Pat Healy fails post-fight drug test; Costs him $130,000

UFC new comer Pat Healy made a major statement in his Octagon debut as he dismantled Jim Miller at UFC 159. Healy also took home two "Fight of the Night" awards winning the "Submission of the Night" and "Fight of the Night". The victory, along with both awards, swelled Healy's bank account by a cool $130,000. Now because of a failed post-fight drug test Healy now will have to pay back the entire amount he was paid as well as having the victory overturned to a no-contest.

Healy failed the drug test by testing positive for marijuana. A drug that is legal in 2 states and gaining legal ground fast throughout the rest of the United States.

Healy crossed over into the UFC with a 7-1 record in Strikeforce. With his victory over Miller in such dominating fashion many heads were turning his way. This bump in the road is a wake up call for this young man. It is either step up and compete in the Major league, or smoke the ganja and stay in the B leagues.

Healy, for his part, knows what he did and acknowledges the mistake as he made evident in his Twitter post,

Thanks everyone for their support, made a huge mistake and gotta pay for it.

— Patrick Healy (@BamBamHealy) May 15, 2013

That certainly is a huge mistake and he will feel that in his pocket with out a shadow of a doubt. Healy will now look to get back into the Octagon as soon as possible after serving his 90 day suspension. Hopefully this time he will be free of the sticky icky.

On The Ropes With Isabel Carreras: Women In Motion

UFC 157 was the night that women’s MMA was waiting for when Rhonda Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche launched female fighters into the mainstream of the MMA world. Event by event, the women are making their way up into the fight community fan base full force. UFC then had their second women’s bout at the Ultimate Fighter Finale 17 when bantamweight rising star Cat “Alpha” Zingano defeated former Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate.

With a very impressive victory, Zingano stopped the fight at 2:55 in the third round with a stoppage by referee Kim Winslow after pounding Tate with more knees and elbows then she could handle. That, however, will not be the end of it. Word is in the women’s MMA today reads that Liz “ Girl-rilla” Carmouche and Miesha “Cupcake” Tate who are both coming off of defeats in the UFC debuts and will go toe to toe on July 27th in Seattle, Washington at UFC 8 on Fox.

This is an extremely exciting year for women’s MMA and things will continue to move forward and get more exciting because of the new TUF 18 series that will air on September 4th and this season will most definitely go down in my book as being the most exciting season yet and you will not want to miss this. Not only are there 2 female coaches for the first time which is UFC Women’s Champion Rhonda Rousey and Cat Zingano, but there will be male and female bantamweights that will compete for their UFC Contracts. Rousey and Zingano are scheduled to fight each other sometime towards the end of the year in December as the TUF coaches.

At the Palace Station Hotel in one of my favorite places in the world in Las Vegas, Nevada, 50 female fighters meet on Monday April 15th to compete for their spot in the house on the TUF reality show. The very lucky contenders who will make it through will start taping sometime in May and will be aired on September 4th. The ladies on this season will go down in history for being the first girls to ever be inside the UFC TUF house. Add the explosive element of having both genders under one roof and you have something very volatile? This is going to be the most interesting series of TUF yet. I Never thought I would see the day because when I first got into this sport I said to myself" If the UFC ever brings women into the octagon, I will start to fight" haha with 2 torn ACLS I doubt that will happen now, but I am thinking about taking on a few classes to see the love of the sport from the other side.

This sport is evolving more and more and women are becoming more competitive. There's no doubt in my mind that the women’s division is here to stay, especially since there were a couple of UFC cards that the girl fights were the most exciting. There are so many up and coming MMA stars, one of the names that come to mind is Sara McMann which is ranked the 11th pound for pound fighter in the world. On April 27th she made her UFC debut and defeated Sheila Gaff to become only the 3rd female ever to have a UFC victory. The competition is getting more intense and I am very excited to see what the MMA community has in store for us fans in the near future.

The trash talking was rampant and the action was violent Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen got down and dirty in front of a frenzied crowd of 15,227 with a live gate of $2.7 million. This event was hyped to the gills with almost every fight engaging in a war of words before the battle actually began. We also saw a night full of eye pokes which raises more red flags regarding the open 4 oz. gloves we love so much. Is it time for a new design? With that thought rattling around in your brain let us take a look at what went down Saturday night in the Octagon.

