I think out of all of my weeks unemployed, last week was the worst. For starters, I was supposed to move in with a friend and we had everything planned out and at the last minute she changed her mind and has decided to get rid of her apartment. I didn't realize this at the time, but she was expecting to find a job quickly, and she was factoring that into our plan without telling me. Unfortunately in this economy, even the most talented people are finding themselves unemployed for up to 8 months. I'm a different kind of planner. I only work with facts, not what I think might happen. So Plan B is in effect. I'm trying to find a new place to live. I think there are prospects. Luckily I do have a great boyfriend that I could stay with for a few weeks. I definitely don't want to move in with him. I do take that step very seriously and we are definitely too green in this relationship to do anything of the sort.
So, that was the first blow. The second blow was I had a job interview that was completely disastrous. I'm serious. It was the worst interview of my life. It was for an Office Manager position but the guys interviewing me only wanted to hear stories about theater and I tried so hard to steer it back to Office Management and to connect the skills involved but after a point it was like a horrible out of body experience where I was just watching myself babble. It was not me. I don't talk like that but I did.
So needless to say I knew I was not getting that job. I also had an interview for a merchandising company for the same position and I have to say I rocked that interview. The owner was in love with me, I was able to relate my previous experience to what their industry was, I was excited about what they do, and I really fit in there. So after waiting four days, the owner finally called me to say that she was very close to hiring me and really enjoyed me and thought I was fabulous but someone interviewed at the last minute that had previous industry experience. She didn't sound like she entirely liked the person she hired as much as me but the other person had more experience.
So, three big letdowns last week. So now on top of finding a job, I'm also finding a place to live. I'm guessing this week will be better. I have an interview with a film production company and I've gotten a couple of responses for apartments. I'm feeling a little bit better. I'm also going to Sketch Tuesday tomorrow night. I also have another event to go to. I can't remember the name for it. Some movie promotion.
That's about it. Working hard to stay afloat. :)

Couch to 5K

So I am not a jogger in any way, shape, or form. I wouldn't even call myself athletic and outdoorsy, especially compared to my boyfriend. I will join the gym and work out for a few weeks, get tired of it because it's too inconvenient and doesn't fit into my schedule, or I get bored with what I'm doing and get frustrated at the lack of results. Mostly it's a matter of convenience. I took up swimming for awhile and really enjoyed it but it was 40 minutes to get to the pool and 40 minutes to get back. Once I have everything in order with my scooter then I won't have to worry with public transportation and I can take it up again.

So my best friend told me about Couch to 5k and I decided to start doing it with him. I have to say I love it. He ran with me the first few weeks and really made me stick with it. I really owe him a lot for that. I was not the easiest person to motivate. Every time I wanted to stop he made me start again and kept me moving. I can't believe I thought the first week was hard compared to what I'm doing now. The first week is a 5 minute walking warm up, run a minute and walk 90 seconds for 8 intervals and then cool down walk for 5 minutes. That first week was hard too. I was huffing and puffing near the end of the run. Now I'm in week four where I warm up for 5 minutes, jog for 3, walk for 90 seconds, jog for 5 minutes, walk for 2 1/2 minutes, jog for 3 minutes, walk for 90 seconds, jog for 5 and then walk for 5 minutes. I honestly did not think I would make it so far and I feel amazing.

My jogging is not perfect yet. I haven't been able to do the entire jog this week. Monday my shins started to hurt and I walked most of the last 5 minutes. Tuesday my calves started to hurt and I walked for 30-60 seconds (but that was after I really pushed through the pain for awhile). I'm not jogging today. I'm going to jog tomorrow and hopefully I will be able to do the whole thing. Saturday I will either stick with this week or move ahead to the next week.

