Gaithersburg Officially Re-Opens Refurbished Water Park

Phase I Renovations Unveiled

Gaithersburg, MD (May 25, 2012) On Thursday, May 24, 2012, Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz was joined by City Council Vice President Ryan Spiegel and Council Members Henry Marraffa and Mike Sesma, other dignitaries, and staff from the City of Gaithersburg in officially cutting the ribbon and re-opening the newly refurbished and enhanced Water Park.

Located at 512 South Frederick Avenue, within the 57 acre campus of Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm, the Water Park facility offers a safe and active environment that is used by families, summer camps and day care providers throughout the region. Because of the City�s commitment to preventive maintenance, the life expectancy of the pool has surpassed expectation. In 2010, a Facility Study was conducted and several items were found in need of replacement.

�With the help of funding through Maryland�s Program Open Space, our goal in renovating the Water Park was to ensure its viability for at least the next 20 years,� said Mayor Katz. �It�s a much loved and heavily used facility, enjoying more than 80,000 visits annually, including 1,000 youngsters splashing away during our popular summer camp programs.�

Renovations to both the Main and Splash pools include the installation of new tile and pool plaster and the replacement of the ceramic gutter systems with ones made of stainless steel. The Main Pool was converted from a five lane x 25 yard swim area to a six lane x 25 meter competition pool. New gelcoating and paint were applied to the two fiberglass water slides, and concrete walkways now replace the brick ones. A UV/germicidal enhanced water filtration system has also been installed.

New play features include palm trees, the addition of two water slides, tumble buckets, floatable features, and bubblers. A complete redesign of the Splash pool includes increased surface area, incorporated spray ground amenities, and a custom in-water play structure, with open and closed flume slides, that pays homage to the state of Maryland with Black-Eyed Susan and Blue Heron play features. Shade structures were also installed in the Splash pool area.

The project consists of two phases of renovations, with Phase I now complete. Phase II, which will take place during Fiscal Year 2013, includes other recommended improvements to increase customer service/safety and implement energy efficiency upgrades through mechanical, electrical, and plumbing measures in the Water Park Entrance, Bath House, Snack Bar, Slide Tower, and other features.

The Water Park�s main pool continues to offer shallow water play and recreational swimming. The main attraction is still the double-flume slide, which sends swimmers down from a 38 foot tower. In addition to the new and improved splash pool, complete with fountains and sprays to entertain the little ones, the Water Park also has a carpeted sun deck, grassy areas with picnic tables, and a snack bar plaza operated by Boardwalk Fries. The Water Park operates on a pre-season schedule starting Saturday, May 26 at noon. The full summer season begins June 9, with the pool opening daily at 11 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Gaithersburg Camera Club Exhibits at Kentlands Mansion

Gaithersburg, MD � (May 24, 2012) - The City of Gaithersburg presents The Photographer�s Eye, a juried exhibit featuring images by members of the Gaithersburg Camera Club, at Kentlands Mansion from May 25 through July 22, 2012. The public is invited to an artists� reception on Tuesday, May 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This exhibit, showcasing the broad range of talent of the GCC, was juried by Mark van Bergh.

The Gaithersburg Camera Club serves upper Montgomery County and its almost 150 members range from beginning to professional photographers. The GCC regularly exhibits throughout the Washington, DC area. All levels of experience are represented in this show including those who are exhibiting for the first time along with award-winning photographers. Landscape, architectural, nature, portrait, and abstract photography will be featured.

The Gaithersburg Camera Club meets twice a month, and members and guests may attend all meetings. The educational meeting is on the second Monday and features a speaker who informs members on a specific area of photography. The competition meeting is on the fourth Monday. Members are allowed to enter their photographs for review by a certified judge. Awards are presented based on the judge�s decisions. Members may also talk with judges on competition night. Awarded to Four High School Students

Gaithersburg, MD � May 22, 2012. This year four inspiring students received a total of $5,000 in scholarship funds through the W. Edward Bohrer, Jr. Memorial CHARACTER COUNTS! Scholarship program. Presented in partnership with The W. Edward Bohrer Memorial Fund, DRS Signal Solutions and Rodgers Consulting, Inc., the scholarships are named for former Mayor Bohrer, under whose leadership the City adopted the CHARACTER COUNTS! program in 1996. The program rewards City students who embody the Six Pillars of CHARACTER COUNTS! - trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

Since they were first awarded in 1998, 63 high school seniors have received more than $130,000 in CHARACTER COUNTS! scholarships to help with their college tuition. The following excerpts are taken from the 2012 scholarship winner essays, Kathy Gomez, Franck Noumedem, Nadia Palacios, and Laura Sureff, sharing their thoughts on CHARACTER COUNTS!

Arlington, Va., High School Student Katie Way Takes Top Honors

Gaithersburg, Md. � May 19, 2012 � �Lots of people have heard of love at first sight, but this was something else entirely. Hate at first sight would be close, but not quite right; �Hate� didn�t evoke the deep, burning feeling that Arthur felt in the center of his chest the first time he saw the kitten. Loathing at first sight. That was more like it.�

So begins the winning tale from the 2012 Gaithersburg Book Festival short story writing contest for high school students.

The three winners, who read their stories after being announced at the Gaithersburg Book Festival this afternoon, were:

First Place: Katie Way of Arlington, Va., a junior at Yorktown High School
Second Place: Halcyon Ruskin of Kensington, Md., a freshman at Albert Einstein High School
Third Place: R.E. Potter of Delaplane, Va., a homeschooled junior

�Neither of us could believe we selected a winning story that was told from the perspective of a cat,� said award-winning mystery author Brad Parks, who selected the winner along with fellow 2012 featured author Jennifer Miller. �But right away we had to know: Was Arthur the cat going to kill the new kitten? The suspense really pulled us through the narrative and Katie�s voice was absolutely charming. I only hope she has more stories to tell.�

In addition, this year the festival organizers implemented a voting system on the finalist stories so that festival attendees could vote for a �Fan Favorite.� The winner was Andrew Qian of Boyds, Md., a junior at Clarksburg High School.

Howard County, Md.: Jennifer Baik and Jing Wang from Centennial High School
Montgomery County, Md.; Alice Yanhong Lu from Thomas Wootton High School; Jasmine Smith, Phoebe Temkin and Lily Xu from Richard Montgomery High School and Cary Spector from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School

The contest drew 141 entries from 14 jurisdictions: Anne Arundel County, Arlington County, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Fairfax County, Fauquier County, Frederick County, Gloucester County, Howard County, Loudoun County, Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Prince William County and Washington, D.C.

Three local volunteers served as round one judges, narrowing the stories down to 13 finalists in a blind judging process. Two published authors, who were featured authors at the festival this year, served as the round two judges: Parks, author of �The Girl Next Door: A Mystery,� �Eyes of the Innocent� and �Faces of the Gone,� and Miller, author of �The Year of the Gadfly.�

Entertainment Series Launches on June 1

Gaithersburg, MD � (May 18, 2012) Summer in the City never sounded so good, with a wide variety of amusing, entertaining and uplifting performances gracing the stage at the City Hall Concert Pavilion. From a Jimmy Buffet tribute band to Reptile�s Alive to outdoor movies in your own backyard, the �Gaithersburg Outdoors� entertainment series offers summer fun for the whole family. All performances are free.

Select Friday evenings in Olde Towne will be alive with music and family entertainment. The whole thing kicks off on June 1 with the Beach Bumz, a lively Jimmy Buffet tribute band taking the stage at 7 p.m. James Brown fans will enjoy the Big Payback, paying homage on July 6 at 7 p.m. Bring the whole family out for Friday Family Fun Nights, featuring School�s Out Hoopla! on June 15 from 5 � 9 p.m., a Circus Celebration on July 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and an End of Summer Block Party on August 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The air will be filled with delightful sounds and important life lessons as ten different entertainers sing, dance and otherwise captivate young audiences during Thursday Morning Kid�s Performances, June 7 through August 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Concert Pavilion. Featuring such performers as Mr. Knick-Knack, Kidsinger Jim, and Blue Sky Puppet Theater, parents and children alike will start their day off with a smile.

Spend a special afternoon experiencing uplifting gospel music at Jubilation Day on June 2 at the Concert Pavilion. This musical celebration, taking place from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., will include performances by local and regional choirs, choruses, quartets, dancers, and singers, with featured performer Jay Caldwell & the Gospel Ambassadors.

Thursday Night at the Movies brings family favorites right to your own backyard. Screenings include the PG-rated Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom on June 21 at Robertson Park, Puss in Boots on July 12 at Malcolm King Park, and Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World on August 2 at Kelley Park. All movies begin at dusk.

