<p>(That&#8217;s where you trade your skills directly for other<br /> products and services, rather than getting paid cash.<br /> As you&#8217;ll see, it can be highly lucrative and lots of fun.)</p>
<p>One of the first website projects I did &#8212; back when I was<br /> only charging $500 for a website &#8212; was a barter deal.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the sneaky story:</p>
<p>An old work colleague had just bought a brand new<br /> Yamaha YZ125. (If you&#8217;re not into bikes, just know that&#8217;s<br /> a crazy dirt bike like the pro motocross riders use.)</p>
<p>But he had a problem&#8230;</p>
<p>Right after he bought the bike, they released a new model!</p>
<p>And his wife wouldn&#8217;t let him buy the new bike because<br /> he&#8217;d just spent a small fortune on the first one.</p>
<p>But the good news is he also wanted a website for his new<br /> side business, so we worked out a little deal&#8230;</p>
<p>He would buy the new bike, give me the &#8220;old&#8221; one, and I<br /> would build him a website.</p>
<p>(He figured his wife wouldn&#8217;t notice he had a new bike as<br /> long as he only had one bike.)</p>
<p>So I built him one of my $500 websites, and he gave me<br /> his almost brand new $7,000 bike.</p>
<p>(You can imagine how excited I was at landing that deal.<br /> I still grin thinking about it.)</p>
<p>Now, I should mention&#8230;</p>
<p>I couldn&#8217;t ride &#8212; still can&#8217;t &#8212; and had never ridden anything<br /> bigger than a Pee Wee 50. And the bike almost killed me.</p>
<p>But boy did I have fun. And I learned an important lesson&#8230;</p>
<p>The skills you have can open doors you never knew existed.<br /> And barter lets you &#8220;trade up&#8221; &#8212; getting more in hard goods<br /> than you ever would in hard cash.</p>
<p>Since then barter has been one of my core joint venture<br /> strategies &#8212; trading my skills for everything from dirt bikes<br /> to luxury furniture to equity in my clients business.</p>
<p>(Not to mention countless cases of beer!)</p>

<blockquote><p>Now that some of the internet marketing gurus are getting in on the local business consulting market (and promoting it to their massive lists) do you think it will become saturated? If so, how long do we have until the easy money dries up?</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s my take on the situation&#8230;</p>
<p><span id="more-694"></span></p>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">Why Saturation Doesn&#8217;t Exist</h3>
<p>Frankly, I don&#8217;t believe in saturation.</p>
<p>At least not in an intangible, results-based market such as ours.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re not selling fridges &#8212; where once you&#8217;ve &#8220;got&#8221; one you&#8217;re sorted.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re selling results. So until everyone is perfectly happy with the results they&#8217;re getting from their marketing, we&#8217;re going to have all the work we want.</p>
<p>And when you realize increased competition in the consulting space increases the results of <em>some</em> of the market&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; which naturally decreases the results of others&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; which increases their need to improve results&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; which leads to an increased demand for consultants&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; you see that more competition is a good thing!</p>
<p>Besides, with 30+ million small businesses in the US, UK and Aus it&#8217;ll be a LONG time before they are all serviced, let alone satisfied.</p>
<p>(And that&#8217;s not counting the millions of medium/large businesses who also make great clients.)</p>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">Why The Gurus Don&#8217;t Matter</h3>
<p>I&#8217;ll keep this short and sweet:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">1. What they&#8217;re promoting now isn&#8217;t what they were promoting 6 months ago and it won&#8217;t be what they&#8217;re promoting 6 months from now. (I&#8217;ve been teaching my course for over 2 years and will still be teaching it in another 2 years.)</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">2. 5 of the 6 guys I&#8217;ve seen pimping local business aren&#8217;t doing it themselves, they&#8217;re just jumping on the bandwagon looking for a quick buck, so they don&#8217;t really know what they&#8217;re talking about. (I&#8217;ve been doing consulting for 11 years and only started teaching after 8 years experience.)</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">3. 98% of the people who blindly follow the gurus never take action (because there&#8217;s always something new being shoved down their throats!) so they aren&#8217;t your competition anyway.</p>
<ol> </ol>
<p>The fact is there will always be room in this market for ethical people who honestly want to help small businesses.</p>
<p>Competition is a good thing and only makes the good guys stand out even more <img src='http://www.consultingtycoon.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Now it&#8217;s been 5 weeks since the event, the dust has settled and the &#8220;Monday morning glow&#8221; has worn off, I wanted to write a quick review and share my experience.</p>
<p><span id="more-657"></span></p>
<p>First let&#8217;s take a look at&#8230;<br />
<h3 style=text-align:center;>What Fast Web Formula Was <u>NOT</u></h3>
<ul>
<li>Not your typical multi-speaker 90-minute slam-fest.</li>
<li>Not a &#8220;rah rah&#8221; feel good event that you forget by Monday.</li>