The night was full of relevant fights but one fight that was not on the main card that perhaps shined brighter then the rest was Sara McMann vs. Sheila Gaff. The Olympic Silver Medallist immediately secured a double leg takedown as Gaff waded in with no respect for McMann's Olympic wrestling ability. McMann pushed Gaff up against the cage and worked her over with ground and pound and even worked a neck crank at one point. The referee then stood them up where we could see the size difference between gaff and McMann with Gaff getting the advantage. The two women went to clinch where McMann again scored a single leg takedown and moved quickly into crucifix position. From there it was just a matter of time as McMann tagged gaff with powerful elbows and punches before the fight was mercifully stopped. McMann gets her first victory inside the UFC in impressive fashion with a first round TKO.

The night opening fight of the main card was awarded "Fight of the Night" as Pat Healy and Jim Miller went to war. Miller came into the fight as the favorite, but Healy did not seem to get that memo as he took the fight immediately to Miller who was able to match the frantic pace. By the third round Healy had taken control of the fight and slapped on a viscous looking rear naked choke to win the fight.

The second fight on the main card was billed as an elite wrestler against an elite BJJ player. Division I All-American Phil Davis showed why he is still a force to be reckoned with as he dominated his fight with BJJ black belt Venny Magalhaes from start to finish. Despite possessing elite level wrestling, Davis manager to keep the fight standing through out the fight and showed off his much-improved stand up game. Magalhaes never could really get into the fight and Davis ended up taking home the victory by way of unanimous decision.

This next fight was a fight I really wanted to see and turned out to be very pleasurable indeed. "Big Country" Roy Nelson went to blows with kickboxer Cheick Kongo in a heavyweight clash to move up the ladder and get into title contention. Nelson certainly made the best case Saturday night as he basically knocked out Kongo with one punch. Actually it was more like two punches, but the first one put the big French man on his back. A single follow up shot just to make sure was delivered, however it was not even necessary as the fight was stopped and "Big Country" was awarded the victory via knockout in the first round. Nelson also took home "Knockout of the Night" with that brutal homerun.

The co-main event was basically a showcase for the skills of Michael Bisping as he took on an overmatched Alan Belcher. Bisping left no answer to his riddle as he constantly picked Belcher apart. Belcher did not look to be very quick and seemed to tire quickly as he desperately tried to keep up. In the end Bisping got the victory with a unanimous technical decision due to an accidental eye poke. These eye pokes are happening way to often and something needs to be done.

The main event featured the most hyped light heavyweight title tilt in UFC history as the young Jon Jones stepped to the line against Chael Sonnen. The trash talk spewed by Sonnen was like none other and the young champion was ready to shut his mouth once and for all and that is exactly what he did. Jones overpowers the much smaller Sonnen from the start never giving the wrestler a chance to gain an advantage. As the round wound down Jones managed to knock Sonnen to the ground where he threw a laser knee to the chest of the downed Sonnen ala Silva. From there the end was near as Jones unleashed a torrent of unanswered punches until the official stepped in at 4:33 of round one to take retain the UFC light heavyweight title.

This was a great night of fights and I am really looking forward t seeing where some of the fighters will go next. Sara McMann made her case as the number one contender in the world for the women's UFC title being held currently by Ronda Rousey. What a fight that would make as we would see the first Olympic Medallist vs. Olympic Medallist in UFC history. We have seen it go down in Pride before but never inside the Octagon. I truly believe McMann could stop the armbar of Rousey and turn it into a serious fight and maybe even takes home the UFC Women's title. Roy Nelson showed once again why he is so dangerous and over looked at the risk of all. Nelson wants a title shot and I believe he will eventually get one. Bisping got another win and took another step toward that elusive title shot. Bisping has fought in three title eliminator fights and has came up short. Is the Britt cursed, or does he just choke during the big fight. If he has this much trouble just trying to get a chance at the title then how will he do when he actually steps into the cage against "The Spider"? Finally, Who can beat Jon Jones? The man is absolutely amazing and is like no other champion in history. He reminds me very much of a young Muhammad Ali, or even a young Mike Tyson, before Tyson lost his mind. Could we have finally met the first man who will retire undefeated as a champion? As with everything else, time will tell. See you all next time.

