Thanks so much, Shiela! You all oughta click on it and see what it's about.

But I did also notice it's been over a year since I posted. I have been a little busy. You see, my Mommy walks me morning and evening all over the neighborhood. She thinks it's for her but I love getting out sniffing all the new smells and seeing all the other doggies. Then when she goes to work I sleep and renew my energy for when she gets home. Plus I did have another birthday this year, I turned 14! I've been with my boy and Mommy for 10 years. You remember I was a found dog that got left in a storm and they took me in and loved me all these years. So it takes a bit more nap time to be ready for when they get home and I get excited to see them and get ready for the walk time! So hopefully this catches you all up on what I've been up to this year. Talk to you soon.

The reason tearstains are so hard to eradicate is that they are a visible symptom of a deeper systemic problem.
The most common cause of the redness is yeast infection which in turn is produced by bacteria. That’s why, if you want to get rid of tearstains, wiping the eyes is only the first step. Unless you boost your best friend’s immunity, the bacteria will persist and so will the stains. happytails has created two new products that work together to fight the problem from the inside and out.STEP 1 Clean the eye area with convenient, hypo-allergenic EyePads. There's nothing to mix, nothing to measure, Simply take out a pre moistened pad and the herbal infusion gently clears away unsightly smudges. Rub with and against the grain of the fur for maximum effectiveness. The pads are soaked with herbs and botanicals that reduce the discoloration and inhibit the bacteria that cause it.
The pads contain no pharmaceutical antibiotics so are perfectly safe for all dogs

STEP 2 Sprinkle Eyemunity powder on your dog's food every day. The unique formula contains a nutrient rich, high-metabolite immunogen (Epicor) that has been clinically proven to boost immunity on both animals and humans. An improved immune system will fight the annoying bacteria that is the root cause of the redness.
The all natural formula contains no pharmaceutical antibiotics so it won't upset your dog's delicate system and it tastes delicious! Just mix it right into his food and he'll never know. Best of all, not only will it help with that under-eye staining but it will also improve your best friend's overall health! How great is that?

For the love of our doggies!

These statements have nor been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Here are just a few ways to ensure that your household is pet poison-proof:

* Keep prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as painkillers, cold and flu preparations and antidepressants behind tightly closed cabinet doors.

* Make sure chocolate, coffee and other potentially dangerous foods are kept out of pets' reach.

* When using products to eliminate fleas, ticks and other pests, follow directions exactly. Be sure the item you’re using has been formulated specifically for your pet, and check with your veterinarian before using it.

* Many common household plants such as lilies, azaleas and kalanchoe can cause surprisingly severe, even life-threatening effects in pets. DECK THE HALLS—BUT DO IT SAFELY, PLEASE

I received this email from the ASPCA and thought you might want to read it:
For many of us, ‘tis the season to decorate our homes with live Christmas trees and holiday greenery. But did you know that some of these yuletide traditions can be hazardous to your pet’s health?

* Lovely lilies are commonly used in holiday floral arrangements, but many varieties—including tiger, Asian, Japanese show, stargazer and the Casablanca—can cause kidney failure in cats if ingested.

* Bag the boughs of holly and live mistletoe. Sure, they add a nice touch to your holiday décor, but holly can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy if eaten by your pet. And should he sample mistletoe, he could suffer gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. Opt for just-as-jolly artificial plants made from silk or plastic.

* Christmas tree water may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria—and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe.

If you suspect that your animal companion has eaten a potentially toxic substance, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for round-the-clock telephone assistance. A fee may apply.

For more holiday safety tips, don’t miss this video hosted by our very own Dr. Steven Hansen, a board-certified toxicologist and Senior Vice President, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

Have a Merry Christmas!

The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches
manufactured at two of the Fund's United States facilities. These products are both manufactured and sold under private-label and are contract-manufactured for some national brands. Over the past several days, the Fund has received feedback in the United States (none in Canada) raising concerns about pet food manufactured since early December, and its impact on the renal health of the pets consuming the products. Shortly after receipt of the first
complaint, the Fund initiated a substantial battery of technical tests, conducted by both internal and external specialists, but has failed to identify any issues with the products in question. The Fund has, however, discovered that timing of the production associated with these complaints, coincides with the introduction of an ingredient from a new supplier. The Fund stopped using this ingredient shortly after this discovery and production since then has been undertaken using ingredients from another source.