On the fourth Saturday of every month, May through October, you�ll find the lively Olde Towne Market, a bazaar-like atmosphere with crafts, foods, flea market items, handmade goods, and more. Royal Paulownia Tree at Bohrer Park Named Maryland State Champion

Royal Paulownia Tree at Bohrer Park
Named Maryland State Champion

Gaithersburg, MD � (May 18, 2012) A large Royal Paulownia tree located on the grounds of Gaithersburg�s Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm was recently named Maryland State Champion as the largest tree of its species in the state. The tree has been entered in to the Maryland Big Tree Register. Coordinated by the Maryland Forest Service, the register has recorded data on the largest trees of each species growing in the state since 1925.

The Royal Paulownia at Bohrer Park, which was measured on February 8, 2012, has a circumference of 16� 3�, a height of 62�, and an average crown width of 68�. In 2005 the same tree was recognized as the new Champion of its Species by the Montgomery County Forest Conservancy District Board.

Trees designated as State Champions are automatically considered for nomination into the National Register for Big Trees, a program of the American Forests conservation program.

Paulownia trees have been prized by the Chinese for centuries. The fast-growing tree, capable of growing 10 to15 feet in the first year, yields hardwood that is often used in making furniture, musical instruments, doors, moldings, window frames, poles, pulp, and paper. Paulownia can be commercially harvested in five to seven years and makes great veneer and plywood. The leaves of this versatile tree have even been used to make tea.

The announcement of the Maryland State Champion designation was made at the dedication of a new Memory Grove and Garden on May 16, 2012, a collaborative effort between the City of Gaithersburg and the Neighborhood Garden Club of Gaithersburg-Washington Grove. As part of an afforestation effort, the City, along with help from club members, high school students and residents of Asbury Methodist Village, recently planted new trees at the Memory Grove and in other locations at Bohrer Park. Long recognized as a steward of environmental sustainability, the City of Gaithersburg recently received designation as a Tree City USA from the National Arbor Day Foundation for the 23rd consecutive year.

Book Festival to Help Local Schools

Gaithersburg, MD (May 14, 2012) For the second year, the City of Gaithersburg is partnering with Reading Tree to encourage the donation of books both at the Gaithersburg Book Festival and at bins located throughout the City. All books will be donated to students and their families in Gaithersburg Title I schools.

Bring used books to the Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and drop them off at the Community Services Educational Enrichment Committee booth. You may also purchase a new book to donate while shopping at the on-site Politics and Prose book sales tent.

Meeting for Brighton East Community

Gaithersburg, MD (May 14, 2012). On Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. the Mayor and members of the City Council will participate in a Gaithersburg Council in the Communities meeting for residents of the Brighton East community. The meeting will be held at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 506 S. Frederick Avenue, next to Gaithersburg High School.

Council in the Communities meetings are designed to foster two-way communication and allow citizens to discuss issues and concerns specific to their neighborhoods. Conversely, City officials often use the meetings to gather feedback on specific capital improvement projects and to poll citizens on relevant topics impacting Gaithersburg. The meetings are held at various locations throughout the year.

Deadline Extended for �Citizen Canine� Photo Contest

Gaithersburg, MD (May 11, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg has extended the deadline for entries in the �Citizen Canine� Photo Contest. Residents now have until June 14 to submit images of their four-legged family members.

To promote visits to City parks and to celebrate the wonderful world of dogs, residents are encouraged to take photos of their leashed and licensed pooches in parks around the City, then enter them for a chance to be declared �Citizen Canine of the Year.�

From June 18 to July 6, qualified entries will be posted for voting on the City Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gaithersburgmd.gov. The photo with the most number of �Likes� will be named Gaithersburg�s Citizen Canine of the Year.

Chinese Brush Work, Glass and Drawings
on Display at Arts Barn Gallery

Gaithersburg, MD � (May 11, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg presents Chinese brush painting and calligraphy by Nellie Chao and Kit-Keung Kan, the glass works of Eileen Martin, and drawings by Vian Shamounki Borchert and her students at the Arts Barn Gallery May 18 through July 15, 2012. The gallery is located at 311 Kent Square Road in Gaithersburg, with viewing hours Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. An artists� opening reception will be held on Tuesday, May 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Nellie Chao was born in Shanghai, China and educated in Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States. Her pursuit of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy began in the mid-1990s. Chao enjoys the freedom of painting with the po mo technique of splashing or pouring watercolor and ink on shikishi gold board. She has won many prestigious awards, including the National Capital Orchid Society�s �Best Painting of the Show� and �First Place of Asian Brush Painting.� She has exhibited in solo and group exhibits and demonstrates Chinese brush painting and calligraphy in workshops, seminars, schools, and nonprofit organizations, in DC, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and other areas. Chao is a member of the Sumi-e Society of America, Inc. and Potomac Valley Watercolorists.

Kit-Keung Kan studied traditional Chinese painting under Leung Pak-Yu, Chow Yat Fung, and Kan Maytin, and studied calligraphy under Au Kin-Kung. He has held more than 30 solo exhibitions, including one at Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and participated in more than 80 group exhibitions in DC, New York, Louisville, Richmond, Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and other international cities. He used traditional techniques to study rural landscapes of Hong Kong in the 1960s, and went through abstraction through simplification in the 1980s. Recently his painting is specialized on white water and waterfalls. His treatment is realistic, but often borders on abstractionism. Kan�s work is collected by many private and corporate collectors and is also found in the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Copelouzos Family Art Museum, Athens, Greece, Chung Chi College, Morningside College, the University of Hong Kong, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Embassy in Moscow.

Eileen Martin is skilled in all areas of the glass art trade beyond free-standing glasswork. Her stained glass restoration and repair work puts her fine-tuned expertise to use on existing structures. HGTV featured her commission work in an episode of the popular home and garden television show Curb Appeal. Although the bulk of her work is commissioned stained glass, she also does repair and restoration work, sometimes even on-site. Martin's work spans cold, warm and hot glass forming techniques and includes commissioned stained glass for churches, residences and businesses, as well as dishware, interior panels, jewelry and sculptural art, all reflecting the range of materials and techniques available to a glass artist. After taking classes with Tony Glander, a glass artist currently in residence at the Arts Barn, she decided on a career change and opened her own studio/gallery in a barn in Olney.

Vian Shamounki Borchert is a professional artist and a graduate of The Corcoran College of Art and Design, Washington, DC and has a Master Web Design degree. She is an art educator and a teacher who helps students of all levels explore their inner creative voice. Borchert�s expressionistic and abstracted art illustrates a poetic mood and a thoughtful journey in the world of painting. Her work is acquired internationally and locally in places such as The National Gallery of Art in Amman, Jordan and The Jerusalem Fund Gallery in Washington, DC. Borchert has taken part in many group and solo shows at the Kentlands Mansion Gallery, The Yellow Barn Studio & Gallery, Strathmore Mansion, Women's Club of Chevy Chase, Cairo Amman Bank Art Gallery, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The International Trade Center, The French Cultural Center in Amman, Jordan, The BlackRock Center of the Arts, and others. She has many years of experience teaching art classes in acrylic, watercolor and drawing.

Administration Director Announced

Gaithersburg, MD � (May 9, 2012) Five finalists for the position of Director of Planning & Code Administration have been invited to Gaithersburg for an all-day interview session and a public meet and greet opportunity on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. More than 60 applicants from across the country submitted resumes, which were screened by a recruitment consultant and an internal committee. Video conference interviews were conducted with ten candidates, and from that pool the finalists were selected.

The finalists are:

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. the public is invited to meet the candidates at a reception to be held at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, located at 506 S. Frederick Avenue next to Gaithersburg High School. The candidates will make brief statements to the audience, and then will be available for individual questions. The public is encouraged to provide feedback using comment cards that will be provided.

Books in Mayor�s Reading Competition

Gaithersburg, MD � (May 9, 2012) � For a four-week period in March and April, Gaithersburg third graders in five different schools read 7,883 books as they competed for top prize in the Mayor�s 3rd Annual Book Club Reading Competition, held in conjunction with the Gaithersburg Book Festival.

Fields Road Elementary School won top honors, with 85 students reading 4,664 books. Within Fields Road, Ms. Antoinette Silvera�s class read the most books, 2,001 in all.

The students in Ms. Silvera�s class selected �Max�s Words� by Kate Banks as the book they will read and discuss later this semester when Mayor Sidney Katz visits with them for a pizza party. The book is about a boy who collects words and creates a wonderful story.

Mayor Katz will recognize the winning class at the Gaithersburg Book Festival at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2012, with each student receiving a gold-star membership card and a certificate. The presentation takes place on the Concert Pavilion stage.

The top individual reader in the City-wide contest was Logan Snow, who read an impressive 205 books. He is a student in Ms. Elyssa Ram�s class at Fields Road Elementary School. As part of his recognition, Logan will be invited to ride in the trolley with the Mayor and City Council during the 74th Annual Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade on September 3, 2012.

