CHS Registration Page

Conifer High School parents can now register for school at their own convenience from home, work, or wherever they enjoy using the Internet. Links to all registration materials, forms, and websites referenced in the instructions are listed on the CHS registration page. All paperwork must be completed and fees paid and turned into the main office by August 19th. The office is open 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. If you are NEW to Conifer High School click here.

Music Treasure Sale

Saturday, Aug 6th

The annual summer garage sale to support the instrumental music program will be held indoors on Saturday,
August 6 at CHS.

Come shop for fun, for bargains, and to furnish that new graduate’s apartment or dorm room.

Donations to the sale will be gratefully accepted the week prior to the sale. All donations are accepted and are tax deductible with our Donor Receipt.

Sports Physical Clinic Aug. 4th

Sports Physical Clinic

To participate in a sport, athletes must have a current sports physical (physicals are good for 364 days).

There will be a sports physical clinic on Thursday, August 4th, from 4-8 pm at Conifer Mountain Family Medicine (Dr. Linn), 10791 Kitty Drive, Conifer (across from Staples). Cost is $25.00 and no appointment is necessary.

CHS and WJMS Team Up for 4th of July Float

Join Conifer High School and West Jefferson
Middle School in the Indian Hills 4th of July Parade!

Once again Conifer High School and West Jeff Middle School will be entering a float for the Indian Hills 4th of July parade. If you are interested or know anyone who wants to ride the float send an email--or just show up!

This year we are prepared with water! Bring your water weapons--water balloons, soakers, etc.. Fill them before you come and refill them from the truck.

We'll have a decorated truck at Parmalee Elementary at 11 a.m. on Monday the 4th. The road will be closed from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. so be sure to get there before that happens!

Graduation Info and Help Needed

Saturday, May 21st

Conifer High School's Lobo Field

The Class of 2011 will be graduating this Saturday, May 21st at 11 a.m. at Lobo Field!

Parking is available near Lobo Field and shuttles will be running from the areas featured below (click on image for larger view). Transportation from the parking area to the field will be provided for those who need it.

Graduation will take place on Lobo Field come rain or shine or snow! (See graduation weather policy below.)

Be sure to arrive early to get a good seat!

Graduation Practice

Graduation practice will take place Friday, May 20th at 9 a.m. in the gym, followed by the Senior Picnic at 11 on the patio. Caps and gowns will be distributed after rehearsal. All fines must be paid and graduation survey complete before receiving caps and gowns.

On graduation day, seniors should plan to meet on the softball field at 10:30 a.m.

PTSA Meeting and Recycling Event

Thank you to all who helped either financially or with your time for After Prom. I think the kids had a great time!

The next PTSA meeting will be Friday, May 13th at 7 a.m. at CHS. We need your help - many hands make for lighter loads! Our treasurer of many years (THANK YOU Cathy Taylor!!) has a graduating daughter so we are in need of a treasurer for next year. Cathy has done a great job and has all the information and structure for this position very well organized so the transition to a new treasurer should be clear and straight forward. If you are interested in serving CHS in this way please plan on attending the meeting or email me prior to May 13th. We will be discussing what services we will be providing to CHS students and teachers for the upcoming year. We need your input. What events you value and which events you would like PTSA to commit to?

Recycling Event

Also, during the Home & Garden show on Saturday, May 14th there will be a recycling event at CHS. See flyer for all of the items you can bring to CHS for recycling. Volunteers are also needed to help unload items - please respond to this email and I will forward to Mary Ellen Wickham who has worked very hard to make this event a reality. (You also get one free ticket to the show per vehicle).

AP Testing Window Opens

Dear Lobo Families:

This week we start our AP testing window and this year 335 students will be taking approximately 600 tests. Advance Placement test are scored by the College Board and students can receive college credit for scores of a three, four or five on a five point scale. We strongly encourage students to take the test because the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Below is an email I received from Sean Story. Sean is a freshmen attending Vanderbilt and loving the school.

