Connect with Phoebe via @PhoebeFarber, @CareerApp, or phoebe@careerapp.me .

As a new grad you may not have much formal work experience or great connections that can land you a job. So you’re stuck doing some soul searching to figure out what you want to do and where you want to live while scouring job boards and company career portals trying to find something that fits you. But applications today are redundant, time consuming, and frustrating.

Despite the debate, the resume is not dead and is still the focal point of many job applications. Investing the time in polishing your resume is time well spent but as more employers want to see you differentiate yourself from the crowd you need to showcase your achievements, awards, past performances, leadership roles, and more as you apply for jobs. As a job seeker in a competitive market you need to be able to put the best parts of your professional self on display and below I listed a few suggestions.

1. Have references ready: References allow employers to see you as a well-rounded person and hear about your skills, work ethic, and more from a third party perspective. References don’t always have to be a past employer; they can be a professor, coach, adviser, or anyone who can provide a solid reference. Not all employers will want references, but be sure to have 2-3 people who have already agreed to be a reference to you and include their information whenever possible in an application.

2. Build a portfolio: Many employers look for past work or achievements when they go to hire. The type of portfolio that is appropriate for you depends on what your academic and career interests are.

Many computer science students use GitHub (github.com) to share their code and past projects, Art students may use Behance (behance.com), Carbonmade (carbonmade.com), or another type of portfolio to share their past works, and English/Communications students may use blogs. A well-crafted portfolio is a great way to show what you’ve done and to stand apart.

3. Create a [positive] web presence: Web presence is a loaded term. On one hand, you want to protect your personal profile on sites like Facebook and Instagram while sharing those pieces of you that you want employers to see and can help your job search.

To deal with my first point, there’s a great company called BrandYourself (brandyourself.com) that helps you maintain your personal “brand” online and make sure that when someone Googles your name they find YOU.

To my second point, I founded a company that is building CareerApp (careerapp.me) as the “Common App for jobs” that allows you to create a robust profile and really showcase yourself to employers. You can share your profile with employers and apply to jobs with one click to help your job application process.

As a job seeker you will need to be proactive, prepared, and motivated. As a new entrant to the workforce you’ll need to be creative about finding jobs, discovering what is a good fit for your personality, skill set, and interests, and making yourself stand out to get hired. Be sure to put your best foot forward and prove that you’re more than a piece of paper.

I don’t have to tell you that hundreds of thousands of people are searching for a job. I’m sure it also feels like each of them is in the hunt for the same job that you’re looking for.

Persistence is Key

Don’t lose your patience. When you get frustrated, it’s more than OK to punch a pillow, run a few miles, or even take a day off from the job search. Just don’t give up. It surely sucks getting rejected over and over, but you will eventually find our golden ticket.

Pardons: A New Start

One big obstacles holding back is the background check. If they have certain types of past criminal offense, they may be quickly denied employment, even if they have changed. Many of these individuals just wish to contribute to the country’s economy. To combat this, the National Parole Board does give them a chance for redemption. By applying for a pardon, certain convictions can be removed from the job applicant’s criminal record. If approved, the incident will not show up when the background check is run.

While the process to obtain a pardon is somewhat complicated in different countries, there are some organizations that will take care of the legalities for a fee. For example, pardons Canada offers services to help people with criminal records get back into the workforce, and even gain entry into the United States for employement. While it’s not a thrilling thought to have to pay for legal services, the investment is one that will easily pay for itself over time spent employed.

Secondary Education

It’s not for everyone, but furthering your education could be the boost you need. While some industries won’t benefit from it, others will find the networking and exposure to be exactly what they needed.

Don’t Be Picky

It’s okay to be picky, but once your wallet starts shrinking then it’s time to take a c lose look at your options. While we would all love to work at at our ideal perfect company, your job and career is sometimes what you make of it. I’ve met too many people who were shocked to find that their “dream job” was a bust. Just make it your own opportunity.

This post was written by Joe Linford from Broadband Genie, the online consumer advice site for iPhones, tablets and broadband packages in the UK, such as BT infinity.

In the present economy, finding a job that’s ideally suited to your skills can be quite overwhelming, and if you want to take the lead in today’s job market, you might feel that have to keep vigil twenty four hours a day, which as we all know can be a daunting or impossible task.

It can be pulled off, however, but only with a little bit of technological assistance, and geo location apps especially could represent your only salvation.

By utilizing the GPS technology that has been built in to many of today’s smartphone devices –iPhone, Blackberry, Android, geo-location apps enable users to check in to a location with just a click of a button rather than manually keying in the entire address.

