Samhain is not just Halloween, costumes and candy. Samhain is the ancient Celtic celebration of the end of the harvest cycle of the growing season; bonfires dotted the landscape and the ancestors were honored. This is the season of death and of spirits, of magic and mystery. It is said that the veil that exists between the world of the dead and the living is at its thinnest during this dark season so this Hallows I have channeled 13 dark potions that can be used ritually as well as fragrantly. Empowered on September's rare Black Moon, these oils are imbued with depth, power and intensity and a drop of my handmade black moonstone gem essence! The corrupted blood of ancient dragons is infused with patchouli black. The midnight musk petals from les Fleurs du Mal are caramelized cauldron bound with black opium, black fig and dark muscavadao sugar. Defiled deeply by the scent of smoke of crimson red leaves and Scandinavian churches ablaze, filling the crisp autumn air with sweet despair. Nema!

SPIRITS WHO TRAVERSE BETWEEN THE WORLDS

These are the spirits of life and death. They are psychopomps that travel freely between the veil of the dead and the living. Some are gentle and kind, others are intense and terrifying. These spirits are closer to us at Samhain, throughout the dark months and then again at Beltaine when the veil is thin once more.

AYAO

Ayao is the Yoruban Orisha of the wind. She is the eye of the storm and sister to the mighty Oya, Ayao wields the power of witchcraft and magical knowledge. Her companion is the snake and her weapon is the crossbow. Find her in the forest where the leaves swirl like a cyclone.

A whirling cyclone of crisp fall leaves fills the air coupled with slithering wisps of wood smoke, tonka bean and black plum.
CAER IBORMEITH

Caer Ibormeith, bride of Angus Mac Og, the Irish Lord of Love is a shape shifter, swan and beautiful woman. She is also a goddess of death, as her name means yew berry, the toxic fruit from the yew tree. Offer her mead on Samhain to celebrate the beauty of love and the agony of death.

The joy and pain of true love and inevitable death: yew berry accord infused black patchouli, swan feather soft vanilla musk, red amber and stout clove.

CHARON

Charon is the infamous ferryman that grants passage to Hades across the river Styx. Cantankerous and cold, he only accepts passengers with proper funeral rites that have the fare of a coin to pay him. If you don't you're doomed to find your own perilous way to Hades. Good luck. Offer him coins for payment at the cemetery gates.

An ancient memory of Tunisian opium, precious oudh, aged tobacco and chthonic rhus khus.

HEKATE'S TORCH

She holds the keys to all domains, passing freely between the realms of the dead and the living. She is the beloved Queen of the Witches, waiting at the crossroads with her beloved dog. She is mistress of the poison path cultivating plants that can be used to cure, kill or stir the souls of the witches that venerate her. Invoke her on the dark moon at the crossroads at midnight, walk away and don't look back.

Often depicted with two torches that allow her safe passage between the worlds, allow Hekate's Torch to guide you along your path. A light in the darkness: earthen patchouli, apotropaic clove, spiritually uplifting frankincense, Persephone's pomegranate and illuminated bergamot.

KING OF TERRORS

He's the man who comes and does the job with no illusions - this is death hit man style! The crowned, weapon wielding skeleton can appear as the Grim Reaper or Holy Death and his haunting images is on many tombstones and churches, reminding the viewer Memento Mori! Call his frightening visage with his symbols of scythe, spear and arrow.

The musty shadows of the cemetery, haunted loam and moss, metal sting and arterial spray.

LA MADAMA

If you think about what Aunt Jemima looks like you'll have a pretty good idea of La Madama's appearance. Not a singular spirit, per se, but a vast network of spirits who oftentimes are the spirits of deceased Lucumi priestesses from Cuba and Puerto Rico. Everyone who has their own unique Madama can tell you her name and how she lived her life. This information is gleaned via spiritual masses, quiet reflection and other spiritual work. She is a teacher and mentor spirit who favors diviners, spiritual workers, healers, mediums and the like. A powerful partner for magic, cleansings and protection. Offer her flowers and cigars while staring into her eyes in a candlelit room to get her to speak her secrets to you.

LES MORTS

Les Morts is what those in the Voudoun tradition call The Dead. The belief in the Voudon religion is when someone passes away they really don't die, but go to a spiritual land of their blood and spiritual ancestors called Ginen and are never really far from their living loved ones. Les Morts are spirits to consult with when you have questions about the afterlife, a fear of death or if you would like to have an elevated conversation, as they tend to wax philosophical. Speak to them through scrying with water or mirrors. Gaze in candlelit basins of water to meet with them on the other side.

Still waters, crystal musk, beeswax candles, water lilies, white amber and sweet offerings of coffee and beignets.

LIBITINA

Lady Death, Holy Death. She is the goddess of decay, of death, corpses and funerals. Her Roman temples were where grieving loved ones would report deaths or make funeral arrangements. It is said she appears shrouded in a black winged robe with an obscured face. She will accept offerings of coins and cemetery cleaning and upkeep.

A wistful and somber meditation on eternity: smoked amber, dragon's blood, aged black patchouli, rose hips, cypress, white myrrh and black storax.

SIMBI

Simbi is the Vodoun snake spirit that originated in the Congo. It is the greatest of all magicians and is the guardian of magicians and occultists. He is also a master healer and diagnostician. Being a freshwater serpent, Simbi loves water, moisture, rain and waterfalls. He is in charge of flow - water, electricity, air currents and therefore manages the energetic exchange involved with moments of sacred possession. Simbi also protects electrical devices such as computers and televisions. Keep an image of a snake on your electronics and offer Simbi some water and rum from time to time to keep him moist and happy to assist.

THANATOS & LETHE

Thanatos is lord of the peaceful death who guides the dead over to his sister, the river Lethe. The waters of Lethe have amnesiac properties and help the dead forget their former lives and attachments. There is no greater pair to petition for a peaceful death, to forget past pains and torments or to instill deep peace. Offer Thanatos black candles, poppies, snakes and butterfly images. Petition Lethe during the dark of night, preferably by a stream or a river.