I was thinking the other day about what I was doing at this time of the year in years previous, and something I remembered was sitting in classes and listening to the assistant principals encouraging students to register for AP classes for the next year. I'm incredibly glad I listened to their advice, because of my AP classes; I came to college with 24 credit hours, and enough understanding of topics to skip entry level classes. Enough of a head start, in fact, that I'm going to be able to double major, and getting my Master's degree in Computer Science after 4 years of being here. I crunched the numbers the other day, and AP classes have saved me about $120,000 worth of tuition, room, and board, not taking into account tuition inflation, living expenses, or even the fact that these classes were probably a big part of what got me into this school.
Any how, I wanted to shoot you an email, asking if you might appreciate having another body to talk to students about how beneficial AP classes really can be.

Provide Feedback on the 2011-2012 Jeffco Budget

COLORADO’S K-12 CUTS FORCE
DEEP JEFFCO REDUCTIONS

The president of the Jefferson County Board of Education announced today that because of the state’s budget crisis, the district will cut nearly $40 million from its 2011-12 budget. The cuts include the proposed closure of two schools, a three percent loss of compensation for all employees and the suspension of outdoor lab for sixth-graders.

The list of proposed cuts was developed after an historic employee summit. Participants included two representatives each from the Jefferson County Board of Education, the Jefferson County Education Association, the Classified School Employee Association, the Jefferson County Administrators Association and district leadership. The summit was facilitated by a federal mediator.

The list of proposed reductions includes:

A three percent loss of compensation for all employees, resulting in a four-work-day reduction and two student-contact furlough days.
The closure of Martensen and Zerger elementary schools.
A loss of 212 jobs throughout the district, including teachers, administrators and support staff.
Moving Long View High School staff and students to McLain High School
Higher athletic fees
Transportation fees
The suspension of the outdoor lab experience for Jeffco sixth-graders at Mt. Evans and Windy Peak

"We recognize that some of these recommendations will be difficult for our community, but they are the right decisions during tough economic times. The employee summit demonstrated bold leadership on the part of our employee associations, our board and our district administration,” said Board of Education President Dave Thomas.

“Our staff is absorbing the brunt of the reductions with the loss of jobs and the loss of compensation in order to have the least impact on our students and the quality of education they are receiving,” said Jeffco Superintendent Dr. Cindy Stevenson.

A public hearing regarding the budget will be held during the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, May 5th starting at 6 p.m. in the Board Room at the Education Center, 1829 Denver West Dr., Bldg. 27, 5th floor, Golden.

In order to hear as many community voices as possible, the Board of Education has adjusted its public comment guidelines: individuals who sign up on the Public Comment Roster on the day of the meeting will have two minutes to address the Board of Education. Groups of four or more individuals on the same topic will have five minutes to address the Board. Sign-up occurs on the day of the public hearing beginning at 4 p.m. on the 5th floor, or before 4 p.m. in the Board of Education office.

Dear Lobo Families:

I know I often talk about the importance of academic achievement, but last week kept the affective elements of our students' growth in focus. The Make a Difference Week, along with the completion of our outdoor classroom and reflective garden, gave our students (especially our seniors) something to be proud of. Also, our students showed how they have embraced the similarities in all of us by electing Kathleen English prom queen. Kathleen is a 4.0 student, a participant and ambassador for Special Olympics, and has made a positive impression on so many students and staff. Kathleen truly makes a difference every day!

Kudos to Tim LeCount and all of his students for a special evening and thanks to all the volunteers, too. Also, a big ‘thank you’ to Sherry Fuller and all the After-Prom parent volunteers. Prom and After-Prom were safe, fun, and I didn't get a phone call in the middle of the night. I will be tired all week, but my 33rd prom will be one that I will always remember.

Last Minute Requests for After Prom

We are coming down to the wire for After prom. Everything is coming together and looks to be a great event.

