Students have been working diligently on their Ancient Rome projects for the past few weeks. This week, students are participating in debates on The Most Important Roman. Students prepared for their debates by researching and writing a thesis paper on an Ancient Roman of their choice. Along with the paper and debate, students should be close to completing their Ancient Rome visual that will be on display during next week’s festivities.

Corbett Middle School is hosting Ancient Civilization Night next Tuesday, March 20th from 3:45-6:00 P.M. Each classroom will open their doors to family and friends, inviting them to walk through their student constructed museum of the ancient civilization that they have been studying for weeks. Room 6 has nicknamed this particular night as “Romans Rule! Night.”

This week, for simple machines, we are focusing on the lever. Students are currently performing an experiment on effort vs. load using a lever that they constructed with classroom materials. Ancient Egypt group projects have been submitted and will be presented by mid-week. Starting Monday of next week, students will be delivering their Ancient Egypt speeches to the class. We will be workshopping our speeches this week, but students should spend time at home editing and practicing their speeches as well!

We finished our Empire Building Simulation as well as the first trimester! As we dive into studying Ancient Egypt, we will also focus on science by examining the invention and use of simple machines in ancient times, and how they continue to play a role in current societies. Student progress reports should arrive in the mail around the middle of next week!

Students are wrapping up their fourth story, focusing on the use of dialogue. This week, students will choose one of their four stories to further improve for Storytelling Night held at Corbett Middle School on October 19th from 4:30-7:30. Each student will have an opportunity to practice telling their final story to the class, but additional practice at home is encouraged.

Last week, we began our Ancient Civilization unit with a simulation exploring the first civilizations of the Fertile Crescent. Students are working in clans (Babylonians, Persians, Phoenicians, Medes, and Hittites) to complete tasks and be the first clan to establish an empire!
