying that they have made great accommodations to families with smaller children. Each park is equipped with Baby Care Centers at no additional charge. These centers have everything a mother might need for her young children. I have found that these are the quietest places at WDW, and provide much needed shade and rest for tired families with small children! They are often difficult to find, unless you are really looking hard for them! I wanted to be sure to point out where they are located in each park, and the perks that each provides.

Magic Kingdom
The Baby Care Center at MK is near the First Aid Station near the front of the park, just at the end of Main Street USA. There are four rooms: a waiting room with a sofa & chair; a kitchen with a microwave, sink & counter space; a private nursing room, which can accommodate up to 4 mothers, with rockers, and electrical outlets for breast pumps; a changing room with 5 changing tables, and a restroom. There are highchairs in the feeding area, with room for the rest of the family while baby gets his meal.

There are also items for sale in the kitchen area. This was a great thing for us on our last trip, when we forgot our youngest child's pacifier! A quick run to the Baby Care Center, and for a reasonable price (a Disney irregularity!), my husband purchased a new "nay-nay" and we were set!

Epcot
This baby Care Center is much larger than other centers at WDW. It is located near Test Track and it's size makes for a great rest haven for children of all ages while at Epcot. It has the same rooms as found in other Baby Care Centers, but also provides a playroom with toys, books, and coloring pages. At this Baby Care Center, you could easily find yourself staying for a while, away from the noise of the other guests! I find that most of Epcot is relaxing, and nice places to rest abound throughout the park as well.

Hollywood Studios
The Baby Care Center at Hollywood Studios is located near the main entrance. This is a very small center with a main room with a television, sink, and microwave. The changing area has 2 changing tables, and children's restroom. There are two booths for nursing mothers and their children, and are not completely private. Items cannot be purchased at this baby Care Center, but are available at a nearby gift shop. In my opinion, this center was poorly planned, but works in a pinch with a screaming, hungry baby!

Animal Kingdom
You'll find this BCC right before the bridge into Africa near the Tree of Life. It is quite large, and you can even bring your stroller into the building, while the other centers require stroller parking outside. Although there are fewer rooms (only 3), more space is offered than other Baby Care Centers. The entry room sells Disney merchandise and other necessities. The front room has a television, nice seating that lines the walls, and a children's table and chairs. The back area has ample space for feeding and changing baby with several highchairs and changing tables available, along with a microwave, sink, and two private nursing rooms. This BCC provides a great place to rest and take care of baby's needs in a quiet atmosphere.

Overall, the Baby Care Centers at WDW provide a nice rest haven for weary parents and young children. My last several trips have been with children under the age of 3, and I have visited these Baby Care Centers for feeding, purchasing items, and air-conditioning! I must also say that to enter these centers, one need not have a baby in hand. These centers are very well maintained and are very clean. I opt for the centers as often as I can for restroom breaks, and to refill water bottles in the kitchen sinks. I couldn't stomach the water fountains as bottle refilling stations! Moreover I would urge those who think that their children just aren't old enough to enjoy Disney, that they will have more magical moments that the adults on the trip. You just can't replace the memories made at Disney World. The Magic of Disney encircles us all!

Disney Doctor Visit

This morning I took my daughter to her 2-year-old well check at the pediatrician's office. There were the usual activities that are associated with this sometimes monotonous trip: We paid our co-pay, I chased her around the sick-patient waiting room trying to politely, in front of other waiting families, inform her that she was WELL, and did not need to be playing with the germ infested toys in this particular waiting room. We settled into the well-patient waiting room while she played (nicely, thank Heavens!) with the other children who were also waiting for their finger pricks, vaccines, and "say ahhh"s.

Finally our name was called and we went to the nurse's station to get her height, weight and temperature checked before being taken to the examination room. All seemingly normal activities for any parent and child on any given day of the year. But, least we forget, I am a Disney Dork and this spills into all areas of my life, even my parenting.

