Interwoven Landscapes

is my exploration into water and landscapes in all forms. I have lived in the city of Darebin and have for the past three years taken myself out to Northern Victoria. First to KingLake in the Hills where I had some difficulty adapting to life in the country even though I’ve always loved forests and the environment.

It was also an awakening on what I’ve taken for granted. In the city of Darebin and within city environments I have felt more or less accepted for things like sexuality and you always have an ability to move if needed to, find friends, to shift environments.

I have found country living from a personal point of view at times quite lonely, but still I’m excited deep down about living day to day in the bush.

My artworks in Interwoven Landscapes look at many factors of my experiences from examining how drought affects these communities just north of Melbourne. My observations where made when we moved from King Lake to Seymour. The absolute devastation the drought had on the landscape between the mountains and Seymour was a stark realisation on questions of water use and how we have affected our country. Obviously this is very topical in terms of the Pipe Line being constructed from the Goulburn River to Melbourne.

Ironically we now live on the banks of the Goulburn River where much of the source of my new banner works have stemmed from. I took a series of photographs from the river and have started a closer examination of all sources of water and landscape this is an ongoing current theme.

The other aspect of my art in Interwoven Landscapes is that I have also looked at my own personal change in moving to the country and celebrate many aspects of communities and people I’ve met. I also have been strongly influenced by music in the development of my style it has always been an intention for myself to work towards artworks, which create a similar effect as music does on an audience. I have always spent many nights and days at gigs around the City of Darebin, Brunswick and Fitzroy with all forms of music from punk, grunge, blues and country.

These are reflected in my artworks.

I hope in my works to reflect diversity and engage an audience.

I have had a showing of this artwork in April this year at the Harvest Homestead in Avenel, which was a 2 day event and would love to be able to exhibit again to a city audience.

These following links are important resources for Australian artists, but there are also some world wide links that will connect you with competitions, exhibitions and opportunities. Some are free to join, but there is always good reasons to up-grade as this often allows you greater opportunities to use various web-site resources as well as receiving information first.

The first arts site I'd like to discuss is Arts Hub this site is available also in the USA and UK and has the most extensive art based job listings that I have found. There is a subscription cost, but it is well worth it. You will get all the latest info on this site and I have always found it comprehensive as well allowing me to enter various competitions and apply for various positions from all fields of art. You can't go without being a member of this site.

I was introduced to OpenZine late last year. I was also quite excited by this site. Openzine provides and easy application based Zine formatted blog for Artists and I think the talent on this site is exceptional. The site is completely free to use and allows your own coding and formatting, with easy publication tools, which gets your finished Zines out to a world wide audience very quickly and easily.

The variety of publications and quality of artwork and resources makes this site a must join for any artist or craft worker. The other great thing about this site is that being able to access page code to add your own personalized style will enable you to express yourself in a most unique way.

So What's So Great About Zazzle?

Zazzle is an excellent global test market for artists who would like to show their works to thousands by creating products such as T-shirts, Shoes, Posters, Stamps,Shirts, Skate boards and more. Firstly one of the best things is to run your own store of products on Zazzle is free.

The user interface that allows you to create products to me is very user friendly. If you are in-experienced with computer applications on the net then this site also provides you with detailed instruction on how to set up your artworks so that they will be reproduced at the highest quality.

Remember even if you are not an artist you can create your designs using the various swatches and elements provided with this interface.

One of the best things about this site is it enables you to show case your artworks to the world. Providing you with your own shop front, widget and other promotional tools. This enables you to have a very professional looking store that you can easily promote via email or refer interested potential customers.

Experiment, experiment and get involved with the community so you can gain some valuable feedback. Sometimes as an artist you can become a little starved for feedback, which can hinder your progress, so getting onto Zazzle with your artworks can greatly assist you with artwork as well as art based product development.

I know as an artist who has attempted to develop products before that Zazzle also takes away the huge costs and limitations that can occur if you are just trying to develop your product range with limited capital. When I have tried this process on my own I was limited to one or two products, limiting my artwork to about 4 designs at 1 color. So when I came across Zazzle I wondered where it had been 2 years ago as I would have greatly appreciated being able to develop online and have more options in creating my art based business. I would have been able to have my full range available plus the ability to apply it to more then one product and test market more extensively. Remember you can also produce your artwork as canvases and posters, which also extends this sites effectiveness.

Zazzle also enables free expression, enabling the artist or anyone to produce T-shirts or products for most purposes, if you are looking to advertise a club, business,political, community event or have something quirky that you would like to express then this is the site for you. Enabling the ability for the artist to add their own pricing and discounts easily is also fantastic as sometimes this can be a difficult thing for some artists to do.

So finally if you are an artist of any kind or if you have some creative desires that you wish to express then start with Zazzle and develop your art based business on a global level.

Create Your OpenZine

The main reason for me to be working online was the idea of getting more exposure for my work on a global level. I am self taught, I didn't have the opportunity to learn all the techniques required to work with a computer when I completed my degree in 1992.

For this reason it has been a longer journey. I still rue the fact that if I was able to learn a few more skills particularly when it comes to programing and using certain art based computer programs I may not have struggled so long as and artist.

Having said that the Internet now provides some interesting artist tools to skip some of these limitations enabling many more people to be able to create some very interesting art products and graphic online.

My blog will introduce some of these too you as well as assess others that are more well known. I will also discuss some of the promotional strategies that can be taken to get your artwork out to the world in a very professional way.

Working as an online artist has many learning curves and I'd like to introduce some of the more interesting sites that you can use to give your art promotion an excellent lift and give you the ability to even make some sales.