At the same time, the Fund's largest customer, for which it manufactures on a contract basis, received a small number of consumer complaints and has initiated its own recall. Furthermore, for the time being, the customer has put future orders for cuts and gravy products on hold. This customer's cuts and gravy purchases in 2006 represented approximately 11% of the Fund's annual revenue. "We take these complaints very seriously and, while we are still looking for a specific cause, we are acting to err on the side of caution" said Paul K. Henderson, President and CEO, Menu Foods. "We will do whatever is necessary to ensure that our products maintain the very highest quality standards."

While the number of complaints has been relatively small, Menu is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution, because the health and well-being of pets is paramount to the Fund.
In addition to changing suppliers, for production after March 6, the Fund has increased testing of all raw materials and finished goods. It is also working closely with regulatory authorities and its customers to learn more and will take whatever additional actions are appropriate.

In order to determine whether cat and dog food in their possession is subject to recall, consumers should refer to the list of brand names ("listed products") at www.menufoods.com/recall. This will be available by 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007. Products not identified on the website can continue to be used.

Taken from: http://www.menufoods.com/recall/Press_Recall_03162007.pdf

The toxic effect of onions is the same whether they are raw, cooked or dehydrated.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG RAISINS. Raisins and grapes can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and possible kidney failure.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG MACADAMIA NUTS. When ingested, macadamia nuts can cause muscular weakness, depression, vomiting, incoordination, tremors, fever, abdominal pain and muscle stiffness. A dog's front legs are minimally affected but the back legs can become paralyzed. While affected dogs can be back to normal in 72 hours, some dogs may have been unnecessarily euthanized the problem was misdiagnosed as serious spinal injuries.

Here are some links that will cover more information on this:
http://mooreshaven.com/pets/dogs/safety/badfoodslist.html
http://www.twodogpress.com/healthy.html
http://www.dogpack.com/health/GrapesRaisinsAndDogs.html

We love our doggies and want to keep them safe.

Don't have a pet food bakery in your town? All natural, preservative free, gourmet pet goodies, packed in small cellophane bags or window boxes, can be found in pet stores, gift shops, in many supermarkets and department stores, and on the internet. There is an endless number of online gourmet pet food bake shops. Some merchants specialize in all vegetarian treats, in low-fat treats, or in treats for pets with food allergies.

A word of caution, especially If your dog is overweight .... Even though gourmet treats are made with human quality, healthy ingredients, the calories and fat content can sometimes be quite high. If you're dog has a weight problem, check the ingredients and stick with the lower fat treats. Treats should not make up more than 10 percent of a dog’s daily diet.

If you like to bake, you can pamper your dogs with treats like these, fresh from your own kitchen, at a fraction of the cost of buying them. For some of the recipes, you probably already have many of the ingredients, especially if you're a bread maker. You mix and bake them like other cookies, but the thickness of the dough in most dog biscuit recipes is greater than in most of our cookie recipes, so baking times are generally longer.

Here is a link to some recipes:

Global Paw

However, House Bill 2991 is currently pending in the Committee on Revision of Laws that provides a stiffer penalty to dog meat traders. Introduced by Representative Francis Escudero, the creation of the bill was based on the need to upgrade an Act that, as noble as the objectives of the law are, the traders remain elusive because the penalty is unrealistic. The penalty must be upgraded.

OUR GOAL is to obtain OVER 50,000 signatures by APRIL 30, 2007.The Bill is expected to be addressed by Congress in May 2007. It is obvious that the only way we can ensure that dogs in the Philippines are protected is to place the Philippines government under the international spotlight.

Go to this link to sign the petition:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/879609320?ltl=1168814875

I had a fun thanksgiving and I'm receiving emails from other doggies who had fun, too!

