Reasons to Keep Your Kitchen Color Choices Neutral

It seems we’re always being told to stay neutral in our color schemes. Why is that? Do designers just want us to be boring and safe so they can have all the fun in their own homes? Hardly. The truth of the matter is, neutral doesn’t have to mean “boring,” and there are plenty of reasons that point to neutral being the smarter option.

Kitchen buyers are particular

I hate to state the obvious, but for the sake of being thorough, here goes. If you’re selling your home, neutral is a safer choice than other color schemes. Although it’s possible, chances are the person viewing your home will not care for your red refrigerator in quite the same fashion you do. If you're planning to sell your home at some point, you'd be better off going with stainless steel, black or white. Same goes for those funky countertop and cabinet colors. It's tempting, but could cost you money down the road.

Our tastes change

As much as you want to believe you will love your choice in 10 more years, think about the things you loved 10 years ago. In fact, those may be the current choices in your kitchen that you’re trying to replace…and chances are, you got sick of them years ago. Take a moment to think through the decades, and reflect on the choices you’ve made (or didn’t make). Of course, there are more options available in today’s world, but just because they make a teal fridge, doesn’t mean it’s the right choice.

Replacement availability

You may be feeling adventurous, but please think long-term availability. Color popularity changes from year to year, and although you may be 110% sure you’ll never stop loving a color, the manufacturer may not feel the same way. A few years down the road, your appliances, countertop or paint colors may become discontinued. So, if one of your pieces gets damaged and there are no exact replacements, you may be stuck with a mismatched kitchen – or a large replacement bill.

There are plenty of ways to make a neutral kitchen appear bold and daring without including permanent long-term commitments. Add some fun color pops that you’ll be able to change the moment they start to irk your senses. Think anything easily removable: hand towels, vases, dinnerware, artwork, curtains, etc. Even painting the walls is a safe – changeable option. By incorporating style through accessories, you’re minimizing your chances of developing a future kitchen headache. There are so many ways to bring style into your home – is a bright fridge really your best option?

Romantic Accents for Your Kitchen in 2012

Ahhh, its Valentine’s Day. The hearts, flowers, candy, teddy bears…your kitchen?! Yes your kitchen! Today is a day filled with love and romance, so it got us in the mood to inspire you with some romantic kitchen update ideas. After all, what better place is there to set a love-inspired ambience than the “heart of the home”?

Romance is a mood, a feeling. Think soft, clean and curvy. Don’t feel like you have to do all of this today – it’s a little late in the day to get started, but romance doesn’t have to come only once a year. Use Valentine’s Day as an inspiration to create a romantic setting that will last for years. Here are some ideas to get you going.

Lighting

When it comes to kitchen lighting, we have one word: Soft. Indirect lighting has a nice soft effect. Add lighting under the cabinets for a warm glow. Change out your kitchen cabinet doors with soft glass inserts and install cabinet lighting on the inside. Light reflecting in a cabinet full of glass or crystal pieces gives a beautiful touch of romance. Adding a dimmer switch to your pre-existing overhead lights is an easy and inexpensive change as well. Dimmers will help give that candle lit dinner ambience, and who doesn’t love that?

If you really want to go the extra mile, add a beautiful chandelier above the dining area to really set the tone, or a decorative glass backsplash to help add some soft reflection. If you have the resources and space, you may even be able to install a fireplace to help with those after-dinner smores.

Appliances

Romantic may not be the word that comes to mind when you are thinking about appliances, but let’s give it a try. You want the kitchen to be warm and inviting- and if done correctly, it will ultimately become a comfortable gathering place for friends and family. Think about items that would make entertaining a little bit easier. Double oven, convection oven, warming drawer, beverage centers complete with a small refrigerator to help hold appetizers and drinks, bottle openers and wine chillers. Appliances, such as refrigerators, are now made with a cleaner, rounded edge which softens up the look. You can even find kitchen sinks and faucets with a soft curve to them.

Personal Touch

This is where you can really play up the romantic feel (and you still have time to do some of these suggestions today). Think candles, china, crystal, Frank Sinatra music in the background, picture frames, a beautiful fresh coat of paint, lace-place settings, flowers and curtains. Nothing says romance in a kitchen like material. Think soft, flowing fabric…blowing in the breeze when the window is slightly open. Add a few cozy comfortable chairs and you are set.

We Need Some Light In This Kitchen - Part 2

In part one of this article, we talked about ways to add artificial light into a dark kitchen. Here we will journey into the world of natural light.

Home with a view

Are you lucky enough to have a home with a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains? Can you imagine seeing something so beautiful every time you walk in the kitchen? Even just looking into a back yard full of flowers is enough to lift your spirits and connect you with the outdoors. Designers can create almost any type of window nowadays, so don’t disregard any ideas until you actually research them.

Everyone’s space is different, but if your kitchen is large enough (and in an ideal location), consider removing your boring wall and replacing it with a wall of windows for a dramatic approach. If the space does not allow, you may be able to increase the size of your current windows, or have several smaller windows installed. If you need to increase your storage space think about framing your windows with cabinets. Do you have a kitchen or an eating area with a standard door leading to the outside? To open up this space, replace the existing door with a glass door, install beautiful french doors, or put in sliding glass doors.

Home without a view

There are tricks to bring in natural light even for those of you who don't have a stellar view. A skylight in your ceiling would be a great way to fill your home with sunlight, while saving you money on energy bills. If you want windows, but don’t have a spectacular view, get to work and create your own! Design a landscape garden in your back yard with a border of tall shrubs. This way, you can still add large windows for natural light, while also creating something appealing to look at.

If you simply do not want to see any more of your outside space, or you have nosy neighbors that would delight in the clearer window view, ask about installing windows just below the ceiling line. This way you’ll still get natural light, while maintaining your privacy.