Black opium, poppy flower, kush, vanilla flower, cannabis accord, blue lotus attar, aged patchouli and mimosa.

VALKYRIE

Norse goddesses of varying tasks: magic, life, battle and death. They ferry the dead warriors to Valhalla or Freya's hall, where they host the fallen. In the beginning they were the daughters of Odin and Herta but over time their numbers grew as it opened up to include the deified priestesses of Odin. Some say they also may be deified shamans with erotic leanings who will fight and protect their human lovers. See them in the swans and crows in the sky with offerings of mead

Honey mead from the halls of Valhalla, the smoke of oak and juniper fires from the battlefield and the magnificent golden musk of eternal glory.

WANYUDO

Manifesting as a disembodied head at the hub of a flaming ox-cart wheel, Wanyudo is a yokai that patrols the line between the living and the dead with violent precision. It is said that a raging fever is produced just by getting a glimpse of Wanyudo. Woe be to the person Wanyudo catches peeking at him as he will roll over them with his wheel ablaze, scorching them to nothing but a crisp shadow on the road! He has also been known to cart gawkers straight to Hell.

An infernal and damned philtre of ginger root, red patchouli, tonka bean, cinnamon sticks and burnt marshmallow.

WASHERS AT THE FORD

Hailing from the British Isles, the Washers at the Ford are the spirits of women in varying degrees of haggardness with ghostly pale skin and disheveled hair. They crouch at the ford of the river where they wail and keen as they furiously launder any number of gristly and bloody items in the murky water: from cloth to armor to severed limbs and heads! In mourning, she continues to cry and shriek as she washes and if she happens to lock eyes with you as you innocently stroll by, it is your impending death that she is mourning! The Washers are not bringers of death as one might assume, but ancient harbingers. It is said when people of great status are to die the Washer presented will not be the typical washer woman, but a goddess such as Badbh or the Morrigan and make herself available for many to see so the cold shiver of a death omen will travel long and far.

A Victorian mourning fougere: bog moss, heather, pitcher plant, water poppy and emerald ferns under a slate gray sky that threatens torrential rain.

THE GRIEF IS OVERWHELMING. The morning of January 11th the world stood still. I dropped my daughter Lucy off at kindergarten when I heard it on NPR - David Bowie, dead at 69 from a long battle with liver cancer. I couldn't believe it! It was like something sucked all the air out of the car. Didn't he just have a birthday and release an album? I rode home, dripping tears and denial so thick it was nearly impossible to see. For the rest of that day and for several after all of my friends - Facebook and otherwise - were overt in their mourning. Endless outpourings of disbelief and exhalations of what David had meant to them. How he was so sacred because he validated the freak, the androgynous, the gay, the glamour, the extraterrestrial, the smooth and sexy, the Goblin King in us all.

David Bowie never announced his illness, so to us his death was seemingly spontaneous. But he knew for 18 months and spent that time writing the album Blackstar which is full of allusions to his death and the afterlife. In it we find a touching, well crafted goodbye that could only be achieved by meticulous planning. David died like he lived - a consummate artist that went out with style and grace.
He will be sorely missed on the earthly plane, but his spirit will be ever available to us. Light candles for David, lift them high and give his spirit illumination and elevation.

All 10 planets were crafted and infused into the perfume oil. I have blended these perfumes with the most sacred ingredients and intentions: healing, soul nourishment, spirit connection, peace, prosperity as well as otherworldly, extraterrestrial elements, glamour magick, sacred sexuality and beautiful gender queer energy. Open you heart, mind and spirit and use these scents with prayer and intention, or as always, you can slather on their seductively delicious scents!

REGARDING INGREDIENTS: Please note that even though the flower essences describe a plant name, they do not impart a fragrance into the perfume. They are purely an energetic essence used by the drop.

Chiron

Anisocoria is the medical term for David’s condition – one pupil permanently dilated. The disorder began when he was 15 and got in a scrap with a close friend of his over a girl. This left him with a look that bordered on mystical or otherworldly, fitting seamlessly with his man who fell to earth persona.

Chiron is the asteroid as well as a deity that is known as the Centaur. As a celestial body, it is Chiron that finds a place when you're born, like any planet is supposed to do. As a deity Chiron deals with all aspects of health and disease and how they affect our spiritual path. Chiron himself represents the wounded healer. Like Bowie performing in spite of his eye, it healed those who came to see him. And like Chiron, Bowie found strength through adversity, as does this fragrance. In 1986, David Bowie played Jareth, the Goblin King in the film Labyrinth who tormented young Sarah as she struggled through the twists and turns to get Toby, the little brother who she wished away to the Goblin King herself. Besides John Blaylock in The Hunger, Jareth is one of Bowie’s most cherished, beloved and iconic roles.

“Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child you have stolen, for my will is as strong as yours and my kingdom as great. You have no power over me!”

With the Passing of Bowie, we must also acknowledge the passing of Jareth, the Goblin King. The Goblin King is dead! Long live the Goblin King!

THE BANSHEES' KEEN
Ireland

Closely associated with death, Banshees (traditional spelling, Bean Sidhe, which means Women of the Fairy Mound) are ancient faeries that appear in many ghostly forms. From flawlessly beautiful women draped in diaphanous white flowing robes with glowing, pearlescent skin framed by loose crimson hair dancing about their visage and shoulders to horrific headless forms nude from neck to waist! The blood-curding wail that has become the trademark of the Banshee is not the cause of death as many mistakenly believe, but only harbinger of imminent doom; usually of a close family member, as clans seem to retain specific, familial Banshees throughout the generations. When the Celtic mourning keen of the Banshee is heard, dread fills the hearts of those who bear witness to her humbling power as her visit surely portends the passing of a loved one to the other side.