Tips and Advice for Using Geo Location Apps in Job Search

Geo location smartphone apps help recruiters to source ideal candidates, based on both experience and location, whilst job seekers can apply the technology to access a reliable job listing in their local area.

For instance, if a candidate is in search of a retail or restaurant job in a given location, the activity stream of a location feature indicates which retail stores or restaurants are the most popular in the area, thus enhancing the user’s employment prospects.

A smartphone user can also load a company’s geo–location tracker applications onto his or her device, and if the impulse strikes, take a job nearby anytime of the day.

Some location tracker apps also include a feature that identifies, firsthand, open jobs on company webpages and matches such opportunities to a job seeker’s location, presenting them too with an online map for easy and efficient use.

Top Geo Location Apps to Help Users with Their Employment Quest

Job Finder: Search opportunities from various job sites without having to sign up to them. Job finder makes finding a dream job a breeze, as it offers users the option to enter their preferred city, along with a number of other preferences, like; the type of job, proposed salary, and so on. This app is compatible with smartphone devices such as iPhone and Android.

iJobs: iJobs is a great way to get hundreds of thousands of fresh open jobs delivered direct to your device. It includes a location detector that organises the job listings in order of their distance to your home, and also presents the option to search for jobs based on description, keywords, zip codes, salary, and so on. Arranging your job search on the search list couldn’t possibly be any easier.

Craigster: Craigster (on iPhone or Android) enables users to browse through various job categories as well as bookmark and email certain posts, hence making the job quest a whole lot easier. It also presents the option of marking locations on a map, enhancing the efficiency and user friendly nature of the service.

Finally, there are numerous other geo location apps that can assist you in minding your ideal job, based on your skills, qualifications and requirements, such as Job Compass, which Rich mentioned in The 5 iPhone Apps That Every Job Seeker Needs.

Most of these apps are either free or cost less than a dollar. For such a small price, thy really can make a huge difference, and in today’s competitive market, it is increasingly important to stay one step ahead of the game.

We’re no strangers to #HireMe campaigns here on Corn on the Job. We’ve talked about campaigns for folks wanting to work at Chipotle, Krispy Kreme, hockey & sports sales, and even someone who just wanted to get a job in New York City.

Today we’re sharing a video resume from Jannesse Davidson. She’s hoping that her song to Jon Stewart will land her an interview and eventually, a job as the next Daily Show Correspondant. Take a look at her video and stop back for my comments below.

Let it be known, I am not the most political person that this world has to offer, but the song kept my interest and I was inclined to stay until the very end. A song is difficult to pull off and takes a bit of courage. While it’s much more entertaining, you can also lose the audience quickly if the singer’s voice is lame or if the words used are corny/come off as trying too hard.

Will this be enough to gain attention from Jon Stewart?

Well, all we know so far is that a video has been created. What we don’t know is, (and I will be following up with Jannesse) how is this video being sent? Is she using social media to distribute the video and make sure the YouTube page is seen? Is a link being sent in an email? These are all of the questions that candidate’s must ask themselves when employing a #HireMe campaign.

It’s not always enough to just be creative and develop the content. The #HireMe campaign must include tactics for reaching the target audience as well, which can take some extra time to do right, before it becomes a viral success.

Corn on the Job also opened the door to some fantastic opportunities:

#JobHuntChat - launched in 2010 and was the very first twitter chat for job seekers and recruiters to connect.

A career coaching business that is run through Corn on the Job. I was fortunate enough to bring my experience and education to help many readers a 1-on-1 with their own job search.

Bad Rhino Social Media – I co-founded a Social Media Marketing Agency in 2011 called Bad Rhino. The company is taking off and we have a growing team of awesome social media marketers.

When I started Corn on the Job, my time was spent solely focused on growing it and building it up. Things have changed slightly, and as you can see above, my time is now spent growing a number of businesses. To ensure that Corn on the Job is constantly growing and consistently evolving, I’ve decided that it’s time to bring in some fresh ideas and give someone an opportunity to help Corn on the Job reach it’s full potential.

Who is the ideal “Corny Intern”?

Because Corn on the Job is essentially driven by Social Media, we’re looking for an intern with major experience in this area. As for all of the corny qualifications, let me list them out for you!

Must have experience with Twitter and Facebook

Must understand how to use WordPress

Is interested in learning how to use awesome social media marketing tools and systems to grow a business

Must have a quirky and fun attitude and be ready to brainstorm creative ways to reach job seekers through blogging, twitter, facebook, and other channels

Must be available between 5-10 hours per week

What awesome things will the intern accomplish?

