Income tax returns filing deadline today: A list of dos and don'ts for last minute tax-filers

The last date for filing income tax returns (ITR) is today.

Here are a few steps for those who have not filed their returns yet:

If you don’t know how to file your ITR: Don't worry, it really takes less than 20 minutes to do so.

(1) Gather all your papers and documents, Here’s a handy list:

*PAN card
*Aadhaar card
*Form 16
*Bank Account details
*Investment details viz LIC, PPF, NSC, NPS, Health *Insurance, and the like
*Donations receipts
*House rent receipts
*Home loan details and loan certificates
*Medical expenditure receipt on self or any other dependent
*Tuition Fee receipts of up to 2 children

(2) Choose the website: You can either chose to do it directly at the Indian Income Tax website or you can choose an online tax portal. There are a number of portals out there choose the one that has been around for a while, and automatically populates your ITR form with data when you upload soft-copies of your documents. Life becomes easy with such facility, as you don’t have to manually feed the data. Some portals use a simple question-answer format, where you can answer the questions and your relevant I-T forms get filled automatically.

(3) Portals will e -file your return and also get the ITR form in a digital format: Upload Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) to complete the e-filing of your Income Tax Return. If you've digitally signed your ITR form using the digital signature available on the portal, your e-filing of returns is done. If you do not have a DSC then you’ll get an ITR-V form. You will receive an acknowledgment from them called ITR-V. If you have linked your Aadhaar to PAN, e-verification taken less than 10 seconds. The option is available on your dashboard.

(4) Download the ITR -V acknowledgment
Take a print out in black and white and sign the form in blue ink. Signing the form in blue is an important step. Once you are done, post this to the income tax department in Bangalore. The address is available on all portals. Do this within 120 days of e-filing the Income Tax Return Form. Read this to verify ITR with a code and Net Banking

Make sure that while you are filing ITR you keep the following important things in mind.

Do not choose the wrong form, Here’s a quick update on which form to use this year.

ITR 1
This is for people with,
* Income from salary/ pension.
* Income from one house property.
* Income from other sources (interest, etc)
Keep in mind as per the new rules, if your income is above Rs 50 lakh, this is not the form.

ITR 2
This is for people who have:
* Income from salary/pension
* Income from house property (income can be from more than one house property)
* Income from capital gains/loss on sale of investments/property (both short term and long term)
* Agricultural income more than Rs 5,000
* Income from other sources (lottery wins, legal gambling wins)
* Income of a person as a partner in a firm (note that, there’s a change this year - instead of ITR form 3, you now have to fill ITR 2)
* Foreign assets

ITR 3
Use this form if you:
* Are an individual or HUF with income from proprietary business or profession
* Have income from house property
* Have income from salary, pension, and other sources

Keep in mind that you don’t give to fill this form if you have presumptive taxation.

Don’t forget to mention Aadhaar: When it comes to filing your returns, make sure you mention it on the form. It’s compulsory if you have an Aadhaar card. You can write the application number if you have applied for Aadhaar.

Filing multiple ITRs for multiple Form 16s: Also make sure you submit all the relevant Form 16s. If your past employer has deducted tax too, there's a good possibility you might qualify for a refund.

Failing to claim deductions: One very common mistake is failing to claim tax deduction under Section 80 TTA. According to this section, savings account interest income up to Rs 10,000 will get a tax deduction.

Axis Bank buys Freecharge for Rs 385 cr

Axis Bank on Thursday said it had acquired payments wallet FreeCharge in an all-cash deal for Rs 385 crore. The purchase will help the lender enhance its digital banking services and tap into a larger customer pool. “The whole purpose is to leverage the agile innovate culture of a start-up and combine it with the trust factor of a bank. It can be best achieved by having an independent entity,” Axis Bank MD and CEO Shikha Sharma said. Sharma added that the acquisition was a strategic fit for the bank and would help create an agile technology platform to service digital customers. “The challenge is to leverage the strength of the two organizations to do something which is uniquely different and unique in the market place,” she said. Jairam Sridharan, chief financial officer, Axis Bank, said the acquisition would help augment the bank’s digital capability and execution capacity. “You will see an instant doubling of the Axis customer base with the transaction,” Sridharan said. The lender has bought a 100% stake in FreeCharge Payment Technologies and Accelyst Solutions.

