I was looking through an old folder yesterday and came across this graphic from the New York Times of a few years ago which looked at the literacy debate of are you really reading when you are online. How we read when online

This graphic was really interesting to me as it communicated a process from information absorption to information dissemination. Interestingly the graphic specifically mentions blogs as a way of communicating information learned.

“I don’t want us to see us descend into a nation of bloggers,” says Jobs. “I think we need editorial oversight now more than ever. Anything we can do to help newspapers find new ways of expression that will help them get paid, I am all for.”

I think that as the next generation of journalists emerge they will form themselves into loose networks with senior people who advise and mentor the upcoming group so that they have the “editorial” oversight that jobs mentions, but without the “big business” overtones. Hyper-local news….(maybe I’ll save that for next time)

Many university students are using new technology to catch up on missed lectures.

FIRST-YEAR tertiary students are spending less time on campus and more time online, as podcasts of lectures become increasingly common.

Three out of four students use podcasts of lectures and a third believe online lecture materials can be a replacement for attending classes, according to the nationwide survey of 2422 first-year students by the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne.

Green Technology Strategies

Tom Worthington has released a new book “Green Technology Strategies” which is about how to reduce carbon emissions and achieve other environmental benefits by using computers and telecommunications technology. It is designed to be used within an online course for professionals, using mentored and collaborative learning techniques. Therefore it is of particular use to educators, especially Geography, Earth and Environmental Science etc.

Did I forget to say that there is a free online version available!

New media and an open internet

I’m a great fan of the TWiT network and their podcasts, they help me get through my daily commute and stay informed. This video is a great insight into how democratising the internet truely is and the impact you can have from wherever you are.

As educators, the future is in our hands. Take note that the camera’s used to ‘film’ this documentary cost about AU$220 each. This is not a big budget production for the documentary, but the quality and message are exemplry. A lesson for all educators that we can also be content creators, developing excellent resources.