Participating students from the five area elementary schools that took part in the competition, including Fields Road, Summit Hall, Strawberry Knoll, Washington Grove, and Diamond Elementary Schools, are now members of the Mayor�s Book Club.

Street Reconstruction Affects Streets in Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg, MD (May 9, 2012) � The City of Gaithersburg Department of Public Works will be conducting street reconstruction on Firstfield Road (from the north side of the driveway at #19 to Quince Orchard Road) and on Quince Orchard Boulevard (from Diamond Drive to MD Rte. 124) starting the week of May 21, 2012. The work will consist of removal and replacement of existing curb and gutter, sidewalk, and pavement.

It is anticipated that the construction will last until approximately September 1, 2012, weather permitting. Gaithersburg, MD � (May 8, 2012) The Mayor and City Council have proclaimed May 19, 2012 as National Kids to Parks Day in the City of Gaithersburg, encouraging children, teens and families to visit parks throughout the community.

At the Mayor and City Council Meeting on Monday, May 7, 2012, Mayor Sidney Katz presented a proclamation to Shana Fajardo of the National Park Trust (NPT), a nonprofit organization striving to preserve and protect our nation�s parklands, and to reconnect youth with nature. During the presentation, the Mayor stated, �The continuing challenge ahead is to educate the younger society about the distinctive values and enjoyments of the national park system. The long term results provide a fresh generation with an awareness of the vast array of riches in our parks.�

When you visit a City park on Saturday, May 19, take your camera with you, and then submit photos of your adventures to the NPT for inclusion on their special map that will commemorate the day. Gaithersburg, MD � (May 8, 2012) At the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council meeting on Monday, May 7, 2012, Acting Homeless Advocate and Clinical Supervisor Lourdes Carazo and the Police Administration Team were presented with Employee and Team of the Quarter Awards for the first quarter of calendar year 2012.

Made up of peers from each department, an Employee Recognition Committee reviews nominations for individuals and teams on a quarterly basis. Guidelines provide for a maximum of two individual and two team awards in each quarter. Quarterly winners are entered into nomination for the annual Employee and Team of the Year Awards.

Lourdes Carazo, Acting Homeless Advocate and Clinical Supervisor in the Homeless Services Division of the Department of Community & Public Relations, was named the Employee of the Quarter for her exceptionally high level of work and for the positive outcomes she has provided. Despite transitional challenges during a period of staff reorganization, the Division has maintained a very high standard of service and program integrity, thanks in part to Lourdes� efforts. Since July of 2011, five residents have graduated from the Wells/Robertson House program into permanent supportive housing. To ensure the success of these clients, Lourdes has had to meet deadlines for applications, gather documents to confirm qualifications, and submit appeal letters and waivers for clients that may not otherwise have met housing criteria. She has spoken at meetings, workshops, and Teaming meetings to advocate for the challenged population served by Wells/Robertson House, and she has taken it upon herself to launch an aftercare program to assist graduates with the transition, ensuring their ongoing success.

The Police Administration Team, comprised of Administrative Assistants Laura Morales and Nancy Patino, was named the Team of the Quarter for its high level of productivity and quality of work, providing exceptional customer service, demonstrating and maintaining excellent working relationships with coworkers and customers, and willingly and cheerfully cooperating with and assisting others whenever needed or requested. The Gaithersburg Police Department requires its employees to maintain a high level of professionalism and tact to create an atmosphere that is relaxing and enjoyable in which to work. Both Laura and Nancy provide exceptional customer service and helpful information to internal and external customers and go out of their way to ensure all citizens, whether on the phone or in person, are given individual attention. In addition to performing their normal job duties, they provide clerical support to the officers on a daily basis.

Gospel music, the uniquely American art form that gave rise to jazz, blues, R&B, and rock and roll, will be celebrated in all of its glory as the City of Gaithersburg presents the 5th Annual Jubilation Day 2012 Gospel Concert, taking place during the kick-off weekend of the City�s Outdoor Summer Concert Series.

On Saturday, June 2 from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Concert Pavilion at City Hall will host performances by local and regional choirs, choruses, quartets, dancers, and singers. The celebration will also feature food and crafts for purchase.

This year�s featured performer is Jay Caldwell & the Gospel Ambassadors. The group has been together for over 40 years, continuing to give the world a sound that is unique to all who listen to them. They have recorded twelve albums, with such songs as �Take it Away,� �Grand Mama�s Hands,� �Leaving Jericho,� �Walking in Jerusalem,� �Victory,� and �Take off your Shoes.� The group has traveled to several cities and continues to spread the gospel through music wherever they go. Miss Nelson is Missing! at Arts Barn Theatre

Gaithersburg, MD � (May 4, 2012) In partnership with Kensington Arts Theatre 2nd Stage, the Arts Barn presents Miss Nelson is Missing!, a family production with music, lyrics and book by Joan Cushing. The show runs May 12 through 27, 2012, with performances on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is $18, $16 for City residents, and $9 for students through grade 12.

What happens when Miss Nelson, the gentle, long suffering teacher of the worst behaved class in the entire school, goes missing? The students of Room 207 are in for a big surprise when Viola Swamp, a scary substitute teacher who assigns homework from hell and wields her ruler like a sword, shows up to take Miss Nelson�s place. No more spitballs and paper airplanes for these uncontrollable children who set out to find their beloved Miss Nelson. Will they ever get her back? Based on the children�s book by Henry Allard, this musical teaches lessons of appreciation and respect.

The New York Times says, �A gifted playwright and composer, Ms. Cushing has created a musical that will charm anyone who has ever sat in front of a schoolteacher�s desk � or, for that matter, behind it.�

You�ll find it next to the Skate Park, Miniature Golf Course and Activity Center at 512 South Frederick Avenue, on the grounds of Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm.

The Water Park recently underwent major renovations and improvements just in time for the 2012 season. New features include the addition of two water slides, a variety of brand new play features, the creation of a sixth lap lane, the replacement of the main pool gutter system, and new pool plaster. A complete redesign of the tot pool includes a custom in-water play structure with open and closed flume slides that pays homage to the state of Maryland with Black-Eyed Susan and Blue Heron play features.

As always, the Water Park�s main pool offers shallow water play and recreational swimming. The main attraction is still the double-flume slide, which sends swimmers down from a 38 foot tower. In addition to the new and improved tot pool, complete with fountains and sprays to entertain the little ones, the Water Park also has a carpeted sun deck, grassy areas with picnic tables, and a snack bar plaza operated by Boardwalk Fries. The Water Park operates on a pre-season schedule while school is in session. The full summer season begins June 9, with the pool opening daily at 11 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The highly acclaimed Rick Whitehead Trio, led by master jazz guitarist Rick Whitehead, will play simultaneously at Kentlands Mansion. This includes newspaper, mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, and commingled materials, as well as brush, branches, grass clippings, leaves and other yard trimmings, picked up by the City�s recycling contractor.

Register Now for Gaithersburg Summer Sports Clinics

Gaithersburg, MD � (May 2, 2012) Registration is now open for Gaithersburg Sports Summer Clinics, featuring gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball for ages 5 to 18. Clinics are a great way to learn the fundamentals, hone existing skills, or prepare for the next sports season.

Gymnastics clinics will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for two weeks starting June 19. Participants will learn skills on the bars and balance beam and in vaulting and tumbling. Skills are taught in a safe, progressive order to build strength, flexibility and confidence. Clinics are open to new and continuing students ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 14.

Tennis clinics will meet throughout the summer starting the week of June 18 for youth ages 7 to 11. A variety of sessions, consisting of eight two-hour classes, will be offered. Instruction will be given on basic ground strokes, footwork, movement to the ball, court positioning, net play, strategy, scorekeeping, and general knowledge of the game.

A variety of volleyball clinics will be held throughout the summer for different grade groups. One-week clinics will be held for grades 6 to 8 starting July 9 and grades 4 to 6 starting August 6. A four-day clinic will be held for grades 9 to 12 starting July 30. Instruction includes the fundamentals of passing, setting, and spiking, along with offensive and defensive strategies. Players will experience "game like" situations during drills and scrimmages. Please use the grade your child will be entering in the fall.

Recipients of this year�s Historic Preservation Awards, which acknowledge preservation efforts by individuals and organizations in the City, will be recognized at the May 21, 2012, Mayor and City Council Meeting.

