Register to Vote January 5 at the Library

Are you registered to vote? Do you want to change your party, your address, your name?
The regular deadline for registering to vote in the February primary election is Tuesday, January 5. You can do that at the Glenview Village Hall, Finance Department, 1225 Waukegan Road, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Evening registration will be held by the League of Women Voters at the Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road on Tuesday, January 5 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Bring two pieces of identification with your current legal name and address (one must be a picture ID.) If you are a naturalized citizen, bring your naturalization papers or a valid passport.

Parking options during construction include the Library’s South Lot, right across the street at the corner of Washington and Glenview Road; it includes 3 handicapped accessible spots. 10 additional spaces are conveniently located across the RR tracks on East Railroad Avenue, near the Glenview House. 4 more handicapped accessible spaces are located in the alley behind the Library, off Washington Street.

Go to the to the Village of Skokie H1N1 vaccination clinic reservation system at http://www.skokie.org/ to reserve your spot. A total of 5,000 reservations will be accepted for each of the clinics that will be held December 9 from noon to 8 p.m. and on December 6 and December 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All clinics will be held at Oakton Community Center, 4701 Oakton Street.Due to the national shortage of H1N1 vaccine, these clinics are only open to individuals in priority groups that include pregnant women, individuals between 6 months to 24 years of age, people age 25 to 64 with underlying medical conditions (such as asthma or diabetes), healthcare workers and caregivers of children under 6 months of age.Individuals 65 years of age or older are not considered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be in the priority groups even if they have an underlying medical condition. Therefore, at this time vaccinations will NOT be available to persons in that age group. Each person seeking a vaccination must schedule an appointment. Please create a separate appointment for each individual who will be receiving a vaccine, regardless of that person's age (even infants). Emergency Contact Database registration is available through the Illinois Secretary of State's Web site.

This new program allows any individual who holds an Illinois driver’s license or identification card to voluntarily register their emergency contact numbers in the event they are ever involved in an emergency situation, such as a traffic crash, and unable to communicate directly with law enforcement. The information, once registered on the database, is stored securely so that it is only accessible by law enforcement via LEADS (Law Enforcement Agencies Data System).

Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving. Later, President Franklin Roosevelt clarified that Thanksgiving should always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping, never on the occasional fifth Thursday.

Golf Road to Be Closed This Weekend

The Illinois Department Of Transportation (IDOT) will close Golf Road completely at the Metra railroad bridge from 5 a.m. on Saturday, November 21 through 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 22. The full closure is required for the removal of the existing center span steel beams. If you're heading east on Golf, take Waukegan north to Glenview Road or Lake Avenue or south to Dempster. If you're heading west, go north along Harms to Glenview Road or Lake Avenue or south along Skokie Boulevard to Dempster.

I recently read an article on a pro-environment blog about libraries being a green alternative to book stores and I started thinking that our library is to print what Whole Foods Market is to organic food. Every day our library recirculates books, magazines and newspapers instead of printing new ones thus saving trees, ink and manufacturing pollution. Each library shelf offers hundreds of choices in recycled materials and each time a book or magazine or newspaper is read or checked out, one less is printed. If you are recycling paper from home, you should also be using your library card. Sure you may have to wait a bit to get the latest bestseller, but your patience helps the planet. What’s better for the earth, waiting for a week for your neighbor to finish reading a book, or each of us buying a copy? Just by using your library card you are going green and helping to save the planet. Need to Dispose of Unwanted Medications and Sharps?

In partnership with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County, the Village will once again be serving as a drop-off point for unwanted medications and sharps (needles or lancets) next Friday, November 6. Between 9 a.m. and noon, bring your items to the lobby of Village Hall, 1225 Waukegan Road. But before you do, here are a few reminders:

This is a self-service program. Residents place their own items in the SWANNC bins.
Controlled substances/ narcotics are not accepted.
All drugs must be in their original containers with the labels attached. Black out personal information. SWANCC can't accept unidentified medicines or baggies of loose pills.
Sharps (syringes, needles, lancets) must be in proper containers: either a sharps container or a rigid, transparent container (these can be provided).
This program is for individual consumers only--it is not for commercial, retail or medical entities.

The Images of America series book, Glenview, by Beverly Roberts Dawson, discusses the arrival of the first Europeans in South Northfield, which became Glenview, and continues through the first 70 years following incorporation.

"John Melzer immigrated to South Northfield from Germany and bought the family home in 1871...Three generations of the Melzers are pictured here. Meet Charlotte Melzer, a descendant of this founding family of Glenview, and hear her stories, on Sunday, October 18, 2-4 PM in the Maynard Room of the Glenview Public Library, as we celebrate National Family History month by celebrating the family history of Glenview's founding families.

New Parking Machines to be Installed at Metra Stations

Over the course of next week, the Village of Glenview will be installing new parking machines at the Downtown and North Glenview Metra Stations. All machines should be in place by October 19. The machines will still take cash -- and, for the first time, will take credit cards. However, they will no longer take free Village-issued debit cards.
Not sure you'll be able to spend the balance on your card in time? The Village will be providing reimbursement up to $60 through December 1. There are several ways to request a refund, but your old debit card must be returned to the Village in order to have the refund processed. Check the Village website for all the details.
