Over the last week and a half, I received questions about how to do the hair style seen in last week’s outfit post, so I made a tutorial video of how to create this sideswept updo . Of course, I have locs, but with a few modifications, this is a style that can be done on any hair type.

HEY there lovelies!! Wohoo for the weekend!!! LOL, are you excited about the weekend’s arrival? Aside from a rough start Monday morning, my week has been great, but I am still looking forward to some weekend fun (though I have no major plans yet, lol). What are you doing this weekend? I do hope to get in a visit to the thrift store, to find some vintage shorts for my birthday fun, but whenever I go thrifting for something in particular, I never find it, so *fingers-crossed*. Every week I share pictures (via Instagram, or my regular iPhone camera) of things that made me smile.

These are some things that made me smile this week:

The random decision to hang vintage sequins blouses as wall art. (I changed the hangers to black velvet ones)

Attending my little cousin’s graduation and spending time with family. I’m so proud of all she has overcome to graduate!!

Stopping for a drink by myself at a bar I’d never been to. It’s good to step out of my comfort zone of going out with friends.

Denim and Flowers

I must admit, I’m one of those people that feel that denim can be worn in just about any occasion (excluding funerals, weddings, and formal occasions, of course). So throwing a denim shirt over a floral dress was a no brainer for me when I got dressed for church Sunday morning! I was visiting a church I’d never been to before, so I did wonder if it was appropriate for that church, but I figured if it wasn’t, oh well, lol. I believe church is about getting God’s Word, and not what you wear, so I tend to wear what feels good to me .

I’ve had this dress for about a year, and it just dawned on me that I’ve never worn it as such. I’ve worn it as a skirt with a shirt on top, and as a top, with the bottom tucked in a different skirt. The more I think about it, I don’t think I’ll ever wear it as a dress, lol. Do you wear your clothes as something they aren’t meant to be? I’m sure I’m not the only one . What about denim, do you feel like it should only be worn in casual situations?

Lovelies, have you ever seen something in the store, or while browsing the internet, and instantly knew you HAD to have it? That’s what happened when I saw the Demestiks collection on the Addicted 2 Etsy blog (I can’t seem to find the actual post, but you should still be following Cyn)! I didn’t make a purchase immediately, as I was on a self-enforced shopping ban, but I knew I was going back for this top, and when I did, it happened to be on sale. Even better right?!

I’m so obsessed with the bold African prints and the amazing silhouettes in Demestiks designer Reuben Reuel’s pieces, I want every one, from the old and new collections. This mini skirt is next on my list! Hopefully I’ll be ordering it with some birthday money soon .

Happy Friday darlings!! This week has been pretty stressful and emotional for me, in all honesty, so I am looking forward to the weekend and starting over next week. How was your week? One of my little cousin’s graduates this weekend, so I am looking forward to embarrassing her with my loudness at her graduation, this weekend, lol. I love that in spite of what I may be going through,or how many tears may fall from eyes, God looks down on me and cares enough to give me a reason (several, actually) to smile!! If for nothing else, I am grateful for the ability to smile. :-) Every week I share pictures (via Instagram, or my regular iPhone camera) of things that made me smile.

Your Body Is Fabulous- Shea

The YBIF series was started as a result of a book I started writing many years ago, “Your Body Is Fabulous: Dress Like It,” because I feel style and fashion is nothing if you don’t love the body you’re dressing. So, every Thursday I feature a lovely lady, bloggers as well as other gorgeous ladies I know or meet, who tell us what makes their bodies fabulous! The purpose is to empower women to to accept and love their bodies’ as they are by showing women with various body types, skin colors, hair textures, and more. This week I share with you, the awesome Shea of Curves and Confidence!

What makes your body fabulous?

My body is fabulous because it’s mine and mine alone. My body is fabulous because I have come to accept everything about it. My body is fabulous because after several years of “hiding” my curves I now embrace them and show them off every chance I get.

What is your favorite thing about how you look? And why?

I love my hips and shapely thighs. For the longest time I would shy away from anything that would show off my hips or play them up in any way. It wasn’t until I started my blog did I really feel like I had fully accepted my body and fell in love with who I really was.

What are your favorite things to wear to flatter your body or just help you feel good?

Pencil skirts, tailored pants, dresses…my list is long! Lol. I prefer skirts or dresses to pants any day, there is just something about a beautiful dress that will keep me smiling all day.

When it comes to finding clothes, what are some issues you come across? And how do you solve them?

I have wide hips so I usually have problems with pants gapping at the waist and dresses that fit my hips but don’t fit my bust area. In the past I would get frustrated when I loved a piece of clothing and it didn’t fit properly. Now instead of feeling discourage when something doesn’t fit me perfectly, I take it to a tailor or seamstress and have it altered to perfection. I even have a sewing machine that I use to make simple adjustments from time to time.

What role do you think the media plays in body acceptance?

I feel like the media plays a major role in labeling everyone instead of there being acceptance and appreciation for the difference amongst us. Anything different or outside of the “group think” mentality is questioned and the media does nothing but play up on those difference for their benefit.

What are your thoughts on female body acceptance and appreciation?

You only have one body it’s yours, love it, take care of it, and appreciate it.

I just <3 Shea!! I love her emphasis on finding a tailor or seamstress, and her point on the media creating labels. In an ideal world there wouldn’t be a skinny, or curvy, or plus-size. We’d all just be.

When Duty Calls

When I’m not on my graduate school/entrepreneur/blogger grind, I am a parent (with my mom) to my 11 year old niece and 13 year old nephew. So, Monday after school, I slipped on a couple of prints, and my favorite flats for a wee bit of shopping!! I really wanted to lay in my bed, but my niece graduates from elementary school today, which meant my parental duties called for some dress shopping .

Hello there lovelies!! While my weekend was a lovely time of reflection and time with loved ones, I was most excited that the weekend marked the beginning of June! My birthday is this month, and I am really excited about my birthday this time around. People who know me in non-internet life, know that I don’t usually care to make a big deal about my birthday, but after some of the things i experienced in my 27th year, I am looking to celebrate turning 28! Of course my coming birthday means, I’ve been doing some window shopping for outfits and stuff I wouldn’t mind getting as a birthday treat . I decided to share them with you guys (in two parts) in case, you’d like to do a bit of shopping too. Of course I had to start with shoes (my name is Rocquelle, and I’m a shoe junkie)!!

TGIF to you darlings!!! I have to admit, I have been off with my days all week, being ahead or behind by a day, since the holiday Monday, lol. So, I am glad to know it is Friday and a lovely weekend is ahead, full of whatever life brings my way . I start my graduate internship on Monday, so I am excited and nervous about what is waiting for me once the weekend is over. Nonetheless, I am grateful to be taking this final step in completing my Master’s degree. Every week I share pictures (via Instagram, or my regular iPhone camera) of things that made me smile.

Sunshine Lover

I know there are many people who love dreary rainy days or days full of snow, but I LOVE days full of warm sunshine!! I don’t know if it’s because I’m a Summer baby (my birthday is next month), but there is nothing better than feeling the sunbeams on my skin. It’s an automatic smile inducer for me . One of my best friends calls me Sunshine (so does my big cousin/sister), and when I showed up at her parent’s house for her father’s birthday dinner, she said “Sunshine!! You really are sunshine in those yellow jeans!” LOL

If you’ve been reading this blog log enough, you know I love color, but I feel like the warm weather brings out the SUPER color lover in me, lol. So, these yellow jeans and orange floral sandals will be getting lots of wear this Summer!
