“What if everybody read the same the same book?” That is the question posed by Multnomah County Library’s Everybody Reads community reading project. This year, sophomores are fortunate to be part of this exciting community literacy program and have been reading The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Portland native Heidi Durrow. All sophomore English students have the amazing opportunity to attend an author talk with Durrow on Tuesday evening, March 6 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
A brief summary of the book:
In the aftermath of a family tragedy, a biracial girl must cope with society’s ideas of race and class in this acclaimed novel, winner of the Bellwether Prize for fiction addressing issues of social justice.

In Heidi Durrow’s own words, “My hope is that the story-set in 1980s Portland- generates lively discussions about belonging and identity in my beloved hometown.”

This will be inspirational for our students; they will hear directly from an accomplished author and be part of community literary discussion.

Permission slips will be coming home next week.

Welcome to a new school year. We will be busy learning from day one. We will begin our journey this year discussing the Neolithic Revolution(long,long time ago). By the end of the year, we will know so much about the world and global processes, we will all be absolutely amazed by how much we have learned. In English, we will embark on an odyssey of world literature that complements our history studies. We will journey to distant, ancient lands and experience new cultures.