I think part of the reason I like it so much is the goals are attainable. You are going to be pushing yourself more and more each week but it's not something you can't do so there is less chance of getting frustrated and giving up. Plus, I've been feeling the change. I feel great after jogging and that feeling sticks with me for about 24 hours. I'm a lot more productive after I've been jogging. I also sleep better and drink more water. I haven't lost a lot of weight yet because of it. I've lost around 5 lbs but I think some of that has to do with losing some water weight. I also have a sense of accomplishment. My best friend and I haven't been jogging together as much this past week because of our busy schedules but we do still talk about our jogs and our eating habits. My eating habits need some work. During the week I don't eat too badly. I do most of my bad eating on the weekends with my boyfriend.

Since I haven't had my best friend jogging with me the past 3 weeks all the time I've been using podcasts to help me with my jogs. I've been listening to the Chubby Jones Podcast and Podrunner Intervals. Both are pretty great and I like to switch between them. Week 2 of Chubby Jones has been my favorite. She finds some pretty good music in the open market and will talk to you some during the run. She'll give you a countdown of how far you've gone, how long you have left and a few words of inspiration. Podrunner talks to you for a second at the beginning with an introduction and then moves on to playing techno music. Instead of giving you countdowns and telling you to walk and run they just have a bell that comes on. I like the music but I do miss the countdown that Chubby Jones gives you.

I definitely think this is a good program for people to try. And you don't have to stick with the weeks as they are. If you want to repeat a week, go ahead and do it. This is your training regime. Having my best friend has been a huge help. That's what best friends are for. :)

Weekend

Another lovely weekend. Boyfriend and I had a nice dinner date Friday night at Blowfish Sushi down in the Mission. Wonderful sushi but I don't think we'll go back again on a Friday night. I made a joke about how green tea smells like corn nuts and that's all boyfriend associates green tea with now.

Had a nice lazy Saturday and then Saturday night we went to my former roommates birthday party. Super awesome fun time. Seriously great party. They had open bar, the Epenada Lady, the Taco Truck, some guy frying stuff, and a photo booth. They also had a great band called My Last Earthquake that absolutely rocked my world. Boyfriend and I didn't stay too late. He had to get up early to catch the ski bus.

Today I had lunch with my best friend and enjoyed Dolores Park. I need to go again tomorrow and work on my tan. I got a horrific burn last weekend at Sea Otter and the swim meet and now I need to even it out.

Just saw the movie Kick-Ass tonight. It was eh. I didn't hate it but I didn't really draw me in either. The premise was good. The plot was a bit cliche and predictable. Even the acting was mediocre. I didn't feel connected to the characters or what was happening to them. There were a few funny bits. What was awesome about this movie was Chloe Moretz. She's like this little 13 yr old Jackie Chan. While the movie itself wasn't that great, it was a good vehicle for her to show off that she has the makings of a future action star. I'm pretty sure that a lot was done by a stunt double but she got some good moves in there too. If I were a casting agent in Hollywood I would keep my eye on her. I think she has some great potential.
You don't have a job which means you have nothing to do all day. You don't have an income which means you can't go out and do anything during the day. Plus you spend your days trying to get people to notice you and in return feel invisible or rejected.

So in order to combat some of this I have taken to spending a portion of my day signing up for free samples and sweepstakes. Yes, I understand the stigma that goes along with this. The majority of the websites I go to are marketed towards homemakers. Honestly, I would not mind being a homemaker. That is part of what I'm doing now. I clean our house, do my laundry, walk the dog, go grocery shopping. So I don't mind being a part of this. I still need a job and I still apply for every single one that I can get my hands on and network to every single person I meet.

Well, my free samples and sweepstakes entries have been paying off. Yesterday I got in the mail a huge sample pack of Nescafe Taster's Choice Instant Coffee. It came with individual packets of Original Gourmet, Gourmet Roast, 100% Columbian, Decaf, Hazelnut and Vanilla.

First, props on a great sample pack. It think it gives me a great variety to try all of them or if I only like a particular type of coffee , it is guaranteed to be in there. Plus, it makes them look good. They aren't being stingy. I also like the slim packaging. It's something I can easily slip into one of the pencil holders in my messenger bag or a small pocket in my purse. If I had a job I would probably keep a bunch of them in my pencil cup on my desk. I like to have my coffee within arms reach.