The two constitute the digital payments business of Jasper Infotech, which runs e-commerce marketplace Snapdeal.com. Axis Bank, the country’s third largest private sector bank, has around 20 million savings deposit customers while FreeCharge has more than 50 million customers. The bank has a 10% market share in the mobile banking space. “FreeCharge entrenches us in the digital payment landscape. It enhances our reach in a new customer segment which is digital, which is mobile first, which is relatively young, and it creates a platform for us to distribute our digital products and service,” Sridharan said at a press conference.

The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and it is expected to conclude by the end of September. It is expected the acquisition would become a value creator in the next two to three years. Axis Bank said it would retain and leverage the FreeCharge brand since it has a strong resonance with the target audience. It would also retain all the 200 employees of the company. FreeCharge would most likely remain an independent entity within the bank if the regulators approve the structure, it added.

In 2015, e-commerce marketplace Snapdeal had acquired FreeCharge for about Rs 2,400 crore, making it one of the largest deals in the consumer internet space in India at that time. Shares of Axis Bank closed at Rs 523.60 each, down 0.99% from the previous close.

Government’s new app-based taxi service to take on Ola & Uber could offer these benefits

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways hinted that government is working on introducing mobile app based taxi services which will increase the employment opportunity and will also support small/medium scale cab providers.

Mobile app based cab service has seen a double digit growth over last two years and looks like the government of India might be the next new player to take on the likes of Ola and Uber. Seeing a big opportunity to increase employment and support small/medium scale cab operators’ government of India is planning to introduce a taxi-booking app, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Monday. He also added that “this idea to introduce app based cab services is still at the primary stage but we are working on it seriously”. If the reports are to be believed then this plan will allow commuters to choose the mode of travel and will include two-wheelers taxis and electric four-wheelers. “The government platform will help get more people employment opportunities,” Nitin Gadkari, India’s minister for road transport and highways, was reported as saying by the Economic Times newspaper. The ride-hailing market in India has generated over $10 billion. The ministry is also trying to implement a new law which seeks to bring taxi aggregators under Motor Vehicles Act. If implemented, then every taxi provider company including the ones owned by various state governments will have to follow the guidelines fixed by the government while issuing licenses to operate.

While more details on this are awaited, we do believe that this will increase the safety aspects while commuting. The Indian auto-industry will be benefited by this move as the pan-India roll out of app-based taxis will eventually result in an increase in monthly sales of vehicles especially cars as the employment goes up. However, profit margins to the drivers and ease to get loans to buy the vehicles will play a crucial role for this idea to be successful.

Various state governments have already tried to enter the ride-sharing market by introducing various mobile applications. Delhi government had launched the PoochO driver app in 2015 which allowed the commuters to book taxi and auto-rickshaw in Delhi/NCR. Many former Ola and Uber drivers in Karnataka had approached state’s ex-Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who then launched HDK cabs. Mumbai’s local kaali-peli taxi’s drivers also went on to launch Aamchi Driver mobile app to rival the likes of Ola and Uber.

The President-elect Ram Nath Kovind is sworn in as the 14th President of India.

Ram Nath Kovind was on Tuesday sworn in as India’s 14th president, the first BJP leader and the second Dalit in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Kovind was administered the oath of office to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and law” by Chief Justice of India J S Kehar in an impressive ceremony in the Central Hall of Parliament.

Former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and H D Devegowda, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar, former deputy prime minister L K Advani as well as Union ministers and foreign dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

After he took an oath, Kovind was given a 21-gun salute to mark the assumption of office of the highest constitutional post in the country.

The key to India’s success is its diversity and asked people to build a country that is “an economic leader as well as a moral exemplar“. In his first address as president after taking oath at the Central Hall of Parliament, Kovind said there is need to sculpt an educated, ethical and shared community, and an egalitarian society said by The Newly President.

Lady Entrepreneurs Very Comfortable Utilizing Social Media Marketing With Facebook Their Preference

Facebook one of the top social networking websites in the world, s remains a powerful platform to gain new business, particularly for women business owners, who are comfortable leveraging social media as a strategy to stand out online.

A recent report by Animoto notes that female entrepreneurs are shaping their marketing strategies towards the social media landscape with 98% saying they use FB for marketing, and 48% saying they feel confident creating high-performing content for that platform.

With 83% of respondents selling their goods/services exclusively online or partially online, social media marketing has become an important channel for female entrepreneurs looking to generate awareness and sales, with Facebook being the most used platform.

As demonstrated by the June survey of 637 female entrepreneurs, women particularly see Facebook as a powerful platform to gain new business with video marketing.

