See and Be Safe – Vehicle Cameras

Camera systems are an ideal way to stay safe while manoeuvring vehicles. Although many applications, such as construction and quarry vehicles, require cameras to be used in order that safety standards are met; it makes good sense for cameras to be introduced to other vehicles in general usage. Aside from the personal safety aspect they can save money in the long run, how much does one prang or accident cost? Hassle with insurance companies, increases in premiums… the list goes on.

In our long experience of the automotive and leisure industries camera systems are seen with increasing frequency. Many of the top spec cars, lorries and motorhomes include camera systems as a factory fitted extra, the latter are at least pre-wired for an ‘easy’ aftermarket fit.

Aftermarket Options

In the leisure market many people opt for having cameras fitted by the dealer at time of purchase, which on the up side can save money, on the downside product quality can be an issue, it is perhaps not the best option to just go for a reversing camera believing them all to be the same and without any option to upgrade the original.

Car cameras are readily available and relatively straightforward to install aftermarket however, modern cars are manufactured with less and less space in the dashboard so integrating the monitor can be very tricky; Often the only way is mounting the screen on top of the dashboard. The real difficulties come when trying to integrate an aftermarket camera into an original equipment (OEM) screen; Unless the integrated screen is equipped with a composite video input it is very difficult without an intimate knowledge of manufacturer specific Automotive AV electronics.

The technology of aftermarket cruise control

Over the years the technology of the aftermarket cruise control has grown significantly, which is due to the advances of the vehicles they need to fit on to. 10 years ago the only aftermarket cruise control systems available were mechanical, and so required inventive solutions dubbed ‘Creative Engineering’ consisting of various brackets and levers in order to fit them.

These days many of the aftermarket cruise control solutions are drive by wire, meaning that they plug into the throttle pedal and the cruise computer mimics the action of your foot at an electrical level. This technology has opened the doors in terms of types of vehicle that are able to have retrofit cruise control installed. Many of the fittings are far simpler, requiring less creative engineering and essentially turning aftermarket cruise control into more of a self-fit or DIY solution.

This product development has inevitably lead to a cost increase however, although the prices are higher, what is gained in the supply has been offset by the improved simplicity in the fitting and the broader range of vehicles which can have aftermarket cruise control fitted. Also, since there are fewer moving parts the hardware is simpler in fault diagnosis, making it more accessible product for the end user.

Most modern cars (year 2000 onwards ish) have, what is termed, drive-by-wire throttle systems. Before the fully electronic cruise control system was developed, the only option was a mechanical system, which works by pulling the pedal down using a bracket. This requires far more room around the throttle pedal in order that the bracket can fit with the required travel to give the cruise control full speed range. Due to this, the new technology has enabled many more small and medium sized cars to be fitted with aftermarket cruise control. Whereas many of the large van and 4x4 ranges can be and still are fitted with mechanical cruise control systems.

Large vehicle satellite navigation

An end to the curse of green lanes!
Being directed down minor roads by the sat nav is a growing problem for motorhomers and drivers of any large vehicle. However, this could be a thing of the past with the launch of a new Truck and Large Vehicle Navigation system.

Conrad Anderson, the Birmingham based supplier and installer of vehicle electronics are now stocking the new portable navigation system for trucks and larger vehicles from VDO Dayton. There will also be an installed system due to be launched in Autumn 2008.

The unit can be customised with the vehicle dimensions and programmed to avoid height, width and weight restrictions and is supplied with street level mapping for Europe. The units are available with a 4.3in or 5.6in screen and include a built-in freeview TV tuner.

Highlights
Route calculation for large vehicles needs to consider comprehensive additional criteria – such as travel time monitoring, adjustable vehicle settings and truck-specific route planning including road restrictions and Points-of-Interest. The good news: One single solution meets all these demands – the new PN6000TSN.

VDO Dayton is the first portable to offer specific navigation for trucks and large vehicles with full Europe coverage and digital TV.

The portable offers a route tailored to the vehicles attributes, enabling the vehicle to avoid any restrictions en route, such as low bridges and narrow roads.

The system is easy to use, simply enter the vehicle's attributes eg type, height, width, length, weight and weight per axle, hazardous goods etc and the destination will be calculated avoiding any restrictions for the vehicle. The stylish unit is available in a widescreen 5.6" display (PN6000TSN) or a pocket friendly 4.3" display (PN4000TSN).

NEW LEAS Stabiliser

Conrad Anderson, the Birmingham based supplier and installer of vehicle electronics, have been announced as the sole importer of the LEAS Stabiliser, the only universal electronic caravan/trailer anti-snaking system on the market.

The German manufacturer, BL Trading, has enjoyed a number of years of success in the German caravan and trailer market and is keen to continue that success into the UK market with the announcement of this new partnership.