Now the actual coffee. I'm trying the Original Gourmet at the moment. Each individual packet is meant to be mixed with 6 oz of hot water. I will say I wish each packet was made for 12 oz of water. That's closer to an actual cup of coffee. But then the 6 oz might be more ideal for people who like to drink coffee out of their Grandmother's china. I like a big hearty mug of coffee.

The taste is really good. I've found in the past with instant coffee that there is a fake bitter taste that goes along with it. In fact I just made a cup of some instant coffee I had in my cabinet that I use for cooking and yes, it's still pretty disgusting. So I do like the taste. It's also not too watered down. There is a good taste there. I don't think I would be able to taste the different between this and my regular coffee I drink at home.

So final word. The taste is good, the packaging is good, I just want more of it.

Because I care

Here are some free deals for everyone for tomorrow, April 15th.

As a person who would like to adopt children one day I am so disturbed by this story. Caring for a child that has been adopted is hard. I'm not denying that. And I am sure plenty of people have found themselves in situations where they did not have the skills, patience and money to care for a child that has more problems than they anticipated. It is very sad that this woman was not fully aware of what she was getting into. I wanted to adopt a dog once and spent a month visiting the dog and playing with it to make sure the dog and I were a good match. The same is with adopted children. Not every family is going to be right for every child. While I have not gone through the adoption process, I certainly hope it entails more that just picking one out from a line-up of pictures.

So, after going through the process, the mother realizes that it is not the best situation for her and her family. This little boy does sound extremely disturbed. Russian Children's Rights Commissioner Pavel Astakhov said the child was "completely healthy, physically and mentally" before the adoption. I have a hard time believing that. He has a history of pyromania. I have been reading about children adopted from Russia and a lot suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome (his birth mother was an alcoholic) and the lack of mental stimulation found in orphanages during vital developmental. It sounds like he was coming from a very sad situation and his way of handling it was to set fires. I don't know if I would be equipped to handle the situation. If I found myself in a situation like this and I couldn't handle it, then I would contact people for help. I would contact a doctor, the adoption agency, DSS and psychiatrists. I wouldn't just put him on a plane with some crayons and a note saying "I don't want to mother this child anymore." What if something happened to that child on the trip? What if that child did something to other people on the trip? What if he was lost? She didn't actually contact anyone in Russia saying he was coming back so if he went missing then no one would know. It is completely irresponsible negligence and shows how insensitive of a person this woman is. He is not a sweater you can take back to a store. He is a human being and should be treated as thus. From what I've read the only person she did contact before sending him on a plane was a lawyer she found on the Internet. Seriously!!! This is the advice a lawyer gave her. I can't wait to hear a statement from them feebly trying to justify why that was their best solution. Sheriff Randall Boyce of Bedford County stated that he wasn't sure if there was a crime committed. I pretty certain there was. We have an international relations nightmare going on because some dumbass didn't want to properly handle a situation. The adoption agency she used that is based in Seattle, WA has already stated that no one contacted them about the problems she was having.

WOOT!

WOOT! I am unemployed and now the real work begins. I've been job hunting since before Christmas. I spend a few hours every day working on it. Tomorrow I need to work on getting unemployment, food stamps, cash aid and anything else I might be able to qualify for. I'm also going to take advantage of this time to work out more and intern with my roommate and learn more about her job. Just for my sanity. I did have an interview on Friday that lasted for a long time and I'm really hoping he makes an offer to me tomorrow. That would just be amazing. I'm not too terribly worried yet. I did get to spend time with friends this weekend and got plenty of pity beers.
Guy is going great. He's been opening up a lot more and he seems to include me in places of his life that I didn't expect. Nothing major, just little things. Like for example he went skiing and he IMed me to let me know he was on the road. He didn't need to do this. I'm not going to see him tonight but he let me know anyways. It feels good to think that he might want me to be a part of his life.
I'm also really happy because I'm completely over my ex. My ex is also my best friend and I love the fact that I've moved on. The new guy has helped a lot with this but also just the time factor and adapting to our new relationship. So I still get to keep my best friend. And I'm totally falling for the new guy.

