Subject: I hate to say it
Posted: Thu Mar 18, 2010 12:50 am (GMT 0)
I've been an avid windows mobile user since the very first smartphone, and from what i've read over the past couple of days, im sorry to have to say (in my most sarcastic of all dragons den impressions) "Great product but you don't need my money, so I'm out."

We challenged, nudged and prodded MS for the last 2-3 years to get a grip on the rate of development on WM, and the best they could do was copy the iPhone and all it's foibles - what are they hoping to achieve? dare i say, no self respecting iPhone or Android user is going to ever switch to WM, for reasons i shouldn't have to go into. And imho they're about to loose everyone that has loved WM phone in their pocket. So who exactly is going to benefit here MS? who will want your phone? what makes it better than the others? (hint: not-you, no-one, nothing at all)

You brought us the smartphone (and inspired this website!), since then we've had high hopes, we had a passion, the iPhone came, the Android came, we we're loyal, now we're gone.

Way to go MS, wipe the slate clean - good luck!

I'm looking forward to an android powered phone.

How? The iPhone is a massive success. Microsoft are literally mimicing the iPhone's history and feature set word for word. WM is a OS for techies, WP7S and OS for numpties, sorry newbies.

I'll likely hate it but it will do much better than WM has.

A "smart linking" system will let you click on numbers and either call it or add it to your contacts. This system should be an intelligent link between what you might want to do with certain bits of information. Will it be in apps you download from the Marketplace too ? Let's hope so - sometimes I want to copy bits of an email and send them as a Tweet. Sometimes I want to trim bits of a web-page and add them into the Mobile Office apps. Can I do that? Well, Todd admits that they try "to focus on what the core use cases were", but there may be some who "won't be happy with some of those decisions". So, no. Perhaps not then.

I'm sorry Microsoft. We've got some pretty big issues here. Yes, the OS needed a reboot. It was well past it's sell-by date. We've accepted the fact that previous apps won't work, we're gradually coming around to the fact that multi-tasking isn't there and that you're going to take more control over the experience. But, and this is a big "but", the lack of copy and paste is something we all laughed at when the iPhone appeared in 2007.

"Ha! That iPhone hasn't even got copy and paste!", screamed the Windows Mobile owners.

Three years (and several months) later, is it wise to release a new OS that does everything we hate about the iPhone? You can't side-load apps and games - they only come from one shop, the Marketplace. Oh, and that Marketplace can remotely revoke app licences. That means that MS can yank the plug on anything that could harm the OS.. or anything that isn't "good" for the store.

On February 15th Microsoft revealed more than just a new OS. This is an entire change of direction. The "geeky" users, the "power" users and perhaps even the business users are, at least in my opinion, no longer the target audience. This is Microsoft following the iPhone "how to" guide. This will be an approachable OS, one which will do pretty much all the things that most people want in a nice, safe, constantly updated environment.

Links - Copy and Paste details (cnet.com) - App Kill Switch (engadget.com)

Publish Date:

Wed, 17 Mar 2010 23:26:48 +0000

The more details I hear about Windows Phone 7 Series (what a terrible name btw), the less I want anything to do with it. I've been a WM user for years and currently love my TP2. I guess I'll be hanging on to the 6.5 compatible phones until they officially die due to lack of support and software. Then I'll have to switch to a Android or just a plain dumb phone with my laptop. Oh well. The end of an era.

Andriod has already embarrassed winmo totally and shamelessly!

Balmer has his head firmly stuck in the sand ( or shud I say sumwhere else).

Jobs is just a prime t0sser who cant think for himself! Steal someone elses idea and then steal their claim to innovation as well!

Wise up Steve(Ballmer) - even a 4 year old could tell ur developers that WM7 is destined to fail unless you they get a finger out and start developing (never mind trying to innovate).

Jobs - Go steal someone elses ideas!

As stated over 2 months ago (even after your patheticWM7 announcement which has fooled no-one) - Winmo is DEAD!!!! - Long live Android.

Winmo's ass has been well and truely kicked by it and if I must admit by iPhone as well, amongst others and despite trying to pretend there is a will to make it live again within Microsoft it is quite apparrant there isnt. Even a blind man could see that.

