Bridge Contest, Take One by Lindy Sims

Today, we tested our practice brides, before the real contest next week. We had two styles: larger, flat-topped bridges, and smaller, suspension bridges. We tested the larger bridges with books, and the smaller, with human force. The winners of the first category were Matei, Riley and Alvina! The winners of the second category were Dustin, Zane and Lukas! Well done!

P.S. There are tons of pictures that look really similar, taken by the amazing photographer, Lucas. I left them in because it is SO funny to watch the kids’ faces as the number of books climbs.

Happy Weekend!
Today, we reenacted several stories of real people who traveled the Oregon Trail. The kids did a fabulous job, and our buddy class appreciated our work. I also took pictures of each wagon party in their amazing costumes! What a fun day!

Just so you can mark your calendars — our end-of-year Expo will be held May 31 from 4-6 (or possibly, 4:30-6:30). This will be your child’s opportunity to present their content work throughout the year, their LID / Pots research, and other academic endeavors.

Yesterday, I talked with the class about the Expo and about the expectations for their LID/Pots poster presentation. Please talk with your child about their project and help them to set aside the time that they will need to prepare their display.

Dear Families,

Working hard on our Graphic Novels

We all had a marvelous break and are so glad to see the kids again and hear their stories.

We hope you have all heard by now. We have rescheduled our Lewis and Clark Graphic Novel Release Party, waylaid by yet another snow-day, to Wednesday of this week at 3:20. Surely, a snow day in April is out of the question! As previously planned, the event will begin in your child’s classroom as they present their novels to you. We will follow up with activities which will bring you into each of the four classrooms and finally to the common area where we hope you will greet our Primary School Community and share a treat. Please plan to stay with us through-out the event until 3:15 dismissal. We hope you are able to attend, but understand that some work schedules would not permit. If you are available to share the novel and activities with another classmate whose family could not attend, it would be appreciated.

As we attempt to pull together the tattered threads of that last, bizarre week, we are moving on to study the final, dizzying 200 years of Gorge history. Like the Missoula Floods before, the rumbling warnings become the full onslaught of change in the Gorge. The inhabitants of that time were powerless to resist the modernizing world. That will bring us to today and to summer!

Maybe with less drama, the last two months of the school year will race by. We are planning concluding events for the year. This will include a final Portfolio Night. We are planning on holding this last event on Thursday, May 31 from 4-6 pm. The next day, Friday, will be our last day of the school year and a half-day of school.

And here’s another one! We sent (or are sending) home this year’s Jog-a-thon form. This is the only fund-raising event from our devoted PTA. We will use our PE periods on April 17 and 18 to test our endurance in the gym. It’s an exciting event for the kids, pledges or not! But the school and the kids appreciate any support your friends and family can share. Please remind your student to wear good running shoes and comfortable, cool clothes.

A Visit From a Surgeon and an OR Nurse by Lindy Sims

To wrap up our anatomy unit, we were insanely lucky, and had a surgeon and an OR nurse come in to visit. I am so sorry that I forgot to post the pictures!

We got to practice suturing pigs’ feet and performing laparoscopic surgery, and see a video of minimally invasive surgery! What an amazing opportunity. Dr. Shaghayegh Alabadi and Nurse Kim were so warm and patient with the kids, and showed how much they both love their jobs. I hope you have heard all about it!

Dear Parents,

Wow, hard to believe we are already at Spring Break!

Just a quick memo —

*Our biography narrative speeches were this week — highly entertaining, and a job well done by all. Thanks for helping your child there.

*We are looking at “End of Year” math calendars, in order to push / ensure that your child finishes their book this year. Please spend a bit of time helping your child map out their next 10 weeks of math.

*In terms of LID / POTS, we have ordered the poster boards for each child. Their presentation will take place during our end-of-year LID and Academic Fair. Their LID / POTS boards will be presented then. (Their board should be a cumulative display of this year’s research). Please make sure that your child is spending time at home preparing their display (art / maps / diagrams / fact sheets, etc).

After spring break, we will be launching into a new writing unit, as well as continuing on with our Westward Expansion history studies. We’ll be wrapping up the year with a study of Bridges & Architecture, as well as the 50 States.