Here's this one from Skeeter:
OH BOY!! OH BOY!! OH BOY!! I do LOVE Thanksgiving. Every year on this day I get a little bit of turkey and I LOVE turkey. Normally I don't get "people food" because I have an extremely sensitive digestive system and have almost died twice because someone fed me something from the table. BUT, turkey doesn't seem to hurt me as long as it's not over a couple of ounces so Mommy makes sure I get turkey at Thanksgiving. My Grandma and Grandpa came to visit today and I was so excited to see them because they don't visit very often. I jumped all over them and licked them and smelled them all over. Then Mommy put me and Sam outside for a while because Grandma and Grandpa didn't like how excited Sam and I got at seeing them. Mom says they're old and "crochity", whatever that means.I hope all of you dogs had a great Thanksgiving and got some turkey of your own to eat.
Skeeter

Here's my response:
Hi Skeeter, I laughed and laughed...I get excited too when people come over. My Mommie has to answer the door leaning over because she's always having to hold my collar so I don't jump on everyone. I'm over 12 and she's still trying to train me not to jump. I try hard, but sometimes I lose control and jump anyway. I, too, am so happy to see people.Usually Mommie saves me one little bite of her food, but yesterday EVERYBODY saved me lots of bites of their food. I was the only doggie here so I got spoiled. Now today we're back to normal.I'm glad you wrote, I laughed and laughed.
Sammie

Send me your story and photo and I'll post it here.

As you read it think about going to your local shelter and saving a dog...miracles could happen!

The 2006 ASPCA Dog of the Year:

Lucy, a five-year-old street-smart German Shepherd, is more than just a loving companion to the Jennifer and Keith Gorsuch family of Littleton, Illinois. Lucy’s heroic efforts saved her family’s life one night in March when she detected smoke coming from the basement right below where the Gorsuch’s 11-year-old daughter slept. Lucy alerted Jennifer by climbing on the bed and jumping on her chest and barking, and the family, their home and four other dogs—who slept through the incident—were spared.

Originally found on the streets of Chicago, Lucy was awaiting euthanasia at a municipal shelter when a worker from the Quincy Humane Society decided to give her another chance. Months later, after losing her German Shepherd Sassy, Jennifer visited the shelter and fell in love with the barking dog who was going wild in her cage. Lucy had mange and was underweight, but Jennifer says,” I couldn’t have asked for more. She was just misunderstood.”

At the Gorsuch house, pets are a family affair. Jennifer is a library and computer specialist at Webster Elementary School in Rushville, Illinois, and also a 4-H leader. She uses every opportunity to teach children how to care for animals. Keith supports the family affair by helping Jennifer take care of their multiple animal household. Jennifer’s mother is involved in area trap-neuter-release programs for feral cats, and Miranda volunteers at local shelters and assists taking photos of available animals for Petfinder.com. All of the animals at the Gorsuch home are either adopted or rescued, and they all have their own unique story. “People have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of animals. Take that chance and do what is right. To all the people who speak for those without a voice, I thank you,” Jennifer says.

While there are a few foods that both humans and pets can enjoy, there are others that, while perfectly safe and healthy for people, can be dangerous to our animal companions. "Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as persin,” says Dana Farbman, CVT, of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC). “The Guatemalan variety, which is the most common variety found in stores, appears to be the most problematic.”

The primary concern in dogs is with gastrointestinal irritation, including vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, these effects are seen in dogs who have scavenged on significant quantities of fruit or branches. Birds and rodents appear to be particularly sensitive to avocado, and ingestion can result in respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the heart and even death.
For additional information, please visit ASPCA online.

If you suspect that your animal companion has eaten avocado—or any other potentially dangerous substance—call your veterinarian or the APCC's emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for round-the-clock telephone assistance. I need your help. I am part of dogster.com and I keep running out of bones. Please visit my dogster page and leave me a bone (you'll see what I mean when you get there...it's free). My page is: http://www.dogster.com/pet_page.php?i=310056
And if you're a Cocker Spaniel you can join my group...Curly Eared Cockers...even if your ears are shaved. Four times a year my mommie takes me to get groomed and I come home with shaved ears but I'm still part of the group. If you want to help, please pass on the information.

Here's their story!
Arrival Story: MUNCHKIN is not actually our dog. We are trying to help her family bring her back home again. She was tragically lost while being boarded (since she was being boarded she had no collar or tags on, the vet she was at has folks remove the collars when they leave the dog). She was on MontClair road in Birmingham at the time (Mt. Brook/Crestline/Forest Park area). Her family is distraught and trying very hard to find her. They live out of town and have to ask for help from the community.

PLEASE look at her website FIND MUNCHKIN and tell everyone you know to be looking for her. If you know ANYONE near Birmingham, please spread the word. It can only help.

Bio: There is a $1000 reward for her return.