BLACK ANNIS
England

Sometimes seen as a merger of black cat and demon or as a blue faced hag with claws and horrible teeth, Black Annis lives on the Dane Hills near Leicester, England and is blamed for any missing children or animals in the area. She is said to roam the land after dark stealing babies from their cribs and capturing children and small farm animals who have strayed into her realm. She flays her victims alive, scatters their bones and drapes the skins over the old oak tree near her cave, the Bower.
Yet another instance of a once beloved and powerful goddess reduced to a gruesome two dimensional villain in a children's cautionary tale! May this fragrance serve as an offering to restore Black Annis to her ancient glory.

BLOODY MARY
England

Often dismissed as an urban legend intended to scare teenage girls at slumber parties out of their minds at the stroke of midnight, the spirit of Bloody Mary may have actual historical authenticity linked to it! During her truncated reign, Mary Tudor, the Queen of England from 1553 to 1558, burned over three hundred people at the stake during her brief reign, earning her the moniker 'Bloody Mary'. According to history books, Mary had multiple miscarriages and legend has it that they were caused by people who didn't want her to have an heir or continue her lineage. If this is true, they were indeed successful. She is paired with the Bloody Mary ritual through wording. Some variations on the Bloody Mary chant are "Bloody Mary, I killed your baby" or "Bloody Mary, where is your baby?". All intended on exploiting the mourning spirit's grief. Folklorist Alan Dundes' Freudian interpretation of the ritual is that it is symbolic of menarche and menstruation. Teenage girl + bathroom + the sudden appearance of blood + total instant freak out. You do the math!

A symbolic perfumed prayer to the spirit grief and loss: Blood red gulab attar in full bloom, shy English violet, the passion of clove infused with red sandalwood, red blood musk and the innocence of the gift of crocus in the form of saffron threads all anchored in earthy russet patchouli saturated black honey.

DEVIL'S DANDY DOGS
Southwest England

A variation on the Wild Hunt - a phenomenon witnessed the world over. On stormy nights, usually on the liminal holidays of the Earth such as All Hallows and May Day, or the days that mark the turning of the seasons such as Midsummer or Yuletide, a procession of spirits can be seen parading at night under the full moon. In Hawaii they are known as Night Marchers, and Hyakki Yako in Japan. Great Gods are said to sometimes lead the revelry; Shiva, Dionysis and Freya. The Devil's Dandy Dogs are a Christianized take on the Wild Hunt - a pack of red eyed, fire-breathing and feral hounds are lead through the foggy moonlit English moors at midnight lead by none other than the Adversary himself - Satan!

THE GRIEF OF LA LLORONA
Mexico

Seen roaming through the lonely night dressed in stark white with her face shrouded by a matching veil, La Llorona mortifies all that have the misfortune of coming across her with her terrible cries. Her name itself means 'The Wailing Woman' or 'The Weeping Woman'. Like Black Annis and Bloody Mary she is now an urban legend, however, again like the former, there is so much more to her history. There have been sightings of La Llorona since the 1500's wandering the streets of the town that would eventually become Mexico City lamenting over the loss of her children and then disappearing into the nearby river.

The actual legend of La Llorona is as tragically heartbreaking as it is terrifying. HERE is a particularly thorough telling.

She shares characteristics with the Banshee and the Mothman as a harbinger (not cause) of death and to warn others of impending danger and disaster. La Llorona, who was probably a demonized version of the ancient goddess Cihuacóatl: the goddess of snakes and midwifery, is once again being restored to her goddess status. Young Latina mothers petition her, particularly those in situations of desperation.

Ofrenda para Cihuacóatl: Spiced tobacco, black copal, cempazuchil blossoms, palo santo, guaiac wood and cacao nibs soaked with tequila, drizzled with blue agave syrup and dusted with Ceylon cinnamon powder.

KUNEKUNE YOKAI
Japan

Similar to the Slenderman, Kunekune is a fictitious being made up on Japanese websites around 2003 and is considered to be a modern yokai, or ghost. On hot summer days in the afternoon it is said to materialize. It has the appearance of a tall, thin humanoid figure made of silk or fabric. Its appendages are constantly moving, in fact Kunekune is translated to "wiggle" or "to meander". It is safe to see this yokai from a distance and depending on the location, it takes on different colors; in the countryside and over the ocean, it appears to be ghostly white and tar black in the city. Being too close to the Kunekune causes madness, and to touch it leads to certain death.

This powerful fragrance is based on a rare and ancient Japanese incense recipe I was once gifted long ago by a mysterious Japanese gentleman I met in a bookstore when I was in my early 20s. It is purported to clean the environment from malefic spirits, thus opening the way for blessings from ancestors, deities and the Buddha, The solid incense itself contains several components - many of them are hard to obtain and are quite costly. I have made this perfumed interpretation: A drop of star anise, black sandalwood, agarwood, red benzoin, black cherry and cinnamon bark.

THE GREY LADY
United Kingdom

Grey Ladies are called thusly because they have a gloaming grey ghostly pallor, not so much because of her clothing (like in the case of the White and Green Ladies). There are multiple Grey Ladies that haunt various places throughout the UK. Often, these female spirits have suffered a violent death, in the name of love (a single stab wound to the chest by a certain baron, for example), or they simply wasted away from longing. They often appear with a predictable regularity forever ever searching for their loved ones.

Gray amber, black musk, Egyptian sandalwood, yuzu, coconut husk, Night Queen, Earl Gray and red raspberry raw honey.

GLAISTIG, THE GREEN LADY
Scotland

Green Lady describes several different types of supernatural beings who have little in common save for the deep emerald green dresses worn by the spirits themselves. They are ghosts who haunt ancient castles and dark moors, ruins and lonely, barren areas. Some consider them to be demons. Glaistig is a type of Green Lady. Some say she is a mortal woman turned into a fairy, or a true Highland Fairy. Glaistigs are very helpful on farms and are caretakers of the herds of livestock. They even look out for the children of the farmers as they tend to the animals. However, they are not always benevolent - they have been known to be harbingers of death as well.

