Review: Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares

I've been a fan of Ghirardelli Chocolate since my first trip to San Francisco about 15 years ago. Not only is this delicious to eat but to bake with as well. It's one of the only chocolates I use because of its high quality.

Disney World fans will know this chocolate well. Located in Downtown Disney across from World of Disney is Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop. Not only can you enjoy sinfully sweet treats like The Gold Rush (peanut butter hot fudge sundae), The World Famous (hot fudge sundae) and Quake Shake (a chocolate bar infused milkshake) but you can shop for your favorite Ghirardelli chocolate candy.

One of my favorite's is the chocolate squares! You can pick these up as well as many times sample one at the Downtown Disney location. During the holidays you'll find limited edition squares like Peppermint Bark.

Milk Chocolate Truffle Squares

This square has creamy milk chocolate with a rich truffle filling. It's very sweet! Probably my least favorite of the squares. However, I do find milk chocolate to be very sweet.

Dark Chocolate Truffle Squares

The Dark Chocolate Truffle square was the one I preferred over the two. It's much less sweet, and is rich and decadent. I found that you can taste the truffle filling more in this one than in the milk chocolate version.

Caramel, oh a weakness of mine. It's one of my favorite filling! This milk chocolate square is filled with a butter caramel.

This has to be my favorite of all of the Ghirardelli Chocolate squares! Rich, intense dark chocolate filled with luscious, buttery caramel that's enhanced by the savory sea salt. Anyone who likes sea salt caramel must try these. I am a little biased when it comes to this. It has two of my favorites - dark chocolate and sea salt caramel, so really I don't think it could have gone wrong. This is this best chocolate I've had with a creamy, soft center of caramel though.

White mint covered in dark chocolate, now that is a luxurious chocolate. This is the kind of chocolate you hind in your work drawer. It's refreshing, minty goodness!

My favorite fruit and fruit flavor is raspberry. If I see raspberry anything on a menu, I'm ordering it. So, no surprise to me, this was a delicious square. You can even see the raspberry seeds in the jam-like filling.

Except for the truffle squares all of the others were soft, creamy centers. If I had to rank them based on my favorites... Sea Salt Caramel, Raspberry, Mint, Caramel (milk chocolate), Truffle (dark chocolate) and lastly Truffle (milk chocolate). All of these are fantastic! If you haven't tried Ghirardelli Chocolates before, you must!

Available for a limit time during the Star Wars Weekends celebration at Disney's Hollywood Studios is the Darth Vader cupcake. Besides the food court in Darth's Maul, you can pick up the cupcakes at ABC Commissary, Backlot Express, Studio Catering Co., Starring Rolls Cafe, and Toy Story Pizza Planet.

Now, I'm someone who likes but doesn't love chocolate and don't care too much for milk chocolate (it's just too sweet and doesn't have enough cocoa flavor), so I was a little hesitant to dig in.

At first glance this cupcake looks like a chocolate lovers dream. But looks can be deceiving! Hidden underneath Darth Vader and the covering of chocolate pieces and shavings is peanut butter icing.

I was surprised by the not just the amount of peanut butter frosting but the chocolate was dark chocolate. The cake was moist, which I always start with (I'm a save the best for last kinda girl), but nothing overwhelmingly great.

I'm sure you're wondering about the light saber. No it doesn't make sounds and yes it's edible. Made of white chocolate, some of the locations have it painted red while others have it as is. A couple of them where even made of chocolate, but I did find most to be worth of Darth Vader.

Overall, I really enjoyed this cupcake. Might even be one of my favorites. For someone who's favorite dessert isn't cupcakes, this one is fantastic. I even enjoy a second!

One little tidbit, if you are on the Disney Dining Plan you can get this for dessert!

The Main Street U.S.A. staple, Carnation Café is ready to reopen with expanded seating and face-lift.

Oscar Martinez is back with a new menu which still includes some fan favorites like the classic baked potato soup and "Walt's Favorites". On the breakfast menu, Oscar's Choice will remain but with the option of chicken-apple sausage links. Huevos rancheros with corn tortillas, poached eggs, salsa and avocado-black bean pico de gallo has been added as well as, apple-granola pancakes and spinach & egg white frittata.

What Restaurant Would You Move to Disney World?

If you had the option to move one restaurant from Disneyland, what would it be?

Welcome to those of you joining me from Disney Babies Blog and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 3rd stop on our Magical Blogorail.

Disneyland has so many unique, great dining experiences that you can only find there. It's hard to pick just one! Rancho del Zocalo is one of the best quick service restaurants at the Disney parks and I never pass it up when heading out west. Goofy's Kitchen is my favorite character meal of all time. Then there is Napa Rose with its beautiful dining room, fantastic service and exceptional food. And of course, Club 33, Walt Disney's private dining room for members and their guests. However, I'm going with a restaurant with cuisine that is near and dear to me - Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen.