However you decide to brighten up your space, you won’t regret it. Whether your kitchen welcomes artificial or natural light solutions, you’ll find that your newly lit kitchen will make your kitchen more inviting, and have positive effects on the mood of you and your family.

We Need Some Light In This Kitchen - Part 1

Is your kitchen stuck in a time warp with really bad lighting? If you have an older home, chances are your kitchen is in the middle of the house with no windows, and one sad small incandescent light fixture high on the ceiling, or a headache inducing flickering florescent light. There are options out there to brighten things up without spending money on a total make over.

Ceiling Lighting

Replace old lights with track lighting. It can give a modern flair and bring the light closer to your workspace. You can also add as many light heads as you need, or move them around to the areas where light is needed. If your ceiling is too low, another option is to add recessed lighting. For another decorative light option, choose pendant lighting.

Under and Above Cabinet Lighting

Installing lights under the upper cabinets can give more task lighting, which is especially great for meal preparation….for instance, when you’re using a sharp knife! Using under cabinet lighting is also a great way to add distinction and style to your kitchen with the many different lighting choices out there; halogen, LED, and Xenon, etc. You can also place lights above the cabinets aimed at the ceiling for a beautiful glow.

There are a few tricks besides just lighting that can brighten the space up as well. Reflective surfaces like ceramic tile, stainless steel, mirrors, or a glass tile backsplash have great effects from artificial light. Another trick is to replace some of your old cabinet doors with glass panels, which will help bounce the light around the room.

You will be amazed at how much a little light can change the look of your kitchen. The space will feel much brighter, cleaner and larger. And hey, it may even inspire you to dust off your “The Joy of Cooking” cookbook and put it to good use.

Creating a Bathroom for the Kids

So, my son turned 3 years old this year and has graduated to his own “big boy” bathroom. No problem, I just ran out to the store and bought some cute choo-choo train decorations-done. Wait! He can’t reach anything, there are water stains on the cabinet doors and they are chipped up from the step stool banging into them, he has smashed his fingers umpteen times, and what is this sticky stuff I am stepping in all over the floor?! Time for a re-do!

A complete bathroom remodel can be a little pricey, and you may decide that eventually they will just “grow into it.” Either way, below are some ideas that can make your little one’s life a little easier.

Think soft-close...everything

If you are ordering new cabinets you can get cabinet doors and drawers with soft-close hinges. Another option is to purchase the kits to install on the existing cabinets to do it yourself and keep the cost down. And may I even suggest a soft-close toilet lid for all the slamming that goes on!

Height is a factor

If you can order custom cabinets, they will make it fit to your exact specifications. However, for a better cost solution, the shortest standard height for factory made cabinets is about 29 inches, which is should accommodate the munchkins. There are also toilets made for children with a lower height of 10 inches.

Clean this mess

When choosing your cabinets you will want to make sure they are waterproof. Wood cabinets can be stained or painted with a waterproof paint. Another idea is to opt for either a laminate or Thermofoil cabinet, which on top of looking great are very easy to clean. A soft damp cloth and a gentle cleaning solution should get those little fingerprints off in no time.

There are plenty of kid-friendly options for your bathroom, but remember, they grow quickly. Keep in mind functionality with easy fixes for now - unless you want to do an expensive remodel again in a few years.

Which Cabinets Wood You Buy?

Are you looking for kitchen cabinet design ideas, but overwhelmed by the selection and don't know where to begin? In this situation the old adage comes to mind, "never judge a book by its cover." Here are a few things to think about that can make your decision a little easier and more educated.

There are many types of wood species, but as far as cabinets are concerned, the most commonly used are Oak, Maple, Cherry, Hickory and Birch. Keeping this in mind, some of the key factors when choosing cabinets are durability, cost and appearance.

Durability

How much wear and tear will your cabinets need to withstand? Is your kitchen a high-traffic area with lots of cooking and kids running around constantly? Or, is it simply a little haven to drink wine? Hickory, Maple and Oak are all very durable choices and will help hide the nicks and scratches over time.

Cost

If your budget is a deciding factor, you are better off to choose a species that is more popular and common, such as Oak or even Pine. The more rare species, such as Cherry, Walnut and Hickory will surely drive up the price.

Appearance

So if you really do only drink wine in your kitchen, you may make your decision solely based on looks. In this case, your kitchen remodel choices are endless. One thing that will help is to know the different wood grains; open, medium or closed. The more open grains, such as Oak and Hickory, have more texture to them which is great for a casual and cozy feel. The more closed grains, such as Cherry and Maple, lead way for more of a rich, sophisticated and elegant look. If you are still not sure, stick with Oak. This is a great standard among the cabinet species. Oak gives you a good price and a wide array of colors.

Feng Shui Basics for your Kitchen Remodel - Part 1

The philosophies and practices have been around for thousands of years, and today it is used not only by the Chinese, but all over the world in decisions regarding placement of buildings, doors, appliances, colors or even flowers. Many designers have also adopted the principles, perhaps agreeing with Winston Churchill’s statement, “We shape our dwelling and afterwards our dwellings shape us.” It's Feng Shui - the art and practice that governs spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to patterns of yin and yang and the flow of energy (chi).

Since the kitchen is our favorite topic of discussion, I thought I’d share some basic Feng Shui principles that I’ve found regarding the heart of the home - feel free to add more in the comments section. Whether you choose to exercise Feng Shui philosophies in your everyday life or not is your decision, but we can’t help but notice they’ve got some undeniably great kitchen design tips.

Feng Shui in Your Kitchen Remodel

Feng Shui principles say that your kitchen is connected to the state of your health, family harmony and flow of abundance in your life. It nourishes and sustains life – pretty straightforward. Although it goes way more in depth than we’ll go today, here are some basic principles I found interesting:

It’s about balance - The kitchen is home to many elements of nature: fire(stove), water(sink/dishwasher), earth (granite, stone), metal, and wood. While everyone’s circumstances are unique, it is important to keep everything balanced. You don’t want to place two opposing elements (such as fire and water) directly next to each other, as they will clash and throw off the chi, inviting negative energy. If it is unavoidable, find a way to balance the two by incorporating another element.

