Comic Art Reference – Faces in Perspective

Drawing faces in perspective can be a challenge. Here is a great perspective sheet I found by Alfonso José Elola a concept artist and illustrator from Madrid, Spain. What he’s done is drawn a single face in front view to the right and left 3/4 view. He’s also drawn the head from a top view to a bottom view. Using comic book terms from bird’s eye view to worms eyes view. There is a box encasing the head to help us better understand how perspective comes into play when drawing the head from these different angles.

Comic Art Terms – Ligne Claire

Ligne claire is a style of drawing pioneered by Hergé, the Belgian creator of The Adventures of Tintin. The term is French for a clear line. It uses clear strong lines all of the same width and no hatching, while contrast is downplayed as well. Cast shadows are often illuminate.

Additionally, the style often features strong colors and a combination of cartoonist characters against a realistic background. All these elements together can result in giving strips drawn this way a flat aspect. Other characteristics usually include the clarity and easy readability of the panel compositions, and a relatively uniform degree of drawing in the figures. The name was coined by Joost Swarte in 1977

Comic Book Video Tutorials – How to Draw Realistic Scales

Here is a great video that gives tips on drawing realistic scales for reptilian forms of snakes, dragons, alligators, crocodiles or lizards by artist Alphonso Dunn. He starts off with a pattern that helps to define the structure of the scales. Then by adding shadows and contrast to the shapes he gives depth to the scales.

Comic Art Reference – Drawing Holding Hands

Here is a great example of how to draw holding hands I have found on the net. These examples show how one persons hand clasps over someones else hand. Showing views from the side to the back. How a firm grip should look to how tightly clasped hands can be illustrated.

Comic Art Reference – Drawing Curves on Girls

Drawing curves on girls can be challenging. Here is a great tutorial I found by artist Ai-Bee that helps to break it down to simple shapes. In her words “The key are circles and other wibbly round shapes”. This tutorial shows how to approach pear shape, overlapping hourglass, and other plus size characters with basic circles.
