Bro: I really like the content but that beat is killing me. At points it sounds too poppy but the melody works really well

Me: Well that's not fair! I for one really love it. I'm glad it's more upbeat that their last collabo. He needs a poppy track for Hot 100. Something to get the masses on board. Otherwise, I think he'll stick to his (usual) rap songs

Bro: I figured this was that one radio single track but it's more about the fact that this is to be on the Marshall Mathers LP sequel. The original is raw and his single for the masses was really big in the charts but still didn't sacrifice too much on the hip hop sound. The beat is real smooth but I dislike that techno pop sound that seems to be in a whole lot of rap and R&B nowadays.

Me: You make an excellent point. I too can't stand it (techno beats infiltrating rap and r&b). Either Em is trying to recreate the magic they had or he's trying to go with what's hot right now. I always thought he was one of those rappers who spit so well that he doesn't have to spit to what's hot right now.

I had to pause and think about this. While I was thinking, flashes of rappers who have been in the game 10+ years and still rapping successfully flashed through my mind. Admittedly, those who've lasted have stayed true to their style. What do you think?

In Timberlake’s Case, Junior Album Slump?

Back when I would watch ‘N Sync on Dutch TV, I always thought that JC Chasez was the breakout star in the group: great voice, great dancing and looked manly. But alas, Justin it was. Justin really proved himself in my opinion. He could dance, sing ok and had stage presence.

His freshman album, Justified, is an instant classic. Still can’t believe that came out 11 years ago. That album started strong with “Senorita” and ended with a wonderful song “Never Again”. Yes it had some fillers but 11 years later I can still sing a chorus, eight bars, or the whole song of that album. Some of my all-time favorites include the aforementioned “Senorita”, “Take It From Here”, “Cry Me a River”and “Last Night”

With such success from the first album, he needed to prove himself with his second outing. But there is the “sophomore slump” – failure of the 2^nd album living up to the standards of the first album. Luckily for him and all of his fans, “FureSex/LoveSound” surpassed “Justified”. Unfortunately for me as an ‘N Sync fan, there was likely not to be a reunion tour. Unlike the first album which was primarily written and produced by both The Neptunes and Timbaland, his sophomore effort was solely a Timbaland production (apart from one Rick Rubin and Jawbreakers production).

Unlike the first album, this album could be left to play from start to finish without skipping any tracks. Just like “Justified”, “FutureSex/LoveSound” sounds super strong with the same titled track. How can you forget the bass line and percussions?! I went to the tour that promoted the album “FutureSex/LoveSound” and it was the perfect way to start off the show. I confess that the song is still heavily played on my iPod to this day.

The sophomore album is filled with so many gems it is truly hard to pick a few. Even the prelude to “My Love”, “Sexy Ladies/Let Me Talk To You” still stands out to me. “FutureSex/LoveSound”, “My Love”, “LoveStoned/I Think She Knows”, “Chop Me Up”, “Until The End of Time” and the closing song “(Another Song) All Over Again” are songs that still get me excited like the first time I heard them in 2005.

Thus it pains me to say that his Junior Album, “The 20/20 Experience”, is such a disappointment! It’s been 8 years since his sophomore album so I was really looking forward to this. I was expecting the same strong start and smooth finish. I cannot say that for “Pusher Love Girl” and “Blue Ocean Floor”. I do like the intro to “Blue Ocean Floor” but then it loses me. I also have an extremely hard time choosing a song that really stands out to me; something I have never struggled with on Timberlake album.

“Suit & Tie” – Timberlake and Jay Z could have found a better song to collaborate on. “Mirrors” – It highlights Timberlake’s weak voice. Yes people, he’s not the best singer; something we should all have known by now. But he’s thoroughly entertaining and used to choose songs that could stand the test of time and made this dancer want to get up and move. The closest he gets to that with this album is “Spaceship Coupe” and “Don’t Hold the Wall”. Even with that said I believe these 3 songs will not stand the test of time. Could this have been the reason for the release of “The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2” or weak sales?

Granted, “The 20/20 Experience” has gone double platinum but compared to his previous releases and his increased fame and popularity, more was expected. I will say that “You Got It On” off of 2 of 2 will be replayed constantly on iPod. That song is smooth, sexy, laid back and has me day dreaming. Very single worthy! Yes Justin, it sounds like falling in love. Bring more of this on the fourth album and my love will be renewed.

Does Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) Hate Women, Babies or Marriage?