Basic Layout – For an optimal flow of energy, it is advised that the kitchen not be too close to the front or back door, so as to avoid the escape of energy. A balanced kitchen should also be square or rectangular, avoiding an overall triangular shape, but the working triangle is a good way to balance your appliances within. Typically, it is not advised to have a kitchen in the center of your home.

Stove Location – When deciding where to place the stove (which represents health and wealth), Feng Shui principals say that the cook should be able to see all entrances and most of the room while standing at the stove. If your stove location demands you have your back to the room, place a mirror above the stove to give visibility. The stove should not be directly above a window as it provides heat (prosperity), and you don’t want your prosperity flowing out the window.

Manage your space – If you have a small or narrow kitchen, widen or enlarge it by adding mirrors. Also, make sure you have a place for everything, and everything in its place. You want to be sure to avoid clutter in all areas of the kitchen, but feel free to display cooking utensils and cookbooks, as they represent nourishment and a welcoming feeling.

Proper lighting – Make sure you have good quality natural and artificial lighting. If you currently have fluorescent lights in your kitchen, you may want to rethink them in your upcoming kitchen remodel. There is a wide belief that they do not promote good health as they can cause eyestrain, headaches and hypertension. It is also recommended that you have multiple layers of lighting (perhaps under-cabinet and track lighting?) rather than one overhead light.

There is clearly a lot to be learned in the way of Feng Shui – we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface. The most important aspect in a Feng Shui remodel, and with any kitchen remodel, is that your room flows, has good balance and is a happy, inviting place. As you should always try to keep your own heart healthy, you should also try to keep a healthy “heart of the home.”

Another year…another another new start. It is the perfect time to make a change in your home. How many times have you said you’re going to remodel your kitchen, but never actually got around to starting? Now that the Times Square ball has dropped, make sure you don’t drop the ball on honoring this year’s resolution.

Sure, there are 1,001 excuses you can come up with to talk yourself out of your goals, and while we have 1,001 rebuttals to those excuses, we’ll just go ahead and leave you with the top 5 reasons why this year is the time to remodel your home.

Remodel your home this year

Here’s why:

It’s a buyer’s market – The housing market is still down and that means dealers and suppliers are willing to work with you more than ever before. Prices should be more in your favor, and because business isn’t as slamming as before, your project will be their main focus.
Survival of the fittest – The economy has been brutal on kitchen and bath dealers leaving many of them forced to shut their dealership doors. That means that the dealer you choose to work with has survived. In this market, anyone with bad business practices and poor customer service would have slim to no chance of survival, so you should be confident in the one that is still here to help.
You’re not moving – Chances are you’re not selling your house any time soon. Why not fix up your kitchen now so that you can enjoy it for the next couple years? If you do end up selling at that time, you’ll get a better return with a good remodel. Enjoy your kitchen while you have to stay, and make money on the remodel later. It’s a win-win situation.
Invest now to save later – There are many remodel options that end up paying for themselves in the long run such as energy efficient appliances that save you money on water and electricity. So although you may not want to put forth money on a remodel, a green kitchen can be worth your while and help you save.
Interest rates low – If you have good credit and are looking to remodel your kitchen or bath, act now while home equity interest rates are in your favor. They’ve been at a historic low, so chances are, the only direction they’ll go from now on is up.

So if you think about it, there is really no better time to remodel than now in many cases. So instead of wasting a good New Year’s resolution on a fitness goal that you’ll forget about in a month, resolve to remodel your kitchen while everything is in your favor.

Planning for the Chaos of your Kitchen Remodel

With all the excitement of your upcoming kitchen renovation, it's probably not the first thing on your mind to make a plan for the chaos. Sure, you've thought about which cabinet doors you want, which slab of granite matches them perfectly, and that really cool bamboo floor. So once you have everything picked out and the contractor scheduled, it should be smooth sailing...right? Not so fast. How are you going to cook dinner after work when your oven is sitting in the middle of your living room floor?

A kitchen remodel takes time. It can last weeks or even months, so make sure you gather some make-shift kitchen necessities before your project gets underway. It's going to seem a little bit like a flashback to your college dorm life or living with your first roommate. Chances are you survived without a kitchen then (or created a solution so that your roommate wouldn't eat all of your food), so think back to how you made it through those days.

Kitchen remodel survival items

A Mini-fridge - Move a small mini-fridge (with a freezer compartment) into the next room and fill it with easy fix meals such as sandwiches, salads, or even hotdogs you can throw on the grill. Don't forget the cereal and milk!
Microwave and electric toaster – The meal options increase exponentially when you have a microwave on-hand. You can find several microwavable meals at the grocery store which are easy to pop in at a moment’s notice. (Think lean cuisines, steam fresh vegetables & rice, breakfast sandwiches, hot pockets, easy-mac, pre-made lasagna, etc.). An electric toaster will allow you to cook mini pizzas, grilled cheese and other hot sandwiches.
Beverages – What kind of beverages did you need to stock up on in college? Oh right, several bottles of...umm... water (I know what you were thinking and like where your mind was headed, but this is remodel survival, not a party, and there is only so much room in the mini-fridge. Save those beer bottles for your first gathering in your newly remodeled kitchen).
Red wine – Luckily, red wine doesn’t need to be refrigerated – go ahead and stock up on as many bottles as you see fit (it may help you relax a bit), but don't forget your corkscrew.
Disposable dinnerware - Make sure to have a stock of paper and plastic dinnerware for easy clean ups (paper plates, plastic cups, forks, knives, spoons, napkins, paper towels, etc). If dishes are a must, remember you always have the bathroom sink.
Cutting surface – In case you do find yourself needing to slice vegetables, etc, you'll want to make sure you have your cutting-board handy as well as at least one sharp knife.
Soap/towels/sponges – Although most of your dinnerware will likely be disposable, you're sure to come across things that do need to be cleaned (your cutting-board for starters).