Hair Color

I think I want to dye my hair red. I created a zoo of moving animals, titles and now I'm working on a bouncing ball. None of it is brilliant but it does add Photoshop and Flash CS4 to my resume. I'm going to make up some print ads too just to add to my portfolio. Flash CS4 is super easy once you figure out how to do everything. The book I have helps a lot too. I'm reading that and searching the internet for tutorials. The book is a great guide for giving me a good direction to go in my searching for information. I don't think I can add my videos here but we'll see. I definitely need to make better animations. Right now they are choppy. :)

Guy is good. I do wonder about a couple of things. He's really good looking and really nice but tends to be really quiet and stoic. Its very confusing but I'm going to see what happens. It went well. It was with a temp agency. I've never worked with a temp agency before but I have previously applied to them. My previous experience was off putting. I would not hear from them or they would look at my resume and laugh saying they only hire high level executives. Well, this one I went to was through a referral. I think that helped. It seemed like everyone else interviewing was through a referral too. Luckily I took some materials with me to support my computer skills and they seemed positive about finding me a job.
Here is where it gets scary. When the time comes are they going to submit me for jobs. What if they pretended to like me but not so much. I guess I have to just wait and see.

I also have a meeting about a school tour on Friday. I hope that works out. Mostly I need them to pay some decent money if I'm going to commute so far.

I hate my job.

:( Everything is so up in the air right now. Communication does not even happen at my current job. There is absolutely no team spirit, and everyone is doing projects without actually informing anyone else. I need a new job now. I need to get out of there. I had an interview last week and while they enjoyed talking to me and my personality they said I was not the right fit. I have another interview on Tuesday with a Temp Agency. That will hopefully lead to something. I just wish it would all hurry up and work out already.

Things are getting more serious with the guy I'm dating. We spent the whole weekend together. It was a lot of fun and we had a great time but there are still concerns I have. He used to be engaged. He's not anymore but he hasn't quite moved on. I just don't know how long ago they broke up and really where he's at in all of this. I just wish I knew how long ago they broke up. Not that it will answer anything.
SimplyHired.com- eh. It's ok. Less bullshit that Monster.com and HotJob.com but still needs some digging.
Monster.com- Hate,hate,hate!
Craigslist- I've found jobs through them so I would say I've had decent luck.
TCG.org-The ultimate place for theater jobs.
CyberCoders-Just submitted to them. We'll see.
K2 Partnering Associates-A friend used to work for them and I keep checking the out. Nothing yet.
SanFranJobs.com-great site if you live in the Bay Area.
FlipDog.com-it reminds me of the joke "I smell supdog." "What's supdog?" "Nothing. What's up with you."
Doostang- seems pretty cool so far
This might only last for 3 days but for right now it will make me feel better. This past week has been pretty shitty. 3 days for Christmas and I find out my job is being downsized and I shouldn't depend on it getting better so once again I'm looking for a job. I'm extremely frustrated because I really did put my heart and soul in this job. I worked long hours, sometimes not always getting paid for it, covered for people who were not doing their job and generally have the attitude of no job is too dirty for me to do. One of the guys I work with, a city employee, his job is completely safe even though he didn't show up to work for weeks on end and then lied on his timecard. My boss did not dispute it. This asshole disappears for 3 weeks straight(a multiple other weeks since I've worked there), no phone calls or emails, no instruction whatsoever to the people he manages, still puts on his time card that he work 40 hrs a week for 3 weeks and even though my boss knows he's lying, he's still paying him but I get laid off. Fuck having a work ethic. It's really hard for me to not be bitter right now. It's also hard for me not to be scared to death.
I'm trying to figure out my options. I can keep working in theater. If that's the only job I get, I'll do it. I want to get out of theater and move into something more steady. I've applied for a few production jobs with film and animation studios. I've also been looking into what it would take for me to go into Community Management. If I could get either of those it would be awesome but if not, I would like to be an office manager so I can figure myself out.