Ok, hate is a strong word but I can’t help but think that Mr. Fellowes has something against women or better yet, married women.

Now, if you haven’t watched series 4 of Downton Abbey, SPOILER ALERT!! You have been warned.

At the beginning of the new series, it hit me that the Crowley women have had it rough in marriage. The Countess Cora lost her baby, Lady Mary lost her husband while having her baby while Lady Sybil died in child birth. It makes me almost grateful that Lady Edith has not been successful in the road towards marriage. I’d hate for her to meet the same fate.

I thought this fate was only on the Crowleys until I remembered Anna and Mr. Bates. Mr. Bates is sent to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Then as if the nicest person on the show hasn’t suffered enough, Anna gets raped. I mean seriously?! Watching Anna try to cope with the rape and her changed relationships with the men around her, particularly her husband, has really been heartbreaking. Anna’s mental condition is understandably frail.

Poor Mrs. Hughes, she is the one who holds all secrets; how does she not burst. Only Mrs. Hughes knows. Although Anna asked her not to say anything, Mrs. Hughes didn’t exactly promise she wouldn’t. I am really hoping she finds a way to let it be known who the perpetrator is and help Anna. But just like Anna feared, I am afraid that Mr. Bates will end up in jail when he finds out. I am just hoping Anna is not pregnant.

What Dreams May Come

Last night I had a dream about a guy. And as my dreams about men go, it was fucked up! Thursday night, in the midst of my delusion, I sent Paul Walker a tweet. Then last night, I had a dream that featured him and Vin Diesel. We happen to meet at a swanky party. Conversation was awesome and it felt like Paul and I connected. Next thing I know, he and Vin are walking away. In a moment of panic, I yell out "Paul, where are you going?!" He doesn't look back. I yell out again, "Wait for me!" I start to ran after him. At this point, he has somehow changed into his swimming trunks. He then tells me, "Look, I'm off to the beach. If you want to join me, you'll have to take care of my cat as I surf." A couple of things run through my mind. First, AWESOME! Paul is taking me to his apartment! Second, wait, um, I'm scared of pets; especially cats. But what is a girl to do when her crush is right in front of her. I decide to come clean. I start to tell him I'm scared but out comes the cat. Or so I thought. Paul's pet is a raccoon - if I want to spend time with him, I need to take care of the raccoon. But I want Paul, I want Paul sooo bad. I bend down to pick up the raccoon and BOOM, I wake up!

Now, I know this dream probably means I'm pursuing a difficult goal. But reality is, Paul never replied to my tweet, the hunky-blue-eyed-make-me-wanna-do-something-real-bad-to-you is not checking for me. Lastly, Fast Five is the closest I'm getting owning those lips.

Sidenote: thank you little brother for the 3am texts about the movie. My lack of sleep sure does appreciate it!

RIP Nate Dogg - King of Hooks

What a sad day in hip hop it is today. Nate Dogg has died at the age of 41 after suffering two previous strokes. When I heard Dr. Dre's Kush, I remember thinking how nice it would have been if Nate could have been featured more on the track instead of Akon. I want to share with you some of his collaborations that I really love. They are many but these I always loved. Don't expect to find Regulate, Area Codes or The Next Episode on this list. I love some of his work that was not necessarily mainstream. Thank you for leaving behind such a great soundtrack.

Confession time. I don't watch American Idol; never have and never will. However, I have seen very few performances posted on youtube e.g. Adam Lambert's take on Tracks of My Tears It was thus a great pleasure to see this next delight. In my opinion, Robert Downey Jr. is so cool and smooth in this. Jack Black although dramatic, has the moves down! I knew he can sing but I had no idea RDJ has some ballet and tap dance in his background. I'm loving this guy more and more. This clip is from from American Idol finale in 2008. I told you I don't watch that show!

2011 Academy Award Predictions

It's 6pm, the evening before the 2011 Oscars, and I'm finally done watching all the Oscar nominated films & docs (except 4 of the 5 foreign films). I wish I could get an invite to become a member of the Academy and vote. It's sad to know that many who can vote don't even watch all the films before voting. Before I give you my picks, do you know how the best film is chosen? Ok, let me try to explain.

So, after the whole The Dark Knight-not-getting-a-nomination debacle, something had to be done. That something resulted to 10 film best feature film nominations in the proceeding years. However, It's no longer who get's the most votes but rather who is higher on everyone's preference.

