My AP Biology students have been lucky to work with a local non-profit group named Wolftree.  One of Wolftree’s missions is to bring authentic research methods into the classroom, and they’ve been working with Corbett’s AP biology classes for the last two years.  With their help, last year we established three forest inventory sites on BLM land in the Buck Creek drainage of Larch Mountain.  These inventory sites were established using Bureau of Land Management protocol, and over 3 long, cold, and rainy days we collected a massive amount of data about the Buck Creek watershed.  When we returned to the classroom, students analyzed the data and used it to answer their research questions.  The project was a great opportunity for the students to create scientific questions, design an experiment, and use professional methods to collect and analyze data.  After all of this work, 25 presented their findings to a group of scientists during a conference held at Timberline Lodge.

So why does my room smell like a skunk?  This year my class has been working with Wolftree to find out if the Northern Flying Squirrel lives in the Buck Creek watershed.  In order to do this, we are going to set up grids of live-traps in a variety of habitats.  The traps are humane, and they basically hold the animal in a safe box with food and water for a couple of hours until we record size, weight, and sex of the animal and release it.  By setting up the traps in a variety of areas based on last year’s research, we want to narrow down what type of habitat these flying squirrels prefer.  As it turns out though, flying squirrels are not the only animals tempted by the delicious bait in the traps.  Other animals have a hard time resisting the free meal, and the last people who used the traps had to deal with two unhappy skunks.  I’m sure you can imagine the outcome of that situation, and two years later, that smell is still stuck to the traps, and those traps are now in my classroom.  So that’s why my room smells like skunk, and if your child comes home smelling a little strong, maybe they were the lucky person who got to release an unhappy skunk from a trap.

Our goal is to
create a place where kids struggling with school can come get help and encouragement. We are creating a safe environment for kids who need help on any school subject, with a main focus on math, which is an area where many kids suffer. The plan is to help other kids set goals for what they want to accomplish, work through their confusion, teach them good study habits, and really focus on helping them understand and enjoy what they are learning.

Our goal is to serve the community and love the kids who need it most through these tutoring sessions. This is a great opportunity for kids to work through their struggles in school and finish the school year strong.

Mr. Pearson and Mrs. Luna will be hosting the monthly MS/HS principals chat on Thursday March 1st at 8am. We will meet in the MS/HS office. Please join us for coffee and a light snack to talk about what is going on in our middle and high schools. This is an informal get-together designed to encourage open communication in a friendly atmosphere. We hope you can join us!