Female marketers are also looking to reach consumers by increasing the time they spend on video marketing. With 64% of consumers saying they made a purchase in the last month after being inspired by a brand video on Facebook, 81% plan to create a marketing video within the next six months.

Further, 30% of respondents have already tried live broadcasting (i.e. Facebook Live) in the last six months while 31% have created a marketing video in the last six months using a DIY tool. Only 7% hired someone to create a video for them, demonstrating that female entrepreneurs are embracing video creation as a core competency for social media marketing.

"These days, anyone can literally start their business from their home with a laptop and an Internet connection -- in part thanks to the amazing possibilities that can be achieved with social media marketing. For me, Facebook and creating videos has always been a massive part of my marketing strategy right from the beginning of starting my business," said Carrie Green, founder, Female Entrepreneur Association.

"More than two-thirds of Animoto customers creating marketing videos are women. Communicating with video is a key component to creating high-performing social media marketing content and female entrepreneurs are leading the adoption curve. These survey findings corroborate what Animoto customers have demonstrated -- women are embracing video marketing as a way to stand out on social," said Brad Jefferson, CEO, Animoto.

Social platforms on which female entrepreneurs market themselves - along with Facebook, include Instagram (89%), Pinterest (79%), You Tube (67%), LinkedIn (66%), and Snapchat (49%).

Social platforms for which female entrepreneurs feel confident creating high-performing marketing content include Facebook (48%), Instagram (40%), Pinterest (29%) and Twitter -(20%) while video marketing behavior among female entrepreneurs in the last six months include 50% who created a marketing video, 31% created/edited videos using DIY platforms, 30% broadcasted live (i.e. Facebook Live) or shared real-time video (i.e. Snapchat) and only 7% outsourced video creation.

My name is Muzibur Rehman. I work as a rider for DOT, a small delivery company that operates electric bike taxis in Delhi. You might have seen me at the Red Fort parking lot in my blue DOT t-shirt.

The best part about my job is that I get to meet a lot of interesting people as I ferry them around the city. Of course, some do not like to chat but usually, they are quite friendly. My kids love hearing about my day and the people I meet, they look forward to me getting home in the evening so I can tell them about it. There was this time I dropped an old lady to the station, and she gave me a few mangoes from her shopping bag. I took them home for my kids – they ate them up immediately. I could see they liked them by their mango stained grinning faces.

I also like that I am contributing towards building the new India that we all talk about constantly. I heard Modi Ji's speech and felt quite proud of myself. I am doing my bit, I am a part of DOT and we take keeping the environment clean seriously.

But all this might come to an end soon!

I heard that my company has been asked to pay a few lakh rupees to keep operating in the Red Fort area. In fact, I believe they have been sent a notice to stop operations there. This will affect my job!

Tiger Shroff Dubbed Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming, in Hindi

Tiger Shroff will be doing the Hindi dub for his role in the upcoming Marvel superhero flick Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Tiger had said that dubbing for the movie, was one of the “toughest” things he has ever done. “Probably one of the most challenging things I’ve done talking at a different pitch and pace! But so much fun living the character! #halfdreamcometrue” he had written on Twitter.

English actor Tom Holland is quite happy with the news that. “I’m glad someone so talented will be doing voices for me,” Holland said it towards the end of the video.

An interview with film journalist, Rajeev Masand the 21-year-old actor said that he was happy that the Heropanti actor has been chosen to dub Spider-Man in Hindi.

In a video shared by Tiger himself, Rajeev introduces Tiger to Tom by showing him Tiger’s dance moves in the song Whistle Baja, from his debut movie, Heropanti (2014). Holland couldn’t stop marveling at the 27-year-old Bollywood actor’s dance moves and called him a “much better” dancer himself. “He is such a cool dancer. Whoa! I mean he is a real dancer,” he said during the interview.

Thakur, who was earlier posted at Syana circle in Bulandshahar, had arrested 5 BJP local leaders after they created the ruckus on the road and stopped police officials from discharging their duties. The incident went viral after a video of Thakur retaliating against BJP workers surfaced on various social media platforms. She was transferred along with other deputy superintendents.

As per a report by the local newspaper, Thakur’s transfer orders came a week after the incident took place and it is being said that the decision was taken following a meeting of the delegation of 11 BJP MLAs and MP with chief minister Yogi Adityanath. The report also stated that the local leaders stressed that the UP government to take action against the cop. The report also said that BJP city president Mukesh Bhardwaj has accepted that the officer was transferred in order to keep the party workers morale high.