<li>Not outdated strategies from speakers who only <em>talk</em> the walk.</li>
</ul>
<p>Frankly, I don&#8217;t go to many events these days &#8212; too much <em>talk</em>, too much hype, and too little real <u>actionable</u> content.</p>
<p>But James Schramko has been quietly developing a cult following with his high-quality Internet marketing training events (Underground Profit System, Business Internet Formula, and Fast Web Formula) over the past few years&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; and we&#8217;ve become good friends in the process&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230; so when he asked me to come to Fast Web Formula and share my offline business consulting strategies I <em>jumped</em> at the opportunity.</p>
<p>(That&#8217;s James and I on the couch speaking to the 220+ strong crowd.)</p>
<p>I was lucky enough to meet and chat with many of the attendees, and not only was the feedback on the content consistently positive, but everyone was simply having a really good time. </p>
<p><em>Never heard the phrase &#8220;mind blowing&#8221; so many times in one weekend.</em> </p>
<p>By all accounts it was a value-packed event &#8212; with <u>zero</u> refunds &#8212; and most people I spoke to said they&#8217;d be back for FWF2.  </p>
<p>(About half of the attendees had been to one of James&#8217; previous events.)</p>
<h3 style=text-align:center;>Why Was Fast Web Formula Different?</h3>
<p><strong>Real Training From Real Experts (Not Professional Speakers)</strong></p>
<p>The expert lineup read like a &#8220;who?&#8221; of Internet marketing:</p>
<ul>
<li>Peter Parks</li>
<li>Dean Hunt</li>
<li>Kyle Tully</li>
<li>Kerry Finch</li>
<li>Steve O</li>
</ul>
<p>None of us are professional speakers, 3 of us (including myself) had never spoken in public before, and only 1 (Dean) had any kind of name recognition.</p>
<p>Rather than trotting out all the &#8220;big guns&#8221; James gathered his inner circle &#8212; the people he works with on a daily basis &#8212; to share exactly what&#8217;s working for them.</p>
<p>Because of this the event had a really friendly atmosphere (not an ego in sight) and all the speakers made themselves available for questions throughout the entire weekend.</p>
<p><strong>Synergistic Training That Works Together</strong></p>
<p>One of the things I&#8217;ve always hated about seminars is every speaker tries to pull you in a different direction.</p>
<p>One guy is telling you eBay is the path to easy riches, another swears affiliate marketing is where it&#8217;s at, someone else is saying CPA is the wave of the future&#8230; and none of the strategies work together!</p>
<p>The great thing about Fast Web Formula is it really was an A-B-C of how to start an Internet business. All the training works together and enhances everything you learn.</p>
<p>For example..</p>
<ul>
<li>Steve O taught keyword/market research.</li>
<li>Kerry showed how to create content and get free traffic from articles.</li>
<li>Dean revealed secrets for getting attention and creating buzz.</li>
<li>Peter let loose on getting tons of free &#8220;web 2.0&#8243; traffic</li>
<li>I showed how to leverage it by working with local businesses.</li>
</ul>
<p>And James tied it all together showing how he created a multi-million dollar Internet marketing business in just a few short years using these exact strategies.</p>
<p><strong>Conversational Learning Environment</strong></p>
<p>The most common comment I heard over the weekend?</p>
<p><em>&#8220;I love the couch&#8221;.</em></p>
<p>Rather than having speakers pacing the stage, talking <u>at</u> the audience, we had a very casual setup with a couch and 2, 3, 4, even all 5 of us on stage at once.</p>
<p>Not only did this bring the speakers physically closer to the audience and encourage more audience interaction, but the dynamic of speakers chatting on the couch allowed each session to develop organically&#8230; with ideas flowing freely back-and-forth between speakers&#8230; and gave plenty of time for people to take notes. </p>
<p><strong>50/50 Men and Women!</strong></p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve been to <em>any</em> event in the Internet marketing industry you know this is unheard of.</p>
<p><em>The hyped-up tone of most events usually puts the ratio at something like 80% men and 20% women.</em></p>
<p>But Fast Web Formula was an almost exact 50/50 split. I&#8217;ve got to say it&#8217;s AWESOME to see more women getting involved in Internet marketing and in the rapidly expanding offline business consulting market. </p>
<p><strong>Educational &#8220;Hot Seats&#8221; Each Day</strong></p>
<p>Continuing with the &#8220;education not just entertainment&#8221; theme of the event, at the end of each day we had audience hot seats.</p>
<p>Everyone had the opportunity to submit a website, salesletter, or marketing campaign for review by the expert panel. </p>
<p>Some people just needed to tweak a few things, while others were advised to start over again. (Painful, but better than struggling with something for years only to later find out it never had a chance of success.)</p>
<p>And we got to see first hand just how actionable the advice was, when just 1 day after being in the hot seat one guy completely re-built his website, instantly improving it beyond belief&#8230; and winning a mentoring spot with James for his efforts.</p>
<h3 style=text-align:center;>What About Real World Results?</h3>
<p>It&#8217;s all well and good to have great content, down to earth speakers and a friendly supporting atmosphere, but what about real world results of attendees?</p>
<p>Well, I saw on Facebook the other day that one guy (from Singapore) who spoke with Peter Parks for just 25 minutes made $2853 over the next few weeks. </p>
