Last Thursday we had a wonderful field trip to Fort Vancouver. This trip paired so nicely with what we’ve been learning in class. Students had a lot of knowledge, and they learned new things too!

We started our tour in the store, where we got to see what items would be of value for trading. They got to point out items they wanted to learn more about, which included italian glass beads, blankets, tobacco, reed mats, thimbles, and lots of items essential to life in the mid-nineteenth century. All transactions were recorded in a huge ledger.

Next we headed to the McLoughlin House where we met Mrs. Mcloughlin herself! She gave us a tour of her home, explaining to us new emigrants what life in the Oregon Territory would be like.

We then headed to where we got to hear about Hudson’s Bay Company’s history and influence in the area. Students picked items out of a trunk, one by one, to hear their significance to the story.

Finally, we saw the store room where pelts were hung, pressed and packaged. Students got to feel grey wolf, beaver, black bear, otter and raccoon pelts, among others.

Students then had the opportunity to freely explore the fort. Lucky for us the blacksmith was in!

We all have memories of certain titles. I grew up reading Yertle the Turtle over and over. He is one of my favorite authors to read aloud and children love reading his books as well. Students are encouraged to bring in their favorite titles by an author who has brought joy to so many.

We also enjoyed learning more about the vegetable of the month: Broccoli! What a super food! I hope the benefits of strong bones, a strong immune system, healthy digestion and strong muscles motivate students to eat this wonderful vegetable.