The entire row took place when Bhartiya Janta Party workers started protesting against police action taken against one of their leaders Pramod Kumar. The police had slapped Kumar with a fine of Rs 200 for not wearing the helmet while riding his motorcycle. The video which went viral on social media last week shows Thakur being threatened by the BJP leaders who invoked the name of CM Adityanath. However, the policewoman asked the protesters to get a written order from the CM stating that BJP workers should be exempted from police checking and not to be charged even if they break traffic rules.

Raag Desh trailer released: The official trailer for the upcoming war film, Raag Desh is out. The movie is based on the 1945 Indian National Army (INA) trials or the Red Fort Trials, where the soldiers were charged with treason during the World War II by the British rulers. Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film also features snippets of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the Indian nationalist who led the freedom struggle movement against the British imperialists. Raag Desh shows the trials of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan, Colonel Gurubaksh Singh Dhillon and Colonel Prem Sehgal who were accused of waging war against the British king. They were prisoners of war in Malaya, Singapore, and Burma, and were later court-martialed. The three well-known persons in Indian history are played by actors Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, and Mohit Marwah.

Dhulia is known for films like Paan Singh Tomar and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns. He had tweeted earlier this month that this was a “true story on Netaji’s Indian National Army.” It will be released on July 28, according to IMDB. “It’s not a typical Bollywood film. No producer or corporate would back or fund a film like this. This cannot be made in the regular commercial format,” he told RSTV. “Since the film has been commissioned by Rajya Sabha TV, they knew the way out on how to do it. A private corporate producer wouldn’t have been able to do it. This is a very good opportunity and I am so happy. If possible, we are also planning to have a special screening later on for politicians,” Dhulia had said earlier.

Raag Desh’s trailer was launched at the Parliament in New Delhi making it the first Bollywood movie to ever do so. The film is presented by Rajya Sabha TV, which is owned and operated by the Upper House of the Parliament. The trailer features Bose’s famous dialogue, “Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azaadi doonga (You give me blood, I’ll get you freedom).”

40 years of Emergency: Here is what happened over the two years that changed India’s history

Steeped in the need for economic development, the Emergency allowed Gandhi to carry out mass arrests of ministers and have complete control over what the media published. It also resulted in her son carrying out forced sterilization drives in Delhi and slum clearance programs.

“The President has proclaimed the Emergency. This is nothing to panic about. I am sure you are all aware of the deep and widespread conspiracy, which has been brewing ever since I began to introduce certain progressive measures of benefit for the common man and woman in India.”

With the announcement of these words on the All India Radio, prime minister Indira Gandhi declared the historic moment of Emergency in 1975. Analyzed in retrospect to be one of the darkest periods of post-independent Indian history, the two-year-long period of Emergency was also perhaps the most momentous episode in the political evolution of the Indian National Congress.

Referred to as ‘the matriarch’ by historian Ramachandra Guha, Indira Gandhi had an uncomfortable relationship with democracy, a fact that is evident from several documented conversations of hers. Guha reproduced in his book, “India after Gandhi” a dialogue between Gandhi and her friend in 1963 wherein she said that “democracy not only throws up the mediocre person but gives strength to the most vocal howsoever they may lack knowledge and understanding.” Gandhi’s rise to the role of Congress president and then to the position of prime minister was accompanied by every effort on her part to gain absolute control over the government and her party. Her authoritarian stance was aided by her charismatic appeal, particularly among the middle class and the economically downtrodden who considered her to be the one who could rescue them from their economic problems. The Emergency, for Gandhi, was her strongest attempt to shut out every democratic voice and tighten her authoritarian grip.

Announced soon after the Raj Narain verdict, wherein the Supreme Court barred Gandhi from voting, the Emergency was one of the harshest clamps down on her political opponents and the media. The politico-economic situation including the recently concluded war with Pakistan, the 1973 oil crisis and the drought in the country, did everything to creating conditions perfect for Gandhi’s proclamation. Steeped in the urgent need for economic development, the Emergency allowed Gandhi to carry out mass arrests of ministers and have complete control over what the media published. It also resulted in her son, Sanjay Gandhi carrying out forced sterilization drives in Delhi and slum clearance programs. Consequently, it was also the time of large-scale protests against the dictatorial methods of the government. Foremost among them were the demonstrations organized by Jayaprakash Narayanan. Media outlets including The Indian Express and The Statesmen protested against the undemocratic conditions in the country. By the end of the two years, Gandhi had been at the receiving end of the huge amount of criticism, both from her country’s people and from world leaders. Finally, in March 1977, India was freed from the clutches of Emergency.