Is the title of this thread not enough to convince even the most cynical. Winmo7 dont even have the basic features - nevermind the showstealers!

my initial reaction was to come on and laugh out loud at this announcement. When I transitioned to iphone, I was berated and many on this forum were truly vicious about the cut and paste issue.

oh how I smile now.

however, I think this is actually a sign that MS still hasn't got WM7 right. I mean, for a phone targeted for all markets, how could they not have this ready? My guess is that they're behind on the development and that doesn't bode well for WinMob fans.

Either way, the 4G iphone's going to embarrass WM7 and nothing I've seen so far is going to temp me back to winmob/ Andriod in the immediate future.
_________________
www.iphonebang.com

Did anyone watch Ballmers Presentation of the WPS7? He truly sucks!! His comments are not thought through, his stupidity is unbelievable and is just a king size prat !

Gates is still "in the know", and here is a recent interview for all to read... It is also good to read he confirms that the iPhone was well ahead of what M$ was doing!

HTC has out done themselfs again, htc sense makes this phone. with all i am hearing about the wm7 i am certain to be avoiding it at all costs in the future im more than happy to run with my 2yr contract then i've no doubt i will b jumping ship 2 android aswell. i use copy & paste all the time! the final straw, RIP WM!!

i was recently debating weather 2 hold out for wm7 release before i upgraded to a new contract. in the end i decided 2 go for the HD2 on virgin. i was very unsure of virgin but knew the HD2 would b a winner. i can say that after about 10 yrs of WM phones on orange i am the happiest i have ever been HD2 is brilliant and so is the virgin mobile network!

I use WM because it gives me the flexibility I desire. If I wanted somebody else to dictate what functionality I can have, I wouldn't have shifted from Ericsson phones all those years ago. They do exactly what they're supposed to do, phone and other Web 2.0 junk that only the sheep of the world really care about.

WM6.5, I'm sticking with you baby.

I have a sneaky feeling that with the security and features of 3GS, and with the forthcoming announcement of the latest iPhone, it may well persuade Business users to switch.

Time of course will tell. I very much suspect they will not switch due to the "lack" of C&P though. Have to be good Business justifications that a feature as small as this could impact their production !

Time will tell though Lets see what happens.....

Let them! I dont really care - iPhone does EXACTLY what I need it do (far better than WM and well ahead of Android which is what I did plan to move to!), and its been down to Apple's Multi-touch and Googles incentives of Android to show M$ that they are severely flawed. In fact, you could call it "Catch-Up" if you like.

You may want to scan the forums here, as there was another post about the Upgrade for HD2 users, and I quoted by saying that there was no chance it would "officially" be supported or done! Remember, hardware is nothing without good decent software.
Have to say I am with Vodafone (always have been) and its been great!
I guess its easy to blame a phone for poor signal - But O2 really should have been there to support you really.

That was part of the "exclusive" reason Apple chose O2 - Better Network fit for the device.

Just like M$ always providing the need for a Stylus! Apple showed this is NOT the case! Why the hell would we want one in this day and age?

I have to say that I frequently use copy/paste - to clip from websites or documents and send as emails and text. It all depends how you use your phone... for some, it;s an essential function.

As for the stylus... I really miss having precise control. I do (did) a lot of drawing/sketching out of ideas, (very) quick jotting down of notes, etc... and drawing/painting with a stylus is a better experience than doing so using mouse on a PC/Mac. You just can't do it with your finger. Secondly, although I'm sure I'm in the minority here, I could get fast accurate text using WM's handwriting recognition. (I must say that Swype is a good alternative, though.) Thirdly, you don't get fingerprints from a stylus - it's great to have it as an option anyway. The current crop of capacitive styluses are a waste of time.

I had an iPhone when the 3Gs came in... wouldn't work in my village (anywhere) - possibly down to O2 in part, but neighbours had working O2 phones. O2 were rubbish when it came to support though, so I'm happy to blame them. But, as a phone, I found the iPhone awful - loads of dropped calls (in good signal areas), false button presses in-call etc. The HD2 is a proper phone, and I've had no such problems. I loved the design of most apps - Apple does seem to attract more design-oriented developers and great quirky app ideas - but the whole thing lacked substance. I was completely bored with it after a couple of weeks, and quite happy to have the opportunity to send it back, HD2 has been a frustration at times (getting everything the way I want it), but it has in no way been any disappointment.