Brainstorm creative ideas for awesome and innovative blog posts

Communicate with the Corn on the Job community on Twitter and Facebook

Publish and Schedule blog posts utilizing a number of Social Media Tools (considering that Corn on the Job is linked to Bad Rhino, we have some fantastic tools for the intern to learn)

Reach out to other publications and bloggers to gain guest blog posts

Help coordinate and develop contests and promotions through social media

How do you apply?

I should first say that the internship will start mid August or ASAP if the ideal intern is found quickly. The internship will run until December, and can be extended if it works for both sides. It will be an unpaid, virtual internship.

To apply, just go ahead and do the following:

Send an email to CornOnTheJob@gmailDOTcom.

In the email, explain in 3-4 paragraphs why you want this internship and why I should select you. I’m not going to call it a cover letter, so don’t attach one, just write it out in the body of the email.

Include your resume so I can check out your experience.

Make sure to include in the email how many hours you’re available per week. Ideally, having someone for 5-10 hours per week will be best, but let me know what works best for you.

Let me know if you have any questions here in the comments section. Good luck!

Some top employers receive hundreds or thousands of unsolicited resumes every week. So, how do you stand out in a stack of 7,529 resumes to get your dream job?

Embrace networking and you won’t end up in the resume stack in the first place!

If you’re not quite sure how to begin the process of developing a strategy for networking your way into your dream job, here are 2 simple yet powerful steps you can take to get started:

Step 1: Organize your existing network.

Most job seekers completely underestimate and underutilize their existing network. If you know 100 people and each of those people knows 100 people you don’t know, that means you’re only an introduction away from 10,000 people right now!

You should make a comprehensive list of everyone you know and make sure to connect with them on LinkedIn and Facebook, too. When you are connected to someone through Facebook and LinkedIn, you can then see their complete employment history, and you can also see who else they are connected to. In general, you have 3 networking groups:

Personal Network (includes friends, family, and acquaintances from activities you participate in during your free time, i.e. rec sports leagues, religious groups, volunteer activities, etc.)

Academic Network (includes former/current classmates, former/current professors, other faculty/staff for your schools, and fellow alumni)

Professional Network (includes current/former bosses, colleagues, and customers and people you have met through organizations you participate in professionally)

As you organize your existing network, you should also make a list of any organizations you are affiliated with (i.e. volunteer organizations, alumni associations, professional associations, and so on). Make note of any upcoming events or other noteworthy job search resources provided by these organizations.

Step 2: Join the field/industry.

You also need to ask yourself these questions:

“Where can I go in-person to connect with people in the field/industry I want to work in?”

“Where can I go online to connect with people in the field/industry I want to work in?”

A few quick Google searches will reveal associations, conferences, and events where you can meet people in-person who already do work connected to your ideal career path. You need to be attending these events and adding value first by taking on volunteer/leadership positions.

In addition, every field/industry has LinkedIn Groups, blogs, online forums, e-newsletters, Facebook pages/groups, Twitter accounts, etc. where you can connect with people online who already work in the field/industry and where you can learn more about your ideal career path. You need to be participating in online conversations and adding value through these channels as well.

In summary, you probably have access to people right now who can help you get your dream job. However, even if you don’t, the Internet has made it easier than ever before to get connected with influential people in any field or industry

So, how does it work? Every now and then I’ll be asking folks on Twitter and/or Facebook a job search or career related question, and then sharing their answers with you here. Easy, right?

Today’s Question

My Answers

Don’t be nervous, you are also interviewing the company. Bring questions to grill them and decide if it’s a right fit for you.

I wish job seekers knew their interviewers. Research them on LinkedIn and prepare for a few hours, not just 10 minutes.

I wish job seekers knew that they should only arrive to the office 10 minutes early, not one hour.

Job seekers should know your resume and skills like the back of your hand. Looking down and saying, “umm” isn’t helping.

What is your answer to the question?

Remember me? My name is Bianca, but I’ve been dubbed “Chipotle Girl” by the internets. I’m one of many in the growing trend of Hire Me Campaigns. I was trying to land a “dream job” with Chipotle in September of 2011, but any place that would have hired me would have been my dream job.

Image from Bianca's Hire Me Campaign

What drove me to try a Hire Me initiative, was the success of my friend’s campaign for Turner Broadcast in Los Angeles. When the right job posting came to my attention, I went for it. Chipotle was looking for a social media coordinator, and I knew I could go above and beyond their expectations. My Hire Me Chipotle cost me $25 dollars for WordPress web hosting, but the life lessons I learned were priceless.

