Our class took a second field study last week as part of our on-going Bridge Unit. Our tour guide, Nathan Hoover, led us to the Department of Transportation. We then hopped on the MAX to arrive at the Morrison Bridge, and viewed the bridge lifting from its bascule pit — the students loved it! We thanked the bridge operator, Dennis, and headed back to the MAX, hopping off back at Chinatown. We crossed the Steel Bridge to Rose Quarter and rode the MAX back over the Steel Bridge’s upper deck to Union Station for lunch. After lunch we walked on the Broadway Bridge and imagined what it would be like to climb the to the top of Fremont’s arch. We caught the bus to the Veteran’s hospital to walk across the longest indoor suspension bridge in the US. We finished with a ride downhill on the OHSU Tram and a walk through South Waterfront. It was a great opportunity to view truss, arch, suspension and beam bridges in action while learning a bit of history along the way!

Here are a few pictures of our trip…..

As part of our Columbia Gorge Studies and Bridges Unit, our class went on a field study along the Scenic Highway. In class, we’ve been studying the arch, truss, suspension and beam bridge constructions. This field study was an opportunity to put our knowledge into practice! We stopped at three different bridges in the Gorge: The Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks, Shepperd’s Dell Bridge and Latourell Creek Bridge. At each leg of the field study, students studied specific statistics regarding each bridge, identified each bridge type, and labeled its components while experiencing the bridges in person. We also a few small hikes along the way to enjoy our natural surroundings! Here are just a few pictures of our trip.

As part of our People of the Columbia River Gorge study, we participated in a simulation, or role-playing, and became a Native American Chinook Village. Students wrote historical fiction journal entries that recorded the life of their character through the simulation. Some parts came from their imagination, other parts are based on historical facts and the rest was decided by fate!

As a village, we have gone through the writing process numerous times to publish these journal entries. Next Monday, February 6th, we will be celebrating our published pieces as a village! We are in need of the following:

30 hot beverage cups (Valentine’s Day themed preferably)

30 napkins (Valentine’s Day themed preferably)

60 cookies (Valentine’s Day themed preferably)

30 hot chocolate packets (preferably)

Red, White, Pink or Purple flowers for decorations

2-3 Parent Volunteers to help set-up and clean-up

This Author’s Celebration will have a Valentine’s Day theme, in lieu of a traditional Valentine’s Day party. In this way, we are able to keep our class celebrations focused on meaningful, student-based projects and have a great time doing it!

This week our village members are weaving baskets to replicate the process and simulate this time-consuming activity. We will continue to work on them this week. If you are interesting in helping to guide the students in this process during class time, please let us know. We’d love to have more adults in the class to help!

The last week of school before Winter Break will be jammed packed full of curriculum and celebrations! Our Chinook village will experience a new fate and task (more to follow next week). We will meet with our buddy class for a collaborative activity, wrap up our Biography Book Clubs, participate in a school-wide Sing-a- Long (led by the Funky Monkeys), and experiment with a new Vegetable of the Month in Garden Studies.

Remember, the last day of school is Thursday, December 15th and Winter Break begins. We wish everyone a joyful holiday season and look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday, January 3rd.

Happy Holidays!

It’s been such a busy week! Our Chinook Village Simulation is in full swing and is permeating several different aspects of our day. Last week, the students’ characters discovered that some of the village children were missing. So, based on Native American legend, they had to create whistling masks to help guide the lost children back home. This week, the village relocated to their Winter Longhouses, only to find that a lightening storm had destroyed their homes. So they had to rebuild! Students created model longhouses and wrote journal entries from their character’s perspective about the rebuilding process. Our classroom village then voted to decide which clan’s longhouse was the most historically accurate.

We had a wonderful time at our Harvest Gathering. The morning started late, due to a power outage, but we hit the road running! Dancers from the Warm Springs Reservation shared several stories and dances with the elementary school during an all school assembly. They even invited the students to participate in the program. It was simply wonderful! Following the assembly, we shared a simple meal of smoked salmon, nuts, and berries with our buddies after trading hand-made beads. What a beautiful way to head-out for the long weekend.