I've been looking on Craigslist, LinkedIn, and Startuply.com. I've also been researching different companies and going directly to their websites and looking for jobs I might fit. I've checked out Monster and HotJobs but I get frustrated by the number of companies that are just doing a general cattle call or have some sort of scam going. SimplyHired seems good too. Its easy to use.

Everything else in my life is ok. I still have an active social and dating life. I made out with a guy that I really like and I'm hoping that can turn into something more. I have another guy I need to break up with. After 2 dates he's already calling me his girlfriend and bought me towels. Too much ,too fast. I'm not really connecting with the guy too. I like the first guy that I've been hanging out with but I'm being careful with that one too. Guy #1 is awesome on so many different levels.

I guess I just have to wait and see where things go and stop being so bitter. I feel better now after writing this so you might see a lot of me.

Confidence

You know the saying "When it rains ,it pours." After a month long dry spell I have had the following:
-great sex with an old friend
-hit on at a bar by a good looking guy when I was hanging out with one of my better looking friends (the guy isn't a douche either.)
-scheduled a date with an old high school friend

I think part of the reason this happens is because once a good thing happens your confidence is soaring. I know mine is. Well, the sex was just a great tension reliever that was overdue but it was much better than I thought it would be. Definately excited about the next hook up. Also interested to see what the guy at the bar is like when he is not drinking. But I'm feeling newly inspired to take more risks.

It was a pretty awesome weekend with great music and a great Goulet themed party.

Pumpkin Ravioli (My way)

Here is the recipe for my pumpkin ravioli. It is delicious, looks very fancy and can be made for under $20.

Pumpkin Ravioli

Pumpkin Filling-

10 tablespoons (5 ounces) unsalted butter
1 can of pureed pumpkin (just straight up, pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie)
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 bay leaf (I left this out. If you have a friend you can get 1/2 a bay leaf from, go for it but I wasn't about to buy a whole thing of bay leaves to use half of one. I don't ever use them.)
2 tablespoons minced fresh sage, plus 6 small leaves for garnish
2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme leaves
2 eggs, beaten
Salt
Freshly ground white pepper

Wonton Wrappers (to make the raviolis)

Sauce-

2 cups Chicken Stock

What you are going to do is put 4 tbs of butter in a saucepan and melt it down. Then add the pumpkin puree, 1 cup of cream, half of your herbs and simmer for one hour until it forms a paste. This is going to require constant stirring. It sucks. I know but it keeps it from burning on the bottom. But you want to cook it down to a paste. Once it is a paste then add 2 tbsp more of butter, the eggs and season with salt and pepper. I let mine cool over night.

Next get your wonton wrappers (I used 3 packages), a flat surface, a bowl of water, a storage container, your pumpkin puree and a good movie. Your going to take your wonton wrapper, brush it with water, place a small amount of pumkin in the middle, cover with another wonton wrapper and pressed around the edges to seal it. There are different ways to give your ravioli a fancy edge. I just pressed a fork around the edges. Place your ravioli into the storge container. I would place a piece of wax paper in between each layer. It keeps them from sticking together when it comes time to cook them. You just boil them like normal ravioli. I would add some oil to the water to keep them from sticking together.

The final step is to make the sauce. This is super simple. Reduce 2 cups of chicken stock down to half a cup. Add a cup of heavy cream and reduce the mixture down to 3/4 cup. Finally add 4 tbsp butter and the rest of th herbs and you have your fancy sauce.

Super cheap, somewhat time consuming but you are going to impress your guests.