The nurse reported my daughter's weight and temperature, then had her stand with her back against the wall to measure her height. When the report came back that she was exactly 36 inches, a smile spread across my face. Now, this is not the smile that most parents smile when their child reaches a milestone of achievement. I mean, what kind of parent holds a silent celebration in the corner of the nurse's station at the news of her child reaching 3-feet? The answer, of course, is obvious.

My child is only 2 inches away from the height requirement to ride Kali River Rapids at Disney's Animal Kingdom, a ride we have avoided altogether since bringing children to "The World" with us. By the time of our next trip to Disney World (likely Summer 2012) she may very well have reached this height requirement and we will be able to ride Kali River Rapids for the first time since having children in 2007.

Before we had children, and were visiting Walt Disney World, we learned many tricks to help save money and maximize our dollar regarding food in "The World." Once the kids came along, it was obvious that the tricks we had mastered were no longer an effective practice. While some things are still a good idea, such as sharing entrees, and bringing our own water bottles, many just didn't cut it anymore! We now always purchase the Basic Dining Plan and make it s t r e t c h throughout our stay (another post for another day!).

My WDW Non-Negotiable WDW - Volume 1

Over the years of visiting WDW, several non-negotiables have emerged. These must-haves are no longer discussed during the planing stages of an upcoming trip. My husband knows that I will not budge on these topics, and he is usually in agreement - which is very helpful in keeping the peace in a Disney Dork's household!

A few of our must haves and why they have made our non-negotiable list:

#1 -- Stay on Property

We will ALWAYS stay on Walt Disney World Resort property if we have any say in the matter. Now, this usually requires that our wallet is a little fatter than usual, thus we must save up for a resort stay. We have stayed off-property several times, and it is okay for a shorter WDW trip, or if we intend to do other activities during our stay. There are many very nice properties on which we have stayed, and have enjoyed them very much, but the Disney magic is definitely lost. If our intention is to immerse ourselves in the magic of Disney, we will always choose to stay in one of the WDW resorts.
As a side note, we also have a sub-non-negotiable here. We prefer to stay in a moderate resort over the value resorts. Again, this option requires financial saving, so if we are planning a true Disney experience, we will always choose to stay in a moderate resort or better.

#2 -- Bring Our Own Stroller
Yes, it is true that WDW will rent strollers to guests at every park on property, but we have chosen to leave this particular piece of Disney Heaven to others. Single strollers can be rented each day for $15, and doubles for $31. Guests can choose to opt for a length of stay charge, and pay $13-27 per day.

Some people adore the strollers at WDW. In my opinion, these are the families who think that they can skirt by without bringing their stroller for their child/children. They have entered the park with no saving rest haven for a weary child, increasingly heavy backpack, gift store purchases, and Dumbo-sized souvenir mug. These individuals welcome the rented stroller - no matter the cost! In all reality, the strollers at WDW are hard molded plastic tripods. They do not recline, and have a small canopy to offer some shade from the blazing Central Florida sunshine.

Others argue that carting a stroller around the resort property is a pain. While boarding and riding the buses while toting a stroller is a true nuisance, it is akin to standing in line with Disney-level excited young children, while waiting to rent a stroller before the daily dose of Disney magic can begin - at EACH PARK. Herein brings up another non-negotiable regarding Disney Transportation, which I will save for later. Another drawback to stroller rental is that it is only offered at the parks. If you are visiting Downtown Disney or Resorts, you are simply out-of-luck! These drawbacks are not worth the cost of renting a stroller in my opinion.

For my family, it is important to have a comfortable stroller for my children, and space for our stuff. Regardless of the stroller we bring -- Our Chicco umbrella stroller or Baby Trend Sit and Stand Deluxe -- it will always be ours!

