I came upon this TED Talk earlier today as a result of a person who followed me on Twitter. This talk inspired me today and helped me to realize that my own teaching style is valid. I tend to be self-critical and introspective and while those are good traits I was experiencing some doubt about the overall validity of my approach which is geared more towards social-emotional learning, citizenship and leadership. After viewing this talk and reflecting on what Paul Andersen is saying I’m convinced that my own approach to a more student centered classroom is valid. I hope you enjoy this talk as much as I have today.

“The world bursts at the seams with people ready to tell you you’re not good enough. On occasion, some may be correct. But do not do their work for them. Seek any job; ask anyone out; pursue any goal. Don’t take it personally when they say ‘no’ — they may not be smart enough to say ‘yes.” — Keith Olberman

This quote came my way earlier today through a friend on Instagram which is one of my favorite social networks. It impressed me so much that I shared it with my students and I hope that helped improve their self esteem today. Too many times we send or receive the wrong messages about ourselves and those we come in contact with each day. We all fall short of our ideals, but it’s quotes like that one that bring the importance of a humble belief in our own abilities and worth that can have a transformational effect not only on ourselves but all of those around us. Christians will soon begin the season of Advent. Besides the liturgical meaning of Advent there is the traditional meaning which is the arrival of a notable person or event. I hope that we can all experience an arrival of significance in our own lives and the lives of the people we meet each day.

Take time to tell those around you how much they mean to you. Complement everyone you meet. Go out of your way to be a positive influence in your workplace.

In August I was fortunate to be able to attend a day long seminar sponsored by St. Bonaventure University and led by Dr. Charles Walker. I cannot remember the title but the theme was about the impact and implications of positive psychology in the classroom. The majority of the participants were from area K-12 schools. The following exercise is taken from Dr. Walker’s materials. I’ve been trying to add more of these materials and concepts to my own teaching. Have any of you considered doing the same?

Joy: When have you felt utterly glad and elated about? When has your joy and happiness naturally led to wonderful creative playfulness.

Gratitude: Who fully deserves to be thanked by you? What “gifts” of yours are you most appreciative of? What has happened to you that you are most grateful for?

Serenity: What has been your source of solace, the person or place you confidently turn to for relaxation, peace and serenity?

Interest: What or who has been most responsible for making you feel alert, alive and curious? What or who has opened eyes to new discoveries and increased your thirst for learning?

Hope: What about your experience has increased your sense of hope and optimism? What or who replaced your worries with exciting realistic possibilities for the future?

Pride: When and what have you done that is praiseworthy? What accomplishments and achievements have authentically given you reason to be proud of yourself?

Humor: What or who makes you laugh? When do you enjoy playful banter and simple amusement with others? When does humor give you comic insight on the world around you?

Inspiration: When has your spirit been elevated by the goodness and excellence you have witnessed in others? Who has inspired you? What has stirred you?

Awe: Have you encountered truly beautiful things in your life? Has art or the natural environment aroused a sense of awe and wonderment in you? Has anything overwhelmed you with its grandeur?

Love: Have your experiences in life helped you to find and deepen warm, trusting, comfortable loving relationships with others? Have you found a person who amplifies all the other positive emotions of joy, gratitude, serenity, interest, hope, pride, humor, inspiration and awe? Have you built a relationship of mutual respect? Do you cherish someone and are you cherished?

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how my lack of public reflection on this blog has been hindering my best efforts to get some feedback on my thinking. Last week I spent several days at the NYSCATE Annual Conference at the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester, New York. I had the privilege of presenting on my experiences with digital publishing and then the co-equal privilege of listening to a number of great presentations on a variety of topics including educational technology leadership.

While it is tempting to see educational technology as a panacea for our troubled educational system. If we just had another tablet, laptop or interactive whiteboard we’d provide the kind of school environment which will adequately prepare our students for the 21st century. Teaching children how to think is the imperative that we need. None of us will ever be able to approximate what the future holds. We need classrooms where creativity and collaboration are celebrated. We need learning spaces where children are not taught the correct answer but instead invited to experiment and make mistakes.

Children are curious by nature. Let’s celebrate that! Let’s encourage that! I plan on being more active here and I hope that what I blog about will create some discussion or thought and will encourage you to invite your students to think and to reflect on what they are thinking.

Today is a day of reflection following a week of learning and resting. I’m at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse Chapel in Allegany, New York. I share this holy spot today with the ladies who formed me in my youth. Sr. Rita Michael Aguillard, OSF sits ahead of me. There is a slight aroma of incense here as we sit in Eucharistic adoration. It’s quiet here and healing in this presence. I’ve come to listen for that voice that does not speak. What is the next step on the journey? What will fulfill the longing of my soul?