Your kitchen remodel project will be expensive enough without you having to add nightly restaurant costs to the budget. It also doesn’t mean you have to give up on family meals at home. Think ahead and create a temporary kitchen for your family. If you don't have a mini-fridge or movable microwave, ask your friends/neighbors, or check craigslist for local postings. Have fun with the situation and remember- it is only temporary.

Kitchen Flow Fix Tricks - Bringing the Family Together

There are many things going on in the kitchen these days besides just cooking. Gone is the “simple life,” so while families get busier, why not get creative to keep everyone nearby as much as possible?

While removing obstacles, opening the kitchen up to other areas of the house and creating more storage are great ways to improve your flow, inviting others into the kitchen area is another option.

Kitchen work-area

Designate a simple work-area that will allow your spouse to get work done while spending time in the kitchen area with you; or have the kids finish up that homework assignment while you keep an eye on them. While you probably don’t want a full office in your kitchen, you can make sure to have the essentials:

Worktop – Make sure there is a designated worktop area that won’t interfere with your cooking-space. A corner tabletop or an island overhang may provide a perfect setting.
Seating – placing comfortable chairs or stools at the designated worktop area will be inviting to those tired feet. These seats should fit under the worktop so as not to interfere with the kitchen flow.
Outlets – Make sure you have convenient plugs and outlets under the worktop (including an internet hookup if your wireless isn’t always reliable).
Storage - built-in cubbies or drawers will be a convenient place to keep pens, papers, laptops, etc available, but hidden when not in use. Make sure there is enough storage so that the work-area doesn’t become an eye-sore.

A kitchen work-area may be just what you need to get a little extra family time in your evenings. And when the family isn’t using the area, this will be the perfect place to set your laptop or iPad so that it is not in your way, but close enough to jump online to find that recipe you need.

As you can see, your kitchen can really become anything you want it to with the right amount of planning. There are an endless number of kitchen design options that will make your life easier and hopefully better. Kitchen Flow Fix Tricks – Improving Storage Without Compromising Openness

A kitchen remodel seems like such a huge undertaking, especially when there are lots of other home projects to do, but when you have a clear idea of what you want, the task will not seem as daunting. Many of us were "blessed" with old-fashioned layouts that separate the cook from the rest of the house. Although this may provide an extra row of storage, you shouldn’t have to feel like you're banned from socializing or watching TV with the family while preparing an amazing spread.

Maybe you want an open kitchen concept, but need so much storage space that it seems impossible. Rest assured - there are plenty of fix tricks for improving your kitchen storage.

Island Storage

Instead of having the breakfast bar separating the kitchen and living room, remove it and have a center kitchen island installed. This will open things up more, while inviting great new storage options above and below the countertop. In addition, it can act as a place for your kids or spouse to sit and keep you company, or get some extra work done.

Get Creative

In addition to traditional cabinet storage, get creative - hanging your pots and pans is not only great convenient storage, but can be artwork as well when done in a tasteful way. Personalizing additions for your remodel can also allow you to create designated areas for your favorite kitchen "extras."

Extra Storage Tips

Keep in mind that cabinets come in many different sizes and styles. Ask your designer if taller 42 or 48-inch upper cabinets would look right in your kitchen instead of the shorter options. If so, make sure to add a cute stepping stool and you’ve got yourself some extra overhead space. You may also find that subtle upgrades such as roll-out trays or under-mount drawer glides will give you access to otherwise unusable space.

Take some extra time to think about what it is you'd like to store, and research ways other people have overcome similar obstacles. Kitchen Flow Fix Tricks - Appliance Placement

Do you ever just stand in your kitchen and find yourself frustrated because things are not how they should be? You are always dripping water all over the floor while trying to load dishes into the dishwasher; or maybe every time you open the fridge it bangs into the pantry doors. I have gone so far as spilling a casserole dish while attempting the long treacherous trek between the preparation top (all the way across the kitchen) to the oven. If you catch yourself daydreaming about how your kitchen would look if you could re-design it, maybe it’s time.

There are plenty of commonly missed kitchen remodel details that could make all the difference in the enjoyment level of your kitchen layout. The following are a few things to think about with regards to your kitchen appliances:

Appliance Details

Take a moment to think about who in your family spends the majority of their time in the kitchen. Are they right or left-handed? When you purchase a refrigerator, you can often request for the handle to be on either side. If you don’t want a solely “left” or “right-handed" fridge, a French door refrigerator may be just the solution you’re looking for.

Appliance Location

Be mindful of surrounding details before making a final decision so as not to ram a perpendicular wall or block any doorways with your new fridge. If you’re installing a new stove, you won’t want this to block an entryway when opened, as that is an accident waiting to happen. You also will want to avoid having a range or cooktop at the end of a cabinet run.

Other Appliance Tips

When it comes to doing the dishes, it would make things easier for a lefty if the dishwasher were placed on the left side of the sink. As for the stove, perhaps the right-handed cook would like to have more drawer space on the right side of the stove, making it easier to grab utensils.

It is important to think through all of the details before getting started on your kitchen remodel. You probably already have a place for all of your appliances, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that is the best area for them. While doing some traveling recently, a very important component about designing a kitchen occurred to me. Your kitchen will most certainly indicate what you should be doing in it, how long you should be lingering, and if you will find yourself in good company while in it. Basically, your kitchen inadvertently tells you what to do while you are there.

Now back to the part of how this phenomenon originally came to me. I always find it fascinating that each city has its own culture and pulse. This is noticeable in everything from the cuisine, locals attitudes, accents, types of homes, and of course – interior of homes. My first stop was none other than the beautiful Lake Tahoe. First of all, wow – what a great city. This entire city had the “great outdoors” rustic feel to it. Even back at our cozy cabin, there was that same rustic feel. You get the idea…fireplace burning, maple cabinets, and of course hot chocolate for our disposal.