Why?
I'm glad you asked! I spent a few years working in a Cajun and Creole restaurant that was based out of New Orleans. The food was incredible, not a single dish on the menu wasn't fantastic. Because of this (and trips to New Orleans) I love the food but I must admit I'm quite picky about it.

Courtyard

What Makes It So Great?
Step inside an be transported to the Big Easy. This two-story French Quarter designed restaurant has wrought iron balconies, an open-air courtyard, a fountain and lush greens. At ground level is the dining area and Creole Cafe, a quick service location. Upstairs from the restaurant is Flambeaux's, a New Orleans-style jazz club.

Ralph Brennan's has wonderful food! They offer some of my favorites such as Gumbo Ya-Ya, crab cakes, po' boys, red beans and rice, jambalaya, BBQ shrimp & grits (I love making this at home!)... And for dessert, bananas foster, beignets, New Orleans bread pudding; but the most indulgent and decadent dessert is the double chocolate bread pudding that you have to order at the beginning of your meal.

Oh, and they have a Jazz Brunch on Sundays! This way you'll have a dinner and a concert all in one.

Where Would It Go?
Pleasure Island in Downtown Disney! This area could use a little bit more since the closure of all of the bars and clubs. It's already home to two other unique restaurants - Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant featuring Irish food and Paradiso 37 featuring South, Central and North American food. What better place to add a Cajun and Creole restaurant!

The newest signature dining restaurant at Disney California Adventure, Carthay Circle Restaurant, is located on the second floor of the new park icon, Carthay Circle Theatre. The stage of Buena Vista Street is set back in 1937, the premier of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Golden Age of Hollywood.

The dynamic duo of Napa Rose, Executive Chef Andrew Sutton and Chef Gloria Tae come together again to create a menu filled with signature dishes featuring local produce, seafood and meat. The cuisine will be fresh, exciting and delicious.

For lunch dine on divine dishes like Crispy Firecracker Duck Wings finished with soy, lime and Sriracha chili sauce; Angus Flank Steak Cobb Salad with Mine Shaft blue cheese, bacon, avocado, and arugula with Cabernet essence; and Sautéed Northern Halibut with roasted red bell pepper, caperberry and orange relish.

Make sure you save room for dessert! There are many sinfully good sweets like the Fried Banana Split Monte Cristo sundae with raspberry and chocolate fudge ice creams, toffee nuts and warm caramel rum bananas.

Filling in for Ariel's Grotto for the "World of Color" package will be Carthay Circle Restaurant. Choose from an appetizer and an entrée, or an entrée and a dessert, for either lunch or dinner to receive a ticket to access the center-stage viewing area.

Both the food and the cocktails will be inspired by the era. The menu has been broken down into the following categories - Snacks, Bites, Rolls, Small Plates and Finger Desserts.

Disney Magic and Kids: Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater

Disney's Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater is a wonderful experience to share with your child. During a recent vacation to Disney, we took my son for his first time to see what dining here was all about.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater

Ambiance
This restaurant is located in Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park near Star Tours. Reservations for your meal are recommended. Once you get to the restaurant, guests are taken to either a picnic-style table with umbrella or a convertible-style table. The picnic tables are typically reserved for parties of under 4, while the cars are given to parties over 4. Should you want a convertible, be sure to request so when making reservations. All available seating faces towards a very large movie screen where guests see a variety of '50s and '60s sci-fi movie clips.

In addition to the great movies being played, the servers are dressed in outfits befitting the 50's and 60's times. The surrounding room also includes a nighttime sky filled with stars and shadowy trees that make the scene feel even more realistic. Throughout the meal, my son kept wondering aloud how it got to be nighttime so quickly. We could not convince him that the room was setup to look like it was nighttime. Only once we left did he finally understand!

Food and Drink
The restaurant features American-style foods such as burgers, fries, sandwiches, pastas, soups, and salads. And be sure to not miss their wonderful, rich milkshakes in a variety of flavors. Guests over 21 can even enjoy shakes with Baileys Irish Cream or peppermint schnapps.

Overall
My son most enjoys the ambiance and entertainment features of this restaurant. Never having experienced a drive-in theater, this was quite the lunch adventure for him.

As of today the first 100 people on the 800+ waiting list for Club 33 will be receiving embossed invitations. The initial membership fee for individuals is $25,000 with a annual due of $10,000.

Club 33 Disneyland

This is part of the addition of the private lounge, 1901 (the year Walt was born), opening on June 15 in Disney California Adventure. So now we know what was being hinted at during the D23 Expo last August. The lounge is located on the bottom floor of Carthay Circle Theatre and will serve drinks and appetizers only.

Members get VIP tours, valet parking, four annual passes and 50 day passes that they can give to guests.

At Disneyland Hotel, "Join Cinderella and Her Princess Friends for Disney's Royal Buffet for Mother's Day" has an all-you-care-to-eat buffet from 10 am - 3 pm in the Grand Ballroom. There will be musical entertainment, champagne and a chocolate fountain.