Accordion Bookmaking (Ages 5-8 and 9-11) � Heidi Bishop, a local artist specializing in print making and children�s book arts, will teach children to make their own Accordion Book. Children will be challenged to think creatively and explore new ways to tell their story through artwork. The 11:30 a.m. workshop is for children ages 5 to 8 and the 2:30 p.m. workshop is for children ages 9 to 11. Maximum class size for each class: 10. Sign up at the Kid�s Workshop Tent.
Creative Kids (Ages 5-11) � Join Lenore Blank Kelner for a mini-workshop that explores children's stories through drama. The group will create and act out their own original stories based on specially selected children�s books. Maximum class size: 12. Sign-up at the Creative Kids Tent.
Adventure Theatre�s �No Strings! A Pinocchio Adaptation!� (Ages 6-14) � AT�s Summer Camp staff will teach participants how to perform a musical number in only 40 minutes! The workshop will include a short excerpt reading of Carlo Collodi's original children's novel, �The Adventures of Pinocchio,� followed by an open dance call and musical rehearsal. Group Story: Kids Writing Collaboratively (Ages 8-12) � Join Kathy Crutcher, the D.C. director and an instructor for Writopia Lab, as she takes children through a collaborative writing exercise in which they create a group story full of original characters and dramatic conflict. Gaithersburg, MD � (May 1, 2012) Loyalty and patriotism will be on full display as the City of Gaithersburg joins the nation in honoring all who have given their lives in military service at a very special Memorial Day Observance on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Christman Park. The public is invited to join the Mayor, members of the City Council, City staff, and honored guests in a tribute to Gaithersburg�s sons and daughters who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Joining the observance will be special guest speaker Brigadier General (Ret.) Gerald E. Galloway. General Galloway is a Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering at the University of Maryland, where his teaching and research focus is on water resources and natural disaster policy and management. During a 38-year career in the military following his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy, he served in various command and staff assignments in Germany, Southeast Asia, and the United States. General Galloway currently serves as a consultant to several federal, state, and non-governmental agencies on water resources policy development and flood risk management.

The patriotic ceremony will include words and music to commemorate the occasion, as well as a solemn wreath-laying ceremony. At the event guests will also be invited to fill out a card for our Book of Tribute, honoring friends and family who serve.

Christman Park, named for Lt. William J. Christman III, a Gaithersburg resident who was killed in Vietnam, is located at 304 West Deer Park Road in Gaithersburg. Gaithersburg, MD (April 27, 2012) Gaithersburg Youth Club�s Center Stage is proud to present The Trials of Robin Hood, a comedy by Will Averill produced by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc. Performances will take place on Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m., Friday, May 4 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, May 5 at 11 a.m. at the Gaithersburg Arts Barn, 311 Kent Square Road. Note that show times are subject to change. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 12. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Upon returning from the Crusades, King Richard is forced to try and figure out what happened in his kingdom during his absence and if Robin Hood is a hero, a lovelorn sap, or just plain mean. This hilarious comedy, told from the perspectives of Robin himself, Maid Marian, and the Sheriff of Nottingham, combines three different endings and leaves it up to the audience to decide which one is true.

Now in its eighth year, Center Stage is a dramatic arts program for students ages 11 to 15 who are members of the Gaithersburg Youth Club. The participants are involved in all aspects of the theatrical process, including acting, set design and construction, stage management, make-up, advertising and promotion.

Look for Special Deals throughout Season

Gaithersburg, MD (April 26, 2012) Gaithersburg invites you to �Come Play a Round� on its beautifully landscaped miniature golf course, located at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm, 510 South Frederick Avenue next to Gaithersburg High School. The course is open weekends May 5 through June 15, daily June 16 through August 24, and weekends only again August 25 through October 7.

The park opens at 11 a.m., and closing hours vary from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. depending on the day of the week and the season. Please note that the park will close at 7 p.m. on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Play must start one hour prior to posted closing time.

Rates per game are just $5 for residents and $6 for nonresidents. Unlimited play is $2 more. Discounts apply for Senior Citizens.

On Mother�s Day, May 13, treat your mom to a fun round of golf to celebrate her special day. Moms play free with a paid customer. Several other promotional days are planned this year, too. Gaithersburg, Md. � April 26, 2012 � If you thought the Gaithersburg Book Festival (GBF) featured only solo presentations by best-selling and award-winning authors, you would be missing out on some entertaining and thought-provoking panel discussions and interactive conversations between authors and the leading critics and journalists who cover them.

On May 19, 2012, the GBF has on its schedule five special programs designed to stimulate conversation about writing and the written word:

Stewart O�Nan in Conversation with Ron Charles � Returning for the second year is Ron Charles, well-known critic and fiction editor for The Washington Post. Anthology of Women Writers Panel Presentation � Richard Peabody, author and founding editor of Gargoyle magazine, presents his new book, �Amazing Graces: Yet Another Collection of Fiction by Washington Women,� featuring stories and novel excerpts by 45 Washington-area female writers. This is the fifth volume in the series, edited by Peabody, which features original work from 206 local authors. The panel includes brief readings and Q&A with five of the book�s contributors.
Separating Fact from Fiction � This panel, moderated by Herta Feely, is based on Feely�s recent book, �Confessions: Fact or Fiction?� � a collection of 22 short stories and memoirs written by award-winning authors from around the country. The panel engages a number of local authors who will read from their stories and participate in a group discussion about writing fiction and non-fiction. The panel also involves the audience in trying to figure out if select stories are true or �made up.�

Gaithersburg, MD (April 24, 2012) The Gaithersburg Community Chorus, directed by Hugh Harvey, III, is proud to present three nights of Mozart�s Requiem at this year�s spring concerts. The performances will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 9000 Warfield Rd. and Tuesday, May 22 at the Rosborough Theater at Asbury Methodist Village. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Requiem Mass in D minor, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791, is known as one of the most mysterious pieces of music ever created, mostly because of the myths and controversies surrounding it. Requiem was Mozart�s last piece of work and was left unfinished at his death. It was completed by Franz Xaver S�ssmayr, but there is debate on what portions not in Mozart�s handwriting were based on his ideas.

Admission to the concert is free. Donations are gratefully accepted. The Community Chorus is sponsored by the City of Gaithersburg Cultural Arts Advisory Committee, and is funded in part by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.

Emphasizes Community Connections

Gaithersburg, MD (April 20, 2012). Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz and members of the City Council hosted the annual State of the City address on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Asbury Methodist Village. More than 200 guests attended the reception and presentation, including civic partners who serve on City boards, commissions and committees, elected officials, community leaders, members of the media, and others whose involvement is invaluable to the Gaithersburg community.

In his annual address, Mayor Katz outlined accomplishments from the past year and spoke of challenges and opportunities facing Gaithersburg in the months and years to come. His full remarks are available online at www.gaithersburgmd.gov.

The evening also included the screening of a new video, Gaithersburg: A Community Connected. Created by the City�s Cable TV Division, the production brings to life the City�s recent citizen survey, including testimonials from dozens of residents, business and community leaders on such topics as economic development, sustainability, public safety, community engagement, and much more.

The Mayor�s address and the video will be available for viewing on Gaithersburg�s Cable TV channel, GTV, as of April 25. Gaithersburg, MD (April 17, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg invites all canine residents and their owners to compete in the first ever �Citizen Canine� Photo Contest. Gaithersburg is home to more than 500 acres of parkland. To promote visits to City parks and to celebrate the wonderful world of dogs, residents are encouraged to take photos of their leashed and licensed pooches in parks around the City, then enter them for a chance to be declared �Citizen Canine of the Year.�

All qualified photo entries will be posted on the City Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gaithersburgmd.gov, where voting will take place. The photo with the most number of �Likes� will be named Gaithersburg�s Citizen Canine of the Year and will receive a $75 PetSmart gift card, with second and third place winners receiving $50 and $25 PetSmart gift cards.

Gaithersburg, MD � (April 16, 2012) Great shopping opportunities are just around the corner at the City of Gaithersburg�s Spring Baby Bazaar and the Spring Outdoor Flea Market, both held at the Montgomery County Agricultural Center. The Baby Bazaar will take place on Saturday, May 12, 2012, and the Outdoor Flea Market will take place on Saturday, June 16, 2012, both from 8 a.m. to Noon. The Agricultural Center is located at 16 Chestnut Street in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Admission is free to the public. Come discover great deals on gently-used or new baby and children�s merchandise at the Baby Bazaar, and clothes, household items, toys, kitchenware, and more at the Outdoor Flea Market.

Space is still open for vendors interested in selling gently-used or new items. The resident cost is $20 for those selling used merchandise and $30 for those selling new merchandise. The nonresident cost is $25 for those selling used merchandise and $35 for those selling new merchandise.