ERZEBET BATHORY, LADY IN WHITE
Slavic

Some are ghosts, some are apparitions, some are spirits, but they all wear long flowing white ghostly gowns. The sometimes appear as amorphous white translucent humanoid forms that transform into different horrifying shapes. They are quite beautiful and the white they wear is usually a wedding dress as they have most likely died on their wedding day from a violent attack from their intended, or fathers who opposed the marriage. Some just died of a broken heart. They can walk through the walls of the places they haunt. They are not harmful, but like the other Ladies, they can be harbingers of death as well.
In Slavic mythology, White Ladies are usually the result of women who have committed suicide, died in prison or who were violently murdered. They often tend to linger in the same place, often the place they died. Countess Erzebet Bathory is a great example of a White Lady. At the time of her trial, she was reported to have killed up to 650 women, allegedly bathing in the blood of virgin girls to retain her youthful beauty. Countess Bathory died while imprisoned where it is said her spirit still lingers. Paranormal investigators have searched for evidence that will lead to the existence of the tormented spirit of Countess Erzebet Bathory. To this day, evidence has remained inconclusive.

MACHINE ELVES
Subconscious and Psychic Realms

Machine Elves (also known as Fractal Elves or Self-Transforming Elf Machines) is a term coined by the late ethnobotanist, writer and philosopher Terence McKenna to describe the entities that are often reported by individuals using the ethenogenic compound DMT, also known as the God Molecule. These creatures, existing on the Astral Plane, seem to take advantage of a person's DMT experience to introduce themselves and to interact with the person using the substance. They appear as small beings composed of iridescent rainbow fractals that have the ability to enter and exit the person's spiritual body and consciousness at will. The purpose of the Machine Elves seems to make sense out of all the metaphysical and spiritual information that is being presented to a person while interacting with DMT by participating in a ayahuasca ceremony or imbibing DMT containing plants such as Reed Canary Grass. While this fragrance does contain plants that have been known to contain DMT and other alkaloids, it is sold as a perfume and a curio only. Please use it as fragrance ONLY. If I catch you using it any other way I will kick your ass and not make any other neat tribute scents such as this and you'll be the reason we can't have nice things.

TULPA
Tibet

Rooted in ancient Indian and Tibetan Buddhist lore and practice, a Tulpa is a sentient spiritual being (also known as an emanation, hallucination or thought form) imagined into existence by a practitioner using the power of concentrated thought and specialized techniques in meditation. Also known as Servitor Magick, it is a current practice in Western Occultism. Online communities can be found at tulpa dot info and in the subReddit group r/Tulpa. There is quite an extraordinary community of practitioners, known as Tulpamancers, creating Tulpas based on characters found in their favorite television programs - My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic being one of the most popular.

VAMPIRE PUMPKIN
Balkan Peninsula

Originating as a folk legend from the Balkans, it is associated with the Romani people (who seem to have a wonderful connection with vampiric folklore in general!) According to legend, any inanimate object left outside overnight in the light of the full moon can become a vampire! Look out for a drop of blood on the surface of the pumpkin's skin - it's a clear sign that the vampiric transformation had just begun or ended. A scholarly work from Serbia in the 1930's states that according to the Gypsies, two plants that are most prone to vampiric proclivities are the pumpkin and the watermelon. To destroy plants that have turned into the undead, you need to plunge the plants into boiling water, dump the plants and the water onto the ground, sweep the water and fruit away and then burn the broom.
Just when you thought it was safe to make a pumpkin pie...

The Demon Fires. According to Japanese folklore, they are the spirits born from the corpses of humans and animals, and are also said to be resentful people that have become fire. They appear as blue flames, often on rainy days in graveyards and in wetlands.

SCARECROW ALLEY 2015

Reaching the dubious safety of the junkyard gate, the path leading out dumps out not on the safety of a highway, but the tall, crackling rows of a fallow cornfield. After some time spent wandering through the stalks in the darkness, the path opens out into a short road lined on both sides with suspicious looking scarecrows. Weather and decay have rotted away some of the burlap and flannel of their clothing and the straw is mildew blackened. Perhaps it's a trick of the moonlight or the few lanterns hanging on the fence, but there seems to be something awfully realistic about these unmoving effigies. Only moments after you pass, two of the scarecrows fling themselves off their crosses, landing on the path behind you! Thankfully there are brighter lights ahead!

HAPPY EIGHTH BIRTHDAY CONJURE!

Eight years ago I took a chance on the Little Perfume House that Could. I collected all my books, notes, formulas, supplies and knowledge and decided to hang out my shingle. I learned how to make a website and quickly recorded all that I had worked on up to that point. The words, just sketches at first really, seemed to flow from my fingers. The site seemed to write itself and before I knew it, I was bowled over with orders, emails and messages from people all over the world. Conjure Oils' mission seemed to really resonate with people and I was happy and grateful to provide individual love and attention to everyone I could. As folks received their orders, they would order again and again. I received more messages of praise and inspiration. I was encouraged by friends, clients - even haters! They all allowed me to continue to grow commercially and creatively. My site design became more opulent and user friendly. I got one of my first large wholesale accounts and was able to afford an amazing printer so the labels now were stunning and in full color! (Aside from formulating perfumes, one of my favorite tasks is label design. At last, my Bachelors in Fine Arts comes in handy!)

Over time, more categories were added, Limited Editions concocted, evil plots hatched. I say these things not out of self aggrandizement, but out of a need to give recognition to all those who have interacted with Conjure in any way: all the purchases, the custom orders, the patience with the turn around time, the recommendations, the gifts sent, the books loaned, the decant circles, the reviews written, the blog entries about Conjure, the Conjure County forum (that I need to work on to get it going again), the Facebook fans, the Twitter followers, the hoarders, the retailers and the girl I saw in Gresham who had a Conjure Oils tote bag. I fucking love you all. Madly.