#3 -- Buy a AAA Diamond Parking Pass -- & Use It!
For many years we prided ourselves on being Disney Transportation folks. We loved the ease of using the buses on Disney property, and appreciated the pickup at the airport, to and from Port Canveral on our Disney cruise, and the short waits at the bus stops. Then...we had children!
Once the first child came along, we found that riding the buses were more of a hassle than we had previously thought. The short wait times, we realized, were really more like 20 minutes or more at each bus stop, which we ALL know is an eternity with a child in any state of Disney Euphoria or Distress. The ease of utilizing the buses decreased as soon as we brought our stroller with us (see above). With our Chicco umbrella stroller, we found we could semi-easily juggle it and a baby while squeezed on the over-crowded buses. But when baby #2 came along, it was nearly impossible to ride the buses with two little ones and our double stroller (our first trip as a family of 4 was with children ages 3 and 24 months).

It is my opinion that the Disney Transportation System is a great idea in theory, and was even a great system at its birth. Walt Disney World Resort has spent a lot of time and effort advertising said system to it's guests and encourages everyone staying and playing on property to utilize it's internal buses. While it is a dream for drivers in cutting down on the traffic backup that can happen on the WDW property, it has grown into a huge mess. So many people clog the buses, and there just aren't enough butt spaces for every guest. Great idea...needs some improvement.
Our last two trips, we resolved to use the Disney Transportation System as little as possible (we tried once). We purchased a Diamond Parking Pass from Ebay for a very low price and were able to park very near the entrances of each theme park. Given that we were staying on property, we were not charged the $14 parking fee. By parking in the diamond parking lot we were able to bypass the long traffic lines to the regular lots, and in some circumstances (Epcot) we were even closer to the entrance than the buses! We threw our Sit and Stand stroller into the back of our van, and drove to the front of the parking lots, and were into the parks in a fraction of the time. These parking spaces were especially welcome when we headed home at the end of each day at the parks. We NEVER had to wait on a bus, we NEVER had to break down our stroller, we NEVER had to share a seat with a stranger, we NEVER had to endure dirty-looks from others at the behavior of our children as they rode the long bus route back to the room. Get a AAA Parking Pass -- it will change your mind about Disney Transportation.

So many in fact, that my husband rolls his eyes when I begin to count on my fingers (and toes) and recall each trip with vivid memory. Given the opportunity to talk with others, the conversation inevitably meanders to the topic of family travel and pastimes, in which case, someone will typically ask, "Have you ever taken a trip to Disneyland?" My husband, whom I must add is a delightful man, knows that this is his cue to find a comfy seat, or begin to plan is exit route. He knows what my unsuspecting conversationist does not....this could take a while. His question has just unleashed a fury of information he may or may not welcome.

My rebuttal question to this is always, "Do you mean Disneyland or Walt Disney World?" The answer to this helps to guide the remaining conversation with the poor individual who didn't know he was looking into the eyes of a self-proclaimed Disney Dork. How could he possibly have known that I would most likely rattle on for a good length of time on information he didn't ask for regarding planning for, getting to, and enjoying time spent at Disney World. When the answer comes back as, "What do you mean? Aren't they the same?" I know I've just been given the green light to teach a great lesson on all things Disney.

Once I have established that we are, in fact, talking about Walt Disney World, the resort that began in 1971 with The Magic Kingdom, I look around to ensure that my husband realizes what has just occurred, and I begin my dork-filled rant.

It is mostly welcomed by folks I come into contact with. Many have heard that I know a thing or two about planning a trip to the most "magical place on Earth" and stop by for advice on their upcoming trip. On average I help to plan 4 or 5 trips to Disney World each year for friends, relatives and acquaintances. Mind you, I am NOT a travel agent, nor do I know absolutely all there is to know about WDW. I'm just a dork who loves to talk and plan Disney.

Over the years I have developed a fine art to Disney planning, and have also created my ideas of the perfect trip with do's and don'ts. It is my intention to share those with you through this blog. I hope that you will find it useful, humorous and informative. This blog will give you the benefit of my Disney knowledge, without the feeling of being cornered into a conversation you can't get out of!