Here is a timeline of important events in the Emergency of 1975:

January 1966: Indira Gandhi elected prime minister.

November 1969: The Congress splits after Gandhi is expelled for violating party discipline.

1973-75: Surge in political unrest and demonstrations against the Indira Gandhi-led government.

1971: Political opponent Raj Narain lodges complaint of electoral fraud against Indira Gandhi.

June 12, 1975: Allahabad High Court found Gandhi guilty over discrepancies in the electoral campaign.

June 24, 1975: Supreme Court rules that MP privileges to no longer apply to Gandhi. She is barred from voting. However, she is allowed to continue as Prime Minister.

June 25, 1975: Declaration of Emergency by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on the advice of Indira Gandhi.

June 26, 1975: Indira Gandhi addresses the nation on All India Radio.

September 1976: Sanjay Gandhi initiates mass forced sterilization program in Delhi.

January 18, 1977: Indira Gandhi calls for fresh elections and releases all political prisoners.

March 23, 1977: Emergency officially comes to an end.

India to become 10th largest advertising market

The Indian advertising market is expected to become the tenth largest ad market in the world in 2017.

According to IPG Mediabrands-owned Magna report, Italy was the tenth largest ad market in the world up to 2016, but India will leapfrog the country, pushing it out from the top-ten list this year.

The report said that advertising spends in India is forecast to grow by 11.5% in 2017. This is 2% below the forecast of 13.5% by Magna but is in line with last year’s growth of 11.8%.

Ad spends in India are expected to grow to Rs 56,400 crore in 2017, the report said.

The Indian market is expected to grow by 12.5% in 2018 and accelerate further to 14% in 2019. This will be boosted by the ad spends due to the Cricket World Cup and General Elections.

Within the top 20 markets the highest growth rates are expected in China (7%), Spain (7%), India and Russia (10%).

A reason why the estimates are revised to 2% below is the disruption in the short term likely to be caused by the goods and service tax (GST) that comes into effect July 1.

It said that sectors such as social, fintech, payment banks, telecom, content distribution platforms along with FMCG, automobile, and e-commerce will drive spends this year.

In India digital continues to be the fastest growing medium and is expected to register a 28% growth. Even the digital ad spends are predicted to touch the Rs 10,227 crore mark.

However, traditional advertising spends will still remain strong in India. It said that India is one of the few large markets where all traditional media platforms will grow.

While television is expected to grow over 10.3%, with Free to Air (FTA) channels gaining significant ad spends, the print may grow by over 5.7% with higher spends from automobile, telecom, and education.

Radio is likely to see a large growth of over 13% while OOH is expected to grow by over 12%.

Little did the actor know that she will be a target of trolling and so called moral police. As soon as the 25-year-old posted her hot pictures on Instagram, several hate messages started pouring in. And what invited her the wrath of social media users was her ‘indecency during the month of Ramadan’. Yes, you read that right.

Fatima who is currently in Malta shooting for her next, Thugs of Hindostan is being slut-shamed in the name of religion for wearing inappropriate clothes during the holy month. One of the internet users wrote while commenting on her photo, “show some respect n dignity towards the religion simply keeping the muslim name n doin indecent act wth only further malign Islam as it doesn’t promote nudity… ” Another comment read, “Hey saram karo yaar Ramadan ka month chal rha Fatima ye sab sirf duniya me acha lagta hai mar ne ke bad ye sab kaam nhi aaye ga sana hi but I know ap naam se Muslim lagti ho kaam se Muslim nhi ho u r non Muslim.”

There are other comments from the ‘Guardians of Islam’ that followed one after the other. Though Fatima hasn’t replied to any of the comments yet, still there were many of her fans who came out in support of the young actor. “You are beautiful and no matter what people say you will be an ideal for every girl in India or outside. You represent strength. And girl don’t you just stop at that flawless bikini, you got what they don’t have been proud of it and show it off because I am sure the gods are showing you off as their success stay strong,” read one of the comments.

The photos that went viral on social media will feature in this month’s edition of GQ India magazine. Slut-shaming Bollywood celebrities and scrutinizing their attires has become a regular trend. Recently, Priyanka Chopra also became a victim when she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Berlin. But she soon gave a fitting reply to all the trollers. Even actors like Disha Patani, Kangana Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor, Nia Sharma and Monali Thakur have in the past lashed out at their haters and shut their mouths with a perfect reply. Surprise, Bill Gates, with a net worth of $81 billion, is ranked No. 1 for the 23rd year running. Meanwhile, his friend Warren Buffett fell to third place for the first time in 15 years with a net worth of $65.5 billion.