What it said

The aesthetic of our particular kitchen in Lake Tahoe told me to take it easy, and consequently I ended up making fairly easy recipes like chili and pizza. That particular kitchen also told me to get out of the kitchen and into the living room where everyone was circled around the fireplace. This kitchen was not intended to be the focal point of the house, and so, it wasn’t.

Flash forward to Thanksgiving in Turks and Caicos – the entire focal point of the kitchen seemed to be margarita glasses – so this kitchen must want me to drink a margarita. Also, the kitchen was bright and open to the living room which made it easier to bake island fish dishes while still mingling with my family. I practically lived in this kitchen, and was happy to do it. The bright colors and open space made this space hugely inviting for everyone to settle in.

Back at home

This got me thinking, what is my kitchen at home telling me to do? Having remodeled my entire kitchen only two years ago with a local cabinet dealer – I was very specific that I wanted a kitchen that said, “Eat, drink, and be merry.” Now that I have had the opportunity of reflecting on what it is I actually do in my kitchen two years later, I can honestly say they did a great job – this is exactly what we do. The designer I worked with created an open space from the area I cook in, directly to the dining room and living room. There is a bar where my family frequently just sits and chats while one of us prepares a meal. It is a place where we quite literally eat, drink and are merry.

If you are in the process of remodeling or redesigning a brand new kitchen, just remember, your kitchen is going to be a place with a lot of action (or not) and either is fine – just know that you and your designer are the ones controlling the voice of your future kitchen. Tell your designer what you expect out of your kitchen, and your kitchen will tell you what it expects for years to come.

Kitchen remodels are confusing enough as it is, but when trying to decide whether to purchase cabinets from a mainstream cabinet manufacturer or a smaller one, there are options to weigh. In part one of this article, we touched on the pros and cons of mainstream cabinet manufacturer products, so here are some things to think about when considering a smaller manufacturer's offerings:

On one hand

Working with a small cabinet manufacturer has some advantages over the big boys. These companies are often able to offer exceptional service, tailoring the experience to match each customer. While the larger manufacturers are investing in consistency, the smaller guys are investing more in the product details. For example, they may offer plywood sides as an everyday item versus making it an upgrade.

The smaller companies are more likely to produce a unique product that you are less likely to see in your neighbor’s kitchen. This can be the most important factor for those looking to stand out from the crowd. Smaller companies generally do more to earn your business.

On the other hand

The little guys have their downsides too. Their ability to offer virtually endless customizations can result in greater variations in products and finishes. In addition, longer lead times and less predictable delivery dates are often the norm. For those of us who are impatient and hate delays, this is an important factor in choosing your cabinet manufacturer. And of course, you typically pay more for similar cabinets because smaller manufacturers don’t enjoy many of the efficiencies that make the bigger guys so successful.

What it all comes down to

The bottom line when comparing these two types of cabinet manufacturers is simple. Do you want a predictable experience with an efficient outcome even if it means having a noticeably smaller selection? Or do you want unique cabinetry unlike your neighbors and ability to upgrade, even if it means paying more and likely having to be more flexible with your schedule? There's really no wrong way to go, it's all a matter of preference.

As a consumer searching for new cabinets for your kitchen, you are invariably going to come up against this question: Which is a better route to go - purchasing cabinets manufactured by a large mainstream cabinet manufacturer or from a smaller provider? Both options have their pros and cons, and in this two part article, we will touch on strengths and weaknesses of each to see which route might be best for you. Part 1 will discuss pros and cons of larger mainstream manufacturers:

On one hand

Mainstream cabinet manufacturers have many advantages over the small, independent manufacturer. They tend to have larger advertising and marketing budgets, and therefore are recognizable. Name recognition is a powerful tool in any business, including the cabinet industry. In fact, many remodeling projects get started because of a well-placed TV ad or seeing a particular brand’s delivery trucks on the road.

Large cabinet manufacturers are more than just a recognizable name, however. They also tend to be more consistent with their product offering. It's a pretty safe bet that most mainstream manufacturers have been in business for a long time and have streamlined their cabinet operations over the years to the point where production times can be predicted down to an exact day. These organizations invest money in consistency. Efficient processes make for lower prices in many circumstances. A combination of lowest price and fast, predictable production times can be the most swaying factor when considering these brands.

On the other hand

Large cabinet manufacturers do have some downsides. Their strong focus on efficiency and production time means they often offer a range of products that is good, but may not be as broad as smaller manufacturers. Typically, large manufacturers offer significantly less customization options than their smaller competitors. Many large manufacturers employ more of a “take it or leave it” business model, which allows them to be singularly focused and enjoy a predictable outcome.

When making decisions regarding your kitchen remodel, all of your options really come down to a matter of preference, budget and timeframe. Choosing your cabinet manufacturer is no different. Don't Let A Kitchen Remodel Delay Ruin Your Holiday

You started your remodel with plans of finishing just before the holidays, so hopefully you and your contractor were able to stick to the schedule and finish your new kitchen on time. But as you may already know, there is always a chance of surprises that arise unexpectedly to extend the timeline of your remodel.

Why does this happen? Kitchen remodels are difficult to plan down to a “t”. When planning a remodel, you should always create a timeline for everyone involved. On your copy, overestimate the time it will take for everything to be finalized so that there is no extra stress when something takes longer than expected. Every home is different, and you can almost guarantee there will be a damaged part here, a missing piece there, emergency leveling, rewiring, or a suddenly ill contractor. Try to stay calm in these circumstances. The last thing you want is for someone to rush through your remodel - making more mistakes.

If your holiday tradition gets roasted this year due to an untimely remodel completion, forget serving microwave turkey with a side of sawdust. There are plenty of alternative options for your celebration.

