In the pursuit of understanding some of the major elements and principles of design we have been focusing on Kandinsky for the past month. This week we finished an intensive round of peer critique. What an experience! Nearly every student presented their nonobjective works to their classmates, answered clarifying questions and received feedback. The insight communicated by students this year to their peers was among the strongest I have heard in my career of teaching.

For the first project, students chose one piece by Wassily Kandinsky and created its companion by drafting a new composition that employed some of the elements and principles (e.g., shape, line, color, scale for emphasis, movement) found in their chosen work by Kandinsky.

The second of the two required the student to translate rhythm, texture and melody of music into a visual experience design and execute an abstraction based on a song of their choice. They were introduced to this project with a viewing of Scriabin’s Prometheus: Poem of Fire, a documentary featuring an attempt to realize composer Alexander Scriabin’s vision of combining light and sound in a multi-sensory symphony.

If you didn’t get a chance to see your child’s artwork during Wednesday’s conferences, feel free to drop by and check it out after school!

With a strong start in the nonobjective world, Corbett’s students will continue building on foundation for modern art.

The air is filled with enthusiasm for what is sure to be a fantastic new school year. Corbett’s students have a great foundation of success to build on this year.

Congratulations to the AP Art and Psychology students of this past year. Here’s a nod to the entire class of 2-D Design students, who as a class matched its global passing rate. AP Psychology was within one student of exceeding its global passing rate. We have much to be proud of as a non-tracked AP program.

This year’s psychology students can look forward to receiving a calendar of reading, assignment due dates and scheduled quizzes and tests on the first day. We will continue to focus on articulating the vocabulary and concepts seen in a collegiate introductory psychology course. Student projects and presentations will take a greater role than in the past. This class is far beyond reading a prep book. That said, I do encourage students to purchase a 5 Steps to a 5: AP Psychology published by McGraw-Hill as a supplement to the classroom curriculum. It is not required, but the past two recent editions have proved a useful to tool to diligent students.

All AP art students will be spending more focus on planning and building sophisticated concentration sections to their portfolios. Remember, if this is your second or later year in art, you will be submitting an AP Studio Art portfolio in May, 2012.

Enjoy the final weekend of summer. I look forward to seeing students on Monday, and everyone else at the open house on Wednesday, September 7th!