Dating

As if dating is not bad enough, now Match.com has started a new application where it will give you 5 matches a day. Not fully understanding what this was I decided to try it. So it gives you five guys and you get to say whether you are interested or not. Ok, that seems easy enough. So I said I was interested in three of the five guys. Great. Well, not so great. Match.com then tells these guys I'm interested and then they in turn get to say whether or not they are interested. If they are not interested I get an email in my inbox saying "Don't give up hope. The right person is out there somewhere for you." and then informs me that this particular person is not interested in me. I would prefer a brush off in a bar any day over this, which leads me into my topic for this evening. The ways people tell someone they are just not interested.

Do you remember the episode of "Sex and the City" when Burger broke up with Carrie on a post it? Or when Jessica Simpson broke up with a guy through email? My favorite was when Matt Damon broke up with Minnie Driver during The Oprah Winfrey Show. Unfortunately nobody wants to be straight forward. People want to take the "easy" way out. I dated a guy a few months back. Originally it was supposed to be a quick summer hook up. This was my intention until circumstances changed and suddenly I was faced with the opportunity of getting to really know this person. I wasn't really all that into him but I didn't want to just brush him off without giving him a fair shot so we pursued dating. It was failed from the beginning. While we hung out a lot when it was just a summer hook-up once it went to the next level we barely saw each other. So after a month we just stopped calling each other. I was actually a little bit hurt that we didn't talk about the situation because I would have liked to have remained friends with him. But instead we took the easy way out.

I am guilty of the diversion brush off. I try as hard as possible to shove them into the friend zone. Or I try to set them up with one of my friends. Really anything shiny I can find to wave in front of their face while I get away. I had one guy that I went on a date with who got drunk and stoned before the date and spent the entire date sloppily trying to sleep with me. My way of saying I was not interested was using the excuse I was tired and had a long day and then never called him again. I also knew a guy one time that I liked as a friend and really did not want to hurt his feelings but I was not interested so instead I always made sure I was with a group around him. If we hung out, it was with a group and if he wanted to grab dinner, I always had plans. It was not the most mature way to handle it but at the time it was the best I was capable of. I remember back in college I knew a guy who would start dating a girl and when it got too serious he would just move. Moving was easier for him than just saying "This is not working for me." I guess that is kind of like the runaway bride who claimed she was kidnapped and raped all to get out of getting married. Lying to the country was easier than breaking up with her fiance.

I had another situation recently where I went on a match.com date with a British boy. We went to a bar and started drinking. Honestly, I'm not a big drinker. I think once I have a steady job again I will probably drink more but right now it is considered a luxury. So wee little me who is not a big drinker decided to go beer for beer with the British boy. Everything was great on the date. We had a wonderful time. Lots of laughter, lots of drinking. As much as I hate to say it I got trashed. So the last hour of the date I was pretty drunk and honestly have no idea what I must have looked like. So we ended the date and I stumbled back home to Noe Valley from the Mission. I fell down at least 30 times, and the homeless man on the street was concerned about me getting home safely but I did get a free slice of pizza from my favorite pizza place. So the next day I told all of my girlfriends about how embarrassed I was at my behavior. Seriously, I was DRUNK. They assured me it was okay but I didn't think I would ever hear from this guy again. I did send a courtesy text to say that I had a good time but I really did not expect a response. Then a week later he texted me. We texted back and forth a couple of times. Nothing important was said. It was minor texting chit chat but he did text me so I thought maybe there was a shot to redeem myself. So I sent a friendly email saying if he wanted to go out again I would be up for it. Then nothing. I would have preferred nothing from the beginning. If you are not interested don't text me. I had already moved on to my next dating victim.

The best break up of all time for me was back in high school. I had been dating this guy for awhile when all of a sudden he told me one day that he had a very important secret he wanted to share with me. He told me all about how he was a trained assassin for the mafia and his job was to guard the mob boss's daughter. Unfortunately a year ago he had performed a hit and thought he had killed the guy but apparently had not and now the mafia wanted their money back. So we had to break up because in order to protect himself from the mafia he had to go to New Orleans and kill the mob boss himself and he might not come back. I didn't buy his story but if you're going to break up with me at least make it good.