Rent a house for the weekend. Who says you have to cook in your kitchen this year? If you still want to host the party, pack up your cooking gear and head off to a rental property for the weekend. You can still create the same recipe masterpieces, but in a beautiful make-shift location.

Borrow someone’s kitchen. If you have a good friend or family member who dreads holidays because of the work involved, become their hero by offering to cook for them in the comfort of their own home. Let them know how much you’re going to miss that task due to your extended project, and you’ll probably find many people welcome to the idea. Unless they open the invite, limit the number of your added guests to immediate family only, and certainly pay for your portion of the ingredients. To avoid any speed bumps, make sure you inventory their cooking space and tools prior to the big day.

Try a local restaurant. You may not love the idea of eating at the local Italian restaurant, but make sure you research your options before dismissing this suggestion entirely. Many local restaurants offer traditional holiday meals that may even *gasp* top your beloved family recipes. Impossible that anything could be better than your famous sweet potato soufflé? You may change your mind upon the realization that instead of slaving over a stove all day, you’ll be able to kick up your feet and relax while your meal literally arrives on a silver platter, or an endless buffet table.

Postpone your gathering. Who says your celebration has to fall on one specific day? Thanksgiving doesn’t even have a solid date in the United States, other than “the fourth Thursday of the month of November,” so why not do something small on that day and then have everyone over for your special recipes the weekend after your kitchen is finished. That way, you can celebrate the holiday and your project completion.

Your kitchen remodel may have set you back a little, but it’s not the end of the world. Instead of taking the chance of serving your great Aunt Mildred pumpkin pie with a dollop of caulking… (woops, it looked like whipped cream) make the best of your situation. Who knows, you may even stumble upon a new tradition that you like better.

Personalized Additions for Your Kitchen Remodel

Have you ever denied yourself things that you love - another cookbook, another beautiful antique dish, or that extra bottle of wine - simply because you couldn’t possibly find the right place to store them without feeling like a hoarder? Well, if you’re remodeling to stay (vs. remodeling to sell) you may be in luck. Now is the time to find ways to tastefully embrace these little extras. After all, they’re a part of you…why not make them a place of their own in your new kitchen?

The following are some personalized additions that may make your beloved “extras” the star of your kitchen:

Cookbook Shelf or Storage - If you have the room in your kitchen, why not make an area designated for your cookbooks and magazines? This can be built in at eye-level (if your books are not tacky), or even on the end of your island. If you don’t want them on display, ask your designer about unique storage solutions they know of. No one wants to get rid of their favorite recipes, and you never know when you’ll need one of the books you don’t use, so create a space for them.

Wine options - If you consider yourself a wine connoisseur, and typically have more than a few bottles of wine in the house at any given time, incorporate a built in wine-rack for your kitchen. Many cabinet shops offer options for wine-racks. This would be a great way to utilize the space above the refrigerator if it doesn’t get used frequently. Or, if you like chilled wine, research options for installing a wine cooler if you have the room.

Plate display - If you don’t have a dining room to host your beloved china dishes, or just don’t have enough space there, consider including some glass doors into your kitchen cabinets to display your dishes. Don’t forget to include built-in cabinet lighting to complete the look. If your collection is large, perhaps you could showcase some of them proudly above your cabinets, or incorporate a plate display rack. Always remember not to overdue it.

There are many options available for kitchen organization and personalization, so now is the time to think about every last detail and build a kitchen that is optimized for your specific needs.

With the holidays just around the corner, the heart of the home (your kitchen) will come alive with festive foods, cocktail parties, and caroling. Maybe not the caroling, but at least the cocktails. I’ve been to many holiday bashes and I must say – nothing compares to a great host. There is something to be said about walking into a home and getting the vibe that all is in order and you are in good hands.

So how do you be a good host? The holidays are a great time to brush up on this - so I reached out to a business and etiquette professional. Savannah Shaw is certified by the Protocol School of Washington and The Etiquette & Leadership Institute, and answered my top questions.

CV: What are your top three rules of etiquette when hosting a party?
SS:

Decide whether your event will be formal or informal and proceed accordingly, don't switch back and forth.
Be conscious of customs, religious holidays and such so as not to cause conflicts in scheduling.
If you send out an invitation, put as much information on it as possible, so that guests know what to expect.

CV: Is there any "golden rule" that is an absolute no-no for the host?
SS: Don't drink too much.

CV: How should you seat your guest?
SS: The guest of honor should be seated to the host's right.

CV: If a man was hosting the party, are the rules still the same?
SS: Yes.

CV: If you have a more casual style get-together (i.e. cookout), how do the etiquette rules differ from a typical dinner party?
SS: Dinner parties tend to be more informal now, unless for ceremonies or perhaps business. Nevertheless, it's important to remember that proper thought, organization, and manners will result in the very loveliest occasion.

CV: Any small tips for being a host?
SS:

Once guests start to arrive, relax. Your role is to put everyone at ease, and you can't do that if you are not.
Don't concern yourself with keeping up with the Joneses. YOU are hosting the party, not the Joneses.

Why a Kitchen Designer's Product Knowledge Matters.

The phrase “knowledge is power,” was coined by Sir Francis Bacon in 1597. While that was over 400 years ago, the phrase still rings true today and is prevalent in the remodel industry. Yet, we still come across them: salespeople that go blank thinking of ways to either answer your question, or get out of answering it. It’s bad enough when all you want to know is where the bathroom is, but if you’re asking a kitchen professional about a product they carry - and they can’t answer you - then you should be worried.

As a consumer, it’s important that you do some homework so that you’ll have an idea of what you want to incorporate in your kitchen or bathroom project; but it’s the kitchen expert’s job to know their products well enough to try to fit your needs. Good kitchen professionals know the products they sell like the palm of their hand.

You need to be able to spot these knowledgeable salespeople in order to get the best value for your money. Here are a few ways you can tell if the person you’re talking to has the expertise to lead you to the room of your dreams.