PRIZES. We still need prizes, however, so if you have anything you are willing to donate that teens would want (bath basket, gift card to local fast food, backpack, etc.), please contact me . We have 2 laptops, gift bags with jewelry & $25 gift cards to Plato's closet, and American outfitters $25 gift cards. We will probably have enough money to purchase a TV (for future dorm rooms) and maybe a microwave. Let me know if you have any small things. Thanks.

Anyone have fake greenery/ivy or tropical/palm tree that we can use?

Need a few parents to sit at hallways the night of the event to be sure students don't sneak their friends in through other doors ( great place to sit with a friend and catch up).

Let me know if you want to work the event, we need a few more volunteers.

We also need a minimum of 2 people for each lunch to collect waivers.

Dear Conifer Parents and Guardians,

Ben Franklin once said, the fairest and only form of taxation a government should impose on a person should be a self imposed/voluntary tax or a state/government lottery. By state law and by the vote of the people of Colorado, lottery money can only go to fund parks in our great state. Consequently, parks and recreation districts throughout the state have access to lottery funds and can choose to make this their only form funding. For example, many Open Space districts choose only to use lottery funds (via grants) to improve their parks.

I understand many groups' efforts to reduce government during these most extraordinary times. However, in Conifer our children play sports on gravel fields and patrons travel miles for recreation
service. ‘Yes,’ this is our choice, and we choose to live in a community without a rec. district, and have voted down tax imposing recreation districts many times. However, why not consider voting ‘yes’ for a non-taxing district on May 3rd. This will enable CHS and our mountain schools to partner with the recreation district. One example of this potential partnering is that we are in conversations with the group's organizers about the possibility of having programs here at CHS. This will give Conifer residents a chance to improve our community's recreational opportunities on a very small scale, as well as having access and local control to the fairest form of taxes (the lottery funds).

Building Toward College Success

Dear Lobo Parents and Guardians

My counselor and administrative teams are participating in a book study about ways we can improve upon the third part of our mission:

Student success of today and tomorrow…

We know that over 90% of our students attend college after graduation, and we want to ensure that all students are truly ready for the challenges of college. The book we are reading is College Knowledge: What it Really Takes for Students to Succeed and…by David Conley. One of his most compelling points is the importance of a strong finish to a student’s high school career. He says too often students slide out of high school only doing the minimum to complete the high school requirements. He says and I agree with Conley’s view that students fail to realize the rigorous expectations that await them in college. Parents please remind your student that every year and every class builds toward the next, and the core (math, English, social studies and science) should be a part of each year of high school. Also, free periods should only be part of a student’s schedule if a students needs time during the day. For example, a free period is warranted if a student plays a sport, has a job and is carrying three or more AP classes.

Recap of the Week (2/21-2/26)

Dear Lobo Community,

One of the best parts of my job is attending athletic/activity events and watching our students perform. Last week, I was able to attend the opening to our Broadway show “Footloose” and watch our girls basketball team advance to the Elite 8. Yet, the best performance came from our Challenge students as they played host to the Elk Creek Fire Department in our Annual Special Olympics basketball game. It was an amazing performance and kudos to all the firefighters who played. My mentor once said, “…some things we just can’t learn from a book.” Special Olympics events provide all of us with teachable moments.

Congrats to Travis Himmelman for winning his 3^rd State Wrestling Championship and don’t forget to watch our girls basketball team play Broomfield on Friday at 4:00pm. The game will be played at The School of Mines in Golden.

Creative Arts Exhibit at Splish

On March 3rd, the art students of Conifer High School will be displaying their work at Splish Salon, located in the Safeway Center. The exhibit will include photographs, pottery, and a few other types of art, done by the advanced art students and art teachers. On opening night, the artists will be at Splish proudly representing their work from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Food and drinks will be provided.

Please come support your local artists at Splish. The art will be on display through the month of March and is available for purchase in multiple sizes.

We value your students participation in this assessment program. Please ensure that your student is in attendance at school during this time period. We are emphasizing to students that every testing opportunity they experience provides a scaffold on which they can improve test-taking skills.