Thanks to soaring stock prices of hot tech firms, CEOs at the helm of those companies seem to have been accumulating wealth at a much faster pace than others. Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos gained $20 billion to boost his net worth to $67 billion, making him the second-richest person in the U.S.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg jumped into fourth place, his highest rank ever, with a net worth of $55.5 billion. However, Oracle founder Larry Ellison landed at No. 5 for the first time since 2007. His net worth is $49.3 billion.

Standing on the No. 6 spot is former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, CEO of the eponymous firm Bloomberg L.P., who has a net worth of $45 billion.

These six richest multi-billionaires have a combined $363.3 billion at their withdrawal, most of which is still held as stakes in the companies they founded. However, part of their fortune is vested in real estate. Mr. Gates, for one, owns a Washington mansion worth about $170 million, several horse ranches across the U.S. and shares in some luxury hotel chains through his private investment firm, Cascade.

Mr. Gates, 60, spends most of his time at his 66,000-square-foot Medina, Washington, mansion, nicknamed Xanadu 2.0 after the title character’s estate in Citizen Kane. The mansion overlooks Lake Washington. It took Mr. Gates seven years and $63.2 million to build this house, which is filled with lots of high-tech features. He purchased the lot for $2 million in 1988, but it’s now worth an estimated $170 million, according to public records.

2. Jeff Bezos

Worth: $67 billion

Home: Medina, Washington

Mr. Bezos, 52, in the process of building his e-commerce empire, scooped up a vast amount of real properties over the years, earning him the No. 26 spot on The Land Report’s list of America’s largest landowners last year. In terms of residences, he has a 165,000-acre ranch in West Texas, a waterfront house in Washington state, three linked apartments in Manhattan’s Century Tower, and a 12,000-square-foot Beverly Hills estate that boasts Tom Cruise as a neighbor, according to Forbes.

His home at Medina, Washington, close to Amazon’s headquarters, boasts 5.35 acres and about 29,000 square foot of living space. Aside from the main home, there’s also a caretaker’s cottage and a 4,500-square-foot boathouse on Lake Washington.

3. Warren Buffett

Worth: $65.5 billion

Home: Omaha, Nebraska

Although the shrewdest investor on earth holds multiple real estate investments, Mr. Buffett, 86, is known for living humbly.

His home sits on a corner in Omaha, Nebraska, which he bought in 1958 for $31,500. Mr. Buffett has lived there ever since. The house, originally built in 1921, underwent several expansions to make it a cozy and comfortable 6,500-square-foot home for the man who has a net worth of over $65.5 billion.

4. Mark Zuckerberg

Worth: $55.5 billion

Home: Palo Alto, California

The youngest richest entrepreneur docks most of his wealth in schools, health, and other philanthropies. His real estate portfolio includes his home in Palo Alto and a 9.9-million pied-a-terre near Dolores Park in San Francisco.

Mr. Zuckerberg, 32, purchased his first Craftsman-style 5,000-square-foot home in Palo Alto in 2011 for $7 million. He snapped up four of the houses surrounding his home in the following years for about $43.8 million to better keep his privacy. But his plan to tear down and rebuild those four homes has been stalled.

5. Larry Ellison

Worth: $49.3 billion

Home: Woodside, California

Oracle executive chairman Larry Ellison, 72, has an extensive real estate portfolio. He has bought up large parts of whole neighborhoods in Malibu and around Lake Tahoe. He owns a $70-million Beechwood Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island; a garden villa in Kyoto, Japan; and 98% of the land of Lanai, Hawaii’s sixth-largest island, which he purchased in 2012 for $500 million, according to published reports.

His estate in Woodside, California, with an estimated value of $110 million, is modeled after 16th-century Japanese architecture, complete with a man-made 2.3-acre lake.

6. Michael Bloomberg

Worth: $45 billion

Home: Manhattan, New York

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, 74, has more than a dozen of properties worldwide. He spends most of his time at his Upper Estate Side townhouse, but he also owns estates in the Hamptons in New York, as well as in London, Bermuda, Colorado, and Florida.

