You must be at least 17 years of age and weigh a minimum of 110 lbs. Please give blood and replenish the supply for our community. Postal Service to Change Service Prices

Beginning Sunday, Jan. 22, it will cost just a penny more to mail letters to any location in the United States.

It will be the first price change for First-Class stamps (Forever stamps) in more than two and a half years. However, customers can continue to mail letters at today’s prices by purchasing their ‘Forever’ stamps before Jan. 22.

The ‘Forever’ stamps were created to help consumers ease the transition during price changes.

The new single-piece First-Class mail pricing, effective Jan. 22, includes: letters, one-cent increase to 45 cents; postcards, three-cent increase to 32 cents; Letters to Canada or Mexico, five-cent increase to 85 cents and letters to other international destinations, seven-cent in-crease to $1.05.

Letter pricing is all for one-ounce letters.

Prices will also change for other mailing services, including standard mail, periodicals, package services and extra services.

While actual percentage price increases for various products and services vary, the overall average price increase across all mailing services is capped by law at 2.1 percent, the rate of inflation calculation based on the Consumer Price Index.

New for all customers is a three-month pricing option to rent post office boxes, perfect for people on the move and others who might need a post office box for a short period of time.

April 17th Tax Deadline

The Internal Revenue Service today opened the 2012 tax filing season by announcing that taxpayers have until April 17 to file their tax returns. The IRS encourages taxpayers to e-file as it is the best way to ensure accurate tax returns and get faster refunds.

Taxpayers will have until Tuesday, April 17 to file their 2011 tax returns and pay any tax due because April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls this year on Monday, April 16. According to federal law, District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way that federal holidays do; therefore, all taxpayers will have two extra days to file this year. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Oct. 15 to file their 2011 tax returns.

The group brings together volunteers and communities to improve the homes and lives of elderly, disabled and low-income residents. Applications must be filed by Feb. 1. New Laws and Fees for 2012

Among the new laws and fees that begin Jan. 1, 2012 are these that can impact Glenview residents:
• The number of electronic products banned from Illinois landfills expands from four to 17. For the list and suggestions on how to dispose of unwanted video games, VCRs, DVD players and the like, go here.
• Illinois law will require back seat passengers to wear seat belts, regardless of their age or seating position. The move will strengthen the State of Illinois' current seat belt law, which requires passengers in the front seat and anyone under the age of 19 year old to wear a properly secure seat belt. The new law exempts riders in buses, emergency vehicles and those in the backseat of taxis. For more,go here.
• Tolls nearly double on Illinois tollways to pay for a $12.1 billion program of expanding and building highways. Basic I-Pass toll rates will rise from 40 cents to 75 cents, with those who use cash continuing to pay double what I-Pass users do. For more, go here.

Don't Give to Burglars

The winter holiday season--and the presence of presents being bought for celebrations--often mean a rise in the number of reported vehicle burglaries. The Glenview Police Department suggests you take steps to keep from having your car damaged and/or belongings stolen. Here are a few tips to avoid being a victim of car burglary:
1. Bring valuables from your car into your home.
2. If you need to leave smaller, less valuable item(s) in your car overnight, keep them out of view by locking the item(s) in a glove box, center console or trunk.
3. While shopping use a cover to keep items left in a visible trunk out of view.
4. Lock the doors to your car, but don't rely on pressing the automatic lock on your key ring without verifying the doors are locked or lock the doors manually.
5. Don't leave the garage door opener in a car parked in the driveway overnight for a thief to access other cars in the garage.

Holiday Song Fest

Overnight parking ban begins Dec. 1

Overnight parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. is prohibited on all public streets in the Village of Glenview from December 1 through March 31. This requirement facilitates snow plowing and public safety. In the event there is no means of off-street parking, on-street-parking permits may be granted upon application to the Glenview Police Department. Glenview Holiday in the Park and Parade

Glenview's business community officially kicks off the holiday season on Saturday, Novemer 26, with the 17th annual Holiday in the Park and Parade. The event begins at noon with a parade starting at Glenview Road and Church Street and ending at Jackman Park, at Lehigh Avenue and Prairie Street. The parade features Santa and Mrs. Claus, the Medinah Shriners on "flying carpets," the Glenbrook South Marching Band and other floats and units representing local businesses, service organizations and Scout troops. At Jackman Park, visitors can purchase hot chocolate, hot cider and other refreshments and have their pictures taken with Santa.

The Glenview Chamber of Commerce also wants you to know that Saturday, Nov. 26, has been designated "Small Business Saturday," a promotion designed to encourage shopping at small businesses. For more information, click here.

Village President Kerry Cummings is among the speakers at the Veterans Day Observance organized by the Joseph M. Sesterhenn American Legion Post 166 beginning at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11, at the Veterans Memorial Plaza at Glenview Road and River Drive. Village Hall offices will be open on Veterans Day, but the Public Works facility, 1333 Shermer Road, will be closed.

Drug Take Back Day

The federal Drug Enforcement Agency is sponsoring a National Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, to collect unused or expired prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines for safe disposal. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District will collect pharmaceuticals at the gatehouse of the North Side Water Reclamation Plant, 3500 Howard St., Skokie, and the Cook County Sheriff's Office collection is at the Skokie Court House, 5600 W. Old Orchard Road. The Lake County Sheriff's Department is also accepting controlled substances at its site: Beach Park Village Hall, 11270 W. Wadsworth Road, Beach Park. Disposing of old medicines safely keeps others from abusing them without your knowledge and keeps pharmaceuticals out of drinking water and wastewater.

Glenview offers an unwanted drugs and sharps collection from 9 a.m. to noon the first Friday of every month. The next collection day at Village Hall, 1225 Waukegan Road, is Nov. 4.

Glenview Street Survey Under Way

Weather permitting, Infrastructure Management Services LLC of Rolling Meadows will have a van traversing all 165 miles of Glenview's roadways through next week to update the Village’s pavement evaluation system. The Village wants to ensure its data completely and accurately reflects current conditions. Surveys of surface conditions will note the amount of cracking, rut depth, roughness and texture of the pavement. Deflection testing will determine soundness of the pavement base. The data will be used by Village staff to set priorities for the 2013-17 Capital Improvement Program.

Fire Department Open House

Plan to stop by Station 14 of the Glenview Fire Department for their Open House on Sunday, October 23 from 11 AM - 4 PM. Station 14 is located at 2250 Patriot Boulevard in Glenview. Included in the Open House will be station tours, refreshments, fire truck tours and live demonstrations.

Skunk Population Increases Locally

The smell of skunk is permeating Glenview and we’re not suffering alone. The Chicago Wildlife News reports the Chicago area skunk population has increased eight of the last ten years, citing the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which monitors the population through a road-kill index. Animal care and control experts recommend homeowners “skunk-proof” their property by blocking animals from getting underneath porches and bushes. Glenview’s animal control officer occasionally refers residents to a listing of private companies to remove animals from their properties, but historically has not handled wildlife. Glenview does not trap and release wildlife due to IDNR regulations and the likelihood of skunk sprays, which can shoot up to 10 feet and temporarily impair vision. Volunteers Sought for Planting Project

The Village of Glenview's Natural Resources Commission is looking for helpers to install plants at the Village's new permeable concrete parking lot west of the intersection of Compass Road and Lehigh Avenue. The more than 3,000 plants will help the lot absorb and filter storm water, to minimize water pollution and runoff. The planting project, which is being overseen by an Eagle Scout candidate, takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Tools, gloves and snacks will be provided.