Memory Grove and Garden to be Dedicated May 16

Gaithersburg, MD � (April 16, 2012) In partnership with the City of Gaithersburg, the Neighborhood Garden Club of Gaithersburg-Washington Grove will dedicate a Memory Grove and Garden at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm on Wednesday, May 16 at 10 a.m. The Neighborhood Garden Club envisioned a tranquil setting surrounded by a grove of trees as a way to honor club members who have passed. Located in front of Hospice Caring, Inc., the garden will serve as a public spot of rest and relaxation, as well as a memorial for club members who have helped beautify this community for years.

Members of the club will plant and tend to a perennial garden, which will include hydrangeas, peonies, daffodils, and other flowering plants. The peonies that will be planted in the garden are descendent from the original �World Famous Schwartz Peony Garden� that graced what is now the parking lot, post office and gas station between City Hall and the railroad tracks. Established in 1913, the Schwartz garden at one time boasted more than 40,000 plants in 410 varieties. Plants from the original garden have been preserved and now grow at City Hall and at Seneca Creek State Park. The peonies at the Memory Grove and Garden will come from those at Seneca Creek.

A brick patio and four benches will complete the idyllic spot. The Memory Grove and Garden will be available for public use, and will be an ideal setting for family and special occasion photographs. Memorial bricks on the patio are purchased by the club for its members. The bricks will be engraved with the club member�s name and years of service.

As part of an afforestation effort, the City of Gaithersburg will bring the Garden Club�s vision of a Memory Grove to life by planting fifteen indigenous oak, sycamore and hickory trees around the garden. Those trees, as well as several others at Bohrer Park, will be planted on April 21 by volunteers from Asbury Methodist Village and members of the City�s High School Student Union as part of the Beloved Community program, an outreach and collaboration effort between Asbury Methodist Village, the City of Gaithersburg, and other community organizations. April 14 � 21 is Green Week in the City of Gaithersburg.

Started in 1931, the Neighborhood Garden Club of Gaithersburg-Washington Grove has a mission of stimulating knowledge and love for gardening, increasing awareness of the natural world, and encouraging civic beautification.

Gaithersburg, MD (April 13, 2012). The National Arbor Day Foundation has named Gaithersburg, Maryland a Tree City USA for the twenty third consecutive year. Sponsored by the Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Tree City Award recognizes Gaithersburg�s commitment to the environment and its aggressive approach to preserving and enhancing its urban forest. The City met four national standards to qualify: Having a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, maintaining a comprehensive community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2 per capita, and celebrating Arbor Day with an observance.

�By sustaining and increasing our City�s urban tree canopy, we reap the benefits of increased filtration of air and water pollution, the trapping of carbon and a lowering of ambient temperatures,� said Gaithersburg Environmental Planner Dyan Backe. �Among their numerous benefits, trees are instrumental in reducing the heat island effect."

During Green Week, April 14 � 21, Gaithersburg will celebrate Arbor Day at Brown Station Elementary School. At an assembly on Thursday, April 19, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will present Gaithersburg with its Tree City USA Award. Mayor Sidney Katz and other elected officials will join students in a tree planting ceremony at the school.

Gaithersburg, MD � (April 13, 2012) The Art in Public Places Committee of the City of Gaithersburg is inviting artists to submit their qualifications for a public art project at Residences at Hidden Creek, which is currently under construction. When complete, the Residences will contain 300 luxury residential units on 6.5 acres located at the corner of Girard Street and Goshen Road in Gaithersburg. The artwork will be located in a slightly terraced, pocket park partially visible from Girard Street.

A selection committee will review applicant qualifications. Based on the quality of the aesthetic expression, expertise and style of each applicant�s body of work, the committee will select finalists to design site-specific artwork.

This developer-funded project has an all-inclusive budget of $25,000 to cover the artist�s commission, engineering, fabrication, transportation, delivery, and installation of the artwork.

Gaithersburg, MD (April 12, 2012). The City of Gaithersburg announces the availability of its most recent Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit (MPDU) program at Hidden Creek Apartment Homes. The property, located off Goshen Road at Girard Street, offers 45 one- and two-bedroom units at rents of $1,008 and $1,142, respectively.

First priority goes to households displaced from West Deer Park Apartments, Broadstone Apartments, and three apartment communities on East Diamond Avenue vacated between 2006 and 2008. Additional priority households include Public Safety Workers, K-12 Montgomery County public and private school employees, and full-time employees of the City of Gaithersburg.

This is the third property to offer MPDUs since the adoption of Gaithersburg�s Affordable Housing Ordinance in late 2006. Once fully occupied, the City will have more than 100 moderately priced units in its rental housing inventory.

Applications Available for 2013 Art Gallery Exhibits

Gaithersburg, MD (April 9, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg invites artists and art organizations to submit an application to exhibit at one of three art galleries in the City, including the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion, and the Activity Center at Bohrer Park.

Applications are now being accepted for the upcoming 2013 exhibition season. Artists� work will be selected by a jury committee and both group and individual shows will be selected.

among Highlights at Paws in the Park

Nose Work, a rapidly growing training sport that keeps dogs engaged and mentally active, is a new feature this year at Paws in the Park. Beth Mullen, a professional trainer with the Montgomery County Humane Society, and volunteers from Your Dog�s Friend will demonstrate how to work with dogs in this enjoyable activity.

�Nose Work is an enrichment activity that allows dogs to work with their innate ability to use their nose,� Mullen says. Shy dogs quickly learn confidence while high energy dogs find effective ways to channel that energy.

Mid-Atlantic Disc Dogs will again demonstrate their athletic prowess at catching specially designed aerodynamic discs. In addition to the 1-mile walk for all registered participants, the fun-filled afternoon also includes agility, pet games, demos, rescue groups, a �flealess� market with over 50 pet-friendly vendors, food, music and more.

Paws in the Park, a signature event of the Montgomery County Humane Society held in partnership with the City of Gaithersburg, will take place on Sunday, April 29, from noon to 4 p.m. at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm, 506 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg, MD, next to Gaithersburg High School.

One of the largest dog walks in the DC area, the event raises funds to help homeless and abandoned animals throughout Montgomery County. To register and raise funds online, visit http://www.firstgiving.com/mchsmd.

Registered walkers are encouraged to invite friends to support them through online donations. Supporters can sign on individually or by forming a team that includes family and friends, favorite breed groups, rescue organizations, companies, teams to honor or remember a pet � even the family cat. Entrance fees are $20 for an individual or $35 for a family.

Paws in the Park supports the Montgomery County Humane Society�s efforts to protect and care for unwanted, abandoned and abused animals � everything from dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs, to reptiles, birds and others. Contributions make a difference in the animals� lives and assist the people who love them. Programs include life-saving medical care, off-site adoption events, animal rescue, pet retention and pet bereavement workshops, foster homes, humane education, behavior advice, affordable spay/neuter, and a network of approximately 200 partnering rescue groups.

Art and Music Fusion Returns to Kentlands Mansion

Gaithersburg, MD � (April 6, 2012) �Art After Dark,� a cutting-edge art show featuring progressive visual art fused with up-and-coming music, returns to Kentlands Mansion on Friday, April 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is $10 per person, payable at the door. A cash bar and complimentary snacks will be available. This show features abstract acrylics by visual artist Jaree Donnelly and three full sets from indie rock band E.M. Spencer.

Gaithersburg artist and Kentlands/Lakelands resident Jaree Donnelly has had a lifelong creative calling. Her passion for the arts began at an early age, enjoying two and three-dimensional art and music. Donnelly enjoys the exploration of the creative process and has studied studio art, art history, photography, and graphic and jewelry design. She works in a variety of media, but has recently returned to her roots in painting, working in acrylic on canvas. Her large, abstract paintings have an ethereal quality, focused on the interplay of color and texture. For Art After Dark, Donnelly will feature several of her paintings and may also share a few of her experimental silver jewelry pieces.

Hailing from Towson, Maryland, E.M. Spencer is an indie rock band whose origins can be traced back to 2002. Existing in several previous incarnations, the band has played together for several years and features Allen V. McCallum, Jr. on bass and vocals, Kurt Shriner on guitar and vocals, Greg Silver on keyboard and vocals, and Jerry Fields on drums. E.M. Spencer has recorded three albums, The Suburban Baltimore Songbook, Who is Spencer? and Breathe, with the latter being released at this Art After Dark event. Influenced by Fleetwood Mac, Ben Folds, Metallica, and others, the band looks forward to creating and playing more music together in the future.

Gaithersburg, MD (April 6, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg presents two Farmers� Markets, featuring locally grown produce throughout the growing season. The variety of fruits and vegetables changes weekly as different crops reach maturity. In addition to produce, both markets feature a variety of meats, honey, jams and jellies, fresh herbs, potted plants, cut flowers, and more.