As Conjure continues to grow, it is my dream to be able to offer more hand made bath and body products consistently. I would also like to build up the Etsy store with back stock and to push my comfort zone and begin to vend at various cons and festivals, as I get repeated requests to do so. Well that was a hiatus, wasn't it? After Ming! died, I had a heart thick with grief and endured a pretty heavy duty surgery on my pancreas (I'm fine! No worries!) but the healing and recovery from it has been sheer hell. I can endure physical pain and discomfort, but it deeply affected my energy and endurance. Couple that with general malaise and you have a recipe that kills even the most stalwart creative person's juices.

But today I'm back, bitches! I am INSPIRED by today's Supreme Court ruling that legalizes and recognizes marriage equality in all 50 states. It's truly a great day in America when the Constitution is upheld allowing equal protection under the law, freedom and liberty to all who live here. May our society continue this patriotic and proud pace!

While we take today to rightfully celebrate this historic victory, tomorrow it's back to work! There are many issues that we must lavish with our love and attention. Today's victory is but a step on the constant incline on the journey to justice, equality and liberty.

All proceeds (after basic costs and expenses. Read: most) will be donated to Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Fund, an organization that works to bring an end to GLBT youth homelessness. A truly worthy cause!

Hallows blessings, happy Day of the Dead and All Souls and Full Moon!

Typically, Halloween is my favorite holiday, but this year it is tinged with sadness. My dear cat of thirteen tears, Ming!, died unexpectedly on the 12th of October. Shortly thereafter it seemed like many people were losing their beloved companions. I felt so heartbroken that I was overcome with the desire to craft a ritual oil to help soothe the heartache and show respect for the furry friends that have passed on. The resultant Rainbow Bridge oil has been calming and reassuring to me. I hope it can do the same for those whose hearts still sting over the loss of their beloved pets. They truly are family.

Spirits in the Twilight Garden takes the Mixtape collection in a bit of a different direction. Instead of a monthly installment, I'll start seasonal offerings that encapsulate the mood, the ambiance and the poetry of the season. Spirits in the Twilight Garden is a disembodied romp through the supernatural that we find during the end of October and the beginning of November. As the sun travels through the dark and mysterious sign of Scorpio, known for its associations with death, legacies, the underworld and the shadow aspects of our souls. Last month we were treated to an eclipse while both the sun and the moon were in Scorpio. It is not easy to have the darkness and the intensity of the sign thrust upon us. For me, I was tossed head long into the grieving process by losing my cat Ming! that put me into an existential tailspin from which I'm still trying to develop some equilibrium. The fact that Mercury is in Retrograde did little to help the matter.

I guess the moral of the story would be to be kind to one another. We don't know what they are going through, nor do they have any understanding where we're at emotionally. During these particularly dark and increasingly cold days, reach out in warmth, light and kindness. Be the comfort you seek. Be the light in the dark. Love always wins.

As with all other mixtapes, I don't own the songs, but though copyright laws and fair use, I am able to use the titles, band names and sample bits of lyrics. And because I don't like making money off of the intellectual property of others, I donate a portion of sales to MercyCorps. Holiday Contest!

For the past eight years now (8th annual, REALLY? I can't believe it!) Conjure Oils has offered a contest for people to come up with a suggestion for a Holiday blend of their own design. Each and every year, I get more and more stunning, wonderful and creative entries and I'm hoping that this year will be no different!

Conjure Oils Holiday Contest 2014!!

Here's the contest: Come up with a name, a description, some notes, a story, an image. It doesn't matter which - you can develop the entire concept or just come up with one or two things. From these submissions, I'll select several ideas to create for the Yule line this year.

The winners will receive a 5ml bottle of their scent as well as a 30 dollar gift certificate good for anything on the Conjure Oils website in 2015 - we'll even cover shipping! ...not to mention you'll receive temporary fame on the Limited Editions page as well and be the envy of all your family and friends.

In order for me to potentially use them, all entries will become the property of Conjure Oils so make sure you want them out in the world before you submit your ideas! By entering the contest, you agree to give me permission to use your idea for production. If you don't want your name associated with your entry, let me know, ok? I'll respect your privacy. MULTIPLE ENTRIES ARE OK - (because last year I said one entry per person and it was widely ignored! LOL! You can enter more than once, but keep it under 5, just so I can stay sane and somewhat organized, ok? :D)

Starting with the German Expressionists of the 1920's, we work our way through to the '00's. From Strange Geometries to Torture Porn, there will be something here for everyone!

DARK CINEMA: HALLOWS 2014

STRANGE GEOMETRIES

Films from the 1920's. German Expressionism at its best!

THE OLD DARK HOUSE

The supernatural elements of the 1930's Old Dark House style of movie were usually not supernatural at all but, spoiler alert, usually the doings of the rich inhabitants. And they would have got away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids!

No rest for the wicked! The darkness of the Dot Room gives way to a brightly lit funhouse of warped mirrors, garishly painted arches, and flashing strobes. In the smoky chaos, yellow-fanged mad clowns dart, popping out of the peripheries with honking horns, crazed laughter, or bloodied hand tools. Withered corpses bound cruelly into exaggerated poses line the walls, mimicking tight wire acts, animal tamers, and side-show acts, each one more nightmarish than the next.

MARA 2014
Mara is the Buddhist personification of Evil. Also known as Papiyan, ("more wicked") Mara (meaning "thirst" or "death") made every attempt possible to deter Siddhartha on his path toward Enlightenment by using armies of temptations such as: lust, hunger, thirst, sloth, cowardice, pride and fame, among others.