It is finally time to back the hype up as UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen drops onto Newark, NJ. The Prudential Center will be the battlefield for the warriors of the UFC. This is going to be an action packed card including the UFC debut of former Conflict Fighter and Olympic Silver Medallist Sara McMann who will step to the line against Sheila Graff. Fan Favorite Roy Nelson will throw down with Cheick Kongo and Michael Bisping will try to get back into the title picture with a win over Alan Belcher. The main event will be the moment everyone will be on their seat as UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones puts his title on the line against "The People's Champ" Chael Sonnen. I have goose bumps! Let us take a look at the main card.

Pat Healy vs. Jim Miller

The night will start off with a classic clash between to veterans of MMA. Pat Healy (29-16) will make his UFC debut as he goes up against Jim Miller (22-4). Healy is on a major six-fight win streak over men like Lyle Beerbohm, Maximo Blanca, and Carlos Fodor. Miller was at one point on a straight path right to a chance at the UFC lightweight title and then ran into hard times. After riding a seven-fight win streak Miller ran into current UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson. Now the two men meet in the Octagon in order to prove themselves all over again. Healy has to prove it on the UFC stage and Miller has to prove he has not lost his winning touch. This is going to be an excellent fight and could be a candidate for "Fight of the Night".

Christian's Prediction: Jim Miller via split decision

Phil Davis vs. Vinny Magalhaes

This is going to be an interesting fight, as we will see a Division I All American against a BJJ black belt and TUF 8 alumni. Phil Davis (10-1-1) will try and put his name back into the UFC light heavyweight title picture. Davis went undefeated with a 9 fight win streak until meeting former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans. Davis has since gotten back to his winning ways with a win over Wagner Prado in their rematch back at UFC 153. Davis is known for solid wrestling that he transitions into sneaky submission. It will be interesting to see if Davis chooses to stay on the feet or go to the ground with Vinny Magalhaes (10-5-1). Vinny is riding a six-fight win streak in which he has finished every single opponent by either TKO or submission. That is seriously impressive. Magalhaes will be comfortable whereever the fight takes him and so will Davis. This fight has "epic" written all over it.

Christian's Prediction: Phil Davis by unanimous decision

Cheick Kongo vs. Roy Nelson

This is a fight that I am really looking forward to, as everyone's favorite redneck fighter Roy Nelson (18-7) will bang with French kick boxer Cheick Kongo (18-7-2). This is going to be an old fashioned fist to cuff match. These two men know how to strike and are going to come at each other very hard. Nelson is looking for his third straight KO as he has finished both Matt Mitrione and Dave Herman in the first round. Kongo will continue his roller-coaster career and try to start a win streak after defeating Shawn Jordan at UFC 149. It will really depend on which Kong shows up as sometimes he dazzles and sometimes he fizzles. I believe this is a night that Kongo will bring it and it will bring out the best in both men. We could see the "Knockout of the Night" in this fight.

Christian's Prediction: Roy Nelson via TKO in round 2

Alan Belcher vs. Michael Bisping

The co-main event is another "Fight of the Night: contender as both of these men is elite fighters coming off of defeats. Up until the end of 2012 Alan Belcher was a name that you would hear in the same sentence as UFC middleweight championship until he heard the "Thunder". Yushin Okami ended his championship dreams for the moment with a solid unanimous decision victory over Belcher. Up until that point Belcher had left destruction in his wake with finishes over each of his 4 opponents leading up to Okami. Those men were none other then Wilson Gouveia, Patrick Cote, Jason MacDonald, and Rousimar Palhares. That is beyond impressive. Michael Bisping (23-5) looks to end the Belcher hype and get his self back into title contention. Bisping use to be a man who every just knew would one day fight for the title. Lately he has been struggling to even stay in the title picture. It started with a defeat against Chael Sonnen and has recently came to a head with his devastating defeat at the feet of Vitor Belfort who knocked him out with an explosive head kick. Bisping is now using his recent bad luck as motivation to get back to being the best in the world and it starts Saturday night. Both these men are going to bring it and not stop until one or the other is lying unconscious on the canvas.

