This is one of the rare moments where I get a glance of myself as I am.
It's hard to recognize yourself after some years lived abroad with no reference whatsoever of your previous life.
The whole time I feel like an empty box, as if I forgot to pack my soul with me on the way to this adventure, either I lost it on one of my first exploration of the millions of possibilities of a new start, a new life.
Too concentrated on what I wanted to be I lost who I was and now it's hard to get it back. Some days it feels impossible. As if I were watching someone else's life.

Exam season is having a very negative effect on my job. Being the only secretary around the office things start to go wrong the more attention I divert from my office duties to my study.

This has a bad impact on myself: I feel a worse student (for the reduced time I get to spend on my books compared to my full-time students classmates), a worse employee (for the mistakes my colleagues have to bear with), a worse wife (I also have less time for my husband, for our dog and the apartment), a worse friend (I forgot a friend's birthday party a couple of days ago and felt so ashamed because it's so not me), let's say a whole much worse version of me.

I enclose some autumn pictures I took on a short (and very cold) dog walking trip to the park.

I think it's official.

No one has dared declaring the end of summer, but some should be brave and accept reality. I step up.

I welcome you, Autumn 2010, by wearing boots for the first time in the past four months!

Yesterday, getting off the metro, I noticed a girl trying very hard to keep a summer mood: she looked very stubborn in shorts and flip flops under the pouring rain.

I love autumn, but I cannot tolerate the Danish winter - last one has been remarkably harsh - so I decided that to make it to Spring 2011 I should quote Keats as if it was a mantra, as a part of my Winter Survival Kit.

If Winter comes can Spring be far behind?

Credo che ormai sia ufficiale.

Nessuno ha osato sbilanciarsi decretando la fine dell'estate, ma qualcuno dovrebbe trovare il coraggio di accettare la realtà.

E qui entro in gioco io.

Autunno 2010, io e i miei stivaletti (tornati ai miei piedi dopo mesi di latitanza) ti diamo il benvenuto!

Ieri, scendendo dalla metropolitana, ho notato una ragazza che cercava disperatamente di mantenere un'atmosfera estiva: aveva un'aria molto testarda nei suoi pantaloncini e le infradito da spiaggia mentre veniva sommersa dal terzo o quarto acquazzone della giornata.

Amo l'autunno, ma una cosa che non sopporto è l'inverno danese - l'ultimo in particolare è stato davvero duro - perciò ho deciso che, come parte del mio Kit di Sopravvivenza Invernale dovrò recitare Keats come un mantra se voglio arrivare alla primavera 2011.

E se arriva l'inverno, la primavera non può essere lontana

Someone seems to have decided that Copenhagen doesn't need anymore sun for this year. I might considering investing in an ark very soon, if things keep looking like this!

On the other hand I shouldn't complain too much lately: I will finally start university next week and I have been really looking forward to this (despite the fact that I already spent 1.700 DKK in books for the first quarter only).

Life is getting very expensive for us lately if you consider our car broke down twice since the guarantee expired (three months ago), I am starting to believe they install a timer on cars to make sure things start to explode after the expiration date.

My husband is also back to work after a 2 weeks break, so our family routine is now back to normal, to the great joy of my dog who was surely missing his 8-hours nap.

On the way to work today I discovered a new song on my mp3 (I often forget what I have saved on it) and found it incredibly beautiful, so I want to share it with you while I am here pretending I have something to do in my office and dreaming of a new, exciting job.

Qualcuno lassù sembra aver deciso che quest'anno abbiamo avuto abbastanza sole e per un po' non se ne riparla. Si potrebbe quasi quasi prendere in considerazione di costruire un'arca.

Comunque non posso lamentarmi troppo: finalmente inizierò l'università la settimana prossima ed è davvero da tanto che aspetto questo momento (anche se l'inizio non è stato proprio soft: i libri per il primo trimestre mi sono costati "solo" 1.700 DKK).

Ultimamente abbiamo avuto un po' di spese, specialmente se si considera che abbiamo dovuto portare a riparare la nostra macchina ben 2 volte negli ultimi tre mesi (giusto alla scadenza della garanzia, precisione svizzera!)

Inizio a pensare che le costruiscono col timer.

Mio marito è tornato al lavoro dopo due settimane di meritate ferie, quindi la nostra routine famigliare è tornata alla normalità, per la gioia del nostro cane, a cui sicuramente sono mancate le sue penniche di 8 ore mentre siamo in ufficio.

