ThinkGeek: Here at ThinkGeek were just wishing for a fully playable guitar built into a t-shirt when along came the Pixie of ROCK... she wailed with face melting guitar solo and *POOF* there it was in our hands... The Electronic Rock Guitar Shirt. We turned on the mini amp, cranked the volume to 11 and started to rock. As the Pixie explained, the Electronic Guitar Shirt is incredibly easy to play because each button on the neck is a major chord. She went on to mention how you can play dozens of classic rock songs with very little skill. However she warned us never to use the Guitar Shirt for evil lest, we are prepared to summon the Demon of Rock and duel to the death for musical supremacy.

The Munchausen Lego Kitchen is based around an Ikea island that has been outifftted with more than 20,000 Lego pieces. Not quite and afternoon in the playroom, the entrie process took the designers more than a week to complete. The results were well worth the effort, which gave way to a vast eye-catching mosiac.

A small inhaler and insulin powder created by the MannKind Corporation, a drug developer in Valencia, Calif., are before the Food and Drug Administration for marketing approval. The insulin powder, called Afresa, is inhaled into the lungs, dissolves there and then travels into the bloodstream.

Retained sponge incidents jeopardize hospital reputation and cause catastrophes for staff and patients. Today, one in every 1,000 to 1,500 intra-abdominal surgeries results in a sponge left behind in the patient. The SmartSponge System, the only RFID-based system currently on the market, has multiple components that interact with the RFID tags in its sponges.

An RFID tag smaller than a dime is securely embedded in each sponge to provide unique identification of the sponge, as well as other information about the sponge such as size, type, etc. As sponges come out of the field, they can go directly into the SmartBucket one at a time or in larger quantities. The SmartBucket quickly sorts and counts any combination of different sponge sizes and types that are discarded simultaneously.

Following the surgical procedure, the counts are reconciled. If there is a discrepancy in counts, the patient is then scanned with the SmartWand which quickly identifies any remaining sponges. A green light on the SmartWand handle confirms the wand is reading all the way through the patient to the surgical table. A red light illuminates if a sponge has been detected. Visual and audible notification is also provided on the display screen of the SmartBucket as well.

After all sponges are accounted for, the user retrieves a final report that can be printed automatically or sent to the hospital’s medical records system.

Inhabitat: The serene back-and-forth movement of a rocking chair is nothing if not relaxing. It can also be useful and productive, according to Rochus Jacob. The designer’s Murakami Chair, a winner in designboom’s Green Life competition, uses the kinetic energy produced by rocking to power an attached OLED lamp.

During the day, the Murakami chair stores energy in an on-board battery back. And in the evening, stored energy provides juice for the lamp.

According to Jacob, “I was looking for opportunities to generate energy through activities we naturally do. The final result is a rocking chair that enables the user to experience production and consumption of electricity in a gentle and rewarding way. An abstract process becomes tangible and eventually cultivates natural awareness. Complexity is covered by simplicity.”