Christian's Prediction: Bisping by unanimous decision

Jon Jones (UFC Light Heavyweight Champion) vs. Chael Sonnen

This is a fight that has been hyped perhaps more then any other UFC light heavyweight title fight in history. The only one that comes to mind is either Liddell vs. Ortiz I, or Liddell vs. Couture II. It is amazing this fight is even happening, as it is rare indeed when a man coming off of one title fight defeat in a lesser weight class gets another title fight in a heavier weight class. That is just what is happening as the Challenger and Division I All-American Chael Sonnen (27-12-1) looks to extend his win streak to three and capture UFC gold in one shot. Sonnen will look to use his superior wrestling to take this fight to the ground and proceed to unleash so hellish ground and pound as he did in his first fight with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is determined to shut the mouth of Sonnen and extend his mythical reign as the youngest UFC champion in history. No one has been able to stop Jones yet and he has proven he can finish anyone at anytime when he puts his mind to it. Jones is absolutely amazing to watch. I have only gushed over a fighter like Jones three times during my love affair with MMA. Those three men are Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva, and Fedor Emelianenko. This is a fight you do not want to miss.

Christian's Prediction: Jones by KO in round 2

Make sure you tune in Saturday night on the Conflict Fighting news page to catch the full results and review of the event. See you there.

One of the most consistent referees in MMA today may be out of a job. UFC Referee Josh Rosenthal was arrested for the manufacture and distribution of marijuana. We are not talking an ounce of sticky icky here my friends. We are talking serious weight.

A Warehouse owned by Rosenthal was raided and officials found over six million dollars in weed. Rosenthal has pleaded guilty and now awaits sentencing. Sources say that Rosenthal could face up to ten years in prison with fines up to $10 million.

It is sad to lose such a great referee when the supply of consistent officials are few and far between. Josh has been in many main events and has rarely missed a call.

We all wish Josh the best and hope to see him back in the cage as soon as possible. Good Luck to you Josh!

Things got very interesting in San Jose, California as UFC on FOX 7: Henderson vs. Melendez touched down at the HP Pavilion tonight. This was one of the most entertaining MMA events in quite sometimes as we witnessed eight knockouts, a successful defense of the UFC lightweight championship, and a proposal to the chorus of boos. Let us not forget this was the final wave of Strikeforce fighters to enter the UFC as Thomson, Cormier and Melendez compete in crucial fights. It does not get much more entertaining then that. Let us take a look at what went down.

Matt Brown opened the main event in his usual brutal manner and set the tone for the rest of the night. Brown took the fight to Meins and tried to turn it into a brawl quickly. Meins kept it technical even though he was favoring his eye throughout the night. Brown stalked forward and let his hands do the talking. The fight goes into the second round where Brown puts Meins in his knees where he finishes the fight by TKO with punishing elbows and punches. Brown is now riding a 5 fight win streak and will possibly face a top ten opponent in his next fight.

This is the first relevant Strikeforce crossover fight as former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson took on Nate Diaz. Thomson is very familiar with the Diaz brothers as they train with Thomson's career nemesis Gilbert Melendez. Diaz brought the fight to Thomson fast and hard trying to set the tempo of the fight. Diaz taunts Thompson through out the fight until in the second round Thomson catches Diaz with a head kick that stuns the Stockton native. Thomson then swarmed on the injured Diaz brother with powerful punches until the referee is forced to stop the fight giving Thomson the TKO victory. Thomson made a big impression in his UFC return and Diaz is now on a two fight losing streak for the third time in his career. You know what they say about three defeats in a row in the UFC. Diaz is now on the hot seat.

This is a fight I was seriously looking forward as former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier made his UFC debut against former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Cormier is on fire entering this fight with a perfect 11-0 record. He has decimated professionals such as Antonio Silva, Jeff Monson and Josh Barnett. Cormier enters the fight very calm as he stalks Mir who is shifting constantly and looks to be having a hard time finding the proper stance. Mir throws some very hard kicks to the body throughout the fight as Cormier utilizes his dirty boxing when he takes the fight to the clinch against the fence. This is how much of the fight goes down, as Mir cannot seem to keep up with the younger and faster Cormier. Mir keeps going to the clinch where Cormier gets the better of the exchanges every single time. Eventually the final horn sounds and Daniel Cormier gets his hand raised in a unanimous decision victory. Mir is now on a two fight win streak and needs to do something fast to save his already fading career. Cormier on the other hand has the world in his hands as he will now go up in competition and look to take the UFC heavyweight strap as his own.