So, let's say 10 of us vote. Each person lists the best picture in order of preference. For me it's

The Social Network
The Fighter
Inception
Black Swan
The King's Speech
127 Hours
The Kids Are Alright
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter's Bone

Now, for a film to win, it has to garner 50% of the votes. So if the Social Network is not voted by 5 out of 10 of us, one film that ranks at the bottom needs to get the boot. So if Winter's Bone is ranked lowest on most of the 10 ballots, it get's booted and its votes redistributed based on popularity. So, if The Social Network, Inception and The Fighter was ranked highly amongst the remaining 9 ballots, then they'll get most of the redistributed votes. This continues until we arrive at the final film. So, it's possible that although I rank the Social Network highly on my ballot, it may get surpassed in number of votes if the other ballots don't rank it as highly. So, you can find the King's Speech or Inception beating it come Oscar night. Hope that makes sense.

As for the rest of my picks, they are as follows:

Best Director:
It's hard to pick which way the Academy will go. Tom Hooper won the Director's Guild Award for directing The King's Speech. However, The Social Network is also a strong contender thus so is David Fincher. I'm going with Tom Hooper.

Best Actress:
Natalie Portman in Black Swan. I love Annette Bening. However, Natalie owns the role and you just get lost in her. Unless the Academy wishes to overlook this and award Annette for losing to Hilary Swank twice, it's Natalie Portman's statuette to lose.

Best Actor:
This was tough for me. Jesse Eisenberg truly annoyed the sh*t out of me as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. James Franco also made 127 Hours truly riveting to watch as the only cast member for most of the film. However, Colin Firth in The King's Speech has the edge this year. And I dare ANYONE to say otherwise!

Best Supporting Actress:
This is hard. It really can go either way between Melissa Leo in The Fighter or Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit. The Academy does love kid actors and first time nominees in best supporting female categories tend to win. See Ana Paquin, Tatum O'neil, Jennifer Hudson and Marlee Matlin to name a few. But, despite history, I give this one to Melissa Leo.

Best Supporting Actor:
There's no competition here - Christian Bale in The Fighter - moving on.

Animated Feature Film:
This is a tie between Toy Story 3 and The Illusionist. The Academy loves Pixar film and Sylvain Chomet (the Illusionist) won this category the last time he was nominated for The Triplets of Belleville (I loved it!). But I'm going with Toy Story 3.

Best Documentary:
I've only watched 4 out of the 5 due to availability. My sister and I truly feel Restrepo should win. However, I think the Academy will go with Exit Through The Gift Shop.

Adapted Screenplay:
The Social Network will edge out Toy Story 3

Original Screenplay:
Inception should and will win.

'Cause I eat a lot of vegetables. It has nothing to do with Oprah's final Favorite Things Episode. This year Oprah decided to do two episodes. I Need a Doctor ft. Eminem and Liz Rodrigues is the "official" first single. First, this feels like an Eminem track featuring Dr. Dre. Secondly, I'm not sold on this one. Dre might want to rethink detoxification and hit that chronic one more time. Take a listen. Doesn't it give you a Love The Way You Lie vibe?

Adele is back! The first single off her new album, 21, has dropped. Rolling in the deep makes me believe that she will not suffer the best new artist Grammy curse. Oh, do you not know about that? Ok, then. I will write you a little article about that.

Adele's sophomore cd is co-produced by Rick Rubin. Yes, Def Jam's Rick Rubin who did a great job on hip hop acts and the last cd by the Dixie Chicks, Taking The Long Way Home Her soulful voice is perfectly laden with anger and rage needed for this revenge-filled ballad. Amen to seeing the light and being a strong woman; that lover will wish he never met her! Adele fans will not be disappointed and she will definitely make new fans off of this track. Looking forward to February 22nd.

The girl in the music video is actress Eve Hewson, Bono's daughter. The song is very fitting for these times - Ooh these times are hard, yeah they're making us crazy, don't give up on me baby. They're raping err body out here! We looking for you...we gon find you! Antoine Dodson fell into some fame accidentally. Someone broke into his family home and tried to rape his sister. The news crew run a report about it and obviously Antoine and his sister had something say about it. The rest of it, well, he took it to the bank with the Bed Intruder Song. And then to BET Hip Hop Awards last night. He's made so much money he was able to move his mom out of the projects. What can I do to move myself out of my current situation and pursue this entertainment writing thing full time? Pointers? Suggestions?