Last night I had the distinct privilege of readin Seth Godin’s, “Stop Stealing Dreams.” It’s a free book that came my way from a Twitter posting from one of the many tweeps I follow. I downloaded the book from the website and three hours later I finished it. I simply could not “put it down.” I recommend it to anyone who’s involved in education whether parent, teacher, administrator or student. I highlighted many lines and paragraphs and I intend to discuss it further with anyone I can engage with. The following quote from p. 18 of the text is typical.

Changing school doesn’t involve sharpening the pencil we’ve already got. School reform cannot succeed if it focuses on getting schools to do a better job of what we previously asked them to do. We don’t need more of what schools produce when they’re working as designed. The challenge, then, is to change the very output of the school before we start spending even more time and money improving the performance of the school.

It’s a great read and a challenge to examine what we’re doing or not doing in American education today.

Happy Birthday, Mom!
Today we celebrate the 86th anniversary of your birth ( a couple of days early on the Feast of All Souls.) We’re happy that you are Mom, Mother-in-Law, Grandma and a friend to all you come in contact with. You are a saintly and beautiful person who has hardly ever uttered an unkind or mean word toward anyone and especially toward people who have deserved to be scolded.
You have been a power of example to all of us. Life has not always been kind to you. Born in 1926, you were only four years old when you lost your Dad to a tragic early death. You, Grandma Hand and Uncle John weathered that storm. You grew up in a loving home but quarters must have been tight with Mae, Bill, Billy, Joan, Grandma Hand, John and you
all sharing the same home. Throughout it all you excelled both as a person and in your professional undertakings beginning with your elementary years, high school years and eventually a scholarship to D’Youville College.
I’ve often thought how amazing and scary it must have been to emigrate from Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City to Buffalo, New York. You were an 8 hour train ride from home and once again you showed your strength of spirit and resilience as you came saw and conquered as it were as a student at D’Youville College eventually graduating in 1947 with B.A. in Mathematics and Magna Cum Laude at that. Then on to Fordham and a Masters Degree in Mathematics at a time when few women were pursuing such degrees and careers.
You didn’t stop there, you came back to Buffalo to teach at D’Youville and eventually meet Dad who must have been a wild a wooly guy if he was anything like I remember. You gave up your own career as a teacher to support him in his general dentistry practice. Then when times were tough in 1970 brought on by a sickly husband you returned to teaching at a time when there were few of the perks that we appreciate today. Once again your resilience and good attitude carried the day. You became a widow at 46 and proceeded to face that situation with the same fortitude and resilience with which you met all the other situations. You provided a home and a damned nice one at that for Mark, Kathy and I on an $8,600 year teaching salary. You provided us with the bedrock and upbringing that we needed and always in a loving manner that none of us could ever duplicate.
Then in 1980 you became not only our Mom but also Mom to the Luscher family and Grandma to all of the Luscher-Watkins family. You have treated everyone with equanimity regardless of the situation. You have been a leader and a power of example to all of us. You have been a quiet champion of women’s rights and a power of example of how a single parent can lead a family and under the most adverse circumstances. You have been our rock, our fortress and our deliverer and our stronghold in times both good and bad.
I know I speak for all of us present tonight that we wish you the happiest birthday and the best in the year ahead. — Love, Don

It’s been a long time since I wrote anything here and I’ve even thought that maybe I’d just scrap the whole blog idea. It’s presumptive in some ways for me to think that anyone really cares what I’m thinking or that my thoughts might have any relevance to anyone else. This is a time of unprecedented change in education and particularly public education in the United States of America. For the first time in our history we have a national set of standards that nearly every state has agreed to and most schools are trying to make sense of them. Gone are the days of local autonomy and local curricula. They are being replaced by national standards that are agreed upon by policy makers in Washington and in state houses around the country. There are some who are for such change and others who rail against it. I don’t find myself at home in either camp but prefer instead a neutral ground that is non-dualistic. I’m tired of the either/or thinking that has permeated local, regional and national politics for over a decade and now that same discourse threatens education.

I’m tired too of the thinking or lack of thinking that is naive enough to believe that somehow or other technology is going to educate everyone. It’s very human to clamor after messianic figures or movements that promise something for nothing or in this case something for a tablet, pad or other electronic device. I’m a gadgeteer myself. I’m enthralled with the many devices that have proliferated the marketplace. However, I began my education in a parochial school where we had few of the accessories that our peers in the public school did. Nonetheless those of us who graduated from St. Pius X School frequently found ourselves at the tops of our classes once we transferred to the public high school because we had learned to read, write and think so well courtesy of some great teachers who transformed us into learners eager for whatever lay over the educational horizon.
