Who decides - the reader or the observer? In this webinar, participants will examine definitions and societal beliefs about reading, literacy, and literary formats. In the educational sector, it has long been agreed that varying learning styles exist, and yet, "alternative" formats such as audio books and graphic novels continue to be dismissed and not considered "reading."

Participants will explore these issues and learn ways to redefine, reach, and "turn into readers" even the most reluctant patrons and students in their libraries and schools. Common pitfalls will be replaced with immediately implementable marketing, collection development, reader’s advisory, and programming ideas for tweens and teens (as well as adults) previously labeled as "non-readers."

Who should participate: For all BC library employees, including front-line staff who work with children and youth and BC teacher-librarians. Please indicate your library or school name in the registration form. The workshop is also open to library students and library workers not currently employed.

Instructor Bio:

Jenine began her work with youth and communities when she was, herself, a pre-teen (now termed "tween"). After earning her MLIS in 2005, she soon began presenting at ALA Annual and regional Library Association conferences, serving on YALSA's Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers Committee, and teaching eCourses for YALSA on "Boys and Books: Encouraging Early Teen and Tween Boys to Read."

Soon, Jenine became nationally recognized for her work with teens in libraries and participated in the ALA's Emerging Leaders Institute as a YALSA Sponsored Candidate as well as receiving VOYA's Most Valuable Teen Program Award, 2007 for the Teen Alternative Fashion Show.

Jenine has been a guest faculty for her alma mater at the University of Washington Information School, teaching courses in public library services for youth as well as storytelling. She's also the editor of the book Cool Teen Programs for Under $100.

For more information on Jenine Lilian, see: www.jeninelillian.com

Prices:

This workshop is sponsored and facilitated by the IslandLink Library Federation, the Kootenay Library Federation, and the British Columbia Library Association. As such, it is free for all BC library and school library employees, as well as library students and library workers not currently employed, but you must register! Please indicate your library or school name if applicable in the registration form.

Please register by noon on Thursday, November 10 to ensure that you have time to test the technical specifications before the event. In 2010, more than 2 million new patent applications were filed worldwide. The patent literature is interdisciplinary and international, encompassing innovations in every field of technology during the last two hundred years. Patents reveal the current state-of-the-art and provide vital information for making informed decisions about new research projects and business opportunities. This workshop will introduce you to the many types of patent documents and patent search tools.

Workshop Goals:

You will learn how to:

Navigate patent documents and data;

Select the best patent database for your information needs;

Search by inventor, company and legal representative;

Search by IPC and US patent classification;

Retrieve patent family and legal status information; and

Analyze patent data using free visualization tools and statistical reports.

Instructor Bio: Michael White is the librarian for research services in the Engineering & Science Library at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