<p>One of my students landed a $9,000 website project soon after the event. And another did $30,000 in new business over a 2-week period.</p>

<p>The bottom line is live events are a fantastic way to meet new clients, get motivated and inspired, learn the latest tricks &#8216;n tactics, and network with people headed in the same direction as yourself.</p>
<p>Fast Web Formula was certainly a groundbreaking event and has raised the bar for everyone else.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Once your business is up and running one question you should always have in mind is, &#8220;How can I maximize what I&#8217;ve already got going?&#8221;.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s all too easy to fall into the trap of looking for the next &#8220;best&#8221; thing&#8230; the newest hot opportunity&#8230; without ever seeing the full potential of our existing assets.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a couple of really quick ways you can <em>dramatically</em> increase your offline business consulting profits in the next 3 months by leveraging the assets you already have.</p>
<p>First let&#8217;s get some basics out of the way&#8230;</p>
<p><span id="more-556"></span></p>
<p><strong>There are only 3 ways to grow a business:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Increase new customers.</li>
<li>Increase profit per sale.</li>
<li>Increase buying frequency.</li>
</ol>
<p>Everything you do to grow a business falls under one of those categories.</p>
<p>Most people focus on how to get more new customers &#8212; in fact it&#8217;s the #1 question I get &#8212; but that&#8217;s the most expensive and time consuming way to grow.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s MUCH quicker, cheaper and easier to increase profit and increase buying frequency.</p>
<p>So how do you do that in your consulting business?</p>
<p>Actually it&#8217;s really easy&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>1. Raise your prices.</strong></p>
<p>Almost every new consultant I&#8217;ve talked to has seriously undervalued what they bring to the table. Even people who have been at this for 5+ years are often charging less than half what they should.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re in the ballpark of &#8220;$500 for a website and $50 a month for SEO&#8221;, try multiplying your fee by 10 on the next job and see what happens.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re at &#8220;$5000 + $1000&#8243; multiply that by 10 for your next job. You might just get it.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re already getting projects for $20,000+ then add a performance-based fee on top. 5 &#8211; 25% is a good place to start, depending on the project.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;But my clients won&#8217;t pay that much&#8221;. </em></p>
<p>OK&#8230; 1) You don&#8217;t know that until you ask them. 2) Get better clients.</p>
<p>As long as you continue to demonstrate your value is much more than your fee, the sky is the limit on what you can charge.</p>
<p><strong>2. Get offline projects.</strong></p>
<p>Everyone is focused on online stuff &#8212; websites, autoresponders, SEO etc. That&#8217;s ok, it&#8217;s where your skills are, it&#8217;s &#8220;sexy&#8221;. I get it.</p>
<p>But think about this:</p>
<p>The upside potential for most of your clients online projects is in the low to mid 6-figures. Maybe less. So they&#8217;re willing to spend a certain amount to see those profits.</p>
<p>Whereas the upside potential for their offline projects &#8212; like fixing their direct mail, scripting their sales processes, putting headlines on their space ads, adding upsells &#038; cross sells to their marketing systems&#8230; that can easily be in worth millions to them. </p>
<p>And they&#8217;re willing to spend a lot more to see those profits</p>
<p>The best part is the offline stuff is usually less work for you and has a better chance of success than online projects.</p>
<p>So when you get a website or autoresponder project ask questions, find out what else they need help with. You should always be looking for the next project and actively moving them towards it.</p>
<p><strong>3. Do ONE thing at a time!</strong></p>
<p>I made this mistake myself for years. You get a client, ask a bunch of questions, find out everything they need help with, then launch one big MEGA project where you fix it all.</p>
<p>Hey, it looks impressive to them and you can get big fees doing it this way.</p>
<p>But you&#8217;ll soon find this type of working arrangement leads to the dreaded &#8220;feast or famine&#8221; routine where you&#8217;re REALLY busy for 2 months then haven&#8217;t got a client in sight or the next 2. </p>
<p>Plus you bog yourself down in multiple &#8220;mini projects&#8221; and it can be difficult to execute them all to the best of your ability.</p>
<p>Instead what I find works best, is you ask all your questions like normal&#8230; but then propose just ONE project to fix their most pressing problem. Focus all your energy and resources on that project, get a quick win and a happy client, then move them on to the next project.</p>
<p>Doing it this way you can charge almost the same amount for one project that you used to charge for the entire bunch, you&#8217;ll do better work and because you&#8217;re not multi-tasking as much you&#8217;ll get it done quicker. </p>
<p>Plus clients like it better because they get a quick win and start seeing results faster.</p>
<p>Do these three things and you <u>will</u> double your business faster and easier than you thought possible.