The main event was nothing less the a classic as UFC light heavyweight champion Benson Henderson welcomed former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez. The fight was a barnburner from the start as both champions brought the fight with heavy leather and great technique. Gilbert looked to take the first three rounds as he dictated the pace and managed to get a takedown here and there. By the fourth round however, Benson picked up the pace and pulled ahead with vicious kicks that turned Melendez's calves, thighs and knees black and blue. By the end of the fight both fighters fought like champions, but the judges, in the end, gave the nod to Henderson by way of a razor sharp split decision. There will almost certainly be a rematch between these two warriors and I believe the MMA community will welcome it. Benson did live up to his nickname as he smoothly proposed to his girlfriend live on network TV and luckily for the champion she said yes. Benson is now firmly in control of the title and Gilbert will without a doubt bring it even hard and with more intensity the next go around.

Tonight was a great night of fights chock full of knockouts, title defense and proposals. The UFC continues to grow at and unprecedented pace as its events are just as good if not better then the last. Up next will be UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen in a light heavyweight championship fight that will be one of the biggest in history just because of the surrounding hype. Tune in here at Conflict to get the scoop. See you there.

It’s always funny how things work out in your life. Growing up I loved my food and I was not always a chunky monkey… ok maybe I was, but I tried to stay active so I tried wrestling and was the soccer manager throughout my middle school years because I could not seem make any sports teams. Then being a cheerleader in high school was some of the best years of my life. When I started on the freshman team at SJHS (Stonewall Jackson High School) we won the state championship for the first time since 1999 for their freshmen team. For the first time in my life I finally felt like I was a part of a team and the trophy was a plus. Perfect Example of how sometimes you need to be patient in life and give things time.

Unfortunately, around my sophomore year in 2009 when I finally made the JR varsity cheerleading squad, I tore my right ACL 3 days before my competition so I was out of commission for the next 6-8 months after surgery. When I got better I let go of the actual sport due to me being afraid of getting hurt again and having to recover all over again. I turned to teaching some classes for side work to small children 7 and under. Most of the time in life you have to work for what you have. Now do not get me wrong, some are more fortunate than others, but if you work hard in life you are more likely to succeed then someone who just wishes but doesn’t work for what they want.

Back in 2005 I was working for a friends towing company making decent money and I worked the night shift which was 6pm to 6am. Having said that, I was eating all night, sleeping all day, and that led to me packing on a good amount of weight. Around that time I went on a trip to Germany and France. I will never forget the day I stepped on the scale and it said 250 + pounds. Being that I was in my early 20’s I knew I needed to get focused on my life, my health, and my appearance very fast.

Most people that knew me at that time did not even remember that I was heavy because I was still making sure my nails, hair and such were all done . It was not a huge part of my life so a lot of people do not remember me like that, but it was a hard part of my life where I had to decide to follow the crowd or walk on my own. As much as I would love to not have to miss so many good times and great memories, sometimes I make the gym priority and that is why today I stand at 120 slim pounds.

A huge part of my weight loss success goes toward the MMA community. Even though I am not a fighter I love the sport, the people in the sport, pretty much everything about the sport. Being that I work ring girl, Tickets, and wherever else i am needed, it certainly shows that am I huge fan. One cool thing I always look back at through the years meeting different UFC fighter and seeing how much I’ve grown along with this sport. Back at UFC 68 I was a little on the heavier side and to compare those pictures to recent UFC’s is crazy and I have had the chance to meet some of the same fighters years later so it is neat to see the difference.

Most people don’t believe me about my weight, but once they see the pictures they think its unreal. Once you get motivated on a plan or a goal all you have to do is work to get there. It is your life and you are in control. Even though four to five days a week I am a medical assistant for a dermatologist office. I get off work between 4:00 - 5:00pm and I go to the gym and usually leave close to 7-7:30pm. I always ask myself this what is better? Go and sit at home where I will probably dwell on negative things in my life or day, or go to the gym and let it all out. I have chosen the gym and it has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.

I know a lot of people have different schedules, but if you can find time to at least do 1 hour of cardio a week you will be so much happier, so much healthier, and look so much better. Eating was one thing that was the hardest for me because I was not getting the proper nutrition and still working out. Now I try and eat at least 5 small meals a day and I am a huge fan of protein bars, smoothies, or shakes. Yum! More health stories to come.

Thank you again for all my readers and fans who write me. Please write to me at ontheropeswithisabel@gmail.com with any questions you may have. They will be featured in one of my up and coming articles. Tune in on Sundays to blogtalkradio/conflightfighting and listen in to Conflict Fighting's weekly podcast.
