Engineers from weapons and defense research outfit Sandia National Laboratories are working on a bullet that can steer itself after it is fired, homing in on laser-designated targets with the help of embedded electronics. The other geniuses working on invisibility need to go on overdrive.

The 4 inch-long bullet was invented by Red Jones and Brian Kast, who aside from being engineers are also hunters. So if you hate this tech, blame the game that they couldn’t hit. Although to say that this is overcompensating would be an understatement: the high-tech ammo has an optical sensor, an 8-bit CPU that handles “guidance and control electronics”and electromagnetic actuators that control its fins.

The bullet is meant to be used with smooth-bore firearms, i.e. ones that don’t have grooves inside their barrels. The grooves give spin to normal bullets to help them fly straight, but since this bullet literally has a mind of its own it doesn’t need the spin. The screenshot above shows the path left by a prototype fitted with an LED, proving that its electronics and battery are not destroyed when the bullet is fired. That is one weird trajectory.

Sandia’s press release also said that the bullet’s flight gets steadier with distance, so it’s better suited for long-range targets. The current prototype isn’t up to the U.S. military’s standards in terms of velocity, but its inventors are confident that they can make it go faster by using customized gunpowder. Intel’s Rosepoint chip combines a digital WiFi radio with a CPU

Researchers at Intel have come up with a way to make WiFi faster and more energy efficient.

It’s a chip called Rosepoint, and although it’s just a research project today, it could show up in mobile phones and laptop computers by the middle of the decade.

Rosepoint represents a breakthrough that Intel engineers have been hammering away at for years. They’ve been able to digitize little blocks of radio components in the past — things like amplifiers and synthesizers — but now they’ve managed to put a digital 2.4 GHz WiFi radio on a chip, right next to one of their low-power Atom central processing units (CPUs).

Building analog WiFi chips is a bit of an art. Radio Frequency (RF) chip designers build complex, customized circuits that operate on a continuum of voltages. The problem is that it’s often tough to shrink these analog designs down to the tiny scale that’s possible with today’s cutting-edge chipmaking processes.

Not so with digital RF chips, such as the one Intel’s just built. Digital RF chips are simpler. They have just two voltage levels and can be shrunk down much more easily whenever Intel’s researchers come up with a way to make chip parts smaller.

That’s good news for WiFi users. When Intel’s chips start to hit the market they will have “state of the art power efficiency” and superior signal quality, says Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner. And things will only get better as Intel shrinks things down. “With a digital approach to radio, you can bring the benefits of Moore’s law to RF and radio circuits,” he says.

Intel wants to build a digital cellular radio chip too, in the “not too distant future,” Rattner says.

That’s going to move Intel into closer competition with RF chip companies such as Texas Instruments and Broadcom, says Kevin Krewell an analyst with semiconductor consulting firm The Linley Group.

In the long run, that could also mean better phones for everyone. “Ultimately it would reduce the chip count on the cell phone, which would reduce the cost and the complexity of manufacturing of the phone and improve battery life,” Krewell says.

But it’s not easy to do one of these wireless system-on-a-chip designs. Wireless radios and CPUs aren’t exactly ideal roommates. Both parties emit radiation that can mess with the other, in the same way that a calculator near an AM radio can distort sound. “This radiation seeps into the RF module and corrupts the data,” says Hossein Alavi, director of Intel’s Radio Integration Lab. “The closer they are, the more interference is going to go to them.”

Radio wave emissions can also mess with the microprocessor, Alavi adds.

To fix this, Intel has had to come up with noise canceling and radiation-shielding techniques for the chips.

Intel has even worked out techniques for putting radio antennas on-chip, but it isn’t talking about them for another year or two.

Sometimes I wonder why people use the phrase “when pigs fly” when they try to convey that something is impossible. Shouldn’t they say something like “when humans fly,” since scientists could one day genetically modify pigs to give them wings? You know, since it’s less likely for these scientists to do their experiments on human beings. Or have they already succeeded in doing so?

Pictures don’t lie, but you aren’t really seeing real people flying around New York City. And while I was hoping they might be real people with jetpacks, they’re actually remote-controlled planes built in the shape of human beings. The R/C humans were made to fly around various landmarks in the Big Apple, including the Statue of Liberty.

They were thought up by the marketing people behind the upcoming movie, Chronicle. And even though I have never heard of the movie until now, this ploy makes me want to go see it. Just because.

No, it doesn’t shoo away people nor will it magically fill in the background once you crop out a person or two. What it does is initially take a burst of shots in rapid succession. It then compares all the shots and identifies which subjects are moving (aka. the people to remove) and which ones are not (aka. the subject of the photos.)

The moving objects will be highlighted and presented to you in the next screen, where you’ll also be given the option to remove them. The final result is a composite photo showing just you and a distraction-less background.

It’s creator, Scalado, plans on showing off a working version at Mobile World Congress at the end of this month. Though it looks promising, Remove is still in the prototype stage, so you might have to wait a few more months before its public release.

The idea behind Gymbot is that in 2020 humans will still be mostly fat and lazy. You will need a Robocop type figure to whip your flabby butt into shape. If you leave it to humans themselves, they won’t get fit, and it’ll be like Wall-E in real life.

Gymbot is a concept robot was designed by Massimo Battaglia of givingshape. The robot will basically be on your case 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Think of him as more of a drill Sergeant overseeing your life. This humanoid robot features articulated joints that mimic human movement, speed and precision. It is equipped with a 3D video camera with a scanner and thermal camera and using a microphone, it will measure your heart rate and blood pressure, while it ignores your pleas for a rest.

This personal trainer ‘bot will also calculate your body fat index, which is just what none of us want to hear about. The touchscreen on Gymbot’s chest will show you the exercises to do. It seems like a lot of trouble and a huge expense to get you to exercise, but it will probably make some company rich someday.