Confidence and Enthusiasm: A sales person that knows his/her products should be confident that they can help you, and they should believe in what they are offering. If they’re uncertain and ignorant about their products, how can you place your confidence or enthusiasm with them as designer?

Communication Skills: Knowing ones product allows the professional to craft their product message to your unique situation. Make sure your salesperson is listening. They shouldn’t be giving you a canned sales pitch once they know more details about your situation. A knowledgeable salesperson should not only give examples of products that will work for you, but they should also explain why they will work.
The following are some questions a good salesperson should be able to answer:

How is the product priced?
What are the available colors, sizes and options?
What are the cabinets made of?
How long will delivery take?
Is there a warranty?
Is this product considered a green product?

Some design professionals are great “talkers,” but you should work with the one that makes you feel secure and excited about placing your kitchen project in their hands. Ask yourself, “Am I confident that this person will know what to do if a problem arises during my remodel?” Chances are, a designer with good product knowledge will have the expertise needed to make your remodel experience as smooth and pleasant as possible.

A First-Hand Look Into a Kitchen Designer's Own Kitchen Remodel - Part 3 of 3

Earlier this year, my husband and I decided to take on our own kitchen remodeling project. Since then, sanity has returned to our kitchen and we have been able to enjoy the fruits of our labor! Part 1 and Part 2 of this series discuss tradeoffs and setbacks… both of which are very real with a project that has so many different elements.

Statistics show that most people will tackle a major kitchen remodel only once (if at all) in their lifetime. As you dream about your own remodel, consider replacing more than just the cabinets and countertops, if possible. A truly functional kitchen consists of more than pretty cabinets and tops. What good are beautiful new cabinets if your old lighting scheme doesn’t do them justice and doesn’t allow you to function in the space? Why bother updating the cabinets while leaving an old floor that you hate? Your kitchen will already be a mess, so why not take advantage of it by adding in some of these other important elements.

Flooring – rarely will the footprint be the same when changing the cabinets, so you may need to adjust yours to be complimentary.
Lighting/electrical outlets & switches – I improved my kitchen by adding task lighting, moving a switch and an outlet and adding a dimmer to my main kitchen lights.
Faucet/disposal – I could have reused the not very old designer faucet, but chose to increase the function by replacing it.
Appliances – Consider replacing built-in items like microwaves or dishwashers during your remodel. Ranges and refrigerators are a little easier to do after-the-fact.

As discussed in our Hidden Meanings article, your choices do say a lot about you. But, as a designer, what you don’t see often says even more! Functionality is key, and your kitchen designer will help you discover the best options for your situation. I took kitchen upgrades a step further with my remodel and added even more functionality to my cabinets by utilizing the following:

Roll-outs – what are they? Basically, drawers behind your cabinet doors. You can never have too many drawers, as they add easy access and usability. I love that I have more large drawers than doors now with roll-outs in the pantry.
Small spaces– I added an aftermarket cookware organizer, a tray pull-out and a spice pull-out to increase the functionality of otherwise useless small spaces.
Double trash pull-out – These were incorporated to house both the trash and recycling bins keeping them out of plain site.

It is important to maintain a respectable balance between “neutral” and “personality,” especially if you think you might ever have to sell your home. I chose to keep anything glued down or screwed in on the neutral side (cabinets, tile floor and tile backsplash) and brought in personality through the elements that can be replaced (paint color for the walls, lighting pendants over the island, faucet, and granite counter tops -not easy to replace, but do-able).

It’s worth the effort to put serious consideration into how you use your kitchen and how you’d really like all of the elements to function. A good designer will ask a lot of questions about your dream kitchen. Try to imagine the function beyond the pretty new cabinets. Design with no regrets and you will not only survive your kitchen remodel, but you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!

Make Your Tiny Kitchen Space Appear a Larger Place

Not every home comes complete with a large kitchen, so if you have one, consider yourself lucky. For the rest of you tiny kitchen dwellers, there are ways to make the most of your space during your kitchen remodel.

Maximum Counterspace

Make sure you install your cooktop over your oven and you’ll save a few feet of counterspace. Have your microwave or convection oven built directly into the cabinets, and you’ll score a couple more feet of work-room.

Functional Cabinets

If you’re planning to install some new cabinets, go with a lighter cabinet color paint or wood, as they tend to add brightness to smaller rooms. You can also opt for glass doors for your kitchen cabinet remodel to give an “open” feel. *Note: Only do this if you’re planning to keep your cabinets organized, as this can be a terrible mistake for kitchen accessory hoarders. If you can’t keep tidy, please spare yourself the embarrassment.

The NKBA recommends installing high pantry cabinets, pull-out shelves, tilt-out bins and rotating inserts to make the most of your storage and accessibility. A tilt-out drawer is the perfect place to hide scrapers and sponges. Store toasters and smaller appliances in cabinets (out of eye-sight) to keep the countertops clear of extra clutter. Even small adjustments can make a noticeable difference.

Flowing Floors

Are your kitchen floors different than the floors in the adjoining room? If so, this can make a petite kitchen feel even smaller. When the floor continues into the next room, it can often give the look of a flowing design adding to the illusion of a larger kitchen. Perhaps it’s time to install some wood or bamboo floors in your upcoming remodel.

If there is a way to move your trashcan into the pantry, or incorporate a pull-out cabinet drawer to hold it, this will free up some extra floor space and eliminate an eye-sore.

Let There Be Light

Don’t forget to include sufficient lighting in your new kitchen, as this will obviously add brightness. If you have any way to add natural lighting (skylight, bay window, etc.), that is always an excellent way to add openness, although this may not be an option for everyone. In addition, under cabinet lighting can get rid of the shadows created by upper cabinets, and also add the perfect nighttime atmosphere with just enough lighting.

There are many ways to make your tiny space appear a larger place. Take note of any areas that add to the clutter, and find a solution in your kitchen remodel. There are many options and professionals available to help you make the most of your situation.