The next exciting thing though - Android I think.

This seems really stupid of Microsoft. I don't use copy and paste all the time, but sometimes it's quite useful. Leaving this out is a real shame and makes me further question WP7.
I wouldn't bet against the HD2 getting a hacked upgrade to WP7, but at the moment I don't see the point of pretty much downgrading from WM 6.5 to WP7 when I'm pretty sure people can skin 6.5 to look & feel the same given time. I'd give it a go if they do it though!

I'd like to hear what plans Microsoft have for WP6x, as they said they'd keep it going in parallel with WP7. Could be interesting (though probably won't be).
_________________
HTC Pro2

Subject: Reluctantly leaving WM
Posted: Wed Mar 17, 2010 11:12 am (GMT 0)
Topic Replies: 27

I've had WM phones since the start - from HTC Canary to HD2. Personally (and quite aside from of all the forecast shortcomings and omissions in WM7), I wasn't besotted as most of the press seems to have been by the big blocky interface (KLM-style... check out msmobiles.com). Why does it require 10 percent of the screen to tell me I have 2 missed calls (doesn't even say who they were from) and another 10 percent to say I have 3 texts, and another to say how many emails there are. I wear glasses, but I'm not otherwise visually impaired to that degree. There were complaints that the large HD2 screen made the big HTC clock too big - well at least it's the most important function of a display when you first switch it on... the huge waste of real estate on WM7 is just dumb and pointless. I see the ONLY advantage of WM7 as rewriting the core of the operating system more efficiently to take advantage of new processors and get the best out of batteries, add in support for games and 3D etc... But, along the way to abandon so many important functions is plain stupid. Look at what HTC did to make WM6.5 so much more useable (Microsoft made an appalling mess of the job)... WM7 looks and feels like something thrown together to impress a bunch of gullible hacks inebriated in anticipation of something radical and new. ANd now... no copy/paste, no multitasking, no customisation... I have no regrets in getting the HD2 (and being tied into a 2yr deal with T-Mobile), because it's currently the best phone, and does/will do everything I need (including games thanks to FPSECE Playstation emu). Then, when the contract ends, I have no doubt at all that Android will be mature and brilliant, while Microsoft will have transformed WM into a glorified media player for simpletons.

I am sure that beneath the dumb

C&P - I suspect there is going to be a linking type alternative. And if this has been done by design, then you have 2 choices:

1) Accept it and spend more money on a WPS7 Device
2) Move off and buy a device from Google or Apple.

My feeling is they probably do not see the need for it. I guess time will tell, but for all those Die-Hard WM fans out there.... Do not drop it just because it does not have a C&P feature ..... DROP IT because its so flawed that another branded Mobile OS can do MORE than what your WM can!

And that is why I dropped this sh*te and moved to iPhone!
Suicide or what! As previously commented - why dont they bow out now before they really embarrass themselves with yet another "mediocre" product. Leave the windows mobile product to someone like HTC who CAN give the users what they want

Why would they drop something so fundamental? That takes the phone back years. Android is definitely the future for me!

Well I suppose I class myself as a 'Microsoft Fan', but I think I will be dumping Windows Mobile when my current contract runs out.

I have a sim free HD2 at present, have lived with all the crap since its launch day although it is quite stable at present.

I may as well join the Android brigade!

Mmm all those Windows Mobile users that would post on forums about the iPhone not having copy and paste. Oh dear! That's all i can say. I'm really looking forward to Windows Phone 7 Series BUT saying that it does seem like they are going along the iPhone route when they could of been innovative.

Android users are going to love this to! Even they can copy and paste as far as im aware!

It will actually be interesting to see how often Microsoft actually update their windows phone 7 series operating system.
Deja vu anyone (Hope I spelt that right) !

Think of it as a new version of Windows .... dont rush out and buy it ... wait for the Service Packs to fix issues and missing features to be added into the even "later" generation WM7PS mobile Communication devices !

LOL - So glad I jumped off the WM Platform !!
There again, maybe this is due to the fact the "Product" is not ready? Maybe you WM guys need to move on and forget about C&P? I mean, I never really used it that much anyhow!
Maybe a feature? Would not worry about it too much !
But rant away
