¡Feliz año nuevo!
I meant to get this post up here at the beginning of break, but here we are almost back in class! I hope you have all had a wonderful rest and begun working on your outside tasks or TAREA. Here is the run down on what is required this term for tarea:
For each assignment – except the presentation – you are required to write a 1/2 page reflection in your Spanish notebook. Spanish is the preferred language, of course, but you may use some English if necessary. In order to have a passing grade at mid-term, students must complete at least 3 outside tasks by January 20th.
1. Pelicula – Watch a full-length feature film in Spanish. There are many many titles available on netflix. If you have difficulty getting a movie, please let me know. I will also host a movie at school either after school one day or on a Friday. The date for this is not yet set. After watching the movie, please write a reflection in your Spanish notebook.
2. Cuento Corto – You have three stories to choose from for this assignment. There are xeroxed copies in my classroom. If you know of another story that you would like to use, please get that approved by me.
3. Veintemundos.com – Visit this website and choose one article to read and listen to. The bold words in the articles mean that you can run the cursor over those words to see the translation.
4. Presentacion – Each student must prepare a 15-20 minute presentation on a topic of their choice. We signed up for dates before winter break. The presentation must be wholly in Spanish with some interactive element to keep the class engaged.
5. Libre eleccion – Free choice. Choose any Spanish related tarea from last term or this to complete this task. You could watch a second movie, Spanish television for 1/2 an hour, collect environmental Spanish examples, learn something on the Internet, have a conversation with a native speaker, and more!

Sra. Luna’s Spanish I class will go on a field trip on Monday Nov. 14th to practice newly acquired vocabulary in Spanish. We will go to La Tapatia Super Mercado and the restaurant next door to practice ordering food at a restaurant and shopping in Spanish. Students will leave campus at 10:50 and be back at school about 12:50. We will be eating lunch at the restaurant and students are requested to bring about $5 for lunch – if possible.

Mexico 2012 by Lori Luna

Hola -
There will be a “Mexico 2012″ meeting on Wednesday October 12th – the same night as high school conferences – from 7:30 until 8:00pm. Any interested students and their parents are encouraged to attend. Ideally, I would like to have 5-10 students come to Mexico with me next year. We had a fabulous time this past summer and so did the students! The total cost of the trip will be aobut $2000. We will spend a month in Mexico, the students will have a full four weeks of study at the University of Guanajuato, a homestay opportunity, and enjoy seeing both Mexico City and the fabulous small city of Guanajuato Mexico. I look forward to seeing you there!

Advanced Spanish Verbal Practice by Lori Luna

Hi All-

Students need to visit the following site: clear.msu.edu/mashups/11419 and complete a verbal activity. This should be completed by Monday September 26th if at all possible. If students have problems locating a computer with a microphone, I will have support for them next week, however, I would prefer they complete this assignment over the weekend if they can.

Espanol Avanzado – Tarea (Outside Tasks) by Lori Luna

Hola!
Students in advanced Spanish are expected to complete six tasks each term outside of class. The tasks may vary by trimester. This first trimester students must do the following on their own time:
1. Find at least 5 examples of ‘environmental Spanish’, write about them in their notebooks and include pictures of at least two of them.
2. Have a conversation with a native Spanish speaker outside of school – this could be in a Hispanic market, etc. – and reflect in their journals.
3. Watch a 30 minute Spanish language TV show – they are also available to view online – and reflect in their journals.
4. Watch a feature length Spanish language film – I will include a partial list of possible titles – and reflect.
5. Have an email/facebook exchange with a friend to make plans – print it out and staple into their notebook.
6. Learn to do something in Spanish on the internet, for example: origami, a recipe, anything with directions in Spanish.

Bienvenidos a las clases de español.
Welcome to Spanish class at Corbett High School. I am Sra. Luna – one of four Spanish teachers at the high school level (two are charter employees and two are Corbett Schools employees). All of us also have other responsibilities apart from Spanish, but we also teach one or more levels of Spanish. I currently have one class of first year Spanish and three sections of advanced Spanish.
In level one Spanish, we are learning lots of vocabulary fast and furiously! The students have learned at least 50 words in just the first four days alone! We are using a method called “TPR” or Total Physical Response, which makes learning fun, active, and effective.
In the advanced level Spanish, students in 2nd, 3rd and 4th levels are combined in a multi-level class designed to meet each student where s/he is at and move them forward. This is another example of the continuous progress model that is present in many of the programs at Corbett Schools. Currently we are exploring a health unit in Spanish that includes useful words and phrases that one might use when visiting a Dr. and current issues in health related fields. Students will be creating projects designed to demonstrate what they have learned as a culminating activity for this unit.

Spanish Immersion: Study in Guanajuato Mexico in July of 2012 by Lori Luna

This past July, I spent a month in Guanajuato finishing up my course work for a master’s in teaching Spanish at the University of Guanajuato. But, the best part was, that this time I was able to bring four Corbett High School students with me! Henry Hammel, Liesel Swanson, Lindsey Miller and Elizabeth Ferek were the first group of students from Corbett High to go with me to visit Mexico City and the lovely city of Guanajuato in central Mexico. After spending two days in Mexico City, we traveled north by bus to Guanajuato where the students were met by their homestay families. Henry, Liesel, Lindsey and Elizabeth got settled in quickly after some minor adjustments and began attending classes at the University of Guanajuato. For four weeks they lived with their host families and studied at the university. They loved their time there and I loved seeing them learning and having fun.

I will be returning to Guanajuato in the summer of 2012. Once again I would like to bring a group of students with me so they can have the incredible opportunity to improve their Spanish skills, be immersed in another culture, enjoy the beauty and unique atmosphere of a colonial Mexican city that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and just have fun.