Blue Bayou

Blue Bayou has a prix fixe menu featuring pan-seared, hazelnut-crusted sea bass with king crab legs, preserved lemon and butter sauce, sweet corn green chili risotto, spicy mango jelly and Nicoise olive fennel relish.

Plaza Inn

Plaza Inn will also have a prix fixe menu. Theirs will feature pineapple-glazed, spiced salmon with peach-strawberry salsa, rice pilaf, sautéed green beans and bread sticks.

The majority of the bands have performed the concert series in the past. Both Smash Mouth and Javier Colon are newcomers to the series.

Smash Mouth made waves in the '90's with hit songs "All Star" and "Walkin' in the Sun". In the 2000's they had a hit with The Monkey's "I'm a Believer". Do they have a Disney connection? Why, yes they do! For The Jungle Book 2 they remade the Sherman Brothers' "I Wanna Be Like You".

Javier Colon won the hearts of America on NBC's "The Voice" in 2011. Signed to Universal Republic Records he released Come Through For You with the debut single "As Long As We Got Love" featuring Natasha Bedingfield. Does he have a Disney connection? Well, sort of. The song "Raise Your Hand" was co-written with Kris Allen, American Idol winner season 8. With the American Idol Experience in Disney's Hollywood Studios he has a little bit of a Disney connection?

Master Chef Kevin Dundon has created a special menu for Midsummer's Feast. This four-course meal will include fresh seasonal flavors with craft beers.

About Midsummer

Midsummer is a fun, lively festival rooted in long standing summer customs and traditions. It's held during summer solstice, the longest day of the year, in many European countries (especially those in Northern Europe). It's a pagan holiday that blesses the crops and fields to ensure a good harvest.

In Ireland, many towns and cities have festivals with fairs, concerts, feasting and fireworks. Smaller towns, particularly in the Northwest, bonfires are part of the celebration.

Carthay Circle Theatre Update

Please welcome Vincent "Bubba" Alvarez as the Disneyland Resort reporter to Cooking with Mickey. Bubba is the Disneyland Correspondant for Sorcerer Radio, a former Disneyland Cast Member, and Disneyland Annual Passholder. He'll be sharing information on everything Disneyland.

Scheduled to open June 15, 2012, Buena Vista Street will be reminiscent of of 1920s Hollywood when Walt Disney first arrived. The new entrance will take guests back in time to a more glamorous, romantic Hollywood. Carthay Circle Theatre will be the new icon for Disney California Adventure.

Tutto Italia Reopening Day Ceremony

Disney Parks Blog shared several photos from the grand reopening of Tutto Italia.

Who was there to celebrate? Mickey and Minnie of course! Chef Joachim Splichal, founder of Patina Restaurant Group; Erin Youngs, vice president of Epcot; and Nick Valenti, CEO of Patina Restaurant Group were all on hand to do the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Guest had the chance to take a first look at the new Tutto Gusto!

Hopefully I'll be reporting on these changes sooner than later. Check back for a future review of both Tutto Italia and Tutto Gusto.

Tutto Italia Ristorante is now open once again and guests can make their reservations. Adding to this refurbishment has been the highly anticipated Tutto Gusto wine bar.

Disney Parks Blog reported on the reopening and shared some of the changes and additions.

The update to Tutto Italia gives a more spacious feel and includes outdoor seating with ceiling fans and lighting. The interior has new carpet and new dark-wood booths to complement the original murals and beautiful chandeliers.

To the right of Tutto Italia is Tutto Gusto wine bar. Inspired by a traditional Italian wine cellar, the decor is simple with wood-beam ceiling, stone flooring, brick arches, and a fireplace.

Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure

Trolley Treats, the newest confectionery store on Buena Vista Street, is set to open June 15 at Disney California Adventure.

In the window you'll find a model of Rock Candy Mountain. Some of you may already know about the concept for it, it was featured in the D23 calendar for December 2010. In early 1957 Imagineers had envisioned this mountain to be located near the canal boats and have Casey Jr. train tracks travel around it.

Trolley Treats will offer gourmet marshmallows, hand-pulled taffy, caramel apples, hand-dipped strawberries, toffee, fudge and more. You'll also be able to watch the Candy Makers at work!

Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner and Tortilla Jo's in Downtown Disney, Disneyland has the celebration for you!

Tortilla Jo's will be offering a special three-course meal for $27. Which includes your choice of:

First Course
Soupa de Chorizo con Pappas – Creamy Russet Potato Soup served with sautéed leeks and Mexican chorizo topped with a cilantro oil drizzle and crema fresca
Ensalada de Berros – Crisp watercress tossed in orange bacon vinaigrette topped with shaved fennel, diced tomatoes, sunkist orange segments and grated parmesan cheese

Second Course
Pescado Estilo Veracruz – Pan-seared red snapper served with seasoned green onion fingerling potatoes topped with a jalapeno caper Veracruz sauce
Tinga de Carne – Slow-roasted, shredded beef tinga on a bed of boston lettuce topped with cotija cheese and lemon crema fresca accompanied with Fresno chile frijoles and tortilla ribbons
