Stranger Visions: DNA Collected from Found Objects Used to Create 3D Portraits

Facing the Genetic Future

Sitting in a therapist’s office, New York City artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg discovered a hair

lodged in a crack in the glass covering a painting on the wall. “I stared at it for an hour,”

she says. “I couldn’t stop wondering who it belonged to, and what I could find out about

that person.”

After reading a story in Science about the new field of forensic DNA phenotyping

(18 February 2011, p. 838), Dewey-Hagborg decided to turn her fascination into an art

project. She collected 11 hairs left around the city by strangers and learned how to test their

DNA at a genetics lab. Now, she’s printing three dimensional masks, or approximations, of those

people’s faces, which will be on display—along with her own—in a January exhibition called Stranger

Visions. The masks reflect eye color, geographical roots, sex, and other traits, but not exact facial

features because forensic phenotyping can’t fill in all the details. But it might one day, and with ever

cheaper sequencing, an era of “genetic surveillance” is looming, says Dewey-Hagborg. “As a society, we

need to have a discussion about that.”

We are very glad to announce our Christmas pop up shop:

on the 1st of December we will be opening the door's to Conquers Wardrobe

Conquer’s Wardrobe at Unit 4, Sydenham Station Approach, London SE26 5au

In collaboration with SEE3 we are opening the doors to our very first shop space, For the month of December we will be displaying Art pieces, Having a photo exhibition, Selling Conquers Collections and having a few choice pieces from other art and craft labels that we fill our wardrobe's with. We look forward to being a destination for local and not so local residents with late night openings every Friday night for December, interactive art, Mulled wine, and music is a distinct possibility!

On December 1st we open the doors with our "adults at play" exhibition as part of our I'm Five collection:

Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up? with a photo booth at this years Secret Garden Party during our festival tour inside the Secret Emporium we captured young and old at play and encouraged a level of imagination and fun not usually associated with growing up!

We recently created some christmas decorations for the Secret Emporium secret christmas market @ Village underground, and thought we might share it with the rest of the conquer people out there in the world. When printed you can either make christmas baubles as we have in our conquer home, or you can play Drop Dead the dice game (instructions included.) Some assembly required but they look fantastic made up.

The Museum of Everything is giving the public a rare glimpse into the world of a British Pop Art Pioneer.

'I began my collecting when I started in the Junior Art Department at Gravesend School of Art when I was 14. There was a junkyard next to the station and on my first visit I bought a set of leather-bound Shakespeare, a papier maché tray and a painting of the Queen Mary that happened to be a kind of outsider art, and it all started from there.'

in Sheffield is one of the interesting spots you can find our stuff.
Last month we took a trip up north and took over the shop for a night.

Along with bringing up an abundance of gear
not normally stocked in Kuji,
we hung a selection of our original illustrations.

On top of all that we dropped a few tshirts in trees around the local area.

Sheffield; we came, we CONQUERED.

South East Londons seminal Hip Hop munch bunch Queen's Enlglish recently returned from Spain where they had been filming the video for their newest single 'New Balance'.

Did you catch that? Female lead, Jessica Hill, in our Smile Skull Viscose Tank!

To celebrate the videos launch they brought a little of the latin spirit back with them! The Launch Party, which featured Salsa dancing lessons, had the band decked out in matching ensembles which could only be described as Matador chic.

This mad musical ensemble had the Favela Chic on Old Street packed with friends and fans alike.