VORTEX TUNNEL 2014
You lose your unholy pursuit in the corn, finally reaching the safety of the lights you saw in the distance… only to find out someone has set up a carnival out here in the corn. The music piping from inside the great tent is cheery, but somehow off and disturbing, the notes off key and cracked turning their perky melody into a tune of complete derangement. A gaunt man in a ringmaster's costume stands by the entrance, accompanied by a shapely woman in spangled tights and a very nearly blank doll's mask. He grins wickedly, beckoning you to pass through the curtains held by his assistant and into the swirling darkness within.

Inside, you find yourself on a narrow walkway inside a tunnel painted with crazy psychedelic patterns. The motion of the tunnel makes the walkway twist and writhe, all but forcing you to close your eyes just to get through this fun-house of terror without falling down.

Sweet funnel cakes defiled by chaotic swirls of vanilla ice cream, topped with corrupt caramel syrup and washed down with hootch.

I thought it was interesting when I came across these unique Greek words for different variations for love to represent our Lupertine collection for 2014. I have crafted these very potent oils not only to be gorgeously fragrant, but to embody the properties of each type of love. 2014 AND BLACK MOON 2014

2013 proved to be a challenging year for me. Despite the highlight of having Sebastian in April, I was presented with a host of post partum complications that landed me in the hospital multiple times for varying stays. The shortest being a couple of days and the longest, a month. Now that I'm medicated, I hope these episodes will reduce and that I get some of my vim and vigor back! (In case you were wondering, it's also why there was no Yule update. It's hard to compose perfume and not have access to my studio!)

So you'll forgive me if I'm a tad boisterous in wishing you a wonderful 2014! I'm excited for what this year will bring. I'm no fool - I'm not going to tempt fate and say that it couldn't get any worse than 2013 (because it can!) So I'd like to set the intention of 2014 to one of healing. And tonight's super new moon in Capricorn will set the tone for the internal magick that needs to take place if we're to heal ourselves, our relationships, our planet, our politics, our country (where ever you are), or our cosmos. It's a mighty undertaking that begins inside and from there, extends out reverberating infinite and eternal.

THE BOOK OF HALLOWE'EN - HALLOWS 2013

At long last! Hallows 2013 is LIVE and ENORMOUS at Conjure Oils! It's the time of year that I most look forward to creating and because of that I ~~sometimes~~ often let my inherent perfectionism get the better of me! But like Alfred E. Newman, I don't worry because I think, and I hope you do as well, that it's worth the wait. Truly, you're getting my very best and strongest work in exchange for the few extra days it takes for me to polish the collection until it's sparkling!

This year, I've taken my inspiration from The Book of Hallowe'en, written by Ruth E. Kelley, published in 1919. It is a fascinating little tome that covers the history of the holiday dating back to the sun worshipping Druids leading up to the observation of the holiday as it was celebrated at the turn of the last century! I'm sure that you'll find this year's Hallows update to be poetic, quirky, whimsical and steeped in Victoriana - just as you've come to expect from Conjure!

SHIPPING

Because we're getting Hallows off with a bit of a late start this year, know that all Hallows orders placed will be shipped within FIVE business days, so you can enjoy your seasonal sniffies in a timely fashion! HALLOWS RESURRECTED 2013

Kwaidan is a collection of stories written in 1904 by Lafcadio Hearn shortly before his demise. To say he was a Japanophile is a bit of an understatement, as he has written volume after volume on the mythology and spirituality of Japanese culture at the turn of the century.

Like the 1965 eponymous film based on the work of Hearn, we've selected four stories to give you a glimpse into the demons and ghosts that haunt the land of the rising sun and to send a chill down your spine in the process! Some of the stories can be on the long side. Grab a cup of tea (or sake!) and settle in for a thrill. I guarantee it will be worth your time!

The text for the stories is taken from Sacred Texts. com (the best site ever for public domain spiritual works) and the illustrations are by Yasumasa Fujita from a hand made copy of Kwaidan crafted in 1932.

THE AUGUST ASSEMBLY
Everywhere above the tombs, the fires of the dead were burning, like candles.

Fierce and ghostly: Conjure Oils' own crimson dragon's blood accord, clove, ginger and cassia are softened with Japanese red musk, red mandarin and luminous white tea.

THE BATTLE AT DAN-NO-URA
Hoichi lifted up his voice, and chanted the chant of the fight on the bitter sea,--wonderfully making his biwa to sound like the straining of oars and the rushing of ships, the whirr and the hissing of arrows, the shouting and trampling of men, the crashing of steel upon helmets, the plunging of slain in the flood.

Black and starless skies coupled with turbulent and bloodied waters: Bruised musk, dried black currant, antiqued patchouli, murky gray amber, maritime juniper, bois de rose and the tormented memories of blood soaked metal, fathomless grief and boundless loss.

MIMI-NASHI-HOICHI
From the time of his adventure, he was known only by the appellation of Mimi-nashi-Hoichi: "Hoichi-the-Earless." A blind man famed for his skill in recitation and in playing upon the biwa. It is said that when he sang even the goblins [kijin] could not refrain from tears.

The fading scent of a summer night thick with the tricks of demonic forces: Hoichi sits in silent meditation surrounded by the fragrance of an ancient moribund garden at the season's end. A spectral osmanthus blossom is carried crisply on the night air accompanied by the crumbling of Japanese maple leaves crunching under the ghostly samurai's foot as he draws near. The polished teak wood biwa rests silently next to Hoichi, reflecting the glow of the last firefly as the black inky musk of inscribed prayers is lifted heavenward propelled by fear and the body heat generated by Hoichi's trembling heart. The cold metallic tang of blood congealing on Hoicihi's head completes this ghostly portrait.

ONI BI
The Demon Fires

JIKININKI
I have been obliged to feed upon the corpses of the people who die in this district: every one of them I must devour in the way that you saw last night.

Dried blood musk, the chilled air of October, bleached bone and offerings of incense, chrysanthemums and toasted rice.

THE RUINOUS ANJITSU
On the top of a hill lighted by the last rays of the sun, one of those little hermitages, called anjitsu, which are built for solitary priests.

