When was born, I had this sense over and over again that she was my tiny zen master, here to teach me lessons. Well, I'm preparing for another one of those lessons today.... I will not be attached to the outcome of our shoe shopping trip today. It does not matter if she tries on 80 pairs of shoes and doesn't like any of them. It does not matter if she says the shoes are simultaneously "too big" and "pinchy". It does not matter if the shoes are super freaking adorable but she doesn't like them. It does not matter if the only shoes she ends up liking are the exact same size as the ones she says are getting too small. I am sending loving kindness towards myself and my daughter's ridiculous preconceived notions about shoes and feet. Om shanti. from Facebook

My mom got Devyn the first three "Magic Treehouse" books. We read the first two in Dallas. Now we're on "Mummies in the Morning," and I just spent almost half an hour trying to explain a) what a ghost is, b) how the queen could be a ghost and dead mummy bones at the same time and c) how they get the wrappings to stay on a mummy. Oy vey.

Devyn is singing, "Hey! You! Get offa my cloud!" at the top of her lungs. Parenting WIN.

Brandon and Devyn are having an argument about whether or not fairies (as in, tiny creatures with wings) can marry outside their species that currently has Devyn in tears.

Me: *hissing at Brandon* It's easier just to agree!
Him: I don't want her to be a racist!

Devyn is lecturing Brandon that he needs to eat more healthy foods, like broccoli, if he wants to still be alive when she's eight.

Which is, like, REALLY old to a four year old.

Devyn’s been asking to try mussels for WEEKS, so we let her order them for dinner last night at Village Tavern (much to the amusement of the waiter). She LOVED them.

We spent one of our Ouray vacation days in Telluride (about an hour away). We were welcomed into town by a HUGE herd of elk with lots of babies!

Our vacation in Ouray was a great experience! Our first stop was at the box canyon falls. The water rushes through a narrow box canyon, and you can visit and view via a catwalk!

How would you like to live there??

After Box Canyon Falls, we went to Cascade Falls. Brandon and I hiked the short distance to the pool.

First day of school pics! (Ignore the gang signs.) ;)

After taking some pics, we went to pick up Aunt Wendy, who had to drop her car off at the repair shop, and then the three of us got breakfast at Great Scot's diner before heading to school. So fun that Aunt Wendy could be there for the first day! She gave Dev a special heart sticker for her first day (she's holding it in the third pic).

Thanks for letting us have such a fun day. It doesn't seem like she

remembers the porcini you found when she was two. You never know,
right?

We were actually wandering around in the woods today, so I asked her
over and over again to point back to where the trail was. We talked
about how to keep track by the sun. At first, she was getting it all
wrong, but by the end, she was pretty consistently correct. The reason
I'm good at it is that I started learning when I was her age. I also
got to explain the finer points of how to poop in the forest. The
Crazy Aunt, at your service.

Playing Hooky At the Zoo

Friday was relatively cool (only in the 70s!) so we took advantage and went to the zoo — and Daddy took the morning off and came with us!

Devyn said she wanted to start with the giraffes — but the line for the new attraction to feed them was so long, we decided not to waste our morning waiting for them.

One of my favorite things to do at the Denver zoo is feed the lorikeets. They're so cute!

We had a picnic lunch (pretty good barbeque from a zoo restaurant!) and then Daddy had to go to work. After we said goodbye to him, Devyn and I took a spin on the carousel.

We checked out a few more animals, played in the play area, and then, literally as we were walking to the exit, we saw they were feeding the giraffes again — and there was almost no line.

Excellent.

Devyn had a princess party.

Yes! A dandy whoop-de-doo!

And to make it extra special

Devyn wants to invite you!

First the princesses decorated wands and crowns at the Bippety Boppety Boo wand shop.

Then the princesses got all dressed up at Belle's Beauty Parlor, Ariel's Treasure Chest, and Aurora's Dress Shop.

We had all kinds of princess food, and the princesses played and ate a picnic outside in the yard.

Then we had cupcakes! (I was pretty darn proud of the way the princess dress pull-apart cake came out!)

I think everyone had a great time, especially ~~Princess~~ er, QUEEN Devyn!