Mr. Bloomberg’s townhouse, located at 17 East 79th St., spans five stories with a limestone exterior. During his three terms as mayor, Mr. Bloomberg lived in the townhouse instead of Gracie Mansion. However, he apparently has a plan to turn it into a mega-mansion. Since 1989, he has been gradually buying up units at 19 East 79th St., the townhouse co-op that’s right next door to his current residence. Out of the six units in the white 1880 Greek-revival-style building, Bloomberg now owns five of them, according to The New York Observer.

The sub 4-meter sedan segment that the new Maruti Dzire is a part of is one that is unique to India. Formed out of legislation, it is the perfect example of how an automotive manufacturer can adapt to a circumstance that is more ‘jugaad’ and less sensibility and still makes a ton of money out of it. Maruti Suzuki has nailed the formula with the Swift Dzire in the past, but with the sub 4-meter subcompact sedan market, on the whole, looking at a decline, could there be a hat-trick in the play for the new Dzire? Well, read on to know what the new, 3rd generation, subcompact sub 4-meter Dzire – that has now dropped the Swift name – is all about...

Let's start with the exterior. Straight away, the new Dzire is most certainly the prettiest one yet. From the wider and lower dimensions of the new car to the squat stance, the new car looks a lot more proportionate than ever before. The wide grille combined with the chrome accents accentuates this wide stance and the LED headlamps and daytime running lights add to the design up front, making it look very current! The profile of the new Dzire is well sculpted and although the new car has been likened to an Ambassador reincarnate, we still think that the Maruti designers have put a ton and more of thought into this vehicle.

One of the biggest problems with the older car was the fact that it looked too much like the Swift hatch. This time around, even though the front face of the new Dzire and the Swift hatch, which will make its way to India next year, is familiar, the A-pillar has been redesigned from being quite upright to a more angular swooping look. This gives the new Dzire a more purposeful and sedan-like feel. The car also gets a set of 15-inch wheels; steel ones on the lower variants and diamond cut alloys on the higher spec. A set of 16-inch wheels would have certainly looked cooler but Maruti has taken a conscious decision to not go that route and choose a more comfort oriented wheel and tire combination.

And that brings us to the boot. For a change, the boot does not look like a hasty copy-paste botch job but one that was designed from scratch to go with the car. The addition of the chrome strip on the tailgate (or silver on the lowest variants) is also a good touch and does well to interlink the tail lamps. The taillamps are LED units and are standard on all models, which to is a good move – both for the way they look and the added visual light that they emit.

New Maruti Suzuki Dzire Rear Seat Space

The front seats are 20mm more apart which gives the passengers an airier feel. The rear seats are 30mm wider and this had been accomplished both by a wider platform and a reworked seat design. The front seats are comfortable and even after driving for over two hours, I personally felt no real signs of fatigue. The rear seats too are nicer than the older ones and give more lumbar and under-thigh support. You also get a rear AC vent and a fold down central console with some cup holders.

New Maruti Suzuki Dzire Dashboard

The dashboard itself reminds us of the older Dzire and is well layered with dark gray up top and a beige bottom. The dashboard itself has a wood panel divider that is now much much nicer to touch and has great dark-wood style texture as compared to previous generations. The AC vents get a silver surround that perfectly matches the silver on the crisp and clear instrument cluster and the flat bottom steering wheel with the wood inserts ties everything up well.

The center of attraction in the Dzire though has to be the gloss black central console, which as always, is prone to fingerprint marks and dust. The console has a touchscreen infotainment unit that I personally have grown quite fond of. The touchscreen unit has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard and also houses inbuilt navigation. The touchscreen is responsive and easy to use and is one of the nicest screens on any sub 10-lakh rupee car out there. The new Dzire also gets climate control on the top spec Z and Z+ models.

The Dzire gets both the petrol and the diesel engine that was in the last generation and also gets a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT automatic, or, as Maruti calls it, AGS (Automated Gear Shift). The petrol engine makes 82 bhp or peak power and 113 Nm of peak torque. The more popular diesel on the other hand makes 74 bhp of peak power but 190 Nm of torque. In the past, buyers have always preferred the diesel engine option in the Dzire so let's talk about that first.

The maual gearbox and the 1.3-litre DDiS engine is the quintessential Maruti Suzuki pairing that the common man enjoys. And why not! It has always been a fun little motor to drive especially if you learn the way the power comes in once the turbos begin to do their thing. The engine is relatively the same as before in terms of driving feel and even though the turbo lag in a higher gear and lower speed combination remains, the diesel manual is still a zippy little car to drive. The gearbox itself feels solid and the short shifts and light clutch that we loved in the previous generation continue to stay the same.