The Main Street Farmers� Market is open Saturdays, May 5 through November 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You�ll find it in the Main Street Pavilion at 301 Main Street, one block off of Kentlands Boulevard in the Kentlands. A variety of local artists and craftspeople with unique handcrafted items will join the farmers at this location each Saturday, and baked goods including bread, pastries, and cookies will also be available.

The Fulks Corner Farmers� Market is open Thursdays, June 7 through October 25, from 2 to 6 p.m. You�ll find it at the corner of Route 355 and Fulks Corner Avenue in Olde Towne. Proposed FY2013 Gaithersburg Budget Available for Review

Gaithersburg, MD (April 2, 2012). Gaithersburg City Manager Angel Jones has proposed a Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 budget of $51.7 million, which is 7.8% higher than the FY 2012 budget. While property tax revenue has remained relatively flat, the City is anticipating increased revenue from licensing and permitting fees and service charges as development projects move forward.

Highlights include a 3.6% cost of living adjustment for full time employees, funding post-retirement benefits at recommended levels, increased staffing to address public safety, environmental services, public works, human services and administrative support, a reserve fund for potential increases in fuel costs, and the continued funding of economic development initiatives.

�Conservative and thoughtful preparation has allowed us to craft a fiscal plan that continues us on a road to restoration,� says City Manager Jones in her official letter introducing the budget. �While we are not yet back to pre-recession budget levels, I am happy to present a budget that increases staff in key areas, maintains the market comparability and competitiveness of our personnel, restores funds for maintenance of infrastructure and equipment necessary for continued operations, and allows us to support the most vulnerable in our community.�

The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed FY 2013 budget on Monday, April 30, 2012, with a budget work session scheduled for Tuesday, May 1. Public comment, limited to 3 minutes per person, is welcome at these meetings, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 31 South Summit Avenue. Pre-registration is not required. The meetings will be televised live. Check the City�s website for schedule updates. Gaithersburg Aquatic Center Closure Update

Gaithersburg, MD � (April 2, 2012) Following a complete assessment by a structural engineering firm, it has been determined that the Gaithersburg Aquatic Center, located at 2 Teachers Way, will remain closed for the next six to eight months to address structural issues. Surface inspections have indicated that corrective action is required. Below-the-surface inspections done during the construction may reveal the need for additional renovations.

�We are working closely with MCPS to affect the necessary repairs as expeditiously as possible, but our first priority is safety,� says City Manager Angel Jones. �It is paramount that we provide quality facilities for residents and visitors to enjoy leisure activities, while also ensuring a hazard-free workplace for our City employees.�

Built in 1975, the Gaithersburg Aquatic Center is owned by Montgomery County Public Schools and operated jointly with the City of Gaithersburg. Gaithersburg�s Facilities Maintenance staff discovered cracks in perimeter wall support columns during an inspection on January 25. The facility was immediately closed for the safety of staff and patrons.

The spring and summer sessions of swim lessons are cancelled at the Aquatic Center, while summer swim lessons will be available at the Water Park. Water exercise participants are encouraged to participate in City-sponsored classes at the Quince Orchard Swim and Tennis Club. Registration is currently being accepted for both summer swim lessons and water exercise classes. Arrangements have been made for Gaithersburg Aquatic Center Members to lap swim at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center at a cost $5 per swim until the Water Park opens for the season. Lifeguard training is being held at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park in conjunction with rented pool space at Lakeforest Sport and Health Club.

Gaithersburg, MD (March 30, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg is currently seeking designation as a Sustainable Maryland Certified community, recognizing the City�s efforts in conservation, cost-effective resource protection and community revitalization. To further this initiative and better allocate resources, the City is soliciting feedback from those who live, visit, work or conduct business in Gaithersburg.

Throughout the month of April, a two-part electronic survey will be available on the City�s website below. Interested participants are asked to complete both parts, one of which is brief and one that asks for additional information.

The mission of the Sustainable Maryland Certified community program is to enhance livability for all Marylanders by helping municipalities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, measure their progress, and gain recognition for their accomplishments.

City Celebrates Arab American Heritage Month

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 29, 2012) In celebration of Arab American Heritage Month, the City of Gaithersburg�s Multicultural Affairs Committee presents �Caring and Advocacy: Arab Americans Making a Difference.� The event takes place on Monday, April 23 in the City Hall Gallery, 31 S. Summit Avenue. A reception will be held from 6 to 7:15 p.m., followed by a proclamation delivered in the Council Chambers during the Mayor and City Council meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Please join us for an evening of traditional Arab cuisine and a commemoration of Arab Americans who have made contributions in the areas of caring and advocacy. The event will feature a presentation by Minaret of Freedom Institute President and Director Dr. Imad-ad-Dean Ahmed, an internationally known interdisciplinary scientist and author. Dr. Ahmed is also a senior lecturer at the University of Maryland, as well as an adjunct professor at Wesley Theological Seminary.

The annual proclamation in celebration of Arab American Heritage will declare April 2012 as Arab American Heritage Month in the City of Gaithersburg and will recognize the Arab American community and its achievements and contributions to the fabric of our society.

Employee, Team of the Year Award Winners

Gaithersburg, MD (March 29, 2012) At the City of Gaithersburg�s annual employee recognition breakfast on March 29, 2012, Mayor Sidney Katz, Council Vice President Ryan Spiegel, Cathy Drzyzgula, Henry Marraffa, and Mike Sesma, and City Manager Angel Jones presented the 2011 City of Gaithersburg Carl Webb Employee of the Year Award to David Ludington and the Team of the Year Award to the Water Park Facility Management Team. They were selected from a group of quarterly winners reviewed by the City�s Employee Recognition Committee, made up of peers from each department.

The 2011 Carl Webb Employee of the Year award, named for a former Public Works employee who exemplified the ideals of hard work, integrity, honesty, and enthusiasm, was presented to Dave Ludington, Senior Recreation Program Supervisor with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture. Ludington was recognized for two initiatives that stepped outside the traditional realm of City youth activities. He introduced a fall Cross Country track program for youth in grades 1 through 6 and a Track and Field offering in the spring. The Cross Country program had 60 participants, and the Track and Field program saw over 135 registrants. Both programs offer the opportunity for young people to participate in a sport where size and height are not a factor, and they support First Lady Michelle Obama�s �Let�s Move Cities and Towns� initiative to foster a healthier lifestyle and fitness for our youth. Ludington�s vision and energy were directly responsible for the success of both initiatives.

The Water Park Facility Management Team, comprised of Community Facility Directors Adam Goldstein and Jennifer Mogus, was recognized for ongoing efforts to provide the citizens of Gaithersburg and guests of the Water Park with an environment that is welcoming, customer-oriented and safe. Goldstein and Mogus oversee a rigorous preopening training program for seasonal staff, which continues throughout the summer, using in-house workshops to reinforce safety and customer service practices. Ensuring the safety of all patrons is a primary responsibility for staff. Under Goldstein and Mogus� capable leadership, the safety record of the facility remains impeccable. The staff is well versed on all safety procedures at the Water Park, and they have earned a reputation for responding to emergencies in a timely, efficient and calm manner. Goldstein and Mogus were singled out for this award for their direct contributions to making Gaithersburg a great place to live, learn, work and play.

Maya Walker Named 2012 Gaithersburg Junior Mayor

Maya Walker Named 2012 Gaithersburg Junior Mayor

Gaithersburg, MD (March 28, 2012). Out of a field of 93 entries, Maya Walker of Gaithersburg Elementary School has been selected as Gaithersburg�s Junior Mayor for 2012. Her first appearance will be at the annual State of the City Address on April 19, 2012 and she will be officially introduced to the public at the Mayor and City Council meeting at Gaithersburg City Hall on May 21, 2012.

Earlier this year, 4th grade students throughout the City were invited to submit essays describing what they would do if they were mayor. The contest is sponsored statewide by the Maryland Municipal League (MML), the Maryland Mayors� Association, the Injured Workers� Insurance Fund and Local Government Insurance Trust. The theme this year was �Meeting the Challenge.�

Regardless of whether or not MML selects its statewide winner from a Gaithersburg school, the 93 entries were reviewed locally by members of the City�s Educational Enrichment Committee. Five finalists were identified and were invited to City Hall for a video interview, out of which Ms. Walker was selected as Gaithersburg�s Junior Mayor.

When asked during her interview why it is important for people to identify challenges and propose solutions, Ms. Walker responded, �It�s important to identify challenges because they can get out of hand and escalate to a bigger problem.� In her essay, Ms. Walker stated that �If I were mayor, I would have to face many challenges that endanger the Gaithersburg community. Insuring the safety of Gaithersburg�s citizens would be the main thing me and my council would be working at.�

The Junior Mayor will be invited to participate with Mayor Sidney Katz and members of the City Council in several public events throughout the year. Green Youth Service Project
Wednesday, April 18
Green volunteer activities go hand-in-hand with the environmentally-friendly characteristics of the Youth Center at Robertson Park and the Youth Center in Olde Towne. The Gaithersburg Youth Club (GYC) is a program designed specifically for middle school students to provide safe, well-supervised and fun activities for participants during their off-school hours. GYC students will earn student service learning hours by participating in community clean-up efforts.