Contact information is:
Montclair Animal Clinic
205/595-4440
David McElroy
205/540-1549
Melissa Smith
205/792-6886 (Tuscaloosa number)
E-mail: FindMunchkin@yahoo.com

Forums Motto: $1000 REWARD FOR SAFE RETURN!!!!

Now even though that particular email was a hoax I decided to just bring up a topic we may sometimes forget: dogs don't read the labels. We may think that's a funny thing to say but some of the wonderful cleaners or bug killers we may be using can make our beloved doggies (or cats) sick. There is this wonderful glue like substance that attracts and kills roaches but I noticed it also attracted my dog. I put it in the creases and corners just like the instructions but I noticed my doggie going behind me trying to lick it. So I had to put things in front of it until it dried and the scent or whatever stopped attracting him.

I also noticed that my doggie likes to chase after frogs. When we lived in Texas there was a certain time of year that the frogs came out in droves and when I would walk him he would jerk me around trying to chase them. If he accidentally got one in his mouth he would end up foaming at the mouth from whatever it is the frog would secreet. He would shake his head as if it were something terrible in his mouth but then he continually would try to catch frogs until that season was over and they were gone. So that just shows me that our sweet doggies don't know how to decide what's good for them and what's not. We have the very important job of treating them forever as if they were little two-year-old toddlers that need the protection of house proofing.

If you have any other ideas, please feel free to make comments.

Some stories are about doggies separated from their owners because of Hurricane Katrina but some are just because...

She's not a Cocker Spaniel but I just wanted to share Annie's storie:
"It all started on July 9th, that was the morning I became homeless you see.My owners got up early in the morning and brought me with them in the car. I was so happy to be going somewhere with my owners at that time. Then we got to the shelter we were there before anyone else was there. They got me out of the car and brought me to the door of the shelter, then they put me down and got back into the car and drove off. I didn't know what to do so I laid next to the door until the people who worked at the shelter came and picked me up. They took me into the shelter and put me in a kennel. It was very scary in the shelter, and I tried to get someone to take me home anytime someone would walk past my kennel. Many people came and passed by, but nobody took me out and two weeks passed by. I was starting to loose hope. But then, a lady and her little sister came into the shelter passed up the other dogs and ran to my kennel. She looked at the cage number and then looked at me. She blew a sigh of relief and said that this is the one. She fosters dogs for a r!escue group and had seen my info on the internet. She said that she loves Border Collies and when she saw my picture she hoped she would not be to late to save me. So she took me out and brought me to her house were she gave me a bath and gave me some bad tasting wormer. She said it would help me get rid of any worms that were living in me. She also said that she will be taking me to the vet this week for a checkup and shots. I am starting to have fun again. It's alot better here than it was at the shelter. I hope all the other dogs/puppies get saved too. I am now just hopeing I can find a forever home where I can run and play. I have been watching some of the Border Collies who live here do agility and I would love to learn how to do that too."
Here is her link: http://www.dogster.com/pet_page.php?i=353825&j=t

They are euthing today. We don't know yet how many. :(
The pictures below only show the newest dogs/puppies that have come in and none that were held over from last week are pictured here but are on our page. Also, there are even more than this. The photographer was there all day yesterday and didn't have enough time to get eveyone's photos so she is back today trying to get the rest photographed. She tried to get the most urgent posted first. One person turned in almost 20 little dogs. Most are under 20 lbs. She claimed they showed up at her house over the last couple of weeks.... hmmm. This forced the shelter to call for euths today. :(http://www.shelterrescue.org/"

ps: There weren't any pictures attached, he may have been refering to the web site. Sassie always takes over the pillows and she's about to fall asleep for her afternoon nap. Mikko is big and she's very gentle but her hips hurt her so she has to take medicine and it takes her longer to get outside and down the back steps to go to the backyard. We are each playing with our toys now and they do inspire me to chase the ball.
I'll keep you updated.

I'm feeling a little off today cuz I'm used to Mommy by myself and now she pets them, too. I'm glad it's only a week. They drink my water and they have their own bowl!!!! When Mommy has leftovers she splits it 3 ways so we each get one. They steal my chew sticks when I'm not looking!! OOOHHH! How am I going to last through this week? Help!!! The picture is of Sassie guarding my bowls. She has just taken over!!! I will keep you posted on how it goes.
Sammie