If you’re looking to redo your kitchen, I’d be willing to bet you’ve heard of granite. If you haven’t, you may be living under a rock (instead of using it for your kitchen countertop). The use of granite dates back as far as the creation of the ancient egyptian pyramids. The ancient egyptians knew what worked, and so do many of todays homeowners, as granite is one of the most well-liked countertop materials for people buying a new home, or beginning a kitchen renovation project. In case you’re thinking about using granite in your kitchen remodel, here are some fun facts.

Benefits of granite

There’s a reason why so many people long for granite countertops. Besides the fact that it is naturally beautiful and unique (although they may look similar, no two pieces are exactly the same), granite is also extremely durable. You can actually place pots and pans directly on the granite and use it as a cutting board (beware - doing so may dull out your knife). Not only can you choose from a multitude of colors and designs, but also may select from many finish options (high gloss, satin, or flat - to name a few). With granite, maintenance is a breeze and your countertops could potentially last a lifetime.

Where does granite come from?

Granite is an intrusive rock (meaning it was formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the earth’s surface). The magma cools extremely slowly underground, causing it to crystallize as it hardens. The different colors and depths seen in the rock formations are caused by its various mineral compounds, and the colors vary widely depending on location. In order to aqcuire granite for your kitchen countertop, it is mined in large blocks from quarries all over the world.

Varying prices

The varying prices of granite are based on many different factors. Rarity and availability of each particular type of granite influence prices heavily. Labor costs and difficulty of mining can also have an effect. And of course, the cost of shipping will play a part on the overall price-tag as well.

Maintaining your granite countertops

Although it is extremely durable, you’ll need to take regular precautions to maintain your granite. Granite countertops need to be sealed (and re-sealed through the years) because of the porous nature. After they're sealed, granite should be cleaned regularly with mild antibacterial soaps, as many general purpose cleaners can degrade the sealants due to acidity.

Kitchen Makeover Ideas for Homes on the Market

"The kitchen just needs too much work.” – Words you don’t want to hear from potential buyers of your home. We all know that the kitchen is a HUGE selling point for home real estate. Especially in this economy, it is important to make sure yours looks as hassle-free as you can afford to make it.

If you’re trying to sell your home, take a look at your kitchen and be honest…would you want to buy it? If it needs some work, here are some inexpensive ways to give your kitchen a fresh new look before putting your home on the market.

Put on a new face. Reface your cabinets. What you’re going for is the appearance of new cabinets. Often, this look can be achieved with new cabinet doors, or even just a fresh sand and paint job. Just be sure to remove your cabinet hardware so as not to get paint on them.

Get a new “handle” on things. You’d be surprised how big of a difference new hardware can make on the look of your newly painted cabinets. Overall, the cost of some beautiful hardware is a small price to pay to sell your home; and you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg as there are plenty of affordable, yet striking options.

Floor the competition. Yep, you guessed it…If your floor isn’t cutting it, it needs to go. There are plenty of reasonably priced options that will change the overall appearance of your kitchen. If your budget allows, it may be worth it to install some ceramic tile, as it is often a kitchen favorite, but if you can’t afford it, look into laminate, vinyl, linoleum, cork, or even stained concrete as some options. Make sure you choose a color or style that works with the rest of your home and gives a fresh look to your kitchen.

Light up your life. If your lighting fixtures are old, or just plain ugly, you know what you need to do. And if there isn’t enough lighting in your kitchen, that’s something you should fix as well. From track lighting to under-cabinet fixtures, there are many ways to shed a little light in the kitchen.

Paint the town red. Well…maybe you’d better stick with neutral…and it would be less expensive to paint your kitchen instead of the whole town (that would require a lot of paint). A new coat of paint can sometimes make ALL the difference. Your kitchen will look a lot cleaner with a fresh neutral coat. Just be careful not to drip on countertops, cabinets, floors or appliances.

Its time for an upgrade. If your money allows, upgrade your appliances, as they are also a huge selling point. If you can’t afford to upgrade everything, at least make sure the appliances match each other.

Don’t forget to count(er) your blessings. Buyers love a beautiful and functional countertop. Granite, quartz, and Corian are extremely popular and widely accepted. But if you’re not able to afford those options, laminate is now available in so many colors and styles – and there is definitely one that will give your kitchen that "brand new" feel.

Take a look at your current kitchen, and figure out which areas are holding it back. If you can’t decide, call in friends, family or an expert to answer the tough questions – then get to work on your new buyer-friendly home.

Butcher Block and Bamboo, too

We’ve previously mentioned concrete and stainless steel as unique options for your countertop remodel, but if you’d like a “warmer” look to your kitchen, you might opt for one of the following two options:

Butcher Block

For a natural – or perhaps even laid back look, you may find just what you’re looking for in a butcher block countertop. These countertops can be made out of many types of hard wood, and can also be extremely durable. In fact, a major selling point of butcher block countertops is that with the proper wood, you can actually chop your food directly on the countertop without damaging the counter or your knife.

Butcher block countertops are not heat-proof, so you should not place hot pans directly on them (unless you like burn marks on your countertops). However, with the right treatment, they are extremely capable of resisting stains and moisture. If your countertops do end up with scratches, dings, stains or burns, you can simply sand the countertop down and add some oil for conditioning - problem solved.

Bamboo

If you like the look of wood in the kitchen, but prefer to use a more renewable resource, look into bamboo countertops for your kitchen remodel. As we mentioned in a previous post on bamboo floors, bamboo is technically a grass, and therefore it is able to grow significantly faster than wood. The fact that bamboo grows so quickly (we’re talking almost two feet per-day quickly) makes it a highly renewable resource.

Often used in floors, bamboo can also be a beautiful countertop option. Bamboo comes in a variety of color shades - from light to dark - and you can even alternate the colors for a beautiful striped or textured look.