Arbor Day Celebration
Thursday, April 19
Children at a local elementary school will participate in an Arbor Day program on Thursday, April 19, emphasizing the importance of trees in our community. During the assembly, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will present the City with its 23rd annual Tree City Award and the Mayor will donate a tree to the school.

Bohrer Park Tree Planting
Saturday, April 21
Residents of Asbury Methodist Village and members of the City�s High School Student Union will join together to plant more than 35 trees at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm as part of the Beloved Community project, an outreach and collaboration effort between Asbury, the City of Gaithersburg, and other community organizations. The tree plantings are part of an afforestation effort.

Comes to Kentlands Mansion

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 22, 2012) - The City of Gaithersburg and the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association (GFAA) present the 26th Annual Juried Art Exhibition, an exciting collection of unique multimedia works, at Kentlands Mansion from March 23 to May 20, 2012. The public is invited to an artists� reception and awards ceremony on Tuesday, March 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The juror, Yolanda Frederikse, is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Washington Society of Landscape Painters.

The GFAA provides a forum for members to collaborate on activities that expand on their individual artistic backgrounds. The group provides educational programs, promotional opportunities, and outreach to local audiences and the broader artistic community, and holds multiple exhibits during the year throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Founded in 1970, GFAA has grown to more than 75 members, many of whom regularly exhibit their work, actively teach, or contribute to Montgomery County arts events.

�Baby� Arrives at Arts Barn Theatre

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 21, 2012) In partnership with Rockville Musical Theatre, the Arts Barn presents �Baby,� a pop/rock musical comedy by Sybille Pearson with music by David Shire and lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. The show runs April 13 through 29, 2012, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Admission is $18, $16 for City residents. This recreation guide contains a complete listing of recreation classes, sports programs, youth and senior services, cultural arts, aquatics, and recreational facilities. Spring class registration for City of Gaithersburg residents is now open. Nonresidents may register beginning March 21.

With programs for preschoolers, youth, teens, and adults, you�ll find an array of fitness, dance and special interest offerings. This spring edition of the Leisure Times introduces a variety of new classes and programs. Get in shape with STEP ROCKS! and Dynamic Energy Boost Workout fitness classes. Explore your creative side with Beginning Beading and Introduction to Wire Work jewelry making workshops. Hone your computer skills with Microsoft Word for Career Development, Microsoft Excel to Manage Your Finances, and HTML to Develop a Family Website. Finalists Named for 2012 Gaithersburg Book Festival High School Short Story Contest

Finalists Selected for 2012 Gaithersburg Book
Festival High School Student Short Story Contest

Winners to be Announced at Festival on May 19

Gaithersburg, Md. � March 19, 2012 � Judges have selected 13 finalists from a pool of 141 entries for the Gaithersburg Book Festival�s second annual high school student short story contest.

The first-, second-, and third-place winners will be announced at the festival on May 19, after which they will read their winning stories. Winners will receive $100, $50, and $25 gift certificates, respectively.

The winning stories will be selected by award-winning mystery author Brad Parks (�The Girl Next Door: A Mystery,� �Eyes of the Innocent� and �Faces of the Gone�) and novelist Jennifer Miller (�The Year of the Gadfly�), both of whom are among the more than 100 featured authors who will be at the Gaithersburg Book Festival. Parks also provided the three opening lines from which students had to choose when writing their stories.

�To see our entry pool grow by more than 20 percent is exciting,� said Jud Ashman, festival chair and City of Gaithersburg councilmember. �Even better, our Round One judges, two of whom are repeats from last year�s contest, said this year�s judging was even more challenging.�

This year�s list of finalists include two students who were recognized last year: Alice Yanhong Lu, last year�s third place winner, and Andrew Qian, who earned an honorable mention.

This year, contest entrants hailed from 14 jurisdictions throughout D.C., Maryland and Virginia, up from 10 last year. Jurisdictions included the Maryland counties of Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George�s; and the Virginia counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Gloucester, Loudoun and Prince William.

The prizes for the contest are provided by the Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus.

The finalist stories can be read on the Gaithersburg Book Festival web site belwo and viewers will be able to give a �thumbs up� to those stories they like best. Festival organizers hope to use the thumb votes to name a �Fan Favorite� story at the festival.

The Gaithersburg Book Festival is an annual all-day celebration of books, writers, and literary excellence. Now in its third year, the Festival has become one of the premier literary events in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Gaithersburg Receives 34th Consecutive
Annual Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting

Gaithersburg, MD (March 15, 2012). For the 34th consecutive year the City of Gaithersburg has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada for its most recent comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by Gaithersburg�s government and its management.

The Certificate is presented to Harold Belton, Director of Finance and Administration, Tina H. Smith, Comptroller and Ling Yan Angela Woo, Chief Accountant.

Gaithersburg�s CAFR for the year ending June 30, 2011 was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive �spirit of full disclosure� to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago, IL, and Washington, D.C.

Gaithersburg, MD (March 14, 2012) Hop on over to Kentlands Mansion�s newest event, the Bunny Tea. Little ones, along with a parent or guardian, are invited to bring their favorite stuffed bunny to an afternoon of tea, sandwiches, fruits, scones, and desserts in the elegant surroundings of this beautiful, century-old estate. Paintings, Sculpture on Display at Arts Barn

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 14, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg presents the paintings of Izya Shlosberg, Michelle Izquierdo, Howard Cohen and his students, and the sculptures of Genna Gurvich at the Arts Barn Gallery, March 16 through May 13, 2012. The gallery is located at 311 Kent Square Road in Gaithersburg. Viewing hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. An artists� opening reception will be held on Tuesday, March 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Izya Shlosberg, a graduate of the Moscow University of Art and the Belarus Institute of Technology in Minsk, is a prolific, avant-garde artist who combines technical training in industrial design and independent study of form and color. His independent vision gives him a unique perspective on the concept of art. Schlosberg�s trademark three-dimensional works combine the traditional elements of form and color with multimedia materials to add depth and texture to conventional two-dimensional oil paintings. His techniques lend an expression of profound depth and spirit to each painting. Just like some people understand the world in terms of philosophy, physics and mathematics, Schlosberg uses intuition, reflection and the subconscious. Every painting is a breakthrough emotionally, spiritually and intellectually and represents his innovative and unique concept of the physical and spiritual, which resonate with the surrealism of Giorgio de Chirico and Rene Magritte and the romanticism of Marc Chagall, Pieter Breugel and Gustav Klimt.

Maryland artist Michelle Izquierdo, of Hispanic descent, is naturally drawn to bright colors and liveliness and enjoys using bursts of color and unusual texture to create her art. She began her journey of self-expression through art during her time at the University of Maryland, where she studied Studio Art and received a Bachelor�s of Art degree. Izquierdo was one of ten artists representing the United States at the recent Parallax Art Fair in London, her first international show. �I have never been so inspired by so many people at once! Since it was an international show we all spoke different languages, but we all understood the language of art,� she says. Izquierdo is looking forward to what new inspiration the show at the Arts Barn will bring her.

Genna Gurvich�s sculptures emerged from a sense of muddle and confusion brought on by the connection of his Jewish, Ukrainian and Russian cultural roots, a degree in design and a serious fight for spiritual survival. He naturally appeals to simple forms, natural progression and the use of materials over time to combat the multitudinous aesthetic expressions found in the art world. Guvich�s works aim to expand and simplify the artistic space that he chisels for the viewer. He finds inspiration in Kazimir Malevich�s statement that �nature is hidden inside infinity and universality�the miracle of nature is that it can be included inside a small tiny granule, but be so huge that nobody can grasp it�you must see into the granule to discover the integrity of the universe.�

As a young man, Howard Cohen found National Geographic photographs fascinating as subjects and would draw from them. He eventually started drawing cartoons for local papers, honing his illustrative style. After spending four years in the U.S. Marines, with time in the South Pacific, Cohen returned to the U.S. in 1946 and enrolled at the New England School of Art and Design, which is now part of Suffolk University. He studied fine and commercial arts but primarily enjoyed the social environment that the school cultivated. Cohen started teaching at the Arts Barn after his first Arts Barn student, whom the Barn�s Blanche Keller Studio is named after, looked through his studio window and asked him if he could teach her how to paint. �It takes time to learn how to paint and be comfortable painting anything,� says Cohen. "I introduce my students to composition, mixing colors and perspective." Although his growing body of work consists mostly of landscapes, over the past year Cohen has been painting portraits. He paints copies of works by the masters that have preceded him and learns a great deal from the process. Some of his influences include American painters John Singer Sargent, George Bellows, William Merritt Chase and Cecilia Beaux. Cohen and his students� artwork will be on exhibit at the Arts Barn Invitational Gallery.