Mentre andavo al lavoro oggi ho scoperto una nuova canzone sul mio lettore mp3 (ogni tanto mi dimentico cosa ci ho caricato) e l'ho trovata davvero bella, perciò voglio condividerla con voi mentre sono qui a far finta di lavorare e sognando... un nuovo lavoro!

Tasting Italy in Copenhagen

Copenhagen counts an almost infinite number of "Italian" restaurants.
Some of them are authentic, some of them aren't: beware of embarassing spelling mistakes: run as fast as you can from any "PIZZARIA" and when in doubt make sure to go carefully through their menu.
I was just disgusted when I read of a calzone containing spaghetti... I guess some genius was just trying too hard that day:

-So... Italian restaurants should have pizza...
-...and spaghetti...
-Great idea: let's bake spaghetti inside the pizza!

Don't get me wrong: I am the most tolerant person, but please don't mess Italian food up like that (and keep your ketchup bottle far away from your pasta).

But I must say that it is indeed possible to find a good number of top-notch Italian restaurants here if you want to treat yourself.
A couple of weeks ago I had a friend visiting and wanted to take her out for dinner in town - this is how we discovered Vespa.
And it was a lucky find for we enjoyed a delicious dinner in the heart of Copenhagen (the queen's residence is just around the corner) in a very lively atmosphere!
We had a 4 courses dinner, very simple yet excellent both in taste and look:

Panna cotta

The price was also very student-friendly: 250 DKK (34 EUR / 44 USD) for this menu (wine not included).

I really think I will show up there again soon.

Copenhagen conta un numero quasi infinito di ristoranti italiani.

Alcuni sono autentici, altri meno, già le insegne molto spesso dicono tutto: "PIZZARIA", per non parlare dei menu.

Sono rimasta davvero disgustata quando ho letto su un menu di un calzone farcito di spaghetti... non c'è che dire, davvero un'idea geniale:

-Allora... facciamo un ristorante italiano perciò facciamo delle pizze

-...e della pasta...

-Che idea: una pizza con dentro la pasta!

Forse esagero, ma una cosa che davvero non sopporto è quando storpiano il cibo italiano cosí (e per favore tenete la bottiglia di ketchup ben lontana dal vostro piatto di pasta).

C'è comunque da dire che i ristoranti italiani di prima scelta non mancano.

Un'amica è passata a trovarmi a Copenhagen un paio di settimane fa e abbiamo deciso di andare a cena in centro - cosí abbiamo scoperto Vespa.

Ed è stata una scoperta molto fortunata, perché abbiamo passato un bellissima serata in questo locale molto vivace.

Abbiamo assaggiato un menu da 4 portate, molto semplice ma dall'aspetto davvero eccellente, per non parlare del gusto:

Devo anche dire che il prezzo era ottimo, soprattutto per me che presto torno ad essere una studentessa: 250 DKK (34 EUR / 44 USD) per il menu (vino escluso).

Credo che ci ritornerò sicuramente, e anche abbastanza presto!

Living the fairy tale

Four years ago I had no idea that I would be living in Denmark today.

My idea of Denmark back then resembled a lot the Kingdom of Far Far Away as seen on Shrek.

I mean, after all it was Hans Christian Andersen that invented each one of them: Thumbelina, the little Mermaid, the princess and the pea.

Then of course there was the fact that Denmark is the oldest monarchy in Europe.

Coming from a nation that kicked out their royal family long before I was even born, the concept of monarchy it's something completely new and definitely “exotic” to me... somehow a foreign extravagance. It is therefore very exotic to me now to share the Danish royal family's country, it is something I occasionally need to be reminded of.

The existence of the queen and her family is actually something that cannot be left unnoticed if you only consider the number of pages published all over the country about them: it turns out that when it comes about selling magazines the royal family definitely beats Brangelina!

I realize that this is of course the case in many countries today, it still is very different from what we're used to see in Italy. The most we have seen of our former royals on the press lately has been this.

(It would be unfair to say that they don't try hard though: Emanuele Filiberto Di Savoia has been awarded second prize at glamorous Sanremo festival).

It is therefore with a little astonishment that I walk through Amalienborg square and try to convince myself that yes, they do keep a queen in there!

But mostly, when I think about the monarchy I don't think about the queen herself, the royal family, etc. I see the small details: the stamps, the change of the guard, the birthday of the royals printed on every calendar and the littly symbol indicating "by appointment of the Danish Royal House".

Or I find myself looking at the royal sign camping over the Danish post offices and bakeries: I'm sure they have exactly the same in Far Far Away – what do you think?

Quattro anni fa non avrei mai pensato di ritrovarmi a vivere in Danimarca.