<p><strong>#3. Teams</strong></p>
<p>One of the first (and most eye-opening) business books I ever read was the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0887307280?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=consulti-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0887307280">E-Myth</a> by Michael Gerber. <img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=consulti-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0887307280" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></p>
<p>(If you haven&#8217;t read it yet, do yourself a favor and grab a copy.)</p>
<p>As well as learning all about the importance of systems, the big takeaway for me was that technical expertise &#8212; being <em>skilled</em> at what you do &#8212; can actually be <u>bad</u> for your business.</p>
<p>Sound a little strange? Let me explain&#8230;</p>
<p>See, what typically happens is the more skilled you are at your profession, the harder it is for you to &#8220;let go&#8221; and hand over the reigns to someone else.</p>
<p><em>The perfectionist in you says you&#8217;re the only one who can do it properly.</em></p>
<p>Of course, the problem is there&#8217;s only so many hours in the day. Only so much work you can do before you&#8217;re maxed out.</p>
<p>And when that happens&#8230; your income <em>instantly</em> stops growing. (In fact, what often happens is your income <u>drops</u> because burn out sets in and you back off.)</p>
<p>Smart business owners have figured out the real money is in being the <strong>marketer</strong> of their services, NOT the &#8220;doer&#8221;. Or as Gerber says, work ON your business not IN your business.</p>
<p>(Obviously you still need to produce quality stuff and get results for your clients, that&#8217;s a given. But an 80% solution in the hands of 100 people will have a bigger impact &#8212; and make you a LOT more money &#8212; than a 110% solution in the hands of no one.)</p>
<p><u>All</u> of the top consultants I know (the guys and gals making <em>well</em> into 6-figures) have teams in place that do most of the &#8220;grunt&#8221; work.</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, many of the people still trying to do everything themselves have hit an income ceiling and wonder why they can&#8217;t crack the magic 6-figure mark.</p>
<p><strong>My advice:</strong> </p>
<p>Setup your teams early and position yourself for fast growth from day 1.</p>
<p>For example, your team might include people for:</p>
<ul>
<li><b>Content</b></li>
<li><b>Websites</b></li>
<li><b>SEO</b></li>
<li><b>Research</b></li>
<li><b>Mastermind</b></li>
</ul>
<p>This leaves you to focus on the <u>one</u> thing that matters&#8230; <i>getting clients!</i></p>

<p><strong>#2. Systems</strong></p>
<p>I get to talk to a lot of up-n-coming consultants, and without doubt a BIG reason they struggle is a lack of systems &#8212; a lack of <em>consistency</em> &#8212; in everything they do.</p>
<p>See, it&#8217;s easy to get a client or two.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to make some fast cash.</p>
<p>But without systems &#8212; systems for attracting prospects, converting them into clients, and moving them quickly into your highest paid products and services &#8212; systems that are executed <u>religiously</u>&#8230; then it&#8217;s easy to let things slide.</p>
<p>Before you know it&#8230;</p>
<ul>
<li>You&#8217;re &#8220;busy&#8221; working IN your business, but haven&#8217;t done a thing to grow your client base in weeks.</li>
<li>You&#8217;re chasing leads, pressing the flesh and kissing babies&#8230; yet more and more prospects are slipping through the cracks.</li>
<li>You&#8217;ve undercharged for a project that you <em>know</em> you should have got at least <u>twice</u> as much for.</li>
</ul>
<p>And it all could have been avoided with a few sheets of paper and some discipline!</p>
<p>To give you an idea of how powerful simple systems can be, one of my students credits two of my 1-page business planning documents as one of the reasons he did over $45,000 new business in just 3 months during the &#8217;09 &#8220;recession&#8221;.</p>
<p>While everyone else was moaning about the economy, he executed a proven system and had a breakthrough year in his business.</p>
<p>All thanks to two pieces of paper.</p>