The diesel engine also gets the 5-speed automatic AMT or AGS gearbox as we mentioned earlier. The diesel engine and the AMT gearbox make a great pair and there is the very little lag between the shifts when driving normally. Floor the throttle a little more and the car does tend to have a bit more lag but it is definitely something you can live with. A sports mode would have really helped this package by leaps and bounds making it respond a lot better to throttle inputs. That said, the tuning of the AMT gearbox and the manual now makes the diesel Dzire return a fuel efficiency figure of 28.4 km pl making it the most fuel-efficient car in the country!

The petrol engine too is essentially the same unit as the last generation car and also the one found in the likes of the Ignis and the Baleno. The 1.2-litre unit does feel slightly underpowered as compared to the diesel even though it is rated higher in terms of horsepower as it does make a lot less torque. But, with a strong top end power band it can keep you entertained if you rev it hard although that will have a direct effect on your fuel economy.

The new mechanical addition to the Dzire though is the AMT gearbox pairing with the petrol engine. This is the same unit as the one on the Ignis but the shift timings have been modified slightly to offer a smoother shift in order to maximize comfort. There is still a bit of the typical automatic gearbox nod when it shifts between gears and just like with the diesel AMT, the petrol would have been much better off with a sports mode of some sort to make the shifts faster.

Also similarly, once you know how the gearbox responds to your throttle position and throttle movements, the Dzire Automatic petrol is as good to drive as any other AMT out there. The AMTs though, do get hill hold assist and crawl mode, both of which work with no judders and drama at all. In traffic too, the AMT responds well when one takes their foot off the brakes and transitions to the throttle. If driven sedately, both the manual and the automatic petrol return a respectable 22 kmpl of fuel efficiency.

So the Dzire might have this radio taxi or just-your-average-family-sedan sort of image but when it comes to actual driving dynamics, it is a pretty fun car to drive. The last generation was one of my favorite cars when it came to hitting a mountain road and this one with the new Heartec platform is even better. It is lighter which means the steering turn in is a little more precise. Steering feedback is just as good and it does have that balance between ride and handling which is almost perfect. So when you want to throw it around corners, you can do that, and then when you want to settle down and just enjoy the drive, especially with your family considering the fact that this is going to be mainly a family car, it does that well as well.

In terms of safety features, Maruti has gone that extra step and have made two airbags and ABS standard on all variants. The platform that underpins the Dzire also meets all future crash norms which include offset and pedestrian safety. And you get Isofix mountings as the standard for your toddlers child seat too.

The new Dzire then is just a great all round package. It looks nice, especially compared to the older versions, is packed full of gadgets, has the petrol and diesel engines and the manual or AMT option too and is well priced. The sub 4-meter subcompact sedan segment might be slumping but the Dzire is definitely going to set sales charts on fire. Considering the car already has thousands of bookings, Maruti has a sure shot winner here. And why not. In my personal opinion, if a sub 4-meter sedan is what you really want, this is possibly the best one out there.

Rohit Sharma likely to be India's New Vice Captain at Champions Trophy 2017

Rohit Sharma recently led his IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, to their third title win in the recently concluded 10th edition of the tournament.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma is likely to fill in the capacity of the vice-captain of the Indian team in the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy. Team India is set to leave for England for the ICC mega event soon. They will be playing two warm-up matches prior to heading into the tournament proper that commences on June 1. India will play their first match of the tournament on June 4 at Birmingham against Pakistan.

The Indian squad for the tournament was named a couple of weeks ago. Virat Kohli is set to lead the team to the big tournament where India will head over as the defending champions. However, the selectors did not appoint any vice-captain while announcing the squad. Now, as per some reports, it is speculated that Rohit Sharma is likely to be Kohli’s deputy for the tournament.

There has been a section of people who want Rohit to be taking over as the T20 captain as well. That seems to be a far cry at the moment. “The selectors have not announced the name of the vice-captain. However, among themselves, they have already chosen one, but will be announced only if required in an emergency,” one of the sources in BCCI revealed.

Earlier, even Rohit was asked if he would want to take the role of the captain in the future. A very humble Rohit had remarked that he keeps his focus on the next assignment and does not think too far ahead. However, if the opportunity beckons sometime in the future, he will take it with both hands.

“That’s thinking too far ahead. I don’t think too far ahead. When the opportunity comes, it comes. I will grab it with both hands,” he had said.