All'epoca la Danimarca che avevo in testa somigliava molto al Regno di Molto Molto Lontano di Shrek.

Insomma, non che avessi tutti i torti: dopotutto Pollicina, la Sirenetta e la principessa sul pisello sono tutte creature di Hans Christian Andersen!

Poi c'è ovviamente da considerare che la Danimarca è la più antica monarchia d'Europa.

Ecco, arrivando da un paese che cacciò i suoi reali molti anni prima che io fossi nata il concetto di monarchia è qualcosa di completamente nuovo e sicuramente "esotico"... quanto una delle varie stravaganze straniere. Ed è davvero esotico vivere in un "regno", se non avessi qualcosa a ricordarmelo me ne dimenticherei in men che non si dica.

E sono in tanti davvero a ricordarmelo: già solo guardando le prime pagine delle riviste che si trovano ovunque: e scopro cosí che la famiglia reale si aggiudica più copertine di Brangelina!

Mi rendo conto che è probabilmente la norma in diversi paesi, ma sicuramente non in Italia. Dal suo ritorno in patria la famiglia reale si è resa nota principalmente per questo.

(Senza dimenticare l'indimenticabile (!) performance di Emanuele Filiberto Di Savoia al festival di Sanremo).

Ogni volta che mi trovo a passare davanti da Amalienborg gaccio sempre fatica a convincermi che sì, lì dentro ci abita una regina!

Ma quando penso alla monarchia danese raramente mi capita di pensare alla regina, alla famiglia reale, ecc. Mi vengono sempre in mente i piccoli dettagli: i francobolli, il cambio della guarda, il compleanno dei reali stampato su tutti i calendari ed il simbolino che indica "by appointment of the Danish Royal House".

O ancora mi ritrovo a fissare i simbolini delle panetterie, o quello delle poste: sono sicura che ce l'abbiano anche nel Regno di Molto Molto Lontano, non pensate?

It is funny that I should read this Ansa on Corriere della Sera but didn't see the news on Danish press yet.

Our beloved Little Mermaid is now on holiday in Shangai and the town of Copenhagen has apparently decided to "hire" replacement for her. Candidates should contact a dedicated office and will then be free to perform as they like on the rock that normally hosts the statue.

According to Ansa this initiative is expected to start on August 2nd and will go on for about three weeks, closing on August 23rd celebrating the "best performer".

I have some ideas about who could be good for the role...

And you? Who would you like to see up there?

È strano trovarsi a leggere questa notizia sul Corriere della Sera visto che non ce n'è ancora traccia sulla stampa danese.

La nostra cara Sirenetta è in "vacanza" a Shangai e sembra che il comune di Copenhagen abbia deciso di trovare un sostituto a rimpiazzarla. I candidati dovrebbero mettersi in contatto con un ufficio dedicato e potranno esibirsi come preferiscono sullo scoglio che normalmente ospita la Sirenetta.

Secondo l'Ansa l'iniziativa dovrebbe partire il 2 Agosto e proseguire per circa tre settimane, con chiusura prevista per il 23 Agosto, giorno in cui si festeggierà il miglior artista.

Personalmente ho qualche idea su chi sarebbe adatto al ruolo...

E voi? Chi vorreste vedere sullo scoglio?

Slightly over two years ago, a victorious smile on my face, I packed my dearest things, wrapped myself into three wool layers (that will turn out to be more than excessive) and took the first low-cost plane I could find.

Back then there were so many things I didn't know, but what I did know was that this was probably the most important step of my life so far. And I didn't need Forbes to inform me that Denmark was (and apparently still is) the happiest place on Earth.

In my pockets I had enough money for a couple of months, my beautifully useless Bachelor and there, waiting to pick me up at the airport, was the most wonderful guy.

I was flying to Copenheaven.

Poco più di due anni fa, con un sorriso vittorioso stampato sulla faccia, misi in valigia le mie cose più care, mi infagottai in tre strati di lana (rivelatisi in seguito leggermente eccessivi) e presi il primo volo low-cost a disposizione.

Allora c'erano tante cose che non sapevo, ma quello che sapevo era che si trattava probabilmente della decisione più importante della mia vita. E non avevo bisogno che Forbes mi ricordasse che la Danimarca era la nazione più felice del mondo (e sembra sia ancora così).

Avevo in tasca i risparmi sufficienti per sopravvivere un paio di mesi, la mia meravigliosa quanto inutile laurea triennale e lì, ad aspettarmi all'aereoporto, c'era un ragazzo speciale.

Stavo volando verso Copenheaven.
