It sounds and looks like something from Dr Who; but the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a real-life particle accelerator in Geneva, Switzerland involving collaboration between 8,000 physicists from more than 80 countries. The device, which stretches around a 27 kilometre tunnel, cost around US$10 billion and has taken more than twenty years to develop. One aim of the project is to find a theoretical particle called the ‘Higgs boson’, named for the Scottish physicist Peter Higgs whose 1964 theory suggested that a never-observed particle present at the time of the ‘Big Bang’ gives mass to matter, thus making the universe possible.