I didn’t get the intended reaction out of Chipotle, but I wasn’t expecting an interview. If anything, I thought I would have a cool story to tell down the line. In this job market, the only way to get noticed is to stand out. The outpouring of support was overwhelming, and I had people pushing my message to Chipotle daily. They were aware of me, but chose not to interview me.

The internet was quick to judge my campaign as a failure, but I disagree. I may not have received the position, but that doesn’t mean I failed. What defines a failure to me, is someone who doesn’t learn from their experiences. After five weeks, and not so much as a peep from Chipotle, I disbanded my campaign and set my sights on my true passions. I got the message that they weren’t interested, and invested my passion for social media back into my degree: advertising.

If you had asked me in college if I would be working at the advertising agency in Denver I admired most after I graduated, I wouldn’t have believed you. In fact, as I type this, I am still in shock that I landed here. Around the time of disband, my current company was seeking a social media intern. Because I had branded myself for employment with Chipotle, I was able to stand out in the hiring process. I was offered the position, and started my internship in December, and it was as if everything clicked for me.

They say if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. For me, even unpaid, I loved coming in to the office. Through hard work and determination, I was hired as a social media specialist in March. Looking back on my campaign, I never thought I would have ended up in my ultimate dream job.

I am so glad my current company saw in me what Chipotle didn’t bother to discover. I wouldn’t have gotten where I am today without taking a leap of faith into the unknown. Thank you for not hiring me, Chipotle! I cannot thank you enough for changing my life for the better!

I often get asked the question by our clients, ‘What is the most important thing I need on my resume?’ While there is no one size fits all answer, I think it brings up a good point that people often overlook when putting together their resume. Writing a resume is not an easy 1 step task, it is a process that is best started by looking at the job description and then tailoring your resume to it. After you begin to tailor your resume and include specific numbers, I often say during revisions that your next focus should go to keywords, power verbs and highlighting your soft skills.

1. Highlight Keywords from the Job Description

No matter what position you apply for, understanding how to optimize you’re your resume for keywords that are focused around the position you are applying for is a necessity. Whether your resume is being processed by an applicant tracking system, a recruiter or someone in HR, the initial scan of your resume will always begin with keywords. The key to understanding what keywords you need in your resume begins and ends with the position that you are applying for. Read through the job description and locate the major keywords they are honing in on and then be sure that throughout your resume your ‘keyword density’ aligns with the job description.

2. Check Your Verbs and Make them Powerful

After your resume has been optimized for keywords that align with the job description it’s now time to shorten your bullets and utilize resume power verbs. Resume power verbs do a few things for you when it comes to showcasing your talents for the role you are applying for. One, they highlight your communication skills by emphasizing your point in a more effective manner. Two, they show off your communication skills by highlighting your ability to get to the point in a quick manner. Another thing to remember about resume power verbs is that while they are essential, if you are forcing them into bullets they can hurt you as much as they can help you. Here’s a list of resume power verbs that we often recommend using as a resource if you are experiencing writer’s block.

3. Highlight Your Soft Skills in Writing

Finally there are soft skills, communication (improved above), team leadership and planning are all transferable skills and very useful when recruiters are looking at your resume. A lot of people believe that soft skills are hard to define within a resume, but it’s actually quite easy to showcase them by outside activities, roles and/or functions within a certain role. When people get lost in this I always ask, were there any projects you lead a team, took on the leadership role out of necessity, or had to organize a group of individuals to accomplish a task? And the majority of the time the response is ‘Yes.’ When trying to highlight key soft skills always think back to projects you worked on, count the number of people involved (include in your bullet point as well), think about how the project was facilitated and then highlight how you ensured a successful completion. This will highlight all three of the soft skills mentioned above effectively while also focusing on the key task that was within your role. This is a 2 part enhancement to your resume all in 1 quick and easy bullet.

So after you realize that resume writing is a process that needs to tailor to the role you want, these suggestions will allow your resume to align better with the role you are applying for, showcase your communication skills, and highlight your personal story through your soft skills. The extra effort and focus on them will pay dividends when recruiters and/or HR people are filling up your schedule with phone interviews .

What items or tactics do you see as essential to enhancing your resume?

In Corn on the Job’s (nearly) three year existence, I’ve been inspired by countless career experts. Through email, online, phone, and in-person conversations, each of the experts I’ve interacted with pushed me to be a better blogger for my audience here on Corn on the Job. For this reason, I wanted to create a list to highlight my personal favorite career experts.