Supplies for End of School Year

Gaithersburg, MD (March 13, 2012). The City of Gaithersburg Educational Enrichment Committee, in conjunction with the Division of Community Services, announces the kick-off a school supply collection drive. Several years ago the Committee conducted a survey of educators and found that supplies for teachers and students are much needed during the mid- and latter parts of the school year. As part of the GREAT program (Gaithersburg Recognizing Educational Achievement Today), the committee is collecting school supplies for distribution to Gaithersburg area schools in the spring.

Items specifically identified by local educators include:

Notebooks, notebook dividers and folders
Blue and green construction paper and notebook paper
Pencil pouches
Regular and colored pencils and small sharpeners
Red and blue pens
Crayons, twistable crayons and markers
Dry erase markers and erasers
Glue bottles and glue sticks
Scissors (especially for lefties)
Rulers
Clorox/ Lysol wipes
Hand soap/ hand sanitizer

Gaithersburg Skate Park Opens for 2012 Season

Hours Extended During Spring Break

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 12, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg Skate Park opens for the 2012 season at noon on Friday, March 30, 2012.

Regular hours will be weekdays from 3 p.m. to sunset and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to sunset. Special extended hours will be in place during Spring Break, March 30 through April 9, when the park will open daily at noon.

The Skate Park is located behind the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 510 South Frederick Avenue, and welcomes skateboarders and in-line skaters during all sessions. BMX bikes are also permitted every day except Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Safety equipment regulations require helmets, while elbow and knee pads are optional. However, all safety equipment is highly recommended and in-line skaters must wear wrist guards. Protective gear is available for rent.

The 12,300 square foot resurfaced park contains a variety of obstacles including an A-frame ramp and rail, mini-half pipe, 7-6' escalator, stairs, pyramid wedge, fun boxes, wall ride, and several quarters and banks of varying heights. The park�s amenities also include an outdoor stereo system, vending area and picnic tables. Take advantage of money-saving memberships, lessons, birthday party rentals, skate camps, and other special events.

Daily admission is $3 for residents and $5 for nonresidents. Money-saving Season Memberships are $35 for residents and $50 for nonresidents. Gaithersburg to Host Spring Golf Tournament

Proceeds Benefit Youth Coaches Education Program

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 9, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg hosts its annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament on Friday, May 4, 2012, at the Red Gate Golf Course in Rockville, Maryland. This 4-player scramble format tournament is limited to the first 30 foursomes.

Proceeds from the Gaithersburg Spring Swing Golf Tournament benefit the Youth Coaches Education Program, providing training and support for the dozens of coaches who work with City of Gaithersburg youth throughout the year.

The $85 per player fee includes green fees, cart, door prizes, souvenirs, and a post tournament luncheon. Advance payment and registration is required by Friday, April 27, 2012. Payment can be made with check or Visa/MasterCard. Sponsorships are also being accepted for the tournament.

Music on the Move Concerts

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 2, 2012) The City of Gaithersburg invites you to enjoy beautiful music in a unique format at its Music on the Move concerts. Experience a blend of Spanish and French music at �The Near Exotic, Spanish and French� concert on Saturday, March 24, then come back for �Jazz in June� on Friday, June 1. With concerts occurring simultaneously in the Arts Barn and at Kentlands Mansion, patrons attend the first half of the evening with a concert in one venue, then switch at intermission to enjoy a second concert in the other. Intermission features a variety of delicious, complimentary desserts, with champagne, wine, beer and soft drinks available for purchase.

�The Near Exotic, Spanish and French� concert features Douglas Rogers on guitar at the Arts Barn and Alex Peh on piano at Kentlands Mansion. Rogers� performance features works by Spanish composers, some of who lived in France. Peh�s piano performance features works by French composers influenced by Spanish guitar music. Ticket holders are invited to attend a free pre-concert lecture at the Arts Barn at 7 p.m., where Rogers and Peh will discuss the program, the featured composers, and how their music and location influenced each other. Seating is limited to the first 99 patrons.

�Jazz in June� returns with two local jazz greats, Bruce Swaim and Rick Whitehead, performing jazz standards and original compositions. The Bruce Swaim Quartet, playing at the Arts Barn, is recognized as one of Washington, DC�s premier jazz quartets and is one of the area�s most sought after performing jazz groups. The BSQ received the 2010 Washington Area Music Association award for Jazz Group of the Year as well as the award for Jazz Recording of the Year for �Winter�s Waltz.� The highly acclaimed Rick Whitehead Trio, led by master jazz guitarist Rick Whitehead, will play simultaneously at Kentlands Mansion. Performing together since 1994, the Rick Whitehead Trio has earned several awards, including the Washington Area Music Association award for best Contemporary Album in 1998. The trio can be found performing at Blues Alley, Bohemian Caverns, the Smithsonian�s Jazz Club, the Kennedy Center, and many other venues in the area.

Art and Music Fusion Heats Up
Kentlands Mansion this Spring

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 1, 2012) Looking for something different to do on Friday nights in the City of Gaithersburg? Kentlands Mansion introduces �Art After Dark,� a new cutting-edge art show featuring progressive visual art fused with up-and-coming music. Art After Dark takes place Friday nights, March 16, April 20 and May 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is $10 per person, payable at the door. A cash bar and complimentary snacks will be available. Visual artists Michelle Izquierdo and Anthony Palliparambil Jr. and singer Kyla Simone will be featured at the March 16 debut event.

Maryland artist Michelle Izquierdo began her journey of self-expression through art during her time at the University of Maryland, where she studied Studio Art and received a Bachelor�s of Art degree. Her artwork is influenced by experimentation with various mediums and the use of different textures and colors. Izquierdo enjoys the process of discovering how her art evolves and comes to life as she uses different methods and techniques. Each piece of work has journeyed through a very dynamic creative process and the outcome is an expression of her discoveries. Fresh from an international trip to London to exhibit her work at the Parallax Art Fair, Izquierdo is excited to continue showcasing her work in her own backyard.

Bowie resident Anthony Palliparambil, Jr. is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where he studied studio art and art history. He is currently working at the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts. It's been a goal of his to understand and appreciate the facets of modern aesthetics while developing his style through painting and photography. Palliparambil has a particular fondness for color that is most evident in his painted works, which tend towards the minimal. His interest in photography has led to similar minimalistic examinations of light, form, and simplistic composition - a recurring theme in his work. Art After Dark will feature Palliparambil�s first exploration in combining the mediums of painting and photography while still respecting his minimalist background.

Singer Kyla Simone aims to provide a fresh perspective and sound by fusing her life-based lyrics and her passion for world sounds and eclectic arrangements. Currently, Simone is working on her debut EP project �On Fire,� which is an expression of her struggle to keep her relationship with Christ fresh, passionate and consistent. �I feel like everyone can relate to the feeling of needing more, searching for something deeper, unconditional, and reliable,� says Simone. She hopes that this album will be a vehicle of healing and spiritual growth. Simone has two singles available on iTunes and Amazon entitled �Clarity� and �Ministry. In addition to singing and songwriting, Simone is a visual artist, entrepreneur, mentor, and radio host.

�Train Days� Return to Community Museum

Model Trains on Display March 24 & April 21

Gaithersburg, MD � (March 1, 2012) The Gaithersburg Community Museum celebrates Gaithersburg�s long and storied history with the railroad during �Train Days at the Museum.� On March 24 and April 21, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., train builders from the BANTRAK T Trak Division will set up small scale model trains. Visitors are invited to view the model train displays, tour a caboose filled with local train history, visit the 1918 steam locomotive on display in the adjacent History Park, and shop for train-related items in the Museum gift shop. With any luck visitors can also enjoy the sights and sounds of the actual CSX, Amtrak and MARC trains that rumble past the Museum on a regular basis.

Located in the restored 1884 B&O Railroad Station complex near the intersection of Summit and Diamond Avenues in Olde Towne, the Gaithersburg Community Museum features educational exhibits and programs designed to spark interest and imagination about our City's history. Interactive displays include a bank, school room and general mercantile store. The Museum is located in the restored B&O Railroad complex, and consists of the historic Freight House, History Park and the rolling stock. A Budd Car recently joined the complex, and will provide nearly 800 square feet of new space for future museum programs, audio visual presentations and rental opportunities.

While the model trains will only be on display on March 24 and April 21, the Gaithersburg Community Museum is open to patrons every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with additional hours by appointment.