Hinoki, black myrrh, vanilla husk, orris root, bergamot, yuzu and night blooming jasmine tea.

AN ITINERANT SOBA-SELLER
Was it anything like THIS that she showed you?" cried the soba-man, stroking his own face--which therewith became like unto an Egg.

MUJINA
Then that O-jochu turned around, and dropped her sleeve, and stroked her face with her hand;--and the man saw that she had no eyes or nose or mouth!

WEEPING AT THE MOAT
A woman crouching by the moat, all alone, and weeping bitterly.

MOSAKU & MINOKICHI
In a village of Musashi Province, there lived two woodcutters: Mosaku and Minokichi.

Mahogany, Mirabelle plum, red amber, golden sandalwood, smoked patchouli and sugared pomegranate.

O-YUKI
Even as she screamed, her voice became thin, like a crying of wind;--then she melted into a bright white mist that spired to the roof-beams, and shuddered away through the smoke-hold... Never again was she seen.

White tea, crystalline amber, spun sugar, oleander, white opium and stargazer lily.

YUKI-ONNA
The white woman bent down over him, lower and lower, until her face almost touched him; and he saw that she was very beautiful,--though her eyes made him afraid.

Wind whipped sugared vanilla snow, black orchid, ginger tea and ume blossom.

Resurrected for 2013

It seems that the end of October and early November is the time of year where many cultures have holy days honoring death. From Los Dias de los Muertos to Samhain tide this has been the season to honor, revere and even celebrate the role death has in our lives. Using three works of art as inspiration, we are offering a trilogy of fragrances to pay tribute to the ancestors, to show respect for the power of the spirit of Iku (Yoruban personification of Death) and to the metaphysical associations that are part and parcel to the concept: transitions, inevitable change and destruction that clears the way to creation. Maferefun Oya, Kali, Hecate, Set, Baron Samedi and the Ghede, Egun, Yewa and all other spirits who work and exist in such a nebulous and liminal space fraught with a spectrum of human emotion: from the depths of suffering and grief stemming from senseless and tragic loss to the heights of grace and light embedded in those moments where death is a release from pain and an ascension into the Great Mystery.

The fragrances have been formulated to be worn layered together, but they are perfectly suitable to be worn individually

Note the Memento Mori symbolism of the hourglass reminding the soldier that his time on earth is finite and the skull in the bottom left corner confirming the inevitable to us all.

DEATH THE STRANGLER - First Outbreak of Cholera at a Parisian Masquerade Ball in 1831: Death pays a visit to a party and the results are devastating. Playing mock fiddle with bones and surrounded by corpses, Death stands centrally while the doomed musicians attempt an escape in the top left. Seated on the stairs is the personification of Cholera dressed in Egyptian finery.

DEATH THE FRIEND: Death rings the church bells for the ringer who sits in an apparent deathly repose in the top right. The sun rise out the window reminding the viewer that the cycle of life will continue and transformation is assured.

Maybe it's the long winter looming around the corner? Perhaps it's the lengthening of the evening hours that signal the death of summer? Perchance it's simply sorrow for the lost Lenore? I couldn't tell you. But Poe's passion for the macabre (and maybe the love of laudanum) have led you down a dark path this evening. Will the sun ever rise again? In this midnight dreary mood, the answer is unlikely.

CONJURE OILS 6TH ANNIVERSARY!

Happy anniversary, Conjure! You're six now. Six whole years.

SIX YEARS?!? Wow.

That means if Conjure were a child, it would be a very fragrant first grader!

In all seriousness though, these past six years have been so many things: amazing, scary, wonderful, terrifying, encouraging, educational, silly, serious, seriously freaky and mostly fun!

Six years ago, I was just a little Iyawo fresh off the mat with nothing more than a book of formulas, ideas and dreams, a crate of oils, a heart filled with passion and a directive from Oshun to make perfumes for the people. Six years later, I have over a thousand formulas, enough components to fill a small aircraft hangar, and more heart and passion that you can shake a stick at. I also have love. SOL NIGER
In the alchemical Great Work, or Magnum Opus dating back to the first century, Sol Niger (the Black Sun) is the first phase in the physical and spiritual transmutation that creates the Philosopher's Stone and leads one on a journey to individuation. In stage one, we're met with putrefaction and decomposition. Carl Jung attributed this stage two distinct psychological states.

In the first state, we have unio naturalis, a state of imbeddedness where the ego is enmeshed with its surroundings. Here there is no separation between the self and the other. "Ignorance is bliss" is a good way to describe this realm.

In the next state, nigredo or the blackening, we find the dark night of the soul where one becomes acutely, painfully aware of the separation between the self and the other. This gives rise to the recognition of the shadow self and the chaos and melancholy that comes with it.

However, all is not lost to despair! This darkness gives way to the next stage, albedo, the light at the end of the tunnel and the ascent from the depths of darkness. But that is another Sol for another day...

On June 23, we were treated to the magick of a super moon! As she travels in her elliptical journey around the earth, there is a point in the moon's orbit where she is closest to the earth, or perigee. To those of us admiring the moon from earth during this time, she appears 14% larger and 30% brighter, the tides are at their highest and with the human body being approximately 60% water, one can only imagine the influence the lunar tides have over us all!

Oklahoma Benefit - Hekua Yansa and Salvo Leri are Resurrected.

Hello Everyone,

A two mile wide tornado touched down Monday near Oklahoma City, OK taking with it a heartbreaking 51 souls, 20 of whom were children. The deep sadness and lasting destruction that these monster storms leave in their wake are enduring and cause us, the witnesses of the devastation, to wring our hands wishing that there was just one more extra thing we could do to help.

I feel obligated and lucky to be able to use Conjure to raise money when these travesties happen, so tonight I've decided to resurrect Hekua Yansa and Salvo Leri - two scents that were originally created to benefit those touched by Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012 (and we were able to donate $280 to the Red Cross! YAY! and THANK YOU!)

All proceeds after cost of manufacture will be donated to the Red Cross where it will be used to provide relief from those pummeled by the ravages of the Oklahoma tornado.

These are $20 per bottle, 100% of the money made from these will be donated. Even production costs. Not one penny will be kept (except shipping because, well, shipping.) HEKUA YANSA

Oya, also known as Yansa is the Mother of Nine. She is the Rainbow in the sky, the Queen of the hurricane, the tornado, the cemetery gates and she watches over our Egun (our ancestors). She rules over the winds of abrupt change; she destroys to create. Don't try to fight Oya, metamorphosis is inevitable.

African musk, wind whipped white amber, torrential rain and the black plums Oya demands as adimu (food offering).

SALVO LERI

"Salvo Leri" is Lukumi for "Save my head" In the Santeria faith it is customary when one walks pass the cemetery gates to cross your arms over your chest and salute Oya saying, "Hekua Yansa, Salvo Leri!" Or, I salute you, Oya, please save my head! In Lukumi faith, the head is the seat of the soul, or the Ori. To lose one's head is tantamount to death. A good head can save a whole town. A bad head can destroy one just as easily. Let's keep our heads about us during these trying times.

PACZKI DAY 2013!

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND ! Celebrate Fat Tuesday Conjure style with our NINE Polish pastry inspired perfume oils! Growing up in Southeastern Michigan like I did, it wasn't hard to find a box of these delectable sweet treats! For those who don't know what a paczki is, (pronounced "poonchky") it's like a large huge doughnut stuffed to the brim with various intoxicatingly sweet fillings ranging from traditional plum and rose hip jam to more modern conventions like Bavarian custard, apple or raspberry. Though it's no typical doughnut - the paczki is sweeter and spongier. They can be topped with powdered or granulated sugar, or with icing. Truly, the mortal doughnut pales in comparison!

Paczki are a convenient way to get all of the sugar, fat and temptation out of the house before the sparse season of Lent rears it head. Fortunately, we've conjured a great way to get the paczki experience throughout whilst avoiding the calories as well! It's like magic! Indulge!

Hello Everyone!

I hope this winter has been kind to you, and to those of you below the equator, I know this summer has been a cruel one. Soon, the seasons will change and we will long for the heat when we're freezing and dream of the days we were shivering when the mercury shoots to the triple digits.

I've been extremely busy this past month. If you are awaiting an order, please know that it's going out this week. Because I'm VERY PREGNANT and it's hard for me to move, I have to rely on the kindness of my helper elves to get orders out. My helper has been busy getting her school and work schedule dialed in so she could help me. Now she's available twice a week and things will run much smoother on out. It's kind of humbling to have to have someone help me to this extent. I mean if Lucy still was unable to put her own socks and shoes on, she'd be barefoot all the time! In fact, she helps me find my boots most days!

There are three parts to this Lupertine update. First, we have Selections from the Book of Love. A fragrance collection inspired by the myriad ways we have to express love, loss and desire. Second, we have our Mardi Gras collection, the Conjure Krewe! Six darkly playful scents to mark the revelry of Fat Tuesday and the debaucherous fun that comes before the austerity of Lent. Inspired by the comical figures found within Commedia dell'arte, Doktor Schnabel von Rom and just a little Steampunk for good measure, these figures promise to delight, entertain and disturb just slightly! Plus if you order the whole set of the Krewe, you'll get a free Gris Gris bag made with love and spirit by yours truly! Which brings us to the third aspect of this update: Gris Gris Bags! Similar in nature to a Mojo Bag, but based in the Vodoun tradition (as opposed to Hoodoo in the case of the Mojo) the Gris Gris bag is a prayer in a pouch. It contains symbolically and spiritually potent items that create an energetic synergy to help you fulfill your desires. In concert with my Egun (the spirits of my ancestors whom I work with closely) I have designed nine different Gris Gris styles for you to choose from! From Love and Sex to Protection and Dark Arts, I'm sure there will be something for everyone! They'll only be available for a month, so be sure to get one while you can!

This update is on the large side because I'm trying to wind down in anticipation of the birth of my son. (He still doesn't have a name, but he'll get one eventually, I'm sure!) He's due April 16th and I'd like to have a pregnant pause (see what I did there?) and take a break from April to the end of May. I'll be open for orders during that time, but there will be no summer update. I am working on some special perfumes to celebrate the birth, but that will be small and manageable for me. The next large update you can expect from Conjure will be the Hallows 2013 update.

I'm telling you all this so you can plan accordingly. All orders placed before February 4th will be shipped for a timely Valentine's Day arrival. Now that I have reliable help once again, I'm going to try and keep a short leash on the turn around time just in case Junior decides to arrive unexpectedly!

SELECTIONS FROM THE BOOK OF LOVE - LUPERTINE 2013

Sometimes we lack the words to express the depth or essence of what is thought or felt so very deep within our souls. We string together strands of nouns, adjectives and verbs hoping for just the right sequence to express the secrets buried in our hearts. We imagine songs and poetry or visual art in an attempt at a melodic, abstract or symbolic explanation.

Language is the art of the tongue acting in concert with the heart and mind. Some languages are clumsy in their presentation of complex theories and emotions while others are more graceful, playful or efficient. In crafting this series, I wondered what it would look like if all the human expressions of love were assembled in one place; a proverbial Book of Love in a fashion. As I searched for words that conveyed ideas of love, longing and loss in a unique way, I stumbled upon a couple blog articles investigating the same subject and was inspired by what I had found. All of the words in this collection are non English in their origin and while English is my native language, I find that it often lacks the elegance and grace found in many other tongues.

In the end, what I take away from this collection is the commonality of love, loss and desire. We all ache, yearn, have our hearts broken and share the bliss of love - all evident in the myriad ways we have to say, sing or recreate our inner worlds.
